THE CROWD WAS A LITTLE TOO LOUD AT CERTAIN TIMES

AFTER THE FIRST FEW SONGS, A GUY STEPPED UP ON STAGE AND BEGAN FILMING
THE BAND. HE ALSO GOT CLOSE UP SHOTS OF EVERYONE PLAYING THERE

hello all
sorry i have to do this i was trying to let it just slide but it
doesn't look like it will stop. recently there have been a couple of
posts on the net about people not likeing GSW. well i for one count my
self as a fan of GSW and i think they new album is awsome. i also notice
that this is a group for DMB not GSW or even HORDE. so how about we drop
the little thread and let it lie. or take it wear it belongs. that
being finewine (GSW mailing list) or horde.net. if you need the address
for either of these groups let me know and i'll email them to you. thanks

Hello Fellow DMBfans,
I was wondering if anyone out there has a copy of a show Dave
played in Delaware on 7/28/93. This show was at The Cork and Bottle
Bar in Dewy Beach Delaware. If so, please E mail me back, I would
like to set up some kind of trade. Thanx...............TROY

Subject: Setlist 10/15/94

DMB opened for Phish at Oak Mountain Amphitheater in Birmingham,
Alabama. Their set lasted just under an hour. The set list: One Sweet
World (with very nice intro) Dancing Nancies (w/new-to-me intro
rap)Get In Line Jimi Thing (10 1/2 minutes) Cry Freedom Say Goodbye
Ants Encore:Rhyme N' Reason High point: After Phish finished their
second set, their was a long break to set up Carter's drums and pull
some more monitors back out on stage. Then Carter and Fishman did a
percussive jam before the remaining members of both bands returned to
the stage for a nice jam. Dave was dancing around during the jam and
tried to make some mouth noises, but his mike wasn't live. He was sans
guitar. Now for the good part, they closed the show with a nice long
version of "The Maker" For a review of the Phish show, check their news
group. Interesting wrap before Dancing Nancies. It went something like
"Sometimes I take a left turn instead of taking a right turn, (repeat),
Sometimes I don't know whether it's day or night, Sometimes I don't know
what I see, Sometimes I take
a left turn instead of taking a right and wonder does it matter" This
is in quotes, but since it's from memory I'll have to double check it
when I get the tape. During Get In Line, Stefan left the stage--maybe
bass problems?? Cry Freedom was well done, but the crowd was rather
inattentive to say the least. When Phish came on the stage, the sound
was considerably louder which is usually the case. Maybe afraid Dave
would upstage them? Oh please let's not start that war!! Dave also did
an acoustic set with everyone present except Carter at a local CD store
in Birmingham earlier in the afternoon. SRO and spillage out the door.
Set list included Dancing Nancies, Cry Freedom, and a beautifully slow
Trippin' Billies among others. I'll get the complete setlist and
possibly the tape in a couple days. Afterwards, Boyd and Dave signed
autographs for about 45 minutes. Among the interesting items signed: CDs
posters, T-shirts, DAT recorder case, $1, Tylenol travel container and a
acoustic guitar. I asked Boyd if they checked in on Minartes and he
said he doesn't have a computer right now, but he'd really like to look
around the net. My wife played a cruel joke on Dave and got in the end
of line and whispered in his ear that he had an eye booger. He wiped
for it and said you should have seen the one I had last night. She
promises never to do it again. Monkeys, Dolphins and Patrick (The guy
without the gratuitous SIG (cig.))

Subject: Observations

Hey all,
Just got back from a nice long relaxing weekend at home in Chicago. A
couple of observations about DMB in Chicago. Some CD store called listen
before you buy or something didn't even have any DMB, and hadn't even heard of
them. Idiots. Right next door at Best Buy, though, they not only had RTT and
UTTAD, but even had a little DMB slot among the M's. Quite amazing. Also had
the new GSW disc. Mixed thoughts IMHO about 1.99 cheap thrrills :) Also know
that there are lots of tix left for the 10/28 show at the Vic Theater. COme
one, come all. Just my 1/5 of a dime.....

There are no tapes of the show at the Bottle and Cork at Dewey
Beach from this summer (7/28/94). Tapers were given board patches, but
more than an hour into the show, someone with the bar unplugged all tapers

	After reading the plethora of "could I have been's . . " I
thought about a tape that I have where Dave introduces the song as
"this song's about the Belgian Army. It's kind of a difficult connection
to make, but I trust you can figure it out. Belgian Army, Belgian Army."

I don't know where or when the tape is from, but it's old (Blue Water,
Spotlight, Halloween, Wathctower, Pay for..., Old One Sweet World and
Granny without the "Love, Baby!" at the end). There are some other great
comments like:
(I guess there is a flowered lai on his mike stand)
"Someone put this here and I told them it was my cheap lay for
the evening."

"For those of you that can see, there's a fly up here with me.
He got in for free. His name is Bill. Bill the fly. And if you think
he's up here because I smell, you're wrong. It's because it a lot brighter
up here than it is down there."

"I trust everyone's had a pleasant evening up to this point. And
I hope everyone's evening continues on an upward slide. Is it possible
to slide upwards? I guess if you've been sliding downswards for a long
time. Did I mention my cheap lay?"

Anyway, there's more good ones throughout the show, I just can't remember
them right now. I often listen to the tape to get a laugh because the
sound quality leaves a little bit to be desired.

Subject: Halloween

Went to the Athens show on Friday and it was incredible. It was
a little disappointing at first because he played nothing new or
different. However, R&R was jamming. There is a short little
article in our school paper reviewing the concert. The writer seems
pretty informed when he mentions that Dave played Get in Line(which
by the way was really good.), but then he says "Six Feet Under, which
hasn't made its way onto an album, was by far the highlight of the
night." I guess he has not heard the album and has not realized
Six Feet Under is R&R. Oh well, if anybody has a copy of that
concert and wants to trade, I would love to. Also is anyone
taping the Nashville show on Thursday. I am going and would love
a copy. Please write me back
I know this is getting long, but one last thing. I have a
tape from a while back when Dave calls Halloween, "Sometimes I
Feel Like a Nut Sometimes I Don't" Pretty Cool.

