The fate of Trax...

ddevito@nitrogen.helios.nd.edu Tue Aug 30 17:18:39 1994

Hey now,

heading, but I thought this would be a good way to get some free
publicity and fill everyone in on what's going on in Charlottesville,
home of the one and only DMB. As you can tell, my name is Dominic
DeVito, and I am a junior at Notre Dame. I have been on this list
since about February of this year. I am originally from Staunton,VA,
and I have been listening to DMB since June of 1993, which is when I
went to my first and only concert of theirs, at Trax. For the past
2 summers I have been working at a CD/tape store in Staunton called
Crossroads. My boss (the owner) is a guy named David Fisher who went
to UVa and was in Fiji there. In late July, the big boss man bought the
club we have all know and love as Trax and changed the name to Crossroads
Concert Hall. I don't know who the parties involved were, but apparently
there were 2 guys who owned Trax, and one is the manager of DMB. That
person (apparently) decided to bail so he could concentrate on making
DMB known to the rest of the country. The other person then wanted to
sell as well, so they talked to David and the rest is history. CCH
(Crossroads Concert Hall) will be open Sept. 8 with new carpeting,
paint, TVs, a new bar, and (finally) air conditioning. David told me
that he will have DMB at CCH for one last (yes, last) concert around
the time the new album comes out, which I believe is Sept. 27.
He is also planning some sort of autograph party/sale thing, too.
He told me not to worry, he will still get great bands at the club,
such as Cracker, Dinosaur Jr., Green Day, Freddy Jones Band, etc.,
but it won't be Trax anymore. So if you get some tape that reads
Sept '94, Trax, it's probably 90% correct, but not entirely.

Just thought I'd let you all know what's going on in C'ville, and
if you have any questions, corrections, additions, or constructive
criticism, feel free to send 'em along. I just regained net access
2 days ago, so this may be entirely worthless to most of you. If so,
my apologies. Take care, and enjoy the show since I can't be there.

Regards,
Dominic

PS anybody got a tape from Trax in late May or early June of 1993? I'd

Under the table and hiding from the nazi...

NebuIous@aol.com Tue Aug 30 18:42:57 1994

I was at some evil, evil mall type of satanic/nazi state, and in some type of
nazi/vomit inducing record store, I asked the lady if she had anything by
"The Da-ve M-atth-ew-s Ba-n-d", as I had happily turned my friend onto them,
and he was itchin' fer some dave (har har), to which she replied "No, but
you're the fourth person to ask me about them today."

This is weirdo. This is in the middle of NOWHERE, okay? I'm not talking
like a New Yorker, where, of course, everything else is a tiny little hamlet,
but this really wasn't anywhere. Just a random disgusting lump of metal in
the middle of fields.

I like taking others constructive time and making them read this,

Southern VA Mailing List

bmking@mail.wm.edu Tue Aug 30 19:44:30 1994

Last spring, there was talk about a souther VA mailing list, that would be
for more or less all bands, but mainly DMB/Boy O Boy/everything etc VA and
non-VA bands who would be playing in the area (Wmbrg, Richmond, CVille,
Norfolk, Hampton). I was wondering if anything became of that net, & if so,
if anyone had info on it..

tks.

Re: MINARETS digest 269

klong@nysernet.ORG Wed Aug 31 07:37:48 1994

Just a word to folks who are going to the remaining HORDE shows.
Check your local paper and with the venue if you can before you head
out to make sure that you have the accurate start time of the show.
My ticket said 3 p.m. but it seems they started the show at 2. I
got there about 2:30 and caught the last half of Dave's set. I was
very disapponted and frustrated by this since DMB and Rusted Root
were the main reasons I was going.

Luckily, he was playing on the main stage. He was plagued with some
technical difficulties early on which were getting worked out by the
time I got into my seat and settled. The portion of the set I got to
hear was excellent. Even though he is not well known at all in this
part of the country, he had made a number of new fans yesterday. He
and the band were in excellent form and smoked!

I hope that this exposure on the HORDE tour will bring them back
to a smaller venue soon.

Trax/Crossroads Corrections

jeg5s@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Wed Aug 31 13:52:58 1994

For one, I think there were 3 owners and 2 baileda; not 2 of 2.

More importantly, it don't open Sept. 8. It opens tomorrow night (Thursday)
with a reggae band. And...

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, ARU and TR3!!

Hoorah! To those who thought Trax (as we knew it) is dead, you're dead wrong.
ARU is hot, and I'm glad to see them in Cville for a 4th (5th?) time. Also,
if you haven't seen them yet, I *HIGHLY* recommend seeing TR3. I have some
old TR3 boots, and often use parts of them as filler, esp on Phish tapes. Not
sure what the current incarnation is, but the lead guitarist, Tim Reynolds
(used to be a trio; get it? Tim Reynolds 3rio = TR3), is grand! Plays with
DMB off and on, and sat in for UTTAD in the studio. Makes them strangs do all
jazz, sometimes slowing to a milky, soothing groove, othertimes building to a
monstrous wailing fury (more or less so depending on the incarnation.) I've
only seen them 20 or 30 times, and I'll be there with bells on. DON'T come
just in time for ARU; you'll miss the best band Charlottesville's ever
birthed (another band, with its own listserv mailing list, has been rained
upon with more attention, but.... hey... guess i shouldn't make that
comparison here. :)

love ya :)

Take These Big Macs...place them in a wraper

What is the BIG MAC (R) index?

(or ....an introduction to burgernomics)

The Big Mac Index was launched by the London Economist in 1986 as a
lighthearted guide to whether currencies are at their correct level.

Burgernomics is based upon the theory of purchasing power parity (PPP) - the
notion that a dollar should buy the same amount in all countries.

Our "basket" is a McDonald's Big Mac sandwich, which is produced locally in
the countries listed below. The price listed shows the price of a Big Mac
sandwich in dollar terms.

