this is in the FAQ.

i think the symbol on dave's necklace is the astrological glyph for the

Subject: come on

I am surprised that someone actually asked who Anne was. For those of you
who don't know, Anne was his other sister. She was killed by her husband
in February of last year. Dave had to cancel a show here in Ann Arbor
because of "family matters." Which translated to her death and her
subsequent funeral in S.Africa. Rumor has it that she was killed by her
husband, but that isn't something you probably want to pry into. So take
my word for it.
Lookin forward to seein' dmb on the 28th and 29th,

If anybody has a hq copy of the 10/15 show in b'ham, please let me know.
I do not have much to trade, but I would love to work out some kind of blank

I have seen them many times in smaller venues, but the sound at Oak Mtn.
was incredible, and I'd love to get a copy.

Subject: happiness can be such an elusive goal...

tribe poetics is a coupla guys from richmond who have jumped up on stage
a coupla times with dmb. on 7-7-93 they rapped with the band, and then
the week later on the 14th they rapped with the band on true reflections
and then entertained a very drunk audience during the setbreak, with a
guy on a turntable doing some elaborate mixing. the turntable guy also did
some pretty wacked out shit during carter's drum solo for halloween.
these were also clare's first two shows.

i didn't like it very much, but i tend to avoid most rap to begin with.
the crowd loved it, though. tribe poetics always comes on for true
reflections and they seem to be really tight with carter, because they
always at least shake hands, but usually hug.

np: hey jude. and i have a hangover, too, so this computer screen is
hurting my eyes. waa. clare: tell yourself i said hi.
everyone else: tell clare i said high. "when i see you take those same
steps......"

Subject: Re: Rap Group and All-Stars

I don't know the name of the rappers from the Flood
Zone, but they played for four or five weeks at the Flood Zone
two summers ago. The band would always end the first set with
True Reflections, and the rappers would come on with their
"Inspiration Rap" (or something like that). Between sets they
would continue to rap. One of the guys looked like he was
related to Leroi. I think they might have been from William
and Mary because one guy always wore a sweatshirt from there.
One of their songs that sticks out in my mind is "Going to
Jersey"- not very good, just annoying.
The Charlottesville All-Stars, aka the All-Star Jam was
exactly as described. The rest of the band, but no Dave, True
Reflections, and then mainly crappy stuff. I think they might
have been around before DMB.

Does anyone know anything about After Her, a song by Dave that has the same
music and some of the same words as Satellite. I have it on a bootleg that
seems to be a mix of DMB stuff(eg one side is the full band, side two is all
accoustic, just dave) Anyway, I'
I'm just curious as to the history of this song....was there Satellite and
After Her at the same time or was it an evolution thing with After Her losing
ground to Satellite.

very interesting mr. jeanfreau. you leave me questioning what kind of
first impression you make.
if this letter to me had been sincere.. i would have pointed out that
this query was not posted to minarets, but to alt.bootlegs, thus this
particular individual had
 a) already made a fool of themselves to that particular alt.channel
by posting such a question in the first place
 b) didn't know the rules of proper netiquitte one of which informs an
individual to sit back and lurk, thus gaining insightful information
they might otherwise embarrass themsleves by asking.

therefore... i will agree with your statement that this is a hilarious
question. and refrain from taking your other accusations seriously. i
must warn you.. other netters are not as jovial about this type of
'imitation flame' as i am. i suggest you watch whose footsteps you may
tread in the future.

Subject: new guitar?

hey,
This might be old news, but I haven't seen anything on the net about it.
I think Dave was playing a new guitar in Nashville and St. Louis. It was a
 black Washburn.
The set lists for both shows were nearly identical, so I don't think I'll
ever go out of my way to see dmb twice in a row again. (Rusted Root made the
 trip worth it, though.)
I talked to a guy who videotaped Nashville, and he said I could get a copy
(including an interview with the band.) I'll try to make a few copies when I
 get it.

has little relevance beyond that aghast observation, as I have no extra

Live, and the Bosstones sell out the Vic. Apparently I, and many other

looking forward to seeing the vic show w/50 people, but it's a lot better
for the band if there are a couple thousand :-). End waste of bandwidth.

Three points to this post...

