covers...not quotes...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Mar 18 14:46:57 1994

i want a list of covers, not quotes. if we do quotes, we'd forseeably
have to include the beatles ENTIRE library, and my vax account simply
isn't that big.
as for sweet home alabama, i'm not including that, because it was such
a joke. dave had to be talked into that by carter, and it was nothing
more than a way of making ants a surprise to the audience. i'm looking
for complete cover tunes, and i just remembered one that only about
fifteen people outside the band and roadies have heard(including myself;)
hatfield

that was hot. soundcheck 7-14-93.

oh, and gregg....who's giving you a ride to atlanta? hmmmmmmmmm?

jeez, how could we forget 2001 jam (although phish's is admittedly
better.)
also, my opinion for the most quoted line in dave matthews short
once had me'
(norwegian wood, beatles, if you didn't know). i've heard it in
recently, typical, mianarets, and lover.
another quote is the recenlty jam that end's in "pretty, pretty
girl, lovely lovey girl, spend my world around, you got my world
turnin'" which is a stones tune, and there's been rumors that
the part of warehouse that goes "that's my blood down there" is
a line used with permission, by a band i'm not sure about.

STEFAN LESSARD ON THE BASS GUITAR, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

i'm sorry, but he's just the man. he takes no credit, which is why he
deserves so much. not only does he kick on bass, but he's also the
suavest dude on earth. he must be really determined, too. i mean, it's
not that easy to join a professional band full-time while you're still in
high school! but now he has it made. what an interesting guy! hell, if i
was a girl (or gay) i'd totally love him. sorry to take up space on your
in-box folder, but i just had to give stefan the credit he deserves - he's
a crucial part of DMB.

set lists, schuba's

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Mon Mar 21 00:47:03 1994

Got a chance to see the band twice this weekend in Chicago. Unfortunately only
saw the second set Friday nite as we got a little lost trying to find the
place after the Dead show. Anyway, Friday was fairly poor as Dave shows go. No
intense jams, except for a nice Jimi Thing. The bar also kicked them off
before 2 a.m. so no encore.
Sat nite was much better. Only one long set and they mixed up the rotation a
little, although they still won't play some of their older tunes (We were
hoping for a Best of and netter Eric Hesse wanted to hear Blue Water -- when
was the last time they played that one?) But anyway, the show was good, the
band was a lot looser than the night before, and the venu was nice. We talked
to Dave afterwards and he said he really liked the room and was going to push
for management to book Schuba's for their next Chicago visit. He thought maybe
they could play four shows in a row there next time instead of a larger venu.
(They sold out Schuba's both nites). Dave also said he was really looking
forward to playing with Phish. He said he thought those guys were really
talented and mentioned the Power Jam he did with Trey and Page -- said he
thought it sounded like shit with all those musicians up on stage at once.
Also talked about future recording plans. He said he hoped their next CD (the
first RCA one) could have about 15 tunes on it. Five or six
never-played-before songs mixed in with old favorites.
Anyway, it was nice to talk to Dave again and nice to see them in such a cozy
place. They still kinda seem like a small band when you see them with just 150
other folks, there's no pushing in front and the band members mingle with the
audience after the show :). Probably what it was like at Trax in the old days.

Onto some set lists passed on by Michael McDonald, guitar technician,
merchandise man and all-around nice guy. (He says hi to Alex)

first Schuba's 3-19-94:

SET I
Seek up, Recently, Tripping, Jane, Pay for, Nancies, Minarets, Typical, New
Song (he said Fenton told him he hadn't played this one in a while. they still
won't give it a name), Angel, One Sweet, Watchtower, Ants.
ENCORE
x-mas song, #36

some oder ones...

I
Recently, One Sweet, Satellite, Lie, Nancies, WWUS, True

Minarets, Typical, Jane, Jimi, Watchtower, Seekup

Sewanee, TN 3-5-94
I
One Sweet, Recently, Tripping, Satellite, WWUS, Angel, Pay For, True,
Minarets, Typical, Granny, Jazz... Ants

Benchwarmers, Lawrence, KA 3-7-94
I
One Sweet, Tripping, Satellite, Lie, WWUS, Nancies, True
II
Minarets-Typical, Help, Warehouse, Angel, 36, Rencently

Blind Pig, Ann Arbor, Mich. 3-17-94
I
Recently, Tripping, Jane, Satellite, Help, Jimi, Minarets, #36, WWUS, Back you
up, Ants, NWL (couln't decipher this one -- help anyone?)