The least expensive price is in China, where a Big Mac costs a bargain $1.03.
figures suggest that the yuan is the most undervalued currency, the Swiss
franc the most overvalued.

This show is, indeed, from the Bayou in D.C. The tapes you have
probably followed from the tree, the first on this net (though not
the first completed :(
The tapes were sndbrds offered up by the band.
Filler on set I is from 12-9-92.
Filler on set II is 10-5-93.
If anyone wants them and still doesn't have them, I have
the SBD analog master the band's management gave me to run the
tree with.
I'll be happy to spin copies for anyone who sends blanks (both
100 min!!!) and postage ($1.67 cheap; $2.90 priority) to me.

Crossroads CH Update

jeg5s@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Thu Sep 1 22:36:34 1994

Well, I've been in twice now; the place looks _great_! The
bathrooms alone will wow you. New carpet. The two brick walls
separting the two areas to the side have been removed. The raised
platform that was behind the soundboard has been cut 80% in
length, leaving _much_ more dancing room in the hall. And, most
importantly, they have AC!! The bar arrangements are new, as
well, and I was told that there will be new tables and chairs.
Work is still proceedign as we speak (I was wrong about a
Thursday reggae show; thats next week), and it's all looking
grand to be done by the time TR3 hits the stage, in about 23
hours!

To note, there will be a DMB listening party, Monday, September
26, at Crossroads Concert Hall (804-295-8729) to "debut" UTTAD. I
t is unclear whether or not there will be a DMB show on Tuesday
the 27th, as was previously suggested in minarets.net; if there
is substantial interest, esp by those who would travel, I suggest
snail mail to Crossroads (or to the band; check R2T for address.)
Don't be harrassing; they're way busy enough. However, mild
encouragement from many pholks at once can have important
consequences in some events under some circumstances. :)

9/1/94 Dave @ HORDE

NebuIous@aol.com Fri Sep 2 15:06:05 1994

Hey fellow humans, notes...

DMB @ Jones Beach 9/1/94

Satellite
Rhyme & Reason
Ants Marching
Help Myself
Lie In Our Graves
Tripping Billies

Fun 'set' despite the general sameness of it. Help Myself was a nice
'surprise'. in the middle of Rhyme we noticed that a few people had gone to
the front of the stage, so we went up, from our seats about 30 rows back, and
the relatively nice security guard let us go on through, so we were dancing
in the front row, literally 5 feet from the band which was fun.

Dave broke his G string at the very beginning of Billies, and played the
guitar the whole time, which lead to some strange faces as dave tried to
figure out new ways to play some parts.

Everyone else was pretty good, but another great DMB related highlight was a
little jam on this super small stage while the screamin cheetah wheeles or
something were playing. anyway, it started with the drummer and percussion
player from the allmans along with boyd and steffan. this soon grew to
leroi, arnie lawrence, and john popper all jamming straight on one groove for
about half an hour.

"So long suckers!"

Upcoming New York Show

NebuIous@aol.com Fri Sep 2 16:07:25 1994

There's another Dave show in NYC!

Yippee, here are some specifics...

Roseland (239 West 52nd Street bet. 8th & B'way)

September 30th
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from those ticketpeople as well as at
the Irving Plaza box office...

I don't know when the show is, but I'd imagine it says on the ticket and will
say it sometime soon on the hotline.

If any of you need more info on how to actually GET to Roseland if you don'
tknow the city well, I can give you some info.

I'm kinda surprised their playing Roseland... it is a club of much size.
there AFTER they got super popular. Living Colour played there. These
aren't huge acts, but at least for now in a different league of popularity
and name recognition. It should be cool.

DMB show in providence

@uvmvm.uvm.edu:MFOR8178@URIACC.URI.EDU Fri Sep 2 19:14:58 1994

I just got the new Phoniex, and DMB is playing at Lupo's, on October 9.
From Good Homes are opening.
FGH are an excellent band from New Jersey, very folky, I believe they have
opened up shows at Trax and the Flood Zone for Dave.
Lupo's is part of the Met Cafe, which us DMB fanatics overwhelmed last time.
While the Met holds about 150 people legally(There were over 250 there)
Lupos holds close to 5 or 600. Pretty big place. Max Creek plays every weekend.
Rich Lupo owns both places, and you can enter the met from Lupo's.
Hope to see you all there.
Oh BTW, anyone know if Dave gives out press passes?
Later,
Mike

to tell or not to tell

NebuIous@aol.com Sat Sep 3 20:08:33 1994

I have a bit of a dilema here.

There is a board on AOL dedicated to DMB, and there are a good number of
people who read it (at least 8 or 10 post).

So the thing is, do I tell them about minarets? On one hand, we'd get a few
new people, but on the other, probably an influx in people who really don't
know anything begging for tapes and talking about 'this cool CD i heard about
called Recently and stuff'... so it's your call. Personally, I kind of like
the vibe in here right now ('this is a vibe alright, you can eat this one
with chopsticks!').

bkingswe@nyx10.cs.du.edu Sat Sep 3 21:00:59 1994

Well, once the album comes out (sept 27, right?), and the first couple of
singles make their way through the college charts (and maybe more),
there's going to be a BIG rush on the net I think. This is of course
presuming our boys do hit it off. But somehow, whether or not any of us
do or don't want it to happen, I think most of the people on this net
believe that it will happen. Ok.. if that wasn't convuluded enough.

All I meant to say was that most of us probably think they'll make it big,
and when that happens, minarets will get crowded.

there.

Gotta remember to keep these things simple, brett.. :)

So, either see it as a practice run :), or wait till they find out about
us along with everyone else. :)

take care,

New Album News (?)

