 The possiblities for a setlist file has been discussed by a few netters, 
 but so far none is in existence. The only help I can give you is this. 

would a set list file even be appropriate for Dave Matthews?  a 
concentrated effort was made by me and a few others last year but i 
quickly faded from the project and have a feeling the others did as 
well.  Dave's setlists aren't varied enough [moreso these days obviously] 
to compile all his setlists.....IMHO.  This is not to say that someone 
with a real itching to do it shouldn't.  any input?

First off, let me just say a word about the above description....basically 
there is nothing above this line that is of any use to you as a list 
subscriber.  Please disregard the suggestion to change your password.  
I'd also pay no attention to its use.  The password is used in something 
called ILP (Interactive ListProctor).  ILP holds the statistics for this 
mailing list and nothing more. 

If you are a first time/new computer/email user then I'd suggest 
forgetting you ever heard of ILP...however, if you've got a bug to learn 
more, be my guest and check it out and more power to you.... but i doubt 
you'll find much that's useful..... 

To get *useful* things like a dave matthews FAQ, lyric file, interview, 
netter's list, chord file, ect....then read on.

By the way, my name is alex crother (jcrother@moose.uvm.edu) and if 
you ever have questions or need help contact me.  I want to make one

WELCOME TO MINARETS.NET...the one and only place to become a 
Dave Matthews know it all.  Minarets Net was started at the University 
of Vermont and has recieved the help of many people.
Minarets uses a listproc system operator that is uniquely different from 
other mailing lists you may be familiar with.  All commands (ie 
subscribe, digestify, unsubscribe) are sent to the listproc address while 
posts are sent to the minarets address.  Although confusing at first it 
seems to been work out well in the long haul.  Things are always 
changing as I discover more about this system and as minarets/dmb grows.  Be 
patient.  If you have suggestion/questions/inqueries/knowledge, let me know.

3) Did anyone else notice, or did every cool band release an album this
month[ or at least just about every cool band] (i.e. DMB, Blues Traveler, the
Samples, REM, Widespread Panic...).  At this rate, I will not even be able to
pay my fraternity dues! Argh!

let's not forget everything, rusted root's premier cd, new music from
peter gabriel, and a collaboration b/w the dude of life and phish due
out early next month.  also, edie brickell released new music this
month, and for people into industrial (not likely on this net, i know)
pop will eat itself released a new cd this month.

i just found out about everything and peter gabriel today.

UTTAD/jimithing/random thoughts...

i got my UTTAD album sampler today, and i just want to say that one of the most
impressive songs is WWYS with popper.
it was so unexpected, but it's absoulutely insane. (insane good.....)
i dunno maybe some of it has to do with the fact that i've always been a sucker
for a guy who can play the harmonica.. but i'm sure my opinion isn't biased
jsut because of that....

also.. i know last year we established teh jimithing/fallatio connection.. but
'this song is about getting hiiiggggggghhhhhh...'
so i thought i might introduce this as a topic of interest..
i'm not saying it's not about either subject, or only about one or the
other..(because obviously we can see the pertanance to each subject...)
i just thought i'd be spunky and provide a little net-forum.

venue sizes

just for reference this will help you make judgements on the size of
venues.  seems to me that a fair number of people might be interested
in knowing this, so that when they hear "such and such holds 8,000,"
they can get some idea of how big a place they are dealing with.

this will prolly start a small thread, because i'm a bit vague on these,
but it's a start.

100 == any bar specifically designed to bring in bands and play.  this is
800 == crossroads concert hall (TRAX--c'ville).  college town warehouse type
1000 == flood zone(richmond).  another college town warehouse type, but 
5-6000 == redmon center, jmu convo center.  this is about the size of
7-9000 == uhall, va tech, ur (robins center), patriot center (gmu).  this 
10-15000 == city arenas such as richmond coliseum, us air arena (cap center),

i realize all of these venues are virginia specific, but most of the people
on this net are va specific, and i feel i've given a good enough description
to let people know what i'm talking about (that is, if i know what i'm talking
about).  at any rate, 23000 is HUGE.  i have no doubt that one day dave might 
be able to sell out a 23k venue on a nye show or something, but the first 
half of u2's zooropa tour was still being held in places like hampton 
coliseum (see 9k), though the second half of that tour was topping out 
40k and 50k in some places, if i'm not mistaken.

If anyone has yet to hear GSW (they really don't travel too far
south), I HIGHLY recommend giving them a listen.  I'd probably call
them the NY eqivalent of DMB.  (Just putting out their first "real"
nation-wide album...already have a huge word-of-mouth-based
following...Sell out most NYC venues...etc...).

For those who haven't given GSW a listen, I HIGHLY recommend
checking them out (they don't make it south very often).  I'd probably
describe them as the NY equivalent of DMB (just about to release
their first "big" album...sell out just about anyplace in NYC...large
word-of-mouth following...mostly known for floating boots...etc).

I think it would be appropriate just because I know I have a few tapes 
that are unlabeled and/or mislabeled. Obviously it would be a hard

well...you and I've discussed it...