He didn't have any from the Colorado shows, but that's better than nothing.
Good to meet netter Eric Hesse this weekend. See you all at Irving Plaza next
Saturday.

Being Friends, for lack of a better name, were very different from those in
the lyrics file. So I decided to print the lyrics to this particular night's
song up.
extreme cases, triple parentheses, that I struggled to get. Any corrections

so here we are
you and i together
stuck for the night
with a fire
snowing down tonight
locked us inside
against this evening
we'll be spending hours together
wondering (what is)
i will take
i will take too much time by this
I don't mean over
let's make the best
let's make the best of our time to read over this play
oh man i don't mean a mistake
oh we'll lay you (and I) this hour
and give it from the (savior)
(sail away)...yeah
tomorrow go back to being friends

oh it's just fate
that's brought us together
in this room
we can smile (((meyer tiz)))
your eyes (have got their fee)
and i am lonely
and i hope for
hope for you and me
(white man's allright)
let's be lovers
for this evening
and by daylight
go back to your man
i go back to my wife
go back to our lives
go back to our lives
(some old way) said it's ok
you (went out of your way)
all the same
for this moment
have another glass of wine
just for the time
let's leave lives (and moments away). . . yeah
tomorrow go back to being friends
go back to being friends

(((sail away on a missile
if we're this tough
and that and so away)))
ooh and i'm alive
and i want you
to be my lover tonight
while await the moments left
and god said there's a way
i'm gonna leave (((and lie a guy)))
and while man is allright
i run away . . . yeah

away . . . yeah

tonight
tonight and tomorrow

THE EMPTY'S, cd availability

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Fri Mar 25 14:12:52 1994

Hello all, I went to the BAyou last night to see The Empty's, a band
featuring Doug Derryberry (John Alagia's cohort) and other musical
hopefuls. It was quite an intense show and I highly recommend this
band to anyone who has the opportunity. ANyhow I also got to see
Michael McDonald (Dave's housemate and right hand man) and John Alagia
who also attended the show. ANyhow, Michael told me, in response to
whoever had asked this before, that the cd WILL be available at the
show tomorrow at Irving Plaza.

Whoever's going, enjoy the incredible new listening experience, (i've
heard most the cuts and they are so nice) and pass along my greetings
to John and Michael.

Life is short and sweet for certain.
yeah, yeah, yeah.

Filler Update (if anyone is actually interested)

PETERMAN@MGM.Lan.McGill.CA Fri Mar 25 15:02:14 1994

I finally found the perfect filler to put on that tape for my friend!
I used the Jimi Thing from a show I just got (thanks Ben) from
Athens, Ga in March 93.

Both of the tapes I got have these older versions of Jimi thing
unlike any I had heard before. It was very cool to listen to since the
only other Jimi Thing (by itself) that I had was very straight-
forward and didn't jam. On this new tape the song jams out at the
end, starting with some jazzy piano playing from Peter and then
solos from the rest of the band in turn. I never knew that they
actually sang Jimi Thing at the end either.

Anyway, I was very impressed. LeRoi's always great, and he pulls out
one of those great long Jimi Seek Up sax solos. Stephan's solo was
a little sloppy and you can tell how he's advanced quite a bit
in his playing. It's good also to hear Peter experiment a little
also, I always found his playing boring and repetitive (except for
Warehouse!).

The thing I miss the most is Boyd's wah-wah (or at least it
sounds like he's using one). Does he ever use it any more? It really
adds lots of intensity and a bit of a devilish quality to his playing.

Oh well, does anyone have Dave's new CD? I just bought Hoist
yesterday and was extremely dissapointed. I need to get the DMB one
to get my spirits up.

Hasta Luego,
Kwon

P.S. This is my new address until the end of the school year.

Some random thoughts

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Sun Mar 27 16:12:50 1994

well, it's been a very dmb-centric week for me as (thanks to sue and clare
emily) i have expanded my listening greatly beyond the cd and single tape of

* blue water -- what happened to this one? boyd's trippy solo is awesome.
i'd love to hear them do this again. clare said something about the long
echoed violin solo being called "baboon farm" or something. anyone have
anything to say about this?

* finally i hear halloween and know why it hurts his voice so much. and with
good reason. intense song, though. warehouse, too.