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Sun Sep 4 13:47:01 1994

I thought I'd share some more news I got recently at Jones Beach- If what
I'm telling you all is already common knowledge, could someone please
kindly inform me. Thanks.
him a few more questions about the album. The following is what I can
Ants Marching
Satellite
Best of What's Around
Pay for What You Get
Jimi Thing
Song #34
Rhyme and Reason
Help Myself
What Would You Say

And 3 more tunes that I can't remember right now, but if you ask about a
song it might come back to me. There's nothing "new," that is, all the
songs he mentioned were very familiar. He told me they tried to spread
out the selections evenly over the brief history of DMB.
some otehr stuff that might be interesting to know, however. First, he
assured me that the new record contract would not affect the band's
current taping policy. I also asked him if he knew about this net group.
He smiled somewhat modestly and nodded, and then discussed the
possibility of floating a few unreleased songs on the net to those of us
with CD- ROM access (I'm no computer expert, so dont ask me). Finally, he
told me that at fall shows the band would return to the two set format
whenever possible (I was worried after the Hammerjacks show in Balt.).
just returned to the net last week, and have no idea what you all know or
don't know. Let me know where you all stand.

as far as the lyrics file goes, i'm working on getting it all tied
together. don't have much time for these things this semester, but
i'm making a few corrections, and i've added rhyme or reason, a version
of #36 and drive in drive out, and i'm still hoping to get a good
two step before too long. the problem with two step, though, is that
he only sings 3 different verses during the song (repeating as he feels
necessary) but has 4 or 5 different verses written for it, and i'm
trying to figure out how to interpret it. hmmmmmmm. (not to mention
the fact that i or somebody else actually needs to sit down and work
it out.....have you done that clare? i forget)

Re: New Album News / an old post of mine . . .

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Sun Sep 4 20:14:30 1994

topic #1

I talked to Dave again at the Jones Beach HORDE show, and asked
him a few more questions about the album. The following is what I can
Ants Marching
Satellite
Best of What's Around
Pay for What You Get
Jimi Thing
Song #34
Rhyme and Reason
Help Myself
What Would You Say

And 3 more tunes that I can't remember right now, but if you ask about a
song it might come back to me. There's nothing "new," that is, all the
songs he mentioned were very familiar. He told me they tried to spread
out the selections evenly over the brief history of DMB.

Well, let me add, just for the sake of completion, the following three
tunes which will likely appear (or definitely, as the case may be) on
_Under The Table And Dreaming_:

Say Goodbye (they worked it into a full-band version, right?)
Warehouse (trust me)
Dancing Nancies (trust me again)

                                -Adam

Incidentally, I STILL can't believe #34 and Best of What's Around are going
to be on an album. Ah, ain't life grand?

-----------------

topic #2
(this is a post of mine from 8/31 which I don't think ever got to the net):

Hi everyone.

I went to the HORDE at Jones Beach today. Dave and the guys played for only
about a half-hour (maybe a little more). A rather uninspiring set in my
opinion-- they were just getting going when they finished with a stock
version of Ants Marching.

Anyway, after the set was over, it began to get interesting.

brought them today to show the guys. ARU got a kick out of the ones I took
of them that day when I saw THEM last week, so I figured why not! I got to
Boyd first and he flipped through them quickly, complained about how bad he
looked, signed one, took two others, and he was off.

Later I got Carter's attention and we wound up talking for a while. He signed
a picture for me and then he asked me to sign one of the one's I took for
him. While we were just shooting the bull, he told me one particularly

They'll be a doing a sort of 'fall tour' after the album comes out. Tim
Reynolds WILL be joining the band for this entire tour! I specifically asked
about Boston and Carter said in early November they'd be up that way. Cool.

It should be really interesting how the band develops over the course of this
tour with another player night-in and night-out.

Not much else to report. In my opinion, the HORDE tour is a mere shadow of
the extravaganza it was two years ago. That's life.

Bye for now,
Ben

That's all.

'pass auf!'

that's german, i am such a scholar...
(ps- it helps having lived there for many years [wink])

okay...
here's my point.
34?
nope.
so my venture is to say 36 has a better chance on the album than 34.
but i'll call again, on the honorable rick to give clarification on the little
discussion that pursued on this topic... oh... say month ago, maybe?
(you remember this one, don't you bss?)

say goodbye?
nope.
not on the album, although it has been worked into a beautiful bongo sounding
full band wonder. but nix on it being on the album.

pay4: mmmmmm.... maybe. (remember, i made this guess back in may) if it's on

blake is here shouting in the background about #34. he adamantly wants me to
make his point clear. he say's 'bullshit'.

buford... what's with the frequency of your inebriated posts?
okay.. i've rambled enough....

info on thw album

WOTTONGM@ctrvax.Vanderbilt.Edu Mon Sep 5 14:15:34 1994

Through a friend that works at RCA, I have heard a promotional
of the new album. The songs on the promo are wwys, warehouse,
jimi thing, R&R, best of..., and dancin nanacies. it sounds
really good, althogh it takes a little getting used to. There seems
to be a synthesizer track on wwys and on warehouse. John Popper
makes an appearance on wwys. Tim can be heard on warehouse. R&R
is the best in my opinion. I think that everyone will like it.
I think that I may be getting the entire CD in a few days. I'll let yall
know the rest of the songs. Gordon

This isn't important, it's scary

NebuIous@aol.com Mon Sep 5 14:16:14 1994

So there I am.

15th street & Union square... The Wiz. My friend over somewhere probably
deciding between aerosmith, ace of base, or some other friendly little mtv
band, and i'm scanning new CDs for no reason. So, somewhere between The
Division Bell and Voodoo Lounge, my heart stops.

It's sitting right there.
Tons of them.
They're crawling with yellow SALE $11.99 stickers.
Remember Two Things, in all its Bama Raga Glory.

Now, the only explanation I can think of is that the Wiz sponsors shows at
Irving Plaza, and Irving Plaza is about 300 feet away from this particular
Wiz, but I still can't believe I saw it. This place doesn't have Lawn Boy
(by Phish), but they have R2T!