Hey Guys. The best of the pictures I took last weekend are on line in
the archive.

-----------
anonymous FTP to netspace.org
the directory is /pub/DMB

If the next between the lines above seems to be in some kind of foreign
language (or worse yet-- whatever language Dave uses when he screams into
mics between songs!) please DO NOT ASK ME. Get the help of someone at
your school/company/internet provider.

Just in case it isn't obvious, the pictures from last week are named
8-Oct-94 and 9-Oct-94.

I will be doing a little renovation and organization over the next few
days and I will repost the changes when they are worked out.

this is not what dave titles the song.
this is a common dave phrase.. davetalk... babble...
usually i've only heard it sung during the intro to two step and this
quote, in it's entirety, is:
 "sometimes i feel like a nut, sometimes i don't... almond joy's got
nuts... mound's don't'

hugs and charleston chews...

i really wish rem had picked up on this motive and put so. central rain
on their first two cd's. or my first taste of phish was fee, so if that
were on consecutive cd's i'd be even happier.

people _are_ complaining about satellite being repeated, but not as much
because it wasn't played at 4,235,138 consecutive shows.

and i really wouldn't consider dancing nancies a repeat because 1) it
simply isn't the same song, 2)the recently ep is much harder to come
by than remember two things.

personally, i see r2t and recently being resurrected in about 2 years in
the form of a re-release which includes both on a single cd (yea, _another_
ants marching.........when it happens i'm going to show up at dave shows
wearing my modern english t-shirt :)

I know a secret...

DMB will return to the hills...

November 17, 18, 19 at the Fox in Boulder.

Earlier in the evening of the 19th, they will play at the KBCO Rock and
Roll Auction at the Paramount Theatre.

Heard in on the radio(actually, called the station after they played a DMB
song to ask if they knew anything - just a shot in the dark - nice results)
So it has to be true, right? Even if it isn't on the hotline( of course
the hotline is still anouncing the CD release shows?)

Just passing the info (& the spoons) to friends,

Subject: help?

after spending a rather secluded weekend in harrisonburg(with topics of
conversation running from how granite got on top of a mountain to a yellow
blanket named alice), i got back to my e-mail and found 27 new messages
(i'm digestified, so for those of you who aren't, that translates into more
like 60 new messages). now, 27 new messages aren't that hard to process,
but when it takes about 15 seconds a file to send out assorted lyrics and
answered questions, your talkin' up to a minute and a half per request.
roughly two thirds of my mail is requests, meaning i was in this lab for
about 35 minutes before i could even read actual mail (oh, the woes and
laments of a vms operating system: i have to do everything manually--and
jeff, you can tell wendy that i'm whining again...:).

anyway, what i'd like to do, is have someone help me disseminate the faq
until we get a working, automated archive. you don't need to worry about
re-writing it or anything, unless you really think i did a terrible job
at it. just take over the dissemination (what a great word) aspect. i
don't really care how you get it out, just get it out. i honestly don't
have time for it. i will continue to process lyrics file requests, and
i will still administrate (?) the faq, meaning if someone has something to
add or change, that person can talk to me, and whoever takes over can just
forward related mail to me.

i'd kind of prefer someone who'd not already doing a file of some sort,
because the faq is one of the more sought after files, and i'd like a
person to be able to concentrate on just it (and if you have unix, you're
the shit. i'll get alex to give you a free tube of toothpaste, and ben
to give you a free jar of mayo, along with the faq).

anyone interested?

Subject: Dewey...7/28/94

For Troy who asked for the 7/28/94 Bottle and Cork show or anyone else
interested, I was at this particular show- the last time I'll ever see
Dave for five bucks (and free hot wings to boot!)- and I tried to boot it
but Jeff was not letting anyone tape the show- something about the place
being so small and having sub-par equipment and he didn't want any bad
boots getting around at this point...so, I don't think there are any copies
of this show, though I'd love to have one because it was killer.

I was at 12-1-93 (the "dogs fornicatin'") and thought that was
hysterical...I would love to trade for a copy of that show...later

Subject: Granny

Guys,
Just updating the FAQ, cause I love this song and it's a bit
different in this version. May shed a little light:

Granny (as sung on 9/28/93 at the Flood Zone)

Hello, how are you doing today
I hope I find you feeling healthy
So glad our paths crossed this time today
On our way into the night
I say it's love that keeps me here
Turn me in, turn me down and I say
baby I love you up and down and inside out
I say love when I approach and tears they fall like rain
You tell me baby your hearts into a thousand pieces dies

Stop only the old and wise, with clouded eyes,
You can't see what I can't
I blindly throw my faith to the face
Of the next good thing that comes my way

So here we are all of us stand around
We're leaning heavy on each other
Always wonder hey what is it lies behind
Worried eyes of one another
I believe it's love so give it up turn it out share it wear it
Baby I love you I love you up and down and inside out
Love I when I apppoach my tears they fall like rain
You tell me baby your heart into a thousand peices dashed

Stop only the old and wise, with clouded eyes
You can't see what i can't hide
Blindly throw my faith into the face
Of the next pretty girl that comes my way

I say it's love so there we go turn me up turne me down
Silly baby I love you so it makes me crazy
I say love I come to you tears they fall tears they fall
Silly baby your heart's into a thousand pieces dashed

Love

Baby

Love

Baby

Love yeahhhhhno

Baby comin back around, comin back
Love handinI'll lylesellin *

Baby reachin up way up reachin high for
Love man I caught it right here right here by you

Baby only in the rain goes rain goes
Silly love nobody said life would be so easy would it

Silly little silly little love . . .