* got an acoustic tape of tim and dave and folks, dave matthews is what makes
the world turn for this band. his songwriting, reduced to its barest essence
in that format, shines. yeah, the other guys help things a lot but on his
own, dave is unreal.

days straight. and dangerous hours, too. there are so many great songs that
haven't been released on some sort of official recording yet. pay for what
you get? best of what's around? lover? 36?

i really hope they don't lose their spontaneity. the "abc jam" on one of the
floodzone tapes, the new lyrics dave makes up to "seek up" the improvving on
"jimi thing", "minarets", etc. really have to remain a part of the band. i'd
hate to see them get all serious (and shit). hopefully rca will encourage
their sense of humor and creativity and not stifle it (hoist? no, no no...
please not that...)

reid

ps - also got to see hypnotic clambake while i was in nashville (crowd was
around 30!) and they were smooth. funked-up band. they said they'll be at
penn state on the 31st if anyone's in the area. oh, and they're opening ofr
er, for widespread in cleveland sometime soon i think (sorry no more info).

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sun Mar 27 19:51:55 1994

i would assume that only audeince tapes are going to be allowed at
lexington. seems it would be a major hassle to allow more than that,
expecially in terms of getting everything straight b/w bands. i'll
ask this weekend at brown's island.

btw, if it is just audience taping, don't worry, there will be plenty
of it being done, and tapes will most certainly be available.

taping at Lexington

jeg5s@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Mon Mar 28 11:39:58 1994

...will be ONLY for those with mail-order tapers' tickets.follow

(oh...i dont know the deadline...)

Tapers' tickets for the New Years 93 shows and for some of the
Spring 94
shows were mail order. Mail order may (presumably) be used for
full shows
someday. This is the(slightly abbreviated) info for April tapers
tickets;
while you've missed the boat this time, it may be helpful to be
familiar
with the general plan.
there will be
a section of seats reserved for taping, available by mail order
only. Only
a limited number of seats will be held for this mail order.
These seats
will be directly behind the soundboard; the view from them will
be
somewhat obstructed.
who actually
need them, please don't order these tickets unless you intend to
tape. A
taper's ticket will be required in order to bring recording
equipment into
Center
(4/16), Bob Carpenter Center (4/18) and Fox Theatre (4/23).
basis, by
postmark. All orders must be postmarked between March 1 and 4 so
that we
can get them back to you in a timely manner; orders postmarked
before March
1 or after March 4 will not be filled.
order any
combination of the six shows in one envelope; however, since we
may not be
able to fill all orders completely, you must send a separate
money order
for each show; otherwise, if we are unable to provide seats for
one show
that you request, it will be necessary to return your entire
order to you
separate
show, and therefore requires a separate money order.
will not be
filled. Send your order in a #10 (legal) size envelope. Put
your return
address on the outside of the envelope, and also write on it
which shows
you are ordering tickets for, and how many tickets for each show.
order please include a 3x5 card with your name, address and
telephone
number in the upper left hand corner. Write on the card which
shows you
are ordering tickets for, and how many tickets per show. Also
enclose a
self-addressed, stamped #10 (legal size) envelope with 29 cents
postage for
1 to 4 tickets and 52 cents postage for 5 to 12 tickets.
per ticket;
Mullins Center, $20.00 per ticket; Bob Carpenter Center, $20.00
per ticket;
and Fox Theatre, $19.50 per ticket. These prices included a
$1.50 per
ticket handling charge. Payment must be in the form of a postal
money
order or an American Express money order only; no personal
checks. The
money order should be made payable to Phish. If you wish to have
your
tickets sent to you by registered mail, add $6.00 to your payment
for this
service. (You can add this fee to any one of your money orders.)
your receipt; if we cannot fill your order, we will return your
money
O. Box
219, Lexington, MA 02173. We will do our best to have all
orders
returned, filled or unfilled, by the regular ticket on-sale date
of each
show, though this may not be possible in all cases due to time
limitations.
If you haven't received your order by March 11, you may call
617.862.7669
between 10 am and 6 pm EST to check on the status of your order.

not always be
possible to provide taper ticket information in the newsletter.
However,
it will always be available on the hotline and on the Phish.Net,
so if you
want to be sure not to miss it, stay in touch with those sources.
you for your continued cooperation.

