Lexington VA

jcrother Thu Mar 3 13:30:50 1994

also, after reading the latest phish newsletter of a couple days ago, i would
assume that no taping would be allowed because lexington isn't on the list of
tapers shows? or will there just not be a taping section? god, i'd hate to
actually miss the show and then not be able to get a tape of it, too....

sorry forgot to add this little tidbit in the last post.

i'm assuming taping will be conducted like all the other shows. since
the Lexington and Winston-Salem shows are both general admission there
will be a taping section and anyone can bring in gear.

anyone hear differently?

also i wouldn't count on getting a board feed for DMB. that would make
things really difficult for both bands and phish will probably ask DMB to
not allow them for these two shows. i'll try to find out for sure but
management probably won't even know until the time of the show.

True Reflections; kg

kmk4g@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Thu Mar 3 17:19:49 1994

I think Rick hates True Ref for the wrong reason. He says it's not good
because they don't jam on it (also that it's cheesy.) If all songs they
didn't jam on sucked, wouldn't we have to hate Help Myself? Not only does it
sound the same every time, there isn't even one solo in it. Same for the
Jane Song, Christmas, and a few others. Just a thought.

Does anyone have ANY Sept. 92 DMB?

Re: phish/dmb & dave's sister

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Thu Mar 3 20:59:25 1994

Reid -- I would send your song to the band's management and put it attention
to Dave. I bet Dave would get a real kick out of that and who knows, if he
likes it, maybe he would play it at one of his acoustic shows. Here's the
Charlottesville, VA 22903.

And about the Lexington and W-S Dave/Phish shows. I'm sure there will be
plenty of tapers. As far as I know the reason some shows have tapers tickets
is because those venues are restricted seating. For the general admission
shows (including Lex and W-S) anyone can tape.

My friend at UVa got four tix yesterday for me and three friends for the Lex
show. (Planning on roadtripping from Chicago to see Dave at these two
incredible shows -- 14 hrs to see Dave -- can anyone top this?! Well, ok,
Phish added a little incentive) Anyway my friend said he got to Plan 9 20
minutes after the tickets went on sale and he bought the last few of the 300
tickets they were originally alotted. Anyone know how many this seldom-used
(or maybe never-used) venue will hold and will it be inside or outside. I've
heard there will be camping.

Just talked to management and i mentioned the rumor that the Winston

as far as they were concerned it was still on.
where did that info come from (Rick, Gregg??)

no problems with 4-21. chris actually laughed at me when i told

and by the way brett, isn't it a bit condescending to think that for
an extra $7 we're seeing phish? i saw phish for $20 over break,
so in all honesty, i feel like i'm seeing dave for free. he _is_
only the opening band, no matter how high a pedestal we have him

as for trax being $9, think of the demand for repeat performances
there at this point. (can anyone fill me in on the price of phish's

well, as far as i know it's in a section of the horse center which is brand new
and has never been used for concerts before. from what i've heard, it seats
about 6-7000 folks so this is going to be one mother of a show. if i remember
correctly, it's the new indoor stadium they use mainly for rodeos (!!). maybe
they'll bring out some clowns and bulls between set breaks...

anyway, expect a very large place. but very nice -- the horse center is a very
very impressive place. i'm not even really into horses, but i've been to the
horse center a few times for events just because it's such a nice place to go.
i think you'll be impressed by the looks of the place but disappointed with how
big the show will be. but imagine -- seeing dave in front of 6,000 cheering
fans? what a rush for the band... intense.

Well, I DO hate Jane Song.

I disliked it for a year, but now I love it. It peaks really well, I think
because of Carter's cymbals during "he and the queen..." Learn to love it.
Does anybody going to Phish Winst-salem, Atlanta, or Charlotte, have any room
in there car?

who have seen them, but didn't like it, try marijuana helps greatly (they had
a petition to sign to put them in the Hemp 100, and they belong there.) They
are highly underrated. They jam just as hard as virtually anyone out there
(minus Phish).

rick thompson

so i can't believe i'm joining this whole boyd debate
being that it is stupid and incrediably pretensious to
pretend to know how Boyd feels about the music he is part of...