Giants Stadium, here I come...

#34, #36, what's the difference

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Sep 5 16:23:15 1994

no clare. your WRONG! ;)

i would sooner believe that #34 will be the one, because it's such
a beautiful song that has no exposure. i think that's why he wants
to put it on the cd, as well as the fact that it's a much more solid
song than #36. it has a more defineable form as well as set lyrics,
whereas #36 is just a free-for-all jam with made up lyrics, not to
mention that it gets repetitive. repetitive can be cool at a live
show when your watching how much fun the band and the audience are
having, but it doesn't work to well on disc.
#34 was (is) a song that doesn't grab the audience right away, it
just kind of grows on you, so it never really got a tremendous
reception when he wrote it. it was after a few tapes got circulating
and people could really listen to the song that they really started
to like it. more or less, he's specifically saved this one (as
well as rhyme and reason, imho) for the cd, so he could get the
song out to people so they can hear it.

ps- for all you people who have asked for the lyrics file in the
past two weeks, i'm just about ready to send a copy to everyone who's
signed up for the mailing list over the past year, and then you'll
have a full set of dmb lyrics (sans two step, currently. i think
someone sent two step to me, but i lost it. (don't ask me how i lost

Re: #34, #36, what's the difference

bkingswe@nyx10.cs.du.edu Mon Sep 5 16:55:47 1994

I thought #36, altough the lyrics are pretty random and not developed,
was about Cris Harmony, a civil rights activist in South Africa who was
killed. The story I heard (don't remember how, though) was they they
heard this during a sound test before a show and 'wrote' the song then.
Or maybe it was just dedicated to him.

Anyone know the real story?

Also, Say Goodbye. Wasn't the name (assumed to be) Quick lay and
Goodbye, then I thought it was heard officially that it was Just For
Tonight, but now everyone's calling it Say Goodbye. Did I miss something
over the summer? :)

thanks.

thanks, rick... i love you dearly, too...
maybe you're right, maybe you're not.. but i agree with hatever it was you
said... cause it was mostly right.

#36... actually.. we already discussed this earlier on 'summer-net' but i'll
give a mild re-hash...

say goodbye...
officially is called....
say goodbye.
straight from the horses mouth...
and still, (personally) i say no to it being on the album. although they've
coordinated it into an awesome song (even as great as it is solo), it's still
not got difinitive lyrics in the way, say, r&r has taken on in all the shows
i've seen since the band started playing again this summer.
ALL ARE WELCOMED TO DISAGREE IF SO FELT!!!

but i'll still love you all anyway... i just might curse you and stuff......
keep on rockin in the free world...

Anyone know the real story?
actually, that story is right on the money, though his last name is
hani, as clare mentioned. the thing is when one writes a song about
a deceased individual who means a lot to you, regardless of whether
you acutally know the person (and i think consensus has it that dave
knew chris hani the way we might know bill clinton), it will have a lot
of emotion (i would think). as any songwriter can attest, deeply emotional
songs are somewhat easy to vary lyrics on, because one has so much to
say (hey, there's a lost classic;), so i doubt we'll ever see anything
more than a groove, there.

Also, Say Goodbye. Wasn't the name (assumed to be) Quick lay and
Goodbye, then I thought it was heard officially that it was Just For
Tonight, but now everyone's calling it Say Goodbye. Did I miss something
over the summer? :)
(humperdink is marriing the prinzess in leetle less than hav an hhour...)
actually, it was originally introduced as quick lay and goodbye 'cuz
dave couldn't think of a name for it. he even entreated his first
audience (which would be in lexington, i believe) to come up with one
for him.
it was on the net the people started suggesting all sorts of crazy things,
but the favored (aside from quick lay and goodbye) was just for tonight.
i don't know if say goodbye started here, or just found it's way here.
some people were calling it that before dave actually introduced it as
that, though.

actually, that's prolly more of an explanation than a summation. oh well...

just some useless info

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Tue Sep 6 15:25:50 1994

Hey Minernetters!

The other night I went to see Derryberry & Alagia play at the Grog
&Tankard on Wisc. Ave here in DC. And thought I'd let y'all know that
they're still doing some great covers of DMB tunes. They played w/ a
band called Vertical Horizon (a popular Gtown band and also a
contributor the the latest AWARE cd). At the end of the night they
all got up on stage together and jammed to Best of What's around...it
was great. all four musicians alternated singing out the verses.

I'd highly recommend both these bands if ya get the chance. It's
funny cuz they were talking about Dave all night. At one point doug
Derryberry jokingly said, "we refuse to do any more Dave Matthews
songs until Dave Matthews starts to do some covers of our songs."
Then they went on to play "Satellite."

Oh well, dat's it.

I've been looking over my own personal list of songs I expected to see on
UTTAD, and the only one I haven't seen any mention of is . . .

What happened here? Is this song not worthy?

Also, does anyone remember talk back in January about Dave going up to
write some songs with John Alagia? Did that fall apart when Dave was
called away by events surrounding his sister's death? Frankly, we've only
gotten one new song in the past year.