Anecdotes and Answers

EWHESSE@AMHERST.BITNET Mon Mar 28 11:57:23 1994

Hello All!
First, as Bob Lee mentioned, I was lucky enough to catch the band Saturday
in Chicago (it had been since December 11 at Williams and I had the DMBT's -
shaking all over!) so I was lovin' it. Great story to go along with it.
I knew going in that it was a 21+ show and I'm 19 sans fake, though I look
easily 23, so I was nervous all week about getting in. I arrive at Schuba's
to discover that there were no more tickets and this beast of a man they were
employing as a bouncer was screaming, "Even if you're fifty, I wanna see an ID"
so I was bummin' hard. While my party was going to fetch the car Iw ent back ins
recognized me, I told him my plight and he promised to see what he could do.
Sweet, I thought. He went in, starting talking to Michael for a couple minutes,
then Michael came out and they said that their hands were tied, they could do no
so I knew they weren't shitting. I went back outside and Dave communicated his
remorse to me through sign language. Just then, Boyd, Carter, Leroi, and Stephan
I was just bummed out I couldn't get in cuz there were no more tickets. LeRoi
expressed his sympathy and suggested my girlfriend and I walk in the side door
with them so we did just that and cAme in with the band (free). Dave saw me
enter and gave me a hug, expressing his relief. I just want to thank the band
(especially Roi, Dave, and Michael) for being true and accessible to theEric

Anecdotes and Answers, Pt.2

EWHESSE@AMHERST.BITNET Mon Mar 28 11:57:50 1994

My computer was bugging out so I'll continue that last message here. The show
was great in my opinion. Highlights for me included Dave REALLY getting into
his screams on Seek Up and Minarets, a killer Angel From Montgomery (not since
Thanksgiving at Trax for me), some nice violin addition to Jane, Leroi on
Watchtower and Pay For (I love him on this), and the encore. I was pleased to
see the relatively unitiated Chicago crowd REALLY getting into it (especially
solo Dave which is suprising). The sound and atmosphere was really nice.
Stephan was thundering like Thor and Carter blew me away yet again. I did
request a Blue Water but to no avail. Good News, though - talking to Dave
afterwards I was asking about Blue Water and he said it'll come back, not to
worry - just keep reminding them how killer some of these tunes we miss are-
Blue Water, Maker, #34 (Jeff said they've been practicing this
ne - Yes!!),
Best of What's Around. Maybe they'll reappear on the first RCA album (fingers
crossed). Anyway, I just wanted to thank the band again for playing some of
the grooviest tunes around now and for still being cool enough to help youngins
like me hear them! There were about 5 people taping but they were Deadheads,
not netters. I arranged a trade with one of them so I hope we'll have a tape
of this very nice nugget sometime soon. I'll let everyone know. One last thing,
my girlfriend and I are hoping to do a DMB New York trek three weekends from
now. That is, Cornell Sat. and St. Lawrence (free I believe) Sunday. One
problem, probably no car. Is anyone out there crazy enough to join and help us
I'll do the taping and we can arrange $. I'm afraid after the first RCA CD
that it won't be so easy or cheap to catch this killer band anymore so let's
take advantage of it now. LEt me know, thanks. I've got alot of killer tapes
for the trip too. Sorry I'm so garrulous, thanks for reading,

    1) The annoying "topics covered" thing at the top of my digests.
    2) Does anyone have the CD5 yet? How is it? Worth $7?

topic number one still puzzles me
as for topic two......i'm not sure it's worth $7 'cause i believe it cost
$8...can't remember for sure....heard parts of it but haven't had the
chance to sit down and do a complete listen....fun to have a Halloween
and Watchtower on CD (esp live versions) to throw on whenever the
desire arises....recently isn't *much* different from R2T..at least at
first listen....i'm sure others will have more in depth coverage

still a pretty cool idea in my mind to only release the CD at shows.....

is dmb coming to austin?

jrs@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu Mon Mar 28 20:24:10 1994

howdy, y'all!
y'all are talking about on this list, so i mostly just lurk. i have a friend
in c-ville who had sent me a few dmb odds'n'ends and then stood in line for
hours to get me an autographed copy of _remember two things_ last november.
on it, dave signed 'we're coming soon to austin. see you there,' but so
far that hasn't happened unless i completely missed it. they've recently
announced a may 8 phish show, but when i called in they didn't know who was
opening. does anyone know if dmb will be with them? i know absolutely
nothing about phish, so if the price is too steep i might bail on this
anyway. what are they like?

all this talk of taping has me intrigued. would anyone be willing to tape
some particularly good show for me? i'd be happy to send a tape & postage
or let someone pick from my meager list of bootlegs.

Hi!

Well everybody, I've got a major tape grovel. I'm REALLY needing
some nice sounding Widespread Panic tapes, audience or
board (though SBD preferred, of course).