so anyhow Boyd's grin is no more radiant than Carter's
which, in my opinion, is an amazingly beautiful expression
of a mood that DMB shows have. As Dave P. once said
at a show at trax, "i am loving life"
to see music that is so much of a part of the musician's life,
to know that they are lov'n it up there, that makes the show
mean so much from the standpoint of a bond between musicians
and audience... (if you don't know what i mean read, _Jazz_ by
Toni dearest)
anyhow, not that dave, leroi, and staphan aren't like this--they are--
i'd have to say that True Reflections works as expression
and there is no point in making statements like
Granny and TR are commercial songs b/c that reflects
a lack of apprecation for what music means _beneath the surface_
of the sounds--think about it b/4 responding...
read the prologue to Invisible Man

Btw, opening for the Junkies was a group from Atlanta called Billy

they rated their first album an A-... They're two guys playing acoustic
guitars with tons of energy and great voices.. At the show, I called them

(or maybe never-used) venue will hold and will it be inside or outside. I've

Well, to start off with what I know, the horse center has NEVER had any
type of music out there at all in any large scale. (occasional high
school bands play the star spangled banner to kick off horse shows...)
Camping is VERY doubtful because there realy isn't any place to out
there. Perhaps they meant RV camping, I know that a lot of the horse
people bring RVs and I'd imagine that there are hookups there. But,
there is a campground about 3 miles down the same road that the horse
center is on. I can give directions if anybody needs them.

Inside or out is an interesting question. There is an inside andan
ouside arena. The indoors one is newer and seats about 7,000. But, they
could always set up another stage somewhere else on the grounds. There
is a long rolling hill in the back that usually houses the fox chase,
jumping track, etc but could probably be used as space for a stage. I
don't know, just some info,.

This should be a neat place to see a show, mainly because it is 1) so
close to the interstate, 2) close to a beautiful watering hole in a town
called Goshen, about 18 miles past the horse center on the same road, and
3) well, I can't really think of a three, oh, there is a Texaco near the
exit that you can get a lot of junk food and other munchables at.
So, go to Lexington and enjoy the day. Graham

Lexington questions

@mail.trincoll.edu:sean.berry@mail.trincoll.edu Mon Mar 7 21:34:35 1994

Is the Lexington Phish/DMB show a Washington & Lee sponsered show? I know
that a 1000 tickets were set aside for W&L students(I think?) If it is true
that would be a pretty big concert for a school that size (circa 2000
students.) But if not, I can understand why Dave Matthews would play there
because that is a second home (next to Flood Zone & Trax), but Phish is
getting pretty big-city, and Lexington is about 2.5 miles from nowhere.
These questions plague me, can anyone answer them?

the lexington show of phish and dave is not a w&l sponsered show
it's sponsered by celar door and being held at the horse center
the local music stoor, Night Owl Music, was given 1,000 tickets to sell
to anyone who came through the door (a lot of which where w&l students)
as of yesterday, wayne had sold around 900 of these tickets

lexington is kinda' a second home for dave ... he played tons of shows
here during the fall of 92 and winter and spring of 93 .. although w/
increased success he hasn't played in lexington since haloween of 1993

it'll be good to have him back

God Street Wine New Years Tree Announcement

budkee@unvax.union.edu Tue Mar 8 18:26:41 1994

All right, we have here the first ever tree administered by
Eric Budke. This is also the first tree for GSW since
finewine was created. The tapes are from New Years at
Wetlands in New York City. The show was hot as was
Wetlands on that night. There was one acoustic set before
midnight and two electric to kick off the new year.

Send your sign-up to budkee@unvax.union.edu
The form is below.

I am going to try and keep this tree as basic as possible.
Not paying much attention to deck types, or preferred tape
types. Maybe next time. I'm still testing a lot of things out
as far as making this as automatic as possible. So please
bear with me. This time the only important things are where
on the tree you want to be, i.e. branch or leaf and what
mode you will be doing the taping in i.e. digital or analog or
both. I am not the seed so begging me for them will do no
good. This tree will be open for a while. Due to my break
schedule I will be inaccessible from March 14th until the last
days of the month. I plan to close it soon after I get back.
Doing this over a 2400 baud modem on a parent's portable
is not my idea of a fun break. As of right now the tree will
close April 1, 1994.