1)If anyone really cares enough, I have the bootleg of Tribe poetics from
Flood Zone 7-14-93, but there is one problem, the DJ scratching wasw not
run through the board, ie I just got vocals, which also means the really
cool shit during halloween is not there. Anyways it makes a perfect
filler on the secong side of a 90 for the first set of that show.

2)Tickets to Lex went on sale here in Lex on Friday at 12.50 plus 50 cent
(yes only 50 cents) service charge at Night Owl Music, cuz Wayne's a god..

3)GO SEE Pulp Fiction! Then rent Resivior Dogs and True Romance...

Yesterday I put a message on Minarets about After Her, and someone responded to me saying that what I had was probably the studio demo of 92. I was just
listening to it and I heard people cheering, etc and as far as I know a studio
demo wouldn't have that. Perhaps this tape is a mix of different Dave shows,
but the first side is with the band(the side with a definite audience) and the
other side is only dave and no audience. If someone has any idea what's going
on with this tape give me a buzz. Thanks.

Could someone who was there (or who has the tapes) tell the rest

The jam came out of the drum duel between Fishman and Carter. Trey did
some cool rhythym stuff(and Carter tore up the funk). Then slowly, all
the members of both bands came out one at a time (Dave being last dressed
in an oversized sportjacket (David Byrne style). Jam included some Dave
speak over it. The jam slowly faded to nothin' but a few stray
notes..............then Fishman played the drum intro to Best of What's
ARound and then the whole stage went into a definitly preplanned The
Maker. Very cool.

Attempting rather politely not to step on anyone's toes... I've got
another interesting origin for Dave's necklace! I must admit that I myself
have no real knowledge of this topic, but a friend of mine (who might be
reading this, but is pretty damn lazy and probably never subscribed) spent some
time as a foreign exchange student where he met a guy from New Zealand. The
guy had a necklace like Dave's and here's the story he had for it...... The
aboriginal native-types of New Zealand carve those out of some type of bone
which holds some sacred significance to them. Each one they carve is a direct
representation of the soul of the person it's intended for. The aboriginee
spends several days with the recipient and dcelves into his souls to create the
perfect shape. As I said, each one is unique. Now, I can't say for sure
whether or not this is true or complete steaming manure, but I think it's a
groovy story. Hell, maybe he bought it at a flea market!? Anyway, it's a
cool-ass necklace!

Hello All.

The following files are available through FTP:

* The Dave Matthews Band and Minarets.Net Frequently Asked Questions File.
* The Dave Matthews Band Chords File.
* The Dave Matthews Band Tourdates File.

These are all to my knowledge the very latest versions.

In order to retrieve them, anonymous FTP to netspace.org, and go into the
DMB directory. You'll find the text-files directory in there. The
graphics directory have some really nice pictures, too.

I too have the Dave tape with a live mix on one side and a studio solo
performance on the other side. I have it labelled as a TRAX mix for the
live mix. I don't know who put this tape together or when Dave recorded
the solo tunes, but I find it interesting that this tape is in
circulation, which means someone must have made the mix and traded it a
bit. All related info is much appreciated.

First of all- yes its a church. Its called "Wait (the last name of some
dead guy i suppose) Chapel" and is on the Quad at wake forest u. Coming
from UVA (im a grad student here at wake) i too think this is a mighty
strange place to hold a concert... sigh.

Directions: On I-40 West from Greensboro-- go for about 10 miles or so
and take the Kernersville Exit (Exit #206) onto GREEN 40 (you WERE on red,
white and blue 40 before). Go for another 10 or so, and take the 52/8 to
Mt Airy (North) exit. it is the FIRST route 52/8 exit. You will pass the So
Called winston salem skyline (do you detect a note of sarcasm in my
voice?) on your Left. Go for a few miles, and take the 2nd Univeristy
Parkway Exit. go for about 3-4 miles, and you will see a big water tower
on your Right, and the brick wall entrance to Wake Forest University.
Turn right into this entrance, and go down the hill, over a few massive
speedbumps, and you will see the Wait Chapel straight ahead. There you go!
Will the chapel be a good place? youre guess is as good as mine...