Bye for now,

pondering say goodbye

chobbs@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Sep 6 17:32:18 1994

I've been real quiet on the net for the past few months, but all of the
sudden i have an urge to toss out some musings. (what im getting at is I
am actually posting but i dont have the slightest clue if im doing it
right..excuse me if i screw up please)

yesterday i was cathcing up with some of my buddies and listenin to some
dave tape (dont ask me which..youll soon understand im clueless) and
dave's deep mumbley, rumbley, voice cuts through our conversation, "
this song's about a quicklay and goodbye." Which got us talkin'. Some
people thought saying that and calling it 'say goodbye" kind of ruined
the song. He sings it with such passion and heartfelt emotion that we'd
all gotten sucked into the song's story. Before the name "say goodbye"
it was so easy to imagine that the 2 lovers were freinds that had always
been in love and that night was the one night when the 2 finally got to
share each other. Ya know? Like, the would have always been lovers only
somthing wasn't right with the situation..timing or something trivial.
But, calling it "say goodbye and throwing out a comment like "quick lay"
ruined the idea that there was some sincere loving passion between the
two. so why the passion in his voice when he sings..especially towards
the end? i cant conclude anything.. and i know im not supposed to. I
guess that's why i like caliing it "say goodbye"--- IT MAKES YOU THINK.
there is still room for persanal interpretaions of the lyrics and the
meanings can change for dave and for all of us listeners too. it lets
you imagine and play with a little paradox.

well thats whats on my mind ..now yall can ever so kindly point out my
mistakes.

casual grins and some yawns..hope i didnt waste too much of your time!

New Haven and song #34

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Tue Sep 6 19:10:10 1994

I have two different things to discuss, so I'll go one at a time, and you
can skip ahead if one bores you.

First- I went to buy my tickets for DMBs New Haven show at Toad's Place.
The price- $7.50. VERY reasonable. The club is also within a thirty
second walk (literally), so if anyone-
a. Wants me to get them a ticket to this show (it's half the price of the
NYC show, not to mention parking, food and drink savings)
b. Needs directions to the theater
c. Needs a place to stay
d. wants to get together for dinner, drinks, other substances, whatever,
before the show
e. Wants to know good places to eat, hang out, etc. in New Haven, or
f. Wants to arrange a tape trade to be carried out at the show (thus
saving on postage and hassle),
let me know and I'll be more than happy to discuss matters with you. The
only one I'm not sure about is (c), but it shouldn't be a problem.
Now for a question- Does anyone know how I might rent or borrow a
portable DAT or hi quality portable analog machine? It seems that DMB and
God Street Wine are playing here on consecutive nights- a taper's dream,
but I don't have any decent recording equipment. I was thinking of
calling Terrapin Tapes and seeing what they can do for me, since they are
located only 40 minutes or so from here. Any input would be greatly
appreciated (I don't want to buy a machine and then return it after the
shows.)

Now for the second matter. I posted a few days ago that Dave told me song
- Dave confused the two songs
- Dave was lying
- The drugs are beginning to wear on my memory, or
- Song #34 IS on the album.
Any of these are possibilities, but only the last one seems really
likely. If I'm wrong, so be it. Another enjoyable DMB tune will be there
in it's place. If I'm right, one or two folks out there owe me an apology.
I must say, however, the general mood in this group is a friendly one.
Nice to see after visiting the phishnet.

well, i just sent out the final lyrics file. if you didn't get it,

who bounced because he/she doesn't exist.
and
shanker@pop.cis.yale.edu
who bounced because his mailbox is full. (that's actually a new one

i just sent it out about 15 minutes ago, so i may not have all the
bounced copies, yet. if i get any more, i'll post and we can track
everyone down.

once again, the mailing list is no more, because the file is chock
full of songs. the only songs are heathcliff's haiku warriors
(personal name for a song with no name), two step, and #34, the
last two i think were sent to me, but became victims of one of
my occasional mail purges. when those are sent to me, if it's not
via the net, i'll post them, and then you'll have everything.

(yippee!!)

also, for those that want an electronic copy but don't have one,
i do keep the lyrics to r2t filed in my account, so let me know
if you want those, too.

Brian and all- The amphitheater is on the grounds of the university of
virginia. If you come in off of University Ave, and drive down the
throughway through campus, passing the library and the admissions office
on your right, and the LAwn and the Range on your left, right before you
go through the bus gates, you will see the amphitheater on your right set
below the sidewalk--- any how, just go to the grounds and ask someone- I
heard they will be playing there!

Chords File Update

NebuIous@aol.com Wed Sep 7 14:51:52 1994

Hey everyone, it appears many of you are drifting back to school and
minarets, so I might as well give a Chords File Update.

Shawn has handed the file over to me. So. If anyone out there would like to
be on the distribution list or would like to TRANSCRIBE a song or two... just
send me some mail.

Right now the song list is as follows (I have taken Shelly's word for what is
and isn't on UTTAD)

R2T = Remember Two Things (Bama Raga Records)
UTTAD = Under The Table And Dreaming (RCA Recods)
u     = Unreleased

Most of UTTAD is transcribed, but certainly not all of it (no Lover, no
Rhyme, no Nancies, and only the intro of Satellite).

Oops, now I'm in a hurry.

Later everyone.

Adam, Ben, what's the difference?

Incidentally, I STILL can't believe #34 and Best of What's Around are going
to be on an album. Ah, ain't life grand?
                     ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Hi, I wrote that a few days ago but since it was interspersed with Adam's
wise comments Rick (or was that Gregg, or someone else from JMU?) confused
us.

Just to complain for a minute, Tower Records didn't have Ain't Life Grand
today, and neither did the Wiz. Plenty of R2T though.

hello and 1/27/94 question

LauraL4523@aol.com Wed Sep 7 17:23:35 1994

Hey there y'all!
ticket for DMB at the Ritz, and I'm very psyched, cos I've never caught them
live, just keep spinning my couple of tapes again and again.
and other "special guests" that was right after Dave flew back from S africa
after his sister's death. Was this some benefit concert, or was it for his
sister's memory, or what? I've been curious.