The key to signing up for this tree will be your subject. An
D-D# digital to digital w SCMS=00
SD-D# digital to digital w/o SCMS=00
D-A# digital to analog
D-L digital leaf
A-A# analog to analog
A-L analog leaf

The # signifies the number of copies you will be willing to
make OF THE ENTIRE SHOW. For the leaves this is
obviously unnecessary. For those who don't know. Leaves
do not make copies for others. Any of the other levels do
make copies.

Anyone wanting to be a DAT branch (D-D) MUST be
able to make copies with SCMS=00. I am putting in the
SD-D option to try and broaden the DAT levels. People
signing up for this level will tentatively be assigned to be
made copies from D-D people and will make copies for D-
A and D-L people. If there are enough D-D the SD
people will be defaulted to D-L status, unless there is a
need for more D-A in which case I will mail you people
separately, after the tree is closed.

My filter is DUMB. Dummer than I. It is case insensitive
so d-d will work fine but right now I do not know how to
make it take general statements like you would use a * in
DOS. They are really high in my filter order, so it should
pick out most errors as long as the '-' is in there with the
acceptable letters (and numbers) on each side. I will try to
include as many major error correction filters as possible,
but the benefits stop paying off after a while. And please
don't take in upon yourself to try and screw up the filters :)

I will be using the information below mainly to double
check that you did things correct and to hopefully smooth
things over if there is a problem.

Just so you know any things that aren't picked up by my
filter are sent to my incoming box and while I don't get as
much mail a day as Sean Kennedy, I do get much more than
the average college punks I have met, so please follow the
above format for subjects. It will be repeated below in case
you forgot it from before and/or you still have time to
change it.

One last thing. I will not be using your location in the
setting up of the tree. It will be random, more or less
associated by when you signed up for the tree. I personally
like to know people to trade with over a wide area because
there is usually a much broader selection of shows to trade
from. For example two college tapers in Schenectady
(which I don't think there are) are likely to have pretty much
all of the same shows. Where as if you happen to hook up
with someone in CA or another country there are a lot of
shows they may have that you don't.

Sorry this is so long winded.

The tapes are from a pair of AKG 460's onto a DAT. There
is a minor screwup when the power went out in the
building, but otherwise it is great. The show approx. 3
hours and 15 mins. The masters are on a 90 min and a three
hour. I don't think there is any way to make it fit on two
analog tapes of 100 mins w/o cuts. So expect it to be 3 90
min analog tapes.

The set list it.

Leonardo, I Found A New Baby, Waiting for the Tide to
Rise, Full Moon of Love (kd lang song), Tired of Sleeping
Around With You, Dear Prudence, Swing Low Sweet
Chariot (about 40 minutes)

Electric 1: New Years Eve Countdown, Nightengale,
Hungry Again, Epiphony, Crazy Iranian, Hammer & Spike
- Bring Back The News, Mile By Mile - (power failure --
somone pulled a fire alarm and the PA & lights cut out, but
the band still had power on stage so jammed the tune out
for about 10 minutes but never sang the last verse.
Eventually they got the power back on) - Driving West,
Pussycat (w/Auld Lang Syne), Goodnight Gretchen

Electric 2: Stranger, Vanity Street, Cheap Utah Blues -
Crashing Down, Mantaloken Shore, Ballroom - Wendy,
Epilog - Stone House

the new CD

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Tue Mar 8 20:08:46 1994

Can anyone explain the logic behind releasing this 5-song CD available only at
shows? I was talking to a friend of mine who is somewhat familiar with the
music industry, and he said sometimes when a band first signs with a big
label, the company will put out what's called an EP -- a 5 or 6 song CD sold
at a regular full-length CD price. The idea behind it is to test the
marketablility/potential commercial success of the band's recording efforts --
but this only works when the CD is available in stores distributed nationwide.

It seems to me if the band puts out a CD available only at shows, it would be
directed at DMB fans, not just a walk-in at a record store. And if it's for
the fans, why only five songs?
Maybe a call to the management could answer some of these questions.