* no clue what he is singing at this point

If you want a copy, it's a fantastic show with full band and Tim on
electric guitar. I am interested in the Sept. 30, 94 Roseland show and
the Oct. 1, 94 show at the TLA. If ANYONE has these, I will gladly trade.

Boot tape listing is forthcoming (as soon as Ian sends me the specs on
those four he dubbed for me!)

here is what I meant...
The three concerts I mentioned at the Horse Center have already happened
being 1)Phish/dave 2)Connells 3) Widespread Panic.
The fourth, which is Nov 9 is Dave/Rusted Root only and has yet to happen..
Tickets go on sale here this friday the 21rst and I am assuming at other
places also. Right now I don't know the number offhand, but tix are sold
here at Night Owl Music on a cash only basis as far as I know. I really
don't know what his policy is on ticket holding/reserving/charging etc.
You could also try calling the Va Horse Center.
If I get off my butt, I'll post the numbers later, but I have a midterm I

Boofy, you're always sooo up on things. Yes, we students and fans in
Lexington are glad to here of the long-awaited return of Dave and his
band of merry men. The horse center will never be like the old Zollman's
blasts (i.e. no, the beer wont be free and flowing about as fast as
Buffalo Creek did when everyone was peein' in it), but I think the DMB
and Rusted Root will make that big ole collesium bearable. Why don't we
try to fill it up boys and girls? That's all I got to say. Yippppeeee!!!

Hey? If we can all spoon on the net, I bet we can give zurbits (sp??) to

Subject: cheese

Recently I've read comments criticizing Dave for his repetitive use of
certain phrases during DMB live shows, namely those phrases regarding
cheese. It would be wholly dishonest for me to defend Dave by saying
that such accusations are preposterous, for, indeed, I myself caught the
8/11/94 show in Nashville where Dave proclaimed "There are hundreds of
thousands of things you can eat that are not cheese." It is true that
the use and reuse of such phrases lessen the spontaneity factor and thus
their emotional impact, however I am quite sure that this is of little
concern to Dave. You see, I happen to know what only the hardcore
members of the DMB community are aware of, for I am the owner of *Dave
Matthews: Scourge of Sodom and Velveeta (the Unauthorized Biography).
It tells of how Dave, from his humble upbringing as a carpenter's son,
rose to relative fame, far before his rock and roll days, as a champion
of culinary rights and a messenger to all the peoples of the world of
the evils inherent with eating cheese. It has been said that you can
take the dog out of the fight but you can't take the fight out of the
dog. Although Dave's cheese-bashing dogma is not so popular now as once
it was, should we condemn this brilliant man for simply promoting his
honest opinion rather than pandering to the whims of the masses. In
fact, we should thank him for at least attempting to lead us away from
our impending cheese-ridden doom. So allow me to be the first. Thank
you Dave. Thank you for being a caring man in a cruel, cruel world.

Hi(gh) Neighbors,

In honor of DMB comming back to the Fox (which is 21+ except on rare
occasionss - but maybe they will do 1 all ages night, who knows), anyway to
honor the occasion, and as a symbolic gesture of my happines I am doing my
first ever:

Newbie Offer - for people with no tapes (including those other
bands we listen to) people who can't trade anything but happines and
enthusiasm.

Vail, CO, 8.28.94 - It is a decent tape of a good show. There are
some cuts (i.e. Two Step when some drunkard bashed into the taper), but
other than that its worth it. Good versions of Nancies and Recently (even
though this ins't one of my fav.s)

Anyway, this offer is open until I close it - no # limits (yet) So
those of our listeners who are digestified won't be left out.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Jason -
who is doing this because he found a formula in the back of a dusty

I am pretty sure that this show was at TRAX some time in 92 or 93. I

Kimberly Buresh and Phoebe from dartmouth have a tape from 1/20/93.
I have the exact same tape and it was actually the first DAVE tape I had.
I can say with confidence that the tape is from the Floodzone, and probably
not Trax.
You are both right, it's a great set. Even though it is my first DAVE tape,
it's still one of my favorites. The version of Halloween is one of my

o Song That Jane Likes
o Satellite
o Recently
o Jimi Thing

o Dancing Nancies
o Warehouse
o Ants Marching

I think it's partially a mix (two Ants'), but I would like to know WHEN it

Peter Griesar plays keyboard and harp throughout.

The idiots in rec.music.phish were around in the phish.net before
rec.music.phish. Until the existance of r.m.p, it was impossible to
keep up with the important information, because it was hard to find
the 1 line worth reading in the 600 line digest.

An alternative to a newsgroup could be a split in the list, much like
dead-heads, dead-flames, etc. Leave minarets for mass discussion
while having a moderated satellite list for tour date info, cd
release, etc, and a moderated billies list for tape trading :-).

I'd even volunteer my services as moderator for both lists, and my
machine as the home for the lists themselves.

Okay, I have to draw the line somewhere, so I have to close the Newbie tape
offer of the Vail show. I have contacted most of you who already
responded, I think there are like five more that I haven't gotten to yet.
I'm sorry I couldn't keep it open longer, but I don't want to over commit
myself and then make you wait for months for your tape.

Don't worry if you missed this one, I'm SURE others on minarets are just
about to follow suit and lend a helping hand to the tapeless amongst us.

Until we meet again,

Well, I don't..

1 - If the mail volume is too much for anyone, there is a possibility of
digestifying the list, into approximately one digest per day. I prefer to
get each individual message, and don't mind the volume, but that's me.

2 - It takes a lot of time and effort to create a rec.music newsgroup. It
would definitely be plausable, but there would probably be an alt group
created first for several months, to show the volume, and alt groups are
less prolific as many sites do not receive them.