I also want to mention that the address for this list has been posted on the
Phishnet and the dead net more than once, so if people were going to flood
the place, I think they would have done it to some extent by now. I hope
they don't too much. This is quite a friendly place. :)

Take it easy,

Re: MINARETS digest 277

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Sep 7 17:33:38 1994

when i went to see dave at trax on nov 9, he played this peice of
music twice, both times acoustically. the first time was with his
acoustic opener set, the second time just moments before the band
joined him for an encore. all i can say is that it was not the
same song both times. yes, it was the exact same peice of music
that we all know and love as say goodbye (or quick lay and goodbye),
but the first time was a very dark, sinister, and downright evil
tale of a cheap hook-up. the second time was the more soothing
freindship based version that has become the song known as say
goodbye. personally, i like it the way it is now, but i also know
people who prefer the more sexist version as being more dark and
really provoking emotion the rhyme and reason does.

of things in a single post.

is simple. it sucked on r2t. yes, that is subjective, but it's
subject to a lot of agreement. it wasn't as powerful as dave fans
know it can be, and that really, DULL, thing that carter did had
a great way of annoying people who've never heard the band before.
as for satellite, well, i'm one of the few and far b/w people who
was annoyed by the song when i first heard it, so it doesn't matter
to me anyway. your guess is as good as mine.

your mail bounced. if anyone knows him or his correct address,
either send it to me, or send him a copy of the lyrics file.

More on Say Goodbye

dee3s@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Wed Sep 7 17:44:38 1994

When asked after his 1994 WTJU Folk Marathon appearance what the name of the
song was, Dave replied that it was Say Goodbye. When questioned as to why it
wasn't called Quick Lay & Goodbye, a much cooler name, Dave responded that
since the song was about a good friend of his, that name wouldn't really be
appropriate.

Is that about right, Chris?

future condition of the net

msweeney@rucs2.sunlab.cs.runet.edu Wed Sep 7 18:30:03 1994

hello people
keep seeing these posts about the net being flooded and getting hostile.
I don't think minarets has anything to worry about. Look at some of
the other nets that are getting somewhat known. finewine, blues
traveler net, horde net. not bad places. haven't seen any problems on
any of them except when someone attacks a member of BT then the people
on the blues traveler net get defensive but that's just loyalty. I
think what it has to do with is the fans. Now i haven't been on
minarets for to long acctually i've only been on a matter of weeks. but
i've heard from other people and seen my self that this is a cool net.
one of the problems with the phishnet is that the fans are hostile to a
point (not talking about all of them i subscribe my self). you have
those who have been with the band since the begining and don't like new
comers because it means they can't just go to a club pay a cover charge
and walk in to see phish. so i think if you just keep the real nice
vibe you have here and just remain nice then you'll keep it real cool
here. and think of it this way with new people comes new tapes :).
and to those who are worrying about subscribe me posts well finewine has
very few if any of them. the BT net only had a problem with it when the
newsletter gave the wrong address (and dabe set up some kind of filter
to knock alot of those out). not to mention i've never seen the address
for the net with out the subscribe address as well. so just keep
everything as groovy as it currently is and i think this could be a
blessing in disguise. sorry about the length of this post i felt i had
to express my views bye bye

I'm a newbie!! Help me!

SAKUNZ@MIAVX1.BITNET Wed Sep 7 20:59:45 1994

Hey now,
been around Phishnet and Deadnet a bit over the last year, so I'm not
completely clueless. It seems pretty cool so far. My main point of this
message is a GROVEL. Yes the G-word. I have absolutely 0 hours of DMB,
,although I do have over 250 hours of Dead, Phish, Widespread, and the Samples.
If there are any kind sould out there (I know there are), I'd appreciate some
help in getting started. My roommates and I are really interested in scoring
some tapes. Also, any chance of a trip to the Midwest during the post-album
release tour??? A show in Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana/Illinois/Michigan would be
quite cool. Later, later, later, and thanks for listening.

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Wed Sep 7 22:00:32 1994

I must venture a chance to agree on two counts. The Ants on R2T
sucks. What happened to just the no-intro Ants, or the Ants that
was spurred by the 2001 theme??? Or the Ants that was bred out
of Gooey Thing??? These annoy me, and I really, REALLY hope that
this Ants is much better. Secondly, to those of you who were
able to catch Satellite when Peter was with the band can remember
the power and drive it had, not to mention the fact that it was
just plain FAST! The Satellites they've been doing are about 1/2
the speed of those that I have on tape from when Peter was with
them...not to mention it was much more fun to experience on
stage.

Oh well...we can always hope, and for those of us who are stuck
in the past, well, we can listen to our tapes with Cry Freedom,
Spotlight, People People, So Much To Say and Eyes of the Maker,
and reminisce in the days when the highest amount of people at
Trax on a Tuesday to see Dave were maybe 75, and we could sit on
the floor if we wanted to...

Seeing as that I didn't start classes until today, I had the pleasure of
going down to Hollins tuesday night to hang out at their infamous
apartment parties. I was standing in this one girls apartment, when in
walks carter with his girlfriend, who lived their. Turns out they are on
vacation for a few weeks. I chatted breifly with him on unimpartant
topics like his cool drums on say goodbye and an unplugged show they didi
in late 92, then he had to use the bathroom and I never saw him again.
He wasn't getting horded by people when I saw him, but I hear he was
signing socks and beercans at another apartment, Oh well......
till next time..

New disc w/ REM?

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Thu Sep 8 12:17:54 1994

Hello, greetings and salivations!

1) It's great to be back to hear from fellow followers of the great quintet.

2) I can't wait for the album!

3) I heard a possibly nasty rumor [if it's false] that REM's "Monster" is
coming out on the same date as the new DMB disc. If that's the case, or even
if it's not, is there the possibility of a "Midnight Madness" sale on that
Tuesday?

sol.id, but also some off of _Labrador_ and it all rocked! I tried to get a
tape of the show, but a) even though I live in W-S while not a student, I'll
admit Ziggys' board is fairly old and getting slowly obsolete, and b) I made
the mistake of not getting my tapedeck to record the show. I did talk to the
guys before and after and they enjoyed it and said that PiKA at Davidson was
in their fall plans. Any fans out there who haven't heard "everything"
should not pass go, collect about $14 bucks and go buy Labrador, or get more
money and get sol.id too! If anyone wants to ride down for the possible show
I have sadly but one poor quality show here in 93 and I'm still looking for
my Samples boot from the board here.email me!