Sorry if this has already been asked/answered. (I get the digest)

Dave n' Tim

@VM1.MCGILL.CA:BH7N@MUSICB.MCGILL.CA Tue Mar 8 20:26:19 1994

I have to disagree with Kerry when he says that Dave and
Tim would probably ruin Ants and Nancies by playing them
as a Duet. I was at the Birchmere show and I truly enjoyed
the show. I had only heard one old Dave/Tim tape before where
Tim is playing a 12-string guitar and he really interferes
with the songs. Anyway, I was pretty reluctant to go see the
show (thinking I should save my money for WSP) so imagine
my surprise when Tim almost stole the show!

First of all the sound at the Birchmere was excellent and our seats
were right on the stage so I could hear the actual music coming
from the guitars and not so much from the P.A. I kept on singing
LeRoi's lines to myself during some of the songs but I really think
that Tim played some of the most tasteful lead guitar lines I
have ever heard. He is also a technical wizard. Minarets and Nancies
were some of the highlights from that night (I was so glad to see
cry freedom on the setlist although I felt like I was cheating by
already knowing what he was going to play). Dave looked like he
was having a great time, and I'm really looking forward to hearing
it on the CD.

Kwon

P.S. My brother thinks that the only reason Phish is playing with
DMB is because the only way Phish can sell tickets is to get Dave
to go "wiggle his ass" on stage. 8-)

Lexvegas questions

gspice@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Mar 8 22:46:27 1994

Is the Lexington Phish/DMB show a Washington & Lee sponsered show? I know
that a 1000 tickets were set aside for W&L students(I think?) If it is true
that would be a pretty big concert for a school that size (circa 2000
students.) But if not, I can understand why Dave Matthews would play there
because that is a second home (next to Flood Zone & Trax), but Phish is
getting pretty big-city, and Lexington is about 2.5 miles from nowhere.
These questions plague me, can anyone answer them?

Well, I can try. First of all, no, it is not a W&L function. I think
that Cellar Door is doing it, but don't quote me. Certainly, some
booking agency. Although I don't go to W&L, I don't think that you
understand what kind of money those circa 2000 spend on bands. They've
had an amazing spectrum of bands for the school's size (REM, Allman Bros,
Smithereens, Widespread, Marshall Crenshaw, BT, etc). But, I guess none
of that matters here. I think that the concert is in Lexington
(technically it isn't in Lex, it's in Rockbridge County) because there is
new management at the horse center and because it will be an interesting
place to put on and see a show, especialy if it turns out to be outside
and they let camping on the grounds of the horse center. i don't think
that the people out at the horse center have any idea what they're
getting themselves into by allowing camping, but that's a different
bewarned, they don't like people that they haven't gone hunting with for
the past 15 years. Figure it out. Eat drink and be merry, Graham

Dave & Tim- ANTS

@mail.trincoll.edu:sean.berry@mail.trincoll.edu Wed Mar 9 15:39:11 1994

I am in utter concurrence w/Kwon about Tim's playing on Ants. When I first
heard a version of Dave and Tim's Ants(Prism Coffee House-4.22.93), I
thought to myself that Tim's solo's were an incredible alternative
interpretation of LeRoi's solo's. He uses the same scale in the final solo,
but picks and chooses great single notes. He speeds up, slows down, builds,
uses clever arpeggios, what more could you want from an instumental solo?

Well, it's just muy opinion, but...
We got both discs in at the radio station here today. And on the bio
sheet, it says that the 5 song one is only available at shows and it
includes more songs than are on the radio one. Presumably studio
ones.

The 5 song disc we got here had radio edited versions of songs off
R2T. And remember they went into the studio a while ago (I believe)
and recorded some stuff. My guess is htat RCA probably didn't want
these, or wasn't willing to purchase them, so DMB and management or
whaever decided to let the public get a copy of them before anything
went out on RCA. And I don't expect the RCA album to be out until the
fall or later.

Just a guess.

1st timer

@VM1.MCGILL.CA:BH7N@MUSICB.MCGILL.CA Thu Mar 10 11:39:17 1994

Concerning the post where I asked what song would be

All the responses I've gotten so far have suggested
Seek Up, Jimi Thing or What would you say?, all three
of which I had thought of myself. The only thing is
that Seek Up Jimi Thing (esp. the Trinity Coll version-
Thnks Eric!) would be a perfect choice if it wasn't
so long! (No objections here) You can't really fit that
at the end of a normal length set as a filler.