3 - Regarding the volume, I think linking the list to a newsgroup would
be.. umm.. bad. The list has undergone tremendous growth recently, and is
still trying to deal with it I think. Maybe once things have settled down a
bit.. But if any of you are on the BT list, the messages on that have been
total crap the past several weeks I think. I am actually getting less
interested in the band because of the complete hogwash that's been
posted/mailed to it (most of it through the newsgroup I believe). I really
don't want to sound like some exclusionary elitist, but let's face it, with a
mailing list you're going to get the people who REALLY are interested in and
want to participate in discussion about the band. There won't be the posts
of "I agree" and you won't be attracting every random tom dick and jane who
wonders what alt.music.dmb is. I know it sounds exclusionary, but I think
it's needed. I'm a bloody business major. We study stuff like this..
product focus and target market segments and all that crap. :)

Subject: Colorado Info

A couple of useful byte for colorado folk, (and those making the sojourn to
see the shows)

1) The shows are now confirmed, tix on sale Fri. 10/21 at 10a.m. for around
13 bucks.

2)The dates are 11/17, 11/18, 11/19 (Thur. Fri. Sat)

3) THE THURSDAY SHOW IS ALL AGES!! -it is good to see bands paying
attention to the audience. (I used to hate being 19 and 20)

4) Saturday, they will also play the KBCO Rock auction at the Paramount
Theatre. This is all ages too, I'm pretty sure. I know they will play
early and probably won't have a very long set either, but a little dave is
better than a punch in the eye.

5) the tape offer is OVER, FINISHED, CAPUT, FINITO, EL FIN - whatever
language you speak - the offer is no more, please stop sending me requests,
I have recieved about 5 more since I first cancelled the offer - and now I
don't have the heart to turn them down. This brings the grand total up to
about 27 people. This isn't a tree - it is more like a shrub, I am the
only root. That way the quality that people get is very low generation.
The quality of the original is good, but not spectacular enough for me to
seed a tree with.

6) Has anyone else evey noticed how you can fit the word granny in most DMB
song titles - i.e.

	Tripping Grannies
	Granny Lay Down
	Dancing Grannies
	Granny Thing
	One Sweet Granny
	Grannies Marching
	What Would Your Granny Say
	Song that Granny Likes
Lie in our Grannies - okay that is stretching it a little -
actually it is a little gross, but it gave me a chuckle...

Take care, share the chuckles, spare the nuckles,
Jason

Hey ...
	Here's the scoop:
		Show Date: November 11
Place: Wake Forest University's Wait Chapel
Time: Doors open at 7:00 PM
Opening Act: Rusted Root from Pittsburgh - They're awesome.
		Capacity: around 4,000 (maybe less)
Ticket Info: On Sale Monday, October 24 @ 9AM
			Option 1: @ 1-800-594-8499
Option 2: Record Exchange in Winston-Salem
				   @ 910-768-0600
Option 3: Record Exchange in Greensboro
				   @ 910-288-2300
			Option 4: @ Ziggy's beginning at 9AM
Option 5: @ Wake's Campus at location TBA

Good Luck in ticket searching - The concert will sell-out, but tickets
should be available for a couple hours in the morning. If you're coming
to Wake for the concert - stay over because it will be a good week-end,
with the UNC football game being the next day. Keep me posted as to
other show dates in the south (esp. North Carolina).
***Check out Rusted Root's CDs - They are going to be a good opening act.***

Subject: A little help

I have a request. For some reason, I can't seem to get in to the DMB
calender line. Could some kind soul please call in and then post all
dates post- Oct. 31? In addition, could someone please give me the full
info for the Irving Plaza show (Date, time, phone #, tix price, etc.) my
friend just wrote to tell me about?
In return for this act of kindness, I'll have a newbie offer for the first
five to get to me after this info is posted, in addition to the poster of
said info. I'll probably make it the News Years Show at the Richmond
Marriott. So all you newbies who've been asking for help getting started
on your DMB tape collection, here's your chance- I haven't seen this show on
too many tape lists.

Subject: Shannon Worrell

I want to share an incredible album with anyone out there who hasn't
heard it or of it yet. I'm refering to "Three Wishes" by Shannon Worrell. As
I understand it, Shannon performed at the UTTAD release party last month and
has some roots within DMB, as I will elaborate. How's this for a list of guest
artists and so on that appear on her album?:  Dave Matthews-backing vocals;
Leroi Moore-sax; Tim Reynolds-mandolin, electric guitar, slide guitar; Kristin
Asbury-backing vocals;and John Alagia-backing voclas, piano, electric guitar,
(and he's the producer). With that crew I hope I've got a few people
interested.
The album is extremely good folk/acoustic/ stuff that travels really
well from start to finish. Shannon has a powerful voice with a great range and
her fair share of emotion. Dave's backing vocals are on two tracks and they're
absolutely beautiful. Check it out. I'm not sure how widely distributed the
album is and I doubt you can find to far away from VA, so here's an address:

	send $14.50 (includes ship/hand) to:

hope you enjoy.......

Dear Everyone,
Hi! I'm just getting started on minarets and this is my first post. I've
had r2t for about a year and didn't think I would see it bettered. But lo
and behold, I pick up UTTAD and am in love again. Now I see all the live
songs I'm missing. Could anyone out there pleeease let me know if they
feel like sending me some tapes. I'm especially interested in something
with 'Cry Freedom' which I've heard so much about. I only have a few
Phish and Flecktones tapes, but will send tapes, money, or pictures of
myself naked. You name it. Thanks a lot in advance.

Is anyone out there going to any of the following shows: St. Louis, Mo.;

the Columbia show is FREE.

If so, would you please tape the shows an send me a copy. I tried

now he is playing there for FREE. Life's tough, 'eh?

Subject: Minarets Outro???

I have a tape that is labelled "Zolman's W&L '93" and the full date is
not given. Anyhow in the first set, Dave goes from Minarets into this
really odd song that is just two chords over and over and he sings about
life and death and then Boyd comes in with a killer solo, then then jam
switches into a nice mellow groove and it ends. After that they do
Recently and Ants Marching. The encore is Granny, Song that Jane Likes,
and Pay for What you Get.