As for trades, I've got about 250 hours of Dead (including about 100
hours of 1st/2nd gen boards), and another 200 hours of non-Dead (a
little bit of everything).

Please help!

a review of recently...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Mar 29 21:32:41 1994

kind of funny. when r2t came out a really bad review of it showed up
here, and everyone and his/her brother came out with the blowtorches,
and i was first in line with a fireshooter. so here i am to say that
i really am disappointed with the recently ep.
if you'd rather here it for yourself then skip the rest of this message.

let me put on my asbestos suit, and then i'll explain....

first of all, i knew the recently cut was pretty weak. i'll just leave
it at that i like recently the way it is, and editing it for radio is
to be left for the radio stations to enjoy. now, for the nitty gritty.

each of the songs on the cd is well recorded and well mastered, but the
cd is terribly incohesive. we all love dave matthews and tim reynolds
playing together, but i can now say i'll never use dm/tr to fill for
a dmb tape or vise versa. they just don't seem to flow that well.
(at least, going from acoustic warehouse to full band watchtower
doesn't work that well.) and then i got to halloween, and lo and
behold, dave's guitar has been filtered through some sort of effects
rack. enough said. COMPLETELY changes the introductory feel of the
song, and i'd have to say for the worse. it sounds almost like a
steel guitar with a little dirtying up, but not quite distorted.
at any rate, one of the most amazing things i've always gotten out
of this song is just how powerful it is, despite how dry it is musically.
overall, i'm really more likely to pop my crisp copy of feb 22 in the
old tapedeck and listen to the whole show, with an un-effected halloween
at the end. (and yes, i'll make copies for anyone who sends me blanks,
but my system is pretty poor, so you'll prolly lose at least a generation
and a half of quality.)

oh well. dave knows what he wants to do with his music. no prob. i'm
just damn glad i do have the tape. i'm prolly just going to hold on to
recently as a collector's item more than anything else. sorry to derail
anyones train...

this is the address for ordering the cd5:

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND
PO BOX 1911
CHARLOTTESVILLE VA 22903

you can order it by check or money order for $9.50 ($7 + $2.50 s&h).

i know the shipping and handling is a bit steep, but life goes on.
if you want to order it with a credit card you can do it over the
phone, but i don't know the 1-800 number right off hand. i'll post
it tomorrow, unless someone else has it handy...

but then again, i'm digestified, so if someone else has it handy,
i'll have posted it again anyway. neat.

by the way, i really dig the new phish cd, and highly recommend
it, along with their first four, to anyone lurking around these
parts...

Recently Cover

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Wed Mar 30 13:07:20 1994

We here in Lexington, Va had the Recently EP sold at Night Owl Music and
it had the B+W cover that everyone speaks of. A little tidbit for anyone
who cares.... If you can find it at your college radio station, they
might have the Radio Promo Recently disc. Its got the 3rd radio edit of
Recently (which is pretty bad), a radio edit of Ants (cutting out the 30
sec drum intro) and the album versions of Tripping Billies and Song tha
Jane Likes. The coolest part about this disc is the cover. Its the same 2
people on the new one, but they are moved around so you can see that the
guy is holding a pumpkin. Anyway.. if you run into it, it's kinda neat..

Dave on Chicago radio

jcrother Wed Mar 30 13:58:10 1994

Bob Gee orginally sent this message but for some reason or another
------
As I was driving home this morning about 11, listening to WCBR 92.7 THE BEAR,
a nice bluesy tune was just finishing and the dj gave the title, artist of the
past few songs... Mark Curry (I think) the somebody Harmon Band and "terrific
stuff from the Dave Matthews Band from their album Remember Two Things. The
track was called Recently." I didn't actually hear the song, but was shocked
to hear the dude say this. The Bear is probably the most alternative of the
non-college stations in Chicago (actually I think it's out of Arlington
Heights). They usually play stuff I've never heard before, some good some
not-so-good. So this a good place for them to start in Chicago I guess. Next
they'll be picked up on XRT and hopefully stay there (like WSP) and never make
it to Q101, the shitty alterna-pop trendy overplay the hell of songs station.
Well, just thought I'd share this rare moment.

Re: William & Mary show

I am going to be up in Williamsburg next weekend, and was wondering if
anyone had any information about the show (location, time, ticket prices
and availability to non-W&M students, etc.).