Hope this helps- Kristin

I got a lot of response concerning the DATs Justin and I made of the
Nashville show. Sorry it took so long to respond but we had Fall Break
this weekend. If you've sent a message to me already, then you're on the
list and we'll make you one on my deck as soon as you send me a tape. My

I am going to be contacting some of you about a trade for some of the great

make sure you include return postage so we don't go broke sending all these
out!

Subject: Re: give Rick some free time . . . FTP instead!

Okay folks. Let me start out by saying that the below is meant not to be
a flame but as a way of assisting those of you who need the assistance.

I've gotten two pieces of mail this afternoon/tonight from people who
want to know about FTP. There are probably some other people who want to
know about FTP, and the below is advice for you too. In fact, my little
speech below can apply more generally. Let's say you've been hearing a
lot about the 'web' and 'mosaic' and all this stuff but you're wondering
what it's all about. Well, you can find out.

Here is the deal: FTP is a very common internet protocol-- probably second
in importance to e-mail. If you don't know how to use FTP, that is okay.

Because you will be able to find out very easily.

How will you find this out? Not from me!

If there is something you want to know about the internet, you should
talk to the people at your school/business/access provider. There are
people who get PAID to help you. They are called system administrators,
or user assistances; they're also known by many other names.

What Alex and Rick and me and lots of other people are doing is providing
content for you all (like running the mailing list, maintain the FAQ,
maintaining the archives, whatever). However, we don't have the time (and
at least in my case the expertise) to teach you all how to use the
internet.

So, that said-- let's say you want to get the FAQ through FTP. What
should you do if you don't know what FTP is?

Ask someone at your site.

Talking to Jay Stevens (owner of Ziggy's, guy who booked the show),
the reason the show is in Wait Chapel is the local coliseum was booked
for the date the band wanted to play in Winston, and the chapel was
the only venue available.

Talking to John Jolly (security manager for the Wait Chapel show),
there will be ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING of any kind inside the Wait
Chapel. However, you will be given a wristband, and will be able to
come and go. This rule will be strictly enforced. It seems that at
last week's Widespread Panic show, $80,000 damage was done to the
chapel by smokers, and they don't want to repeat the problem. If you
get caught smoking ANYTHING you will be immediately kicked out of the
show. No questions asked.

Anyone who needs a copy of the FAQ, mail me a request...

Hey there. This is regarding the post of the old song "celebrate."
If its the same tape i've heard, i think its the neanderthal
beginnings of working out "Two-Step." Speaking of old songs has
anyone ever heard the solo Dave tune "No New Directions" ???
I have this old phonograph sounding tape of Dave singing this song.
it's not a spectacular song but i never heard it 'cept for this tape.

 some of the words are:

                    "Whats yours and whats mine
                      in these troubled times,
                     Nooooo neew di-rec-tions."

There now try to sing it like Dave, but if your at a public terminal
be courteous to your neighbor! I'm a new minaret.netter so if i'm
spazzin', let me know.

                      "Seven tumbling oceans surround,
the ground that I dance upon,
Red and Black and the rainbows fire,

Your right about it not having a soundhole, but it said "Washburn"
on the top of the head.
Maybe it's a Gibson Chet Atkins Washburn Series. :)

Hey all,
Thanks for the reply about trading DMB bootlegs. Needless to say, I have
been swamped with proposals. Unfortunately, the only restriction to this
offer is my own ability to process these requests. As a result, I am going
to have to ask for a little bit of a breather for a while. Let me try and
deal with all of these requests, and then I will see if I can get back into
the swing of things again.

To all of those who send messenges, I will try and get back to you all as
soon as I can write the letters. I will let you all know what I can and
can't do for you.

Thanks

I just got back from the show about ten minutes ago. It was
tremendous, and it was only six bucks! I'm happy for once to be away
from D.C., where it's now $20 to see Dave. (But still well worth it)
They only played about two hours, but it was excellent.