I've got two questions. What is the name of this song he goes into? And
what is the date of this tape I have?

Thanks a ton,
Russ.

Sounds like 1-30-93, assuming that the set opens with some solo Dave.
Also, somewhere in that first set, someone yells out "Fuck You" to
which Dave responds, "fuck me? later on, my boy, later on." One of my
favorite Daveisms. If that's what your tape has , then it is indeed
1-30-93. The song is called Bluewater, or Bluewater Baboon Farm in full
and in the days of yore.
Also- I've got my info on the post Halloween DMB shows. Still nothing on
that Dave show in NYC. I've got room for three more on the newbie offer
for the 12-31-93 Marriott show. And, if you could, please start getting
those Warehouse tape surveys back to me, I want to have them all by a
week from tomorrow. Thanks

Subject: *** 10/27/94 Charlottesville ** GATHERING ***

Phish-Net Gathering for 10/27/94
Preceding show at University Hall, Charlottesville, VA

Purpose:
To meet all those crazy pholks that you've met in
cyberspace but never in person. To attach faces to names and
email ids. To trade tapes and tapelists. To pontificate about the
net and Phish. To predict the show, or discuss the Boone show
that took place the night before. To fill yourself with ground
cow and beer so you're full and ready to boggie at this, the
Elusive Seventh Charlottesville Show, the dream, the reality, the
magic! Also, to find pholks that have your tickets and/or crash
space; it'll be a *heck* of a lot easier than doing it in the
lot, esp. since there are four or more lots.

Location:
Ruby Tuesday's. I know; it ain't some hip place with 45
homebrews on tap, like some gatherings I've seen. But, they've
got decent food, some decent beers on tap, those under 18 can get
in, and it's basically walking distance (5 min) from the venue.

Time:
3-6pm, before the show. Show starts at 7 pm (which means
it *starts* approx 7:25); doors open at 6 pm (which means you
want to get there by 6:15 to get up front; its general admission
with no chairs on the floor.)

What to bring:
Your tapelist, recent setlists (esp the night before),
travel plans for the weekend, good cheer, empty stomachs, wide
smiles, happy thoughts. No illegal substances please. (You'd be
surprised *how* necessary it is to say that; this is a public
eatery, pholks.)

Directions, generally:
See the ascii map I posted (which I can send you again if
you missed it.)

Directions from the south (on 29):
Stay on 29 North past a few Charlottesville exits; don't
take 29 Business. Watch for the Barrack's Road exit. At the
bottom of the ramp is a stop sign; turn right into the right lane
of two lanes. You *could* go to the second light, turn right onto
29 Business (called Emmet Street here), and take the second right
directly into the Ruby Tuesday's parking lot, but this will take
you directly into show traffic if it's mid- to late-afternoon.
Instead, after turning onto Barrack's Road, turn right at the
*first* light (onto a road marked as "SHORTCUT" on my ascii map),
then take the first left down into Barrack's Road shopping
center. Get to the other side of the lot, where you will see
Ruby Tuesday's facing Emmet Street; Something Vision eyewear is
the other side of the building that Ruby's is in, and there is a
Baskin Robbins on the north end of the building, which you will
pass on the way to the Ruby's lot.

Directions from the north (on 29):
Stay on 29 South into Charlottesville. After you pass a
Kroger on the left and a few hotels on the right, there will be
an option to exit (first right, ramp before bridge, continues 29
South; second right, ramp after bridge, continues to 250 West);
*do not* exit. As you continue, the road that was 29 South
becomes 29 Business. After going under the bridge, you will pass
Bodo's Bagels (highly recommended, but no beer, often busy, and
far from the venue), Arby's, and Exxon on the left. The Exxon is
at the corner of 29 Business (here called Emmet Street) and
Barrack's Road, where there is a light. *After* this light, take
the second right, into the Shopping Center, then an immediate
left past Ruby Tuesday's and into the Ruby's parking lot.

Directions from elsewhere (250, 64, 22, etc):
Ummmm.. get a map, read the previous two sets of
directions, and get to where 29 and Barrack's meet, the continue
as appropriate.

And, of course, forward this message to anyone that might be
coming to the show, so we can be sure to have a good showing, and
prepare for a great show!

Questions:
I will be unreachable the day of the show, since I'm in
class until the gathering. However, I'll check my email accounts
a few times on the way.

Enjoy,
Ellis of Lemuria

Personally I think that the best solution is to start newsgroup and keep
Minarets, but keep them different. In other words DON't make like r.m.phish
and Phish-Digest where if post to one you post to the other. Make it like
a.m.pink-floyd and the mailing list Echoes, which are totally separate.

Subject: Flood Zone 12-16-92

Hey all,
Does anyone else have this problem: when the digest is too long, the
last messages get cut off? I wrote this yesterday but it got cut off, so here
it is again.
A friend of mine has a video of DMB at the Flood Zone on 12-16-92.
Somehow the audio got screwed up. If anyone has that show on tape, please let
me know.

                    Thanks,
                       Heather

Subject: SPLITTING Minarets?

I'm sorry but this idea is absolutely ridiculous. Minarets is fairly small,
and 40 messages a day is nothing to split up. If you can't keep up with a
moderately paced net, then unsubscribe, but splitting into 2 or 3 (??) groups
is just insane.

Minarets is FUN to read. I ENJOY it. phish.net is something that I
sometimes dread reading. There are so many idiots, and a newsgroup would add
many of these idiots. Call me whatever you want, I want Minarets to stay as
it is. What's the use of changing something that's working better than ever?

If any of you hard-core veterans of bootlegs would like to help out a

I will send blanks, cash, whatever. I can trade some Dead.

Dave is big at Duke but I can't find people with any Dave bootlegs.