What would you say? has that great guitar interlude thing,
and those cool "revolving" solos, but I have to say that
the lyrics could probably have been written by our
favorite fiddler. (Not that I could probably do any better)

I think I might just have to stick to a good Recently or
Minarets.

The CD5 - (Recently)

jcrother Thu Mar 10 19:28:14 1994

here's some more info on the new CD...hopefully this'll clear some of
those questions that have been floating around.

the new CD (with five songs on it and called 'Recently') will cost
somewhere around $7.

Recently is not connected to RCA nor is it old studio stuff, but is
"something the band and management wanted to do for the fans...to give
them a product of very high caliber."

management/band/ect...had to do some radio mix downs and the results
ended up on a CD promo called Recently....they liked it so much they
wanted everyone to have a copy...but also realized that four of the songs
were on R2T so.....they took three of the radio mix downs off and added
four new ones recorded from various places....

hope this clears things up a little...

does this answer your question bob g.?

I actually like the What would you say lyrics. Boyd couldn't touch them. I
think what happened was Dave wrote the good lyrics (cannot tell at best,
cannot speak for all the rest), and then he had a mind block, so he asked

Hey Minaretters!

How bout that new DMB newsletter? I was very impressed w/ the color
insert catalogue and the stylin' DMB merchandise.

Once again it's time for my 2 cents...

I've never really liked What would You Say too much. It's kinda a
happy song, and happy songs are good and you can jump around to them,
but it lacks that special stirring Dave power that I experience in a
good Seek Up or Spotlight. Consequently I think Spotlight would be a
good song for a first timer--but, I recently found out that Dave hates
to do that song. Kind of a bummer cuz it's definitely one of my
favorites. However, you can't deny the appeal of a song like Ants
Marching to a first timer, or Dancing Nancies. Jimi Thing is somewhat
for the more advanced DMB listener...hee, hee...I mean it is most
assuredly in my top 5, but a first timer just might not be able to
appreciate this Dave tune...I don't know it's just a crazy hunch.

Oh well.
Typetya later.

cecliff@vt.edu Mon Mar 14 16:12:43 1994

Dave Matthews, Gettin' Busy In Your Backyard
"bedroom guitarist" in Charlottesville who had performed in public maybe
five times. Now, he's filling clubs with a hot band and a new RCA record
deal. Their first CD, Remember Two Things, sells as fast as great big Bama
Records can press it.
flavor of the month. They're on a roll because they're good. A couple of
weeks ago, Dave and I tried to asses the past, present and the future in 25
minutes or less. We started with the future- recording their major label
debut.
we've done has been like, 'Okay, we're going to record an album- you have
four days.' And it's really hard to get anything going."
most of R2T) the roas leaves little time for steady writing or finetuning
arrangements. "At the rate we've played in the last year or two, we could
probably count rehearsals on one hand. If I write a new song or we come up
with somehting at soundcheck, then I'll play that, or we'll play that,
until the band knows it and everyone can slowly add themselves."
"This band can be as strong, or stronger, in the studios as we are on
stage. We play other instruments. LeRoi will be able to bring out his
flute and penny whistles and oboe. And Carter's a great conga and timbale
player." As for Dave, "I just plunk on the piano, but i like plunking. I
don't want people to say, 'Hey, I've already got all that stuff on my
bootleg.' I'd like to put out a record that doesn't sound like us live,
for that reason- one that has the power of it, but has a little more
clarity."
style came partly from trying to fill out the sound back in his bedroom and
partly from music across the ocean. "A lot of African vocals have turned
me on. I don't understand what they're saying, but I understand how they
phrase things and how the words sound, so I think percussion and rhythm is
probably the biggest influence."
played (mostly classical and rock and roll). There were some formal
lessons, but "I was a bad student, as I was with any other activity that
concerned teachers," he confesses. "My mind would wander to the trees
outside, rather than to whatever was at hand. So most of my training has
come from people that I've known who have turned me on to cool music."
songwriting. The key, as good writers know, is being open to one's
environment, no matter that the location. "Being in England, Europe, New
York, wherever you are, there are things. Even air in a different place
and the way people talk can be an inspiration."
the diversity- black, white and native american- within the Dave Matthews
Band. "Any place has its problems with community. We have all those
problems, too, but it's like any other family or any other business. You
just get along with each other and as much as you want to be in eachothers'
hearts, you are."
help record a demo. Carter Beauford (drums) and LeRoi Moore(reeds) were
veterans from a successful area jazz group, TR3. Friends recommended
Stefan Lessard as a young but incredible bass player, which he is. Boyd
Tinsley (fiddle), who had his own band, joined later. They got some gigs
to rehearse for the demo and then some more gigs, and , "then we looked
around after a year and said, 'Oh, we didn't end up as a studio band.' So
we didn't really intend this, but that's what happened, which is great."
It's simple, really. "I didn't want to play it. I wanted to keep it as
close to an acoustic band as we could. It's been a healthy thing to
develop our abilities together without it, because you can't rely on a wash
or on distortion to hide bad notes. There they are. If you screw up, it's
in everyone's faces."
island (hey! It could happen). Here they are; you'll need a pencil.
"Abdulla Ibraham, because he's so soothing. "English Settlement" gy XTC- I
love their old, dirty sound. I'm trying to think of something a little
unusual, so when you're on the desert island you don't maintain too much of
the Top 40 mentality. And Trio Bulgarka- it's great music."
the Top 40 mentality. For proof, we can look to the orchestra of crickets
and massive thunderstorm at the end of R2T. "There was this huge
thunderstorm outside where we were recording. So we just took a blank out
there and recorded it. We did the same thing with the crickets."
and crickets." Sometimes the real think _is_ already in your own backyard.