A Washburn??? That doesn't sound right... Washburn isn't known for
quality products, but then I haven't picked one up in a while...
I could see maybe a Martin or another Gibson. Last time I talked to
Dave (4 mos. ago) he told me he was interested in purchasing one of
Gibson's Country Jumbo guitars because of its "big" sound. Can anyone
verify this...

hello,
i happened to see the posts about this new guitar thing and i
have to agree with the guy who said it was a black washburn. i was
lucky to have caught the show in nashville on the 20th and spent the
whole night right in dave's face in the second row. he played his
old gibson chet atkins and a black washburn. the washburn dave said
was "my new guitar" and its "fucked up". No soundhole, its black, and
it is a washburn. he must have gotten it as a gift. i hope this settles
the mini dispute on this subject.

Daves new guitar is most certainly a washburn. I saw also that the Gibson
logo on the neck of his Chet was covered with duct tape. Possibly he may
be getting an endorsement. Also, washburn does make fine guitars. They
are just known for being well priced. A-lot of people touring play them
now. Check out the Edwin McCain band from Charleston. I played his after
a show in Hilton Head, and it was very nice. P.S. they are a hot band.
They are about to go into the studio next month. JOHN ALAGIA is producing
the album. He and dave are similar, but do different things with their
bands. Check him out on the new AWARE CD, or write me back, I have some
DAT boots from this summer.

Regarding the ongoing guitar to-do: I must say that I, as well, saw the word
"Washburn" written on the head of Dave's guitar. Now, I do not consider
myself an expert on the guitar-production industry, but I find it unlikely that
Gibson would develop a new model that showcased the logo of one of its
biggest competitors. In short, I agree with the bloke from Kentucky.

I think it's a Washburn SBF-80 solid body electric acoustic.

Dave at the Barrymore (an 800 person theater that wasn't even sold out).

amazing. They played a different version of Dancing Nancies with another

Hey there. i was perusing thru the FAQ and under the OTHER people
that jam with Dave there was someone left out. His name is Mike
Durham and he's played with DMB a few times and i believe he is also a
musical companion of Boyd's. There are tapes out there with him on
it. Mike is an incredible crazy jazz guitar player. fast...faster...
fastest...around these parts (Richmond and Charlottesville,VA) the
only person who touches him is our friend Tim Reynolds. Anyway, i
thought i had to do this guy justice in the Minarets world.

there is a tape where Dave introduces Mike and says he wants to take guitar
lessons from him after the show!........ a tape to look for is the after
HORDE jam with DMB in the summer of '93. The Samples jam with Dave as
well as Oteil(sp?) from Aqurium Rescue Unit. Oteil(bass) and Mike
Durham have a guitar dual and they F**&4#1! jam. Dave adds some of
his own language at times, too! i need to get the exact date to ya'll
tomorrow. i taped the show but my tapes came out bogus. there should
be some DAT's out there and i know someone taped it to a MINI DISC.
that would be a hot to find that one.
i know Mike has moved from around here and i think he went to
good ol' Nashville. thats the right place for him 'cause he's a sick
MoFo on the axe. it was also rumored that he was gonna play on
Remember 2... but something happened. more on that later.
take it easy and smoke your mind for a short time.

my karma needs a little boosting right now, so i decided to post this here

you'd like to hear what Phish sounds like...so, i have a high quality copy
of the Phish concert in Lexington 4-20-94. DMB opened for them that
night, and came on in the second set to jam with them. it's a very sweet
jam": Phish starts out playing "You Enjoy Myself," and members of DMB join
in one by one, and suddenly Leroi takes off into "Somewhere Over the
Rainbow," taking the others along. great stuff.

so, i'm offering this show to anyone who's interested. i'd entertain some
trades, if you have something unusual or excellent, but mainly this is a
blanks-and-post kind of thing. i can only take a few, so i'll post a

CHA (& to all),
I was at the Richmond jam that you speak of. It was at a place named the
Flood Zone. After Phish finished jammin' at the HORDE show, who played
after a nice Wide Spread set, everone flew down to down town Richmond. It
was my first Dave show; I had been listening to his tapes for a long time
at this point -- my friend had drilled them into me. Anyway, it was a
great show, and I'm not just saying that because it was my first; and let
me tell you Otiel can sure JAM!!!
If you wouldn't mind making me a copy of it, or if you get a new one, I
could hook you up with something nice:

As Chardy has already stated, be prepared to dance....
But a fuller explanation.....
The lead singer sounds alot like David Byrne in his Talking Heads days,
but the music is different. Lots of percussion going on with cool fast
flowing rythms that are very easy to dance to. I'd definitely check out
their cd "When I Woke". Its got some great shit on it.