If you can help me out, I would be very thankful.

Subject: Foreign tour?

Hey all, just a random question here. I'm listenening to an
unidentified bootleg and Dave says " We're back from a foreign tour."
This is the first set and is said just before starting into Angel From
Montgomery. The show is from when Peter was still in the band but that
is all I know about the date. What is the deal with this? Have they been
on a foreign tour before? I thought the Montreal 10/5/94 show was the first
international appearance for the band. Does anyone know what the deal
with this is?
I'm also wondering if anyone knows the date or place of
this show. The setlist is Two Step/Lover Lay Down/ The Maker/ Recently/
Blue Water/ The Song That Jane Likes/ Jimi Thing/ Dancing Nancies/
Minarets/ Angel From Montgomery/ Warehouse. In the beginning of Two Step
Dave Says, "Beach song, we just went to the beach, this is a
beach song. It's beach love. Hello." After Warehouse Dave says "Thank you.
We're gonna take a short break and then we'll be back on. Please don't go
home. If you want to dance, it's comming up, it's comming up." During the
show sometime he says something about starting out mellow and the they'll
do whatever happens. Anyways, if anyone recognizes any of this I would
really appreciate any info. Thanks.

Well, here I go. After reading some rather mediocre reviews of by far
one of my favorite songs in existence, I'm gonna put out a little defense of
Typical Situation (as recorded on UTTAD). I whole heartedly agree that the
extended jam which the band usually hammers out on stage during this tune blows
me away, but I think there's a reason for its absence on the disc. Let us keep
in mind that this is a studio album and what works on stage doesn't
necessarily work on tape. The recorded version of Typical is an extremely
sublime song that showcases Dave's voice above all. The first aspect of DMB
that caught my interest was Dave's voice and it seems that this doesn't receive
as much attention as I would expect. This is a great song to hear him at his
best. When the first verse comes to an end and Dave slides into the chorus
(everybody's happy..) the transition is absolutely perfect. The bass slide and
chimes create such an intense mood. As the rest of the band comes in later the
subtle energy built into the song threatens to explode, but its kept in check by
the transition between fast and slow, loud and soft that Dave has written. To
finish this off I'll go on record as saying my mouth dropped open when I first
heard that flute solo and I
wouldn't change that for the world. Leroi is amazing with his horns and
apparently just as deadly with the flute and the choice of instruments on this
tune was excellent.

Subject: Dave review you might enjoy reading

Hey all-I'm up in Boston and I thought you'd be interested in reading
this article, which I'm typing up for you from The Globe...
"Grass roots takes on new light with the Dave Matthews Band, a Virginia
quintet that has just debuted at #34 on the Billboard chart with this
album. It's a fulfilling bow, produced with punch by Steve
Lillywhite(early U2), on the heels of large club sellouts and two
homemade CDs. Led by a South African expatriate whose tight voice
sometimes recalls Robert Plant, the band spins dreamy, shifting melodies
like a folkier Samples. Acoustic guitar, fiddle, sax, bass and drums lend
an airy, flexible tension. Positivity pervades "Warehouse" (about leaving
mental confinement) and "The Best of What's Around." Matthews explores
the darker side in the gruff Rhyme and Reason," detailing confusion that
leads to an addiction, and "Dancing Nancies," where a suicidal
23-year-old asks, "Could I have been anyone other than me?" But the
latter subject adopts an "I'll work it out" attitude while fiddle and sax
swirl with uplift. Those instruments also surface to spice the crisp
"Ants Marching" with a country tinge, while Blues Travelers harp ace John
Popper fuels he funk But the music mainly
supports Matthews' wise, introspective writing.
                          written by Paul Robicheau
Sorry about the shitty typing, but you get the idea, just thought you'd
find it amusing.

Hey all,
Much to my surprise I have seen little talk of the
Athens show on the net. I was there and got just back recently.
I thought it was incredible, full of energy, and the crowd
was definitely very into it, among other things. Which brings
me to my point. If anyone out there taped the show (yes
I mentioned this before) please let me know, and let me know
how I can get a hold of the tape. I will do anything to get
it! Failing, that, if someone could just send me a setlist
it would be nice too (I have a bad memory). And as if I haven't
asked for enough here, if anyone has a tape of any of the early
dates of this tour (particularly Charlottesville, Richmond, Philly,
and/or Raleigh) I would love to get my hands on those too.
Once again I will do anything, I have some bootlegs etc.

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Trax show without Carter?

Does anyone remember way back when, on one of those mystical
Tuesday nights at Trax, a time when Carter had hurt his hand or
something and did not play with the band? I'm *not* confusing Carter
with Stefan, GOD FORBID, I remember in early summer '93 when Stefan
"put his hand through a window" (in Dave's own words) and this is
definitely a very different time. I'm not even really sure what year
it was. I could swear it was a whole month that Carter was gone, but
I only saw one show. They played mostly your standard fare (Ants,
Warehouse, Billies, etc), but none of the songs sounded a thing like
they usually did. They had somebody (guy that played bongos with them
from time to time, don't remember his name) on percussion, maybe even
two guys, but without Carter's drums all my friends were way pissed
because "you can't dance to it!" but I was FLOORED. Mesmerized.
Without the drums to structure the tunes the guys just went walking
all over the place, simply JAMMING like nobody's business. It was
fucking amazing. Does anyone besides me remember a show like this,
and might anyone perchance have a tape of one? I've got some decent
ones myself (including the full 110 minutes of the amphitheatre UTTAD
premiere show, or how about the WTJU Prism show that saw the first
live performance of "the Christmas Song"- which Dave called "Blod of
Our Children" at the time) and can trade. Many thanks,

I was recently reading "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintinance"
by Robert Pirzig and I came across a few excerpts from the beginning
of the book that bring to mind the lyrics to a tune that should seem familiar
to everybody. I'll try to keep the quotes brief.