There are going to be 6 bands at the show, and all proceeds (I think all) are
Gibb Droll Band, Boy-O-Boy, BS&M (only other band I've seen from the list,
and they're very good), and Eddie From Ohio.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 10:30am. Tickets
are available to everyone. The show is at Lake Matoaka Amphitheater. The
amphitheater may be a bit difficult to find, but if you go down Jamestown
Road away from Colonial Williamsburg, after you apparently go past the
college there will be a gravel parking lot on your right, and that's where
you need to park. Just follow the crowd/look for the entrance there, it
should be evident. (It's at the 'back' of the parking lot, though). If you
see the lake on your right, you've gone too far on Jamestown Road.

Call Todd (804 221 6456) or Greg (804 220 6813) for more info and group
rates (so sayeth the poster).

The amphitheater is very nice, and a great place for DMB.. They were here
last semester and the show was incredible. Played in practically pitch
dark (I heard there wasn't enough power left for any lights other than a
couple floods right on the stage) when the night came, and it was great.
If you're coming earlier, I'd suggest bringing a picnic-type lunch/dinner if
you want, the amphitheater is almost all grassy.

dave's ideas

RPPRISIN@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Mar 31 17:20:43 1994

hey!
I was just wondering what you guys think about where dave gets his
"inspiration" for songs.......it seems to me that songs like warehouse could
have something to do with the whole trax/home stage kinda thing......maybe its
just my attempt to read too much into things but a though tit would be cool to
hear what you guys thought......

Topic No. 3
There are going to be 6 bands at the show, and all proceeds (I think all) are
Gibb Droll Band, Boy-O-Boy, BS&M (only other band I've seen from the list,
and they're very good), and Eddie From Ohio.

i've had the wonderful oppurtunity to see boy o boy. they were so good
that a night that started out being one of the shittiest nights of my
life turned out to be a really good time. they run one helluva tight
ship, much tighter than even dmb, imho. i'm not saying i like them more
than dmb, i just think they are tighter. everything is from the harrison-
burg locale, though they've relocated. i'm not sure where there basing
themselves out of now. i've never seen them, but i'm going to get the
chance this weekend, so i'll post my own observations, as will many other
people, i'm sure.

i'll admit that this is a pretty damn phenomenal setlist, but the
blatant reference to the dead really strikes me as out of place here.
i know people are bitching about it on phish.net all the time, but
phish does actually have a lot of influence coming off of the dead.
dave himself has specifically stated that he has never really paid much
attention to them, and i really think that carter has nothing in common
with them. i'm not in anyway saying that i don't want dead discussed
here, and don't want to start any of that "other band" crap that phish.net
is so known for, but drumz is the name of the grateful dead's extended
drum solo, whereas the solo before and after halloween is more a true
part of halloween, and is a completely different sounding drum solo. if
i really wanted to compare what carter does with a song by another band,
i'd call it yyz. (but i'll also make it know here that i really hate
rush, with the exception of a few songs from the early days.)

To anyone who cares

The william & mary show on April 10 includes BS&M, boy o boy, everything,
and I think some other bands. Pre-show tickets were $12, which have
stopped being sold but they are only $15 at the door. I got a frined
there to get me a ticket early, so I don't know about non-students, but I
gather it won't be a problem. See ya there.....

I'd like to think Warehouse is inspired by Dave's second home, The Flood
Zone in Richmond. Overshadowed by the every tuesday in c'ville, he drew
the same crowds every wednesday. The Flood Zone is a converted warehouse
in downtown richmond (my hometown). check it out sometime.....

Actually, I was just wondering if anyone has a nice copy of this recent (3-26)
Irving Plaza show. I'd love a DAT or master/1st gen on analog. I have alot of
very nice DMB on analog and some interesting DATs too. I send a list to those
interested, just let me know. Thanks alot. Also, I've often conceived of the
FloodZone (my DMB home) as "The Warehouse" and I find it a bit nitpicky to
expend the energy to bring the understood difference between Carter and Bill
and Mickey. I think that it was habit to use the notation of drumz and not a
willful attempt to conflate these two separate artists. I'd love to hear NY,
thanks!

Warehouse

I'm trying to think back in time..."Warehouse" was written before
Dave ever started playing shows at the Floodzone, wasn't it? I
may be wrong, but I'm just guessing...