5)Lastly, I have only been back for a short time, but DMB is still a rockin'
groovy cool place to netsurf and communicate. Let's keep it that way. I
think any administrator's worst nightmare is seeing a flamewar develop and
understand DMB in a positive friendly environment. Hopefully, we'll keep it
that way.

Hope ya'll had great summers and I look forward to reading and posting on the
best run mailing list (except Rush's The National Midnight Star, but it has a
huge budget for over 3000 subscribers) for the coming years. Peace!- WF

I've been looking over my own personal list of songs I expected to see on
UTTAD, and the only one I haven't seen any mention of is . . .
                         Typical Situation
What happened here? Is this song not worthy?

typical situation is on the album....

Also, does anyone remember talk back in January about Dave going up to
write some songs with John Alagia? Did that fall apart when Dave was
called away by events surrounding his sister's death? Frankly, we've only
gotten one new song in the past year.

this is a big gripe i have with the dave matthews band...where are the new
songs??? i remember Boyd saying more than six months ago that he was
working on a new one, but......?

things are going well, let's keep them rolling.....

UVA Amphitheater

jeg5s@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Thu Sep 8 12:38:32 1994

To note, Kristin very well identifies where the amphitheater IS, but those
aren't the best directions for parking, esp. since Central Grounds is closed
to thru-traffic during the day (perhaps til 5:30; sometimes varies.) Also,
there is NO PARKING in Central Grounds, besides the fact that if DMB plays
that Amphitheater there will also be NO WALKING space anywhere nearby.

The amphitheater is very open. You should be able to stand at the upper
levels or just outside and have a great view, not to mention better sound,
and not have to pay to go down into the thing. Actually, the bigger events at
this amphitheater often overflow to the point that you cant get inside
anyway. I HIGHLY recommend coming early.

UVA (eg not up the ramps into central grounds), to JPA, and park in the lot
across from the C-shaped Old Cabell Hall. From here, it is a 2 minute walk
(across the street and up the hill). You may get ticketed (towing unlikely;
never seen it) if you park there before 5 (actually, i think the guy checks
no later than 330), but youre also allowed one ticket per car per year in
Cville.

ellis

P.S. I agree with Shelly RE repeats. I don't get it. Starting to remind me of
the Spin Docs and their repetitious release of the same songs, live from
different places. Argh. So much more material. People'll find the great early
stuff once they catch on, and they're less likely to buy both if they've
already got a chunk of the material (aren't they?)

Re: Under the Table...

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Thu Sep 8 14:58:20 1994

This is just a notice for those of you who have yet to get the
Recently cd...PLAN 9 records, here in Ch'ville, is selling all of
the copies they have to get rid of them. Evidently, due to a
conflict with RCA records, production and sale of the Recently cd
must be halted on FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9. For those of you who have
yet to get your copies of it, you have one day. I dno't know if
it will still be available over mail order or at shows, but my
assumption would be that it is NOT. Record companies have ways
of fucking with bands like that.

I do remember talking to Dave about Recently the night they
recorded Watchtower and Halloween for it (after the show) and he
said that they -might- be able to put out an ep with some stuff
on it, if RCA would let them, and well, they did. But as
recordcompanies can do, since Recently came out as an indie ep,
after DMB had signed, RCA holds the rights to have it pulled off
the market. However, who's to say that it might never be
re-released after UTTAD comes out, and then as an RCA release,
not Bama Rags.

So the main points--
1) If you haven't gotten Recently yet, get it.
2) If you have gotten it, get another, cuz it might be worth some
money one day, if DMB is around for like 15 years. You all know
how much old Aerosmith and Zep bootlegs are worth these days, I
mean the ones on album, not like Dead tapes.

Just thought you all would like to know,

nights at record (cd) stores in h-burg, lexington, c-ville and richmond,

one cool thing about that, though, is that every damn city in the nation

recommend getting to such places early, 'cuz we're going to have to

Phish.net-Dave??? Granny thoughts..

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Fri Sep 9 01:56:55 1994

Well,
but o'course I know Rick, and his shovelhead couldln't mean to much harm...
Clare's always peaceful presence could divert huge breakouts of anoimosity...

speaking of Granny...I had heard back in late 92 ish- early 93 even before I
had
comphrended a dave cd, that Granny was the first single, and when I saw
them at Zollmans in 1993 I swore I was told I had heard a studio mix of
it reverberating from the now long gone Ford Red Van "tourbus" with the
uhaulit on back. Maybe I was an overanxious dave-head, but this is what I
remeber, I do like the song (sorry rick) and have enjoyed its growth from
11-17-92 (david you're a nunu --- for those who own this tape) to the
crowd pleasing love-baby version... who knows.. if dave put every song
I've ever heard him do live on a disc the five disc box set would be out
now...

Richmond pholx/random dave quotes

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Fri Sep 9 02:11:35 1994

"Hope everyone is having an enjoyable evening on the town,
down in the Flood Zone....
Down in Shokoe's bottom
Who is Shokoe anyway?
And how did they conclude that this was his bottom..
Or hers actually, I'm not sure
If Shokoe is a boy or a girl....
hey hey hey (into minarets)"

Dave Flood Zone 12/2/92

After multiple ramdom Dave statements like this, maybe a Dave quote file???
I know I got plenty of 'em....

P.S. Clare this is the tape I'm sending you

Re: Under the Table...

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Fri Sep 9 10:24:17 1994

Actually, this is not about UTTAD. There was a post made by
somebody on here, who mentioned that this net was second only
{to RUSH'S NATIONAL MIDNIGHT STAR. What I would like to know is
who made that post, and how to get on the National Midnight Star.
I apologize for not doing this privately, but I deleted the
message. So if the kind soul who made this statement would
kindly get in touch with me, I would be most appreciative. I
used to be on TNMS a yearago or so, but I've changed email
accounts...oh well.