"It was all those people in the cars coming the other way.The first
one looked so sad.And then the next one looked exactly the same way,and
then the next one and the next one, they were all the same."(p.17)

"What you see is the NO TRESPASSING,KEEP OUT signs and not anything
serving people but little people like ants, serving these strange
incomprehensible shapes.And you think,even if I were part of this,even if I
were not a stranger,Iwould be just another ant serving the shapes."

Subject: Carter Rocks the House in Nashville!!!!

THAT WAS ABSOLUTLY INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! The show at the 328 Club in
Nashville I mean. Carter rocked the house!!!! The walls were shaking,
the floor was shaking.... I'm still shaking!!!!

Here's a rough idea of the set list, not in any order and certainly no
guarantees if this is really correct (we're all still in a delerium).

Seek Up to start off
Dancing Nancies.... My personal favorite
Warehouse.... I wanted to marry Carter!!!!!!
Get in Line
Best of What's Around
What would You Say
Song that Jane Likes
Cry Feedom..... heard someone say, "What album is this on?"
Jimi Thing.... Incredible jam on this one
Rhyme and Reason
Granny
Ant's Marching.... The old way with the dueling banjos solos (Haven't
enjoyed it this much in a while!!!)
Recently..... Everyone threw down and let loose, with "on broadway" intro
Tripping Billies
All Along the Watchtower.... Left me COMPLETELY numb!!!!

We think we've got a pretty good DAT so send some tapes if ya want a copy
and a list of shows you would like to trade. We'll post a correct list
tomorrow before we leave for break.

I absolutely worship Carter!!! I got to know him when he played at the
Sandbar in Chattanooga last year. Tonight during a break inbetween songs I
yelled at him and he waved, handed Dave one of his drum sticks and told him
to give it to me. Pointed at me and everything! I wish I had a video!!!

Well, gotta go to class tomorrow so better hit the sac ( if I can sleep!!!!).

Sorry, I can accept no new Newbie requests. I got all I can handle. I have
responded to twenty as of Thurs 1:00 pm Pacific time.
Hopefully others will offer tapes, as well.

1) saw everything twice in the last 10 days! Got one hq tape from Ziggy's.
Jack Straw is a really neat club/restaurant and all the folks from here came
down!!!! I got a tape but for some reason the levels were off so it sounds
really pissy. They won't play Lorie until after midnight on Jan 1 1995.
They usually split it and play something in between. Now they have a year.
Last note on everything, Nate, the percussionist/lyricist told me after JS's,
that Capricorn Records folks will be/now were at the show the next night in
TN. That rocks!! Maybe, just maybe, we'll see em on HORDE this summer!!!!
Anyway, there was an excellent Sax Jam->Be Gone, and several , and I mean
several great jams on bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, sax, etc. Soulfish was
a little weaker than I'm used to, but they spoil Davidson in general. Craig
said we're their "ace in the hole here in NC." If anyone gets a shot to see
em, they're doing great. Craig and Co. have even written some new stuff,
there's an acoustic song called "All is Quiet" and one they haven't even
titled yet, but they opened the show with it!!!! NEW MUSIC! [ hmm not
something we've seen of our fav Dave...]

2)really looking forward to Dave in NC! As I've said before, Winston, the
armpit of NC, with great violent crime stats, and no really good local
musicians of our genre, will crave Dave and it'll be my first RR show too!
Maybe just maybe, I get on board..... Talked to a friend from Carnegie Mellon
and he said that he's seen em a couple of times and they rocked.... we'll
see, but I generally trust his taste. ...liked the dancing grannies post...i
ramble and waste time... oh well, eat drink and be merry, cause soon monday
will be here....

BTW, someone email me and tell me what spooning is...

Yes, there was a time when Carter was gone. I don't
have any tapes of it, but I do have the "Welcome Back Carter
II" tape. (the 2nd show at the Flood Zone after he came back.)
This is my first time writing, because I didn't think
there were any other fans here from the good 'ol days. But
since there are, does anyone have any tapes from Trax or the
Flood Zone with the "Sweet Home Alabama" intro to Ants
Marching, or the "Dancing in the Streets" intro to Recently(I
think)?
I have good tapes to trade. Warehouse where Dave sings
"Mama's Little Baby Loves Shortnin' Bread", and an old radio
show with a lot of rare solo stuff. I also have the original
version of Granny (completely different, only the music's the
same).

Thanks.

Subject: Question about 10/9/94

I just got a crispy SBD (analog master) of the 10/9/94 show from the
Avalon, and I have one question for anyone who was there. What was LeRoi
playing during Say Goodbye. It was definitely not the Saxophone, or
whatever he regularly plays. If anyone could help me, it would be
appreciated. Also, if anyone has some other hot shows from this tour
(PHISH too) or earlier, I would be interested in trading. I have many hot
shows. Please e-mail me directly, because I don't always read the net.
Thanks. Later.

Subject: I NEED SOMEBODY...ANYBODY...HELP

I have been subscribed to minarets for what I think is a decently long time
(obviously not as long as most though) but I have never posted.

This is because I, and I am honestly admitting this to all of you (and some
might hate me for it), do not know DMB at all. In fact, I subscribed
however long ago because I heard about them from a friend and have been
busting my balls to try to find their album(s) (granted the EP stuff, etc)
in local stores without any luck. #34 on Billboard??? Really? Shit,
cause the top 40 places around me don't have anything....I guess DMB isnt
selling out completely then! :-)

Anyway, my real consternation is that I have tried my best to sign up for
these generous newbie offers but each time it seems like i get there after
they have closed. Maybe its cause I don't always get to read Minarets
within the first 10 minutes of getting it (though I do know how nice that
is).

Obviously I have no DMB but I do have some BT, U2 (any other fans there?),
some released and promo Toad the Wet Sprocket live cuts (ditto), Led
Zepplin, Guns and Roses...