WatchTower
Dancing Nancies

Absoulutly amazing versions of Ants Marching, Minarets, Typical Situation,
Watch tower, warehouse, Tripping Billies and Dancing nancies. Watchtower
brought out a mess of flying strings, broken from rage and furry. Dancing
nancies as well as Minarets had emense feeling behind them which gave the songs
a power. I tried comparing them to other versions but no comparisons could be
made. The lyrics to true reflection (if that is the name) are really cheesy.
Carter started off in a solo for the second encore, then each member came in
with thier own solo until out of nowhere came Ants Marching. The $4 entrance
charge was also a bonus. I was too lazy to make it out to the other Florida
shows. One thing I realized is that the band played pretty short sets. Both
sets were about an hour, not encluding encores. Anyway, a great show.

jimi thing for a first timer...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Mar 15 10:04:48 1994

jamie mentioned that he wouldn't give jimi thing to a dmb virgin,
but i want to point out that this particular 1st timer is going to
be hearing this song coming off of a double set of phish. personally,
i think that jimi thing would be by far the best choice to introduce
a phisher to. just the whole jammin' groovin, whatever....

One thing I realized is that the band played pretty short sets. Both
sets were about an hour
has anybody noticed that this seems to be a common length for his shows. We
need more shows like Trinity(my school so I feel I have to gloat) w/
Minarets-Bluewater and Jimi Thing-Seek Up.

I haven't gotten in touch with my friend who goes there. post it to the net

Where did all the rare songs go?

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Tue Mar 15 18:21:38 1994

Is it me or has DMB been relying on R2t songs a little too much in
their sets lately? What ever happened to Blue Water? Two Step?
Spotlight? Rhyme or Reason?

Also I don't know if this is really know on much of the net, but there
is also a song #35. It's a song that Dave wrote about a percussionist
who used to be in the band who died tragically.

Interesting eh?

Ho hum.
Jamie

PS...What about Lover lay down? eh Claire. Dave said at the Birchmere
when a heckler yelled out for Dave to play that song, "You want me to
play all the hard songs." So maybe it's just one like Halloween that
takes too much out of him. I don't know?????

i've posted this growing number several times over the course of
minarets existence...at last check the subscription base was hovering
around 150 accounts...a much more friendly number than 40,000. i feel
much the same way about phish.net sometimes but i cannot doubt that
phish.net began the whole band/internet thing....at least for me.
Phish.Net was the reason i first got hooked up to the internet, was the
reason i learned so much about this crazy world. Phish.net was just the
beginning....as i learned more i found other, sometimes more interesting,
things out there....and with that came the idea of minarets.net.

anyway...enough on phish.net...i suppose if minarets ever has 40,000
subscribers than the same will be true.

i couldn't check the exact subscription base this morning cause for some
reason or another the ilp server was down/refusing connection so.....
the best number i can give is around 150.