See ya'll at the Horse Center, then you understand what they're all about..

BTW a great Phish show last nite at UVa
See ya soon Rick, Emily, Gray, Clare and Blake.......

I'm completely psyched that I found this list...(and that DMB is
coming to Oregon in November (Why not Seattle?)) I just d/led
all 6 megs of pictures and stuff.. 'tis great. I have a question
about one of my present favorite bands. In Rhyme & Reason, there's
reference to "needle to the vein" etc... Now I still don't know if Jeff
Buckley (other favorite band) is on soe harder stuff, but I oh so hate
for great musicicans to be screwed up on big-time stuff like Heroine or
Coke... kind of greedy in one respect, but it's really just concern. So
is this autobiographical, as much of Daves stuff seems to be, or
postulation, or was I wrong on the point of where Daves lyrics come from,
or what?

Will,
I can't say for sure, but from what I've seen of Dave and the band
in the past years, I don't think anyone of them would subdue themselves
to such a crazy drug as heroine. Granted, the band definitely does not
pass up the oppurtunity to fire up a phat spliff, but heroine is going a
little far. My guess would be that Dave, just like any rock star, has
seen other musicians fall to the addiction of heroine. I have a feeling
that as Dave continues to enter the mainstream and be exploited by cheesy
sorority girls, as he will inevitably be, many more rumors about Dave's
personal life (i.e. sexual orientation, etc.) will be fabricated. It is
up to the true fans to appreciate him for his brilliant lyrics and
unstoppable musical ability, and not to judge him on any other standards.
By the way, if anyone out there has a bootleg of the DMB jamming with
Greg Howard at the floodzone when Leroi's nephew's rap group accompanied
the band on an encore of Halloween, I would greatly aprreciate a bootleg
trade.

Letterman and Paul Shaffer are both big Traveler fans, Paul even plays on

that DMB could perform, don't use BT as any sort of gauge. Just a note, Ian

i also knew someone could do it better than i. and hark.. i was

i hate to tell you this, but DMB used to play 2X if not 3X as long a
set as they do now. they used to hardly ever have opening acts and
Dave used to come out solo and sing away for about 45 min. yes it was
way groovy and thats how i started to love 'em. cause they gave so
much music to us! but hey they still do. i remmember one nite ( the
miguel valdez benefit at the flood zone) carter, darryl rose and some
other people kept on jammin' long after the soundboard was turned
off. they were jamming on congas and such. i left at 3:30 A.M. cause
i had an 8:00 class(uggghhhh) but my bro said they played until he
didn't care what time it was! yes they DMB contains gifted, beautiful
musicians! i have many more stories of late nite jams and such but i
been in this basement too long, my eyes are turning red and i need to

well, seems this net is pretty balanced for the most part. for every
time i come on saying that true reflections is the low point in the
dmb setlist, someone says it's the greates, and more or less the same
for granny.

so let's balance out the bainbridge/durham thing. i hate 'em. i hate aru,
too, but i solve that problem by not going to aru shows. but on 7-27-93, when
i went to hear dave band, i got to hear a rip-ass first set, and then a second
set that was nothing more than oteal impressing himself and durham, beauford,
and whats-his-name from indecision being the only ones who could keep up.
stefan was completely shut out of the second set and sat in the corner like
a dejected child. after the show he was visibly upset, and if i'm not
mistaken, dave simply walked off stage and let them have their fun since they
decided to steal the show.
it's all well and good the bainbridge and durham can jam there asses off
and steal the show, but to do it when they're guests? i wanted to see
dave band, not half of aru. i'd already seen aru once that day, and that
was enough.
i've also had the displeasur of meeting mike not once, but several dozen
times over the course of the summer that he worked in "summer rhythms" at
kings dominion. i spent a great deal of time hanging out with freinds in
the entertainment lounge, and all he did was sit in the hall playing tunes
to himself. there's one thing to practice incessantly. there's another thing
to really enjoy playing. but's it's entirely another thing to simply believe
that your music is more important than the rest of the world. i don't have
much respect for a musician who is so arrogant with his music that he
doesn't have time to be polite the person trying to step over his lazy ass in
the hall to get out of a building while he sits there and plays "cliffs of
dover" by eric johnson.

i'm really sorry to be so vicious, but that night was a big downer. i know
a lot of people here disagree, but i also know that a lot of people here
really dig oteal and aru.