This is the first time I've posted here--only been lurking for a
while--but I was wondering if anyone had any shows from the days
when Pete was with the band that they'd be interested in sharing.
I'd love to get a copy of my favorite DMB song--unfortunately, I
never caught the name, but they used to play it all the time when
Pete was around. For my part, I can offer a trade from a small
list of DMB recordings, blank tapes, or maybe we can arrange
something else?? I'd appreciate anyone interested getting in
touch with me! Thanks!

eddie from ohio

unlike dmb, eddie from ohio HAS been to austin recently. twice even. i
caught their most recent show and thought it was well worth my money. (ok,
so it was free.) but seriously, they're an entertaining acoustic quartet.
eddie, the namesake, is the drummer. no full-blown drum kit, he plays congas
and various and sundry other percussion items. there's a female lead singer
who really has a good voice and then 2 other guys on guitar who also do
some singing. some serious tunes and some comic relief. might want to
try and catch them at that w&m dmb show while you're there.

Does anyone know exactly where they're playing at Vandy or how I could
find out? They didn't know at the 1800 number. Help.
BTW the Oxford, Miss. show was great. I don't think that I have ever
heard them do Ants with the drum intro. I think that they did it because
the people there (Ol' Miss and Rhodes, mainly) had only heard the CD.
But, excellent performance. Have crisp trape, will trade for Phish at

Finally!

nebuious@aol.com Sun Apr 3 09:53:39 1994

Hey guys, I'm not even sure if I'm posting this to the correct address...
it's just a guess. :)

Anyway, I FINALLY got my first DMB tapes (from the 6/28/93 tree), and had
very little time to listen to it... I listened to the first set, and it
sounded good if a little misguided in some sections... the only song I really
liked was Watchtower, which isn't even by them...

Well, for the last two weeks, I was in Italy, and I just threw in set 2
hopping I'd be able to give a closer listen.

And I did.
And it was great.

I truly like them now. The composition of each tune is exceptional, and the
drummer... my GOD what is up with him?? I remeber this discussion on the
scene.

Amen to that. What an incredible, tasteful drummer. :)

Anyway, just wanted to tell you all that you have another DMB fan in your
midst (actually, I've been here the whole time).

Dave Matthews -- guitar, vocals (amazing voice!)
Carter Beauford -- percussion, vocals (jam on!)
Stefan Lessard -- bass (thump and grind, and he's 18!!)
LeRoi Moore -- woodwinds (esp saxophone!!, flute), vocals
..
The Dave Matthews Band draws from the distinct talents and styles
of its five members to create a uniquely compelling pop sound
that combines the influences of folk, jazz, rock, world beat, and
reggae. Some of it seems like a cross between Bob Dylan, Hot
Tuna, and Michael Stipe, parts are remniscent of a funky Miles
Davis, and parts sound like the Seldom Scene and Ziggy Stardust
mixed together. In an unknown show in the spring of 93, Dave
described the song "One Sweet World" as a sort of "Virginia
country funk," which is yet another way of inadequately describing
their unique sound.
...Dave Matthews, the band's namesake and formerly a Charlottes-
ville bartender, began assembling the group in 1991. A self-
taught guitarist and an inspiring poet from South Africa,
Dave Mathews has said that the goal of his music is "lifting
spirits" and this band reaches that goal.
...Carter Beauford, a past regular on BET (Black Entertainment
Television) and son of a jazz trumpet player, helps tie the band's
various elements together.
...Stefan has played upright bass in clubs since he was 15, was 16
when DMB was formed, and continues to get more powerful and controlled
every show.
...LeRoi has played with Carter and John D'Earth around Charlottesville for
years; the man can jam!!
to sing (but sounds great when he does), but man can he play that
fiddle! At three HORDE shows this summer, as well as at the Red
Rocks Amphitheatre, the crowd went NUTS each time Boyd appeared.
Boyd played as wonderfully to that crowd of some 9,000 in July as
he did on a lawn, in the rain, for ten folks sitting in grass
last May. He's cool-natured and friendly beyond belief; all he
wants is to play, and boy can he! You ain't heard Watchtower
until you've heard the DMB's arrangement with Boyd's SMOKING
solo!

they're all different yet fit together quite nicely to produce the tight
music they do. I've just returned from a three-show stretch, and having
taped them for my own master copies for the first time (with a borrowed
three-head deck) I've realized I can no longer survive life further w/o
a deck of my own for this summer. I'm asking around the nets I check
regularly for any info leading to a good deal (for a typically poorly
college student) on a probably used 3head-3motor deck. I haven't
taken the time to check the for-sale echos yet, because I'm not too

would be much appreciated as well)

i feel jealous for anyone that lives in richmond, va - that's where the

island, beautiful weather, beautiful view, beautiful women, beautiful
music! dave's set was pretty R2T, but he opened w/ two step (not heard
in a long time), and also played best of what's around i think, and my
personal favorite #36. but NO jams or improvs. too bad. great
atmosphere and place for a concert. everything opened and was pretty
good, and i don't care much for widespread, but they jammed pretty hard
nonetheless. anyone going to raleigh 4 blues traveler/DMB or phish/DMB in

brown's island..