thought i'd post these dates again since it's been awhile and i've had a
couple of people ask me for them....

just got the flyer yesterday...and i to was impressed...does anyone else
get the feeling that this band isn't kidding around? already they
basically have two CDs out, have signed a major label, have a few
merchandise color mailer, newsletter, computer network (granted that
wasn't there doing), ect...... when i look at phish, it took them nearly
5 years to get that far.... (i'm not comparing the two bands so don't even
get the idea in your head :)

the mailer that wasn't already posted was a show at Cornell, ithaca, NY.
and the venue for the boston gig--Orpheum Theatre!! Yea Ha..i haven't
seen a show there since phish a couple of years ago....wasn't even sure
if it was still an option....good to see DMB moving on from the Paradise
ROCK CLUB...oh boy how do i hate clubs anymore...can't wait until dave is
playing mostly theatres/ballrooms and such....but then i guess i'll wish
they were playing smaller venues again....it's a never ending cycle.....

WOW!!!

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Wed Mar 16 17:05:06 1994

I'm still in shock after the unbelievable set II of last nite's show in
Madison. The band jammed and ***improvised*** like I only dreamed they could
do. Of the four previous shows I've seen and the 20 or so tapes I've heard,
I've never witnessed such a hot set as set II last nite.

I think Brian Lipman will be posting the set list, so I'll cover the
First set pretty standardR2T, but with a NICE Billies (but kept on thinking
how Boyd does tend to repeat the same notes) then a great warehouse (but
aren't they all?) and finished a short set with Help Myself, which was kickin'
as well.

Our Graves, Jimi Thing (which sort of evolved into something completely
different by the end -- also featuring a long Dave guitar solo), Minarets with
a sick Dave voice jam at the beginning, and #36 (started with a Carter/LeRoi
jam that featured LeRoi playing the theme to Sanford & Son -- the crowd went
wild here -- Michael McDonald, guitar tech and merchandise man concurred with
Jeff that he had never done this before). The set also included a nice
Nancies.

As the band was leaving the stage, they all walked past us to the dressing
room and I whispered to Dave in his strange voice "Halloween, Halloween,
Halloween. When they came back for the encore, I was sort of hoping they
wouldn't play it because Dave had a cold and wanted him to conserve his voice
for the two Chicago shows this weekend. Carter and Dave came back one and the
only hints Dave would give us for the encore was that it was a Holiday song. I
was thinking x-mas song, but sure enough, Carter started with a three-four
minute drum solo, then the rest of the band came on and ripped out Halloween.

Well, it was a great experience (and all in a tiny bar with no more than 80
people). The only downside was that the place was so small that there was no
real soundboard so no taping :(

last nite often in the last few shows. But he and Jeff were in agreement that
it was an unbelievable second set. Michael said they had been kind of stuck in
that rotation of songs recently, but that they are working on #34, which I
have never heard, but he said is really groovin'. (Our requests for Best were
ignored). Michael also has a bunch of set lists he may give me on Friday to
post to the net -- said he hasn't had time or access to a computer to keep in
touch with the net. But in April they look forward to getting a tour bus and
lap top computer.

Hey y'all

Saw Dave last nite in Madison at this tiny club. Packed it would have held

THE PLACE WAS SO SMALL WE COULDN'T TAPE! JEFF SAID IT WOULD SOUND LIKE

LeRoi and Carter stole the show.
When asked about the Phish shows Boyd said he had never seen them live but
had heard tapes of them)
We were asking for Best all night but they declined to play it. Dave said
"good chance---a lie...bastard ;----
Boyd said "oh, we haven't played that one for like 3 months but it will
probably make a comeback soon"

It was the beat Dave show I have seen up to date and the second set was
easily the best set I have heard!

kinda nuts that a band just starting out (relatively) only plays six
covers....

however...i wish they'd write more. that's one of the reasons phish
shows are so intense (putting the musical aspect aside for a
moment)...they have so much material that a live show can go
anywhere....and you could go to five shows in a row and here little
repeat (granted this seems to have changed) but with DMB sometimes i feel
like i'm hearing the same songs way
too much. then again, DMB is relatively new so i suppose more material
will come with time (with more albums too).