I think the best way we can get Jambay to play the east coast is to
spread the word as much as possible around here as well as everywhere
else possible.

To anyone who has never Jambay, they are a fantastic band who play all
original music that completely rocks.

In any case, I have been given a tape to spread. It is a clone of the
master board from 6-14-93 Fox Theatre - Boulder, CO
I have not listened to the whole tape yet so I cannot provide you with a
setlist or exact times. It is on 2 120min dats, but I doubt it is 240min
long. I will post more specifics later.

If you want this tape, send me an email saying "yes i want it".
I should also know whether you want a dat or analog copy and if you can
make copies for others.

I don't know if this will follow the usual tree distribution cycle & I
will make that decision when I find out what kind of response I get.

Three posts in one day, I think thats more than I've posted in the last
six months.

Anyway, to the business at hand. I hope I don't disappoint anyone with
this, but frankly whether or not the band choose to partake in any
illegal (or legal for that matter) substances is none of our damn business!

Be they great musicians, the dave matthews band are real people who have
lives of their own. I see us here to discuss the music rather than
worrying about who does what kind of drugs. Perhaps if the quality of
the music were to suffer, there may be reason to speculate, but that is
clearly not the case here (go ahead and disagree with me).

Hope I haven't offended anyone with this, but I feel there's just too
much trash on the bandwidth these days.

To all of those who don't know this, (I myself stumbled across
it), there is a DMB section on the ever growing "archive.phish.net" FTP
site. You can find stuff about DMB, BT, Jambay, Horde, Phish, and a
whole bunch of other bands. DMB has 6 megs of pictures, small versions
of the same, a chords file which helps you along with playing the guitar
parts ( and _some_ sax and violin) to selected dmb songs. There is also
an FAQ, which explains this list, band info, history, taping stuff,
trading stuff, net stuff, stuff stuff, and more stuff.
I feared the responses to my "quick question"...

Anyone who doesn't have FTP access or doesn't understand it, send
me some mail, I'd be happy to tell you..
Also, even though I'm lagging on a phish tree due to wierd
incidents, and need to finish up another 1 for 1 trade, I'd be interested
in running a DMB tree if anyone wants to offer up seeds, or I can wait
and use one of the three shows I'll be seeing here in the NW in November.
Running the tree would include making custom colour J-cards for dat and
analog..

godess, i'm going to stare at the setting sun and smoke my mind for a
short time!

Subject: Mike Darrum/Durham

i'm not sure who the person or people by this name who've played with DMB
might be, but i can tell you that the're not from the Aquarium Rescue
Unit. ARU includes (or included): Oteil Burbridge, Col. Bruce, Jimmy
Herring, Apt. q-258, Matt Mundy, Count Mbutu, and Chuck Leavell. if
anyone knows for sure who this Durham/Darrum fella is, we'd all be
interested to find out.

Subject: Chicago, crowd, indy,etc

hey,
Just got back from a wonderful show at the Vic Theater in Chicago.
Nice set, 2 hours and 5 minutes. I think Dave put on a great show for all the
record execs there. Rusted Root absolutely kills. Reallly fresh, great sound,
present well in concert. I am hooked. Anyways back to Dave. Really good set
IMHO. My favorite was the Watchtower encore, which I feel that 75% of the
crowd didn' figure out until they started jamming hard. About the crowd. I
have never been so dissapointed about a crowd in my life. Nothing against some
of the fine schoools in my hometwon, but could the frat boys have been any more
drunk??? I felt like killing the 3 meatheads in front of me who insisted on
talking during every song and yelling "DAVE" during times when he was talking
between songs (probabl one of the funnier times during a show). I'm a pacifist
at heart but had to restrain myself. Also during Cry Freedom Cry noone was
listening, which is one of his classic songs IMHO. ANyways enough bitching
about the crowd.

Steve

P.S. Does anybody know if Rusted Root is still opening at the Indiapolis show?
Any info would be cool...