Can anyone help?

                --J

p.s. this message was written about 2.5 hours ago...it was interrupted to
go and see Pulp Fiction.....very very very interesting. I loved it.

Subject: Questions

Hey everybody, I have a couple of questions for you. First last
summer ('93) before R2T, I went to see Dave at the Floodzone. Instead of
Dave however, it was the Charlottseville All-Stars. Boyd, Leroi, and
Carter were part f the group. They played True Reflections, then just
kind of muddled around for an hour and a half. I was pretty disappointed.
Anyway, my question is... Who are the Charlottesville All-Stars, and what
is their relation to Dave.
Next question, I have a tape that has a few songs from 1/1/94. At
the end of True Reflecetions a group joins the band on stage and starts
rapping. Its a pretty cool, five or six minute rap/jam. Does anybody
know who this was with Dave?
And finally... if anyone has the lyrics to Two Step, I would
greatly appreiciate it.

Thanks for any and all info you can give me.

Just saw the show last night in St. Louis (10/21/94). It was my first
DMB show, and it was amazing! I thought it started out kind of slowly
until they played Dancing Nancies when the band really started to get
into it. My friend has a copy of the setlist, so I'll try to get it and
post it to the net. Highlights for me were an amazing Recently to close
out the set and Cry Freedom Cry during the encore. I hate to shamelessly
grovel, but does anyone have tapes of this show? I would really love to
get a copy of it, have plenty of assorted stuff (DMB, Phish, GSW, BT,
others) to trade. Couldn't tell if there were any tapers out there.
SOmeone, please let me know!
Also, I know this is really short notice, but a friend and I are now
considering driving out to Columbia to catch tonights show. Is there
anyone out there who could help me out with info on where and exactly
when the show is quickly? Thanks very much in advance!

as a matter of fact, i can't send this message right now, because i'm

1. I'd appreciate it greatly if you all could start getting those
warehouse tape selections to me pretty soon. I'd like to have them all be
next weekend. Remember- subject line is WAREHOUSE TAPES. I'll reprint the
original message if anyone needs it.

2. Our school paper had a review of UTTAD yesterday. Not worth
reprinting- suffice it to say that they claimed that R2t was mostly about
a former girlfriend of Dave's, especially apparent in Song That Jane
Likes. I'd flame them if they had an e-mail address, but they don't.

3. I will GIVE 4 hi- q DMB tapes to anyone willing to sport my friend and
I a ride from New Haven to New York City for the Nov. 7 Irving Plaza
show. Catch- we can't leave till 6pm, but there should still be plenty of
time, it's only 1 1/2 hours from here.

Sorry if this is non-sensical. I've taken a taste of what's below and
come away to something better.

Subject: Cry Freedom (Cry?) / Out of Rhyme / The New Song

This is a nice quick post...

1.) why is everyone suddenly calling it Cry Freedom CRY? Before Dave broke
it back out this tour, it was pretty much accepted as Cry Freedom, correct?
Sorry for being so anal. It's aol working me over again...

2.) Thinking about that old Rhyme&Reason thread concerning how out of tune
boyd & leroi were, I'd have to say it seems like that is actually
INTENTIONAL. On a tape I just got, Tripping Billies comes right before
Rhyme, and in billies I don't notice anything out of tune, and I'd like to
think I have a pretty well developed ear.

3.) The new one - "Get In Line" - definately sounds like a happy version of
"Help Myself"... basically the same type of riff, but without dark sounding
chords like A+ (A augmented) in it.

But I like it. New Dave is good Dave.

Subject: I need this tape dated!

Howdy! I have this dave bootleg that has no date. If anyone knows please
drop me a line. Thanks.
	-Lie in Our Graves
	-The song that jane likes
(after the song that jane likes Dave says: hmmmmmm peter, peter. So
you all doing well tonight? I'd like to thank Tiny Lights very much for coming
here and jammin' before us, they've been a favorite band of mine for a while.
I used to watch them at the Mineshaft. Any of you gonna come down tomorrow
, tomorrow night, we're playing at Friday's After Five, that'll be fun.
Go and drink outside in a public place, you don't get to do that very often.
Take advantage of getting wasted out in public, with a bunch of other people getting wasted out in public......many of you were expecting to see us at Nameless Field on Saturday, there was a mix up with our public relations and we can't
do that. But, uh, we're going to be here, as Lon said, openig for The
Smithereens....This next song is for Wendy Weingarden if she's here yet.....
	-one sweet world
	-the eyes of the maker
	-lover lay down
	-satellite
-ants marching (he intros this-"the same story was underneath the cap
of an Elliot's juice bottle...why do I always tell the same story I'm such a
bore...)
	-recently
	-two step
	-warehouse
	-jimi thing
	-so much to say
	-angel from montgomery
	-tripping billies
I know that this show was at least 92, because of So much to say and Eyes of
the Maker. Thanks for your help -jon

Howdy
I was at the Clemson Hootie concert last week, anybody else there? It was
pretty good, but Jelly Role (the opening band) was awful. cravin Melon was
pretty good, and Hootie was awesome. It was the second time I saw them, the
first in Charlotte with DMB. Well now that I've enlightened you I'll let you
read other mail ect. Have a good day!!

Subject: GNOX

Howdy
I heard something today about a computer program called GNOX. Has anyone
else heard about it? Apparently you can hook your guitar up to your
computer, I'm really not sure as to what else you can do with, so if you know
anything about it, e-mail me. Gracias and have a good day.

Subject: dave's necklace

I think the necklace is either a symbol of Pisces, because it looks like
two fish, or it could possibly a sort of ying and yang symbol. By the way I
am looking for anyone who has a copy of the St.Louis show from 10/21/94.
Also I need information regarding tickets for the Knoxville show on 11/13/94.
By the way does anyone know who Anne is? I know that Jane is his sister, but
who is Anne.