Thanks~r!!!

Birchmere Trades

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Fri Sep 9 11:35:57 1994

First- I'm usually a pretty nice guy, but I just can't resist.

Sorry. OK- a while back I put up a post for trades for the Dave/Tim
Birchmere show. Well, the tape is here. It all fits on one 90 min. tape,
so I'm going to ask that people get another tape from me as well and, in
return, I can get a full show from them. The tape sounds good,
considering that it's an audience tape, since the Birchmere was so quiet.
BHT set- HORDE 8-26-94 Merriweather Post
Blues Traveler Set- 8-26-94 (sbd)
2/3 of DMB set plus some Allmans- 8-26-94
DMB- 12-11-93 Williams College (full show 100 min)
Try to avoid the DMB show unless you don't like any of the other bands-
it's a 100 min tape, meaning extra time and $ from my end.

Due to time restraints, this offer is open only to-
EWHESSE@amherst.edu
CLIFFORD@urvax.urich.edu
btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu
mxgall@mail.wm.edu
wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu
gsp2m@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu

These are the people who responded to my original offer. Sorry to close it.
Persons listed above- Please keep in mind that you are the 3rd through
8th tape traders to have a copy of this show. Please keep it sort of under
wraps. Even though we got permission from Dave and Jeff to tape and trade
copies of the show, the Birchmere folks must've taken us of the board for
a reason.
As I said before, my 1st trade request is the Phish 4-20-94 Lexington
show, followed by any recent dmb. If neither of these is plausible, make
me another offer. I'll be in touch soon.

TNMS

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Sun Sep 11 19:34:45 1994

1) The National Midnight Star is still in existence and churning out much
mail for RushFans [tm]. To get the digest, send a message with subscribe as
the only text to rush-mgr@syrinx.umd.edu . It may take a few days since
that part of the list is not automated and last year the syrinx drive had
troubles.

POOR college student with two cool discs and a great weekend to show for my
money [ we have homecoming the weekend before].

3) Did anyone else notice, or did every cool band release an album this
month[ or at least just about every cool band] (i.e. DMB, Blues Traveler, the
Samples, REM, Widespread Panic...). At this rate, I will not even be able to
pay my fraternity dues! Argh!

I would not like to play with a fool holding a hand with a one-eyed jack of
spades, unless I was shooting the moon and I had the queen.

Songs that need to be transcribed...

NebuIous@aol.com Sun Sep 11 21:56:51 1994

After EXTENSIVE research (i.e. 2 minutes going "uhhhhhhhhh this one") I have
come up with a list of 10 songs that really need to be transcribed. I'm only
sending this to the list because (a) it's been dead the last few days (b) I'd
like to remind everyone of the curious statistic that of 21 people who
receive the chords file, only 5 people have ever transcribed a song...

Tripping Billies
Recently
Satellite (besides the intro)
Dancing Nancies
Rhyme & Reason
Spotlight
Eyes of The Maker
Drive In, Drive Out
Granny
True Reflections

HELP VA FANS

msweeney@rucs2.sunlab.cs.runet.edu Mon Sep 12 00:34:02 1994

well i've now really annoyed everyone on the concert committe here at school.

here is the deal. as the first line indicates i'm on the concert
committee here at Radford Univ. (near VA TECH right on 81) today I went
to the second meeting. Missed the first one. I found out today that DMB
is in our price range but only about four people on the comm. have heard
of them. And since the first show has to do really well no one will
listen to me when i go "but dave mattews....". so here is my call to
minarets. how many of you guys would be willing to come the distance to
Radford Univ. to see the guys. The deal would be as such. THe deadmon
center(sp?) holds 23,000 people so we need a lot of people for this to work.
Average ticket prices are $14-15. UM no ticket master. also information
desk (where tickets are sold) don't take phone orders (but with the
management do that ticket thing i heard they do). um i can't think of
anything else. If you think this is pointless let me know if you would
come let me know and about how many people you would bring. please only
email me if you there is a real chance of you coming or if you think i'm
just grasping at straws here (hey i've never seen them and can't find a
ride to UVA [hint hint]). oh yeah Radford is right on 81 first exit
after christiansburg when your going south. if I can get alot of address
and interest from people I plan to take it to the next meeting in one
week on the 18th. well i guess i've rambled enough bye bye and sorry but
I had to do this (we can't book phish or Blues Traveler so this is it).

mistake about radford

msweeney@rucs2.sunlab.cs.runet.edu Mon Sep 12 12:26:21 1994

after I posted the post about DMB at radford i got to thinking 23,000 is
big really to big acctually. so i did some checking. as it turns out I
was wrong. according to some book my roomie has deadmon holds 5,000 for
concerts. now I swear hearing 23 something about capacity but the book
says 5,000. so if that makes a diffence let me know.

2 cents on 11/16/93

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Sep 12 12:44:46 1994

I tried to reply to this but it bounce, so I figure I'd have to post it...
Sorry to fill up you boxes, but we've been so inactive lately guess it
dont matter anyhow

I don't know if there is a setlist file somewhere or not, but I need the
setlist for the subject show. I could use the venue name too.

The possiblities for a setlist file has been discussed by a few netters,
but so far none is in existence. The only help I can give you is this.
If dave followed his normal Tues nite at Trax, Wed nite at flood Zone,
you're show would be at Trax, (Charlottesville, Virginia) because I know
ther3e was a 11-24-93 flood zone show. I can't confirm it, but a logical
guess...

i think that makes a pretty big difference....Dave will not have nearly
as much trouble filling 5000 seats as 23,000.....in fact, having Dave
play at some venue that held 23,000 is a little ridiculus [even if it's
in Virginia :) ]

a 5000 seat Dave show in Virginia would be a great idea.....