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Apr 4 23:18:07 1994

first of all, i could brag and tell everyone that i worked this show
straight through and got to hang out back stage with cool roadies and
drink not enuff beer, but i won't, because it really, really, really
sucked in a heinous way. we were WAY overworked, but that's a completely
separate bitch session....let's just say i'm in a lot of pain right now
and i'm not doing anything to make me hurt....it just HURTS!!!!!!!!!

as far as the show goes, i was completely blown away by everything,
personally. i'm really glad that i live in harrisonburg, a place
they come to hang-out(with instruments in hand, of course) frequently.
they also got to play an extra half hour because dave band was so late
getting there.
as far as the set goes, i was not terribly impressed.
they played best, but i can think of better places for them to bring
back such a sought after song. opening with two-step was one of the
few highlights of the show. here's some of the other songs they played,
but i wasn't very close to the stage because i had to work security at
this back gate, which was pretty cool, because by 3 yesterday afternoon,
i was not in the mood to deal with living things....

(i know the first two are in the right place, and they did finish with
tripping billies, but the rest of the order is a little arbitrary, and
i may leave some stuff out.)

two step
ants
jane's song (with leroi jamming during an extended finish)
satellite
#36
best
minarets
tripping billies

did i forget anything? pretty short, eh? kinda sucks that they didn't
play seek up, recently, one sweet world(did they?), i'll back you up,
and christmas song. ;)

as for widespread, i took up a security post front and center, so i got
to see john bell's guitar playing up close and personal (this is the
rhythm guitarist, not the lead guitarist) and was utterly blown away.
(he even plays the same guitar as dave.) you couldn't hear him for
shit, but watching him gave me a new found respect for widespread, a
band i love anyway. a couple of their jams were absolutely sickening
(papa's home......). and their bongo player was so cool. he just sat
there beating on things for two hours. what a way to make a living....

wow, i just realized that it's 11:15, and i have to read for mass com,
so i'll see ya'll at lexington. i'll be working security there, too,
prolly up front and center during phish.

I'm going off memory too, but I do know that they played One Sweet World
somewhere in the middle, including the long Leroi jam intro. I agree with
Rick's review, a great show, Widespread was the best I've see them. DId
arrive late and miss everything, but I'll see 'em this weekend at W&M
along with Dave and a sshitload of other bands. Hasta.....

Hey,

was at these shows, but hadn't stolen a tape deck by then. I've got the
rest of the summer shows and other tapes from school shows that I can trade.

B's Island, CD

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Tue Apr 5 17:44:30 1994

Hey There all,

Brown's island was pretty okay, a little too R2t but oh well. BEst, 2
step...very nice. Sorry about you workers...doesn't sound like it was
a good day for the helpers. I was back by the sound board most the
time trying to avoid the wild drunken moshers up front.
Moshing--DMB...It just doesn't fit. Anyhow I got to chat w/ John
Alagia back there and my friends from the Empty's.

Personally, I'm very impressed w/ the new CD...very pleased. i keep
playing the Watchtower over and over...Stephan's bass in the beginning
is mesmerizing. Dancing Nanicies w/ Tim is excellent along w/ Dave's
moaning in his awe of the sweet music which flows from Tim's guitar.
Also I don't think the flow of the Cd is much of an object. The fact
that it is a cd lets you listen to whatever in whichever order you
like w/o the hassle of rewinding or FFing.

Good stuff.

Hey everybody,

my tape said). It's got a cool instrumental with Peter doing cool
keyboard work, and a ton of Stefan soloing. If you crank it, you can hear
dave say "Stefan's tune?" right before it. I lost my copy and don't
remember where I got it from. Thanx

long shot

btanen@husc.harvard.edu Tue Apr 5 23:30:04 1994

okay, here's a funny question . . .
does anyone have my first dave show? they opened for the sample in NYC
in april (may?) of last year. they played satellite and watchtower, but
i can remember nothing else at present. this show has sentimental value.

--ben

p.s.-- look for my buddy barry's notes on tonight's show (well, late,
cause he's coming back to atlanta from athens!)

bye for now.

I know for a fact that John Alagia was taping, so a tape does exist.