I think we should get together some weekend and start it (I like the 
title Warehouse for the file)...I think between the two of use we have 
a good sampling of years and a 100 hours or so.

I like the idea of including wierd tidbits of Davetalk and between song 
banter and anecdotes at the end of each setlist.  That will also help 
people lable some of those mislabled 92's that seem to float around.

did....as far as GSW being the NY equivalent of DMB, i believe Mike meant 
just the logistic [first nation-wide album, word-of-mouth, ect...] 
aspects between the bands and not the sound/muisc.  When i first read the 
message, it caught me off-guard and i thought to myself, "GSW doesn't 
sound very much like DMB" but after reading it again i figured it all 
out.  not sure if this has a point but oh well.

warehouse...setlist file

i was just thinking about all the quirky souls out there that pride 
themselves on knowing random tidbits of live music facts.  setlists and 
crazy coments at specific shows being way up there on the fav types of 
knowledge to possess. ( "there are 1000 things to eat other than cheese"  
Dave in a crazy voice after Jimmything this summer ..brown's island.)
It's also a given that this type of blessed chatter helps identify 
unlabeled tapes.  Even knowing that the setlists haven't varied much to 
speak of recently, i still think a setlist file would be used.  
(especially if the band gets as big as we think it will and its in a form 
that can be printed and binded way in the future and sold to the quirky 
souls ..like a DEAD BASE say)
I know i have lost my fair share of bets about what was played or said 
when ... and i wouldnt have if i'd had a file to check.  (horrible bets 
like ill do anything you ask whenver you ask it because i KNOW ..but i 
didnt).

MY point.. the setlists will start to vary as dmb gets bigger.  They cant 
play multiple nights at the same venue and play the same songs all the 
time.   If we start a file now ..itll be all that more complete.  SO, if 
enough other people feel similarly ..who's got the motivation to get it 
going? I'll help all i can.

Dave video

With all this talk about the new album I thought I'd throw in a little question
for y'all to ponder on.  If Dave were to come out with a video what would be
the best approach????
I figure I'll throw in my opinion first.  First of all I know MTV sucks in the
way they do their programming.  Putting the best two show on at midnight
(Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes) and some of the songs they choose for Buzz
Clips.  Anyway, I think the best idea by far for a Dave video would be a live
show which would show the incredible talents of each of the members of the
band.  I know it's not very original but I think it would attract more
listeners..(I hesitate in saying that because I'm one of those who wants
the band to make it but also likes the small shows.)  I know some of you think 
Boyd is too Commercially but, for me and others that I know, when I saw the
band in concert for the first time and Boyd went wild along with the way the
band worked together I developed a greater appreciation for the band.  You
can't dispute the fact that Boyd catches the eyes of many new viewers.  
Therefore a live video would attract new people to listen more and eventually
discover the unity of the band and the characteristic of each member along
with what they contribute.

September sold out last night in about an hour, so I heard.  So already, less
than 24 hours later the grovel begins.....Any one with an extra ticket.  For 
some one who loved the Dave Matthews Band back when people answered
"What do you think of the Dave Matthews Band?"  with "Dave who?"
Some of you know me....and if you have a ticket you are probably laughing 
at my thinking that getting one today (Tuesday) was possible, but we all win 
some and in this case we all lose some too.  If you have any info or possible
leads as to where to get an extra, send me a message.  Thanks for 
listening....

Multiple thoughts/questions/offers/grovels

Once again, I have a few things to say.

1. There's still one person out there who hasn't answered my offer for 
the Dave/Tim 8-25-94 Birchmere show. I don't know who you are. Sorry.

2. Because the taping and trading has been smoother than anticipated, I 
would like to offer this show once again to any of the friendly folks on 
the net. The quality is great, except that the clapping at the beginning 
and end of each song is loud, since my friend couldn't put his mike on a 
stand. But it doesn't bother me too much, and I trust it won't bother you 
too much either (especially after you hear Tim play on Tripping Billies- 
wow). If you wish to trade for this tape, I ask the following-

Please be willing to trade for more than one tape- it seems a waste to 
set up a trade for a single tape.

Please have some hi-q of anything (doesn't have to be DMB) to offer. I do 
have things to offer in return.

If you wish to reply, please send a tape list with your request. I'll 
quickly return the favor.

If ANYONE can tell me where I can find a decent tape of the Phish 4-20 
Lexington show, please let me know? Isn't Shelly on this net? Anyone? 

Sorry for the shameless grovel. A few more random musings, since I'm not 
quite ready to read that Plato yet. First, someone recently posted 
something in reference to the topic of Jimi Thing. I had always thought 
that perhaps Jimi Thing was the name of a bong, since the song is about 
smoking up. The line about "take a taste of what's below" is what 
led me to believe this. Maybe it's only my somewhat bizarre group of 
friends that name their bongs. 
Also- has anyone ever done a study of favorite shows, or versions of 
songs, by DMB? I'd be happy to take thoughts on this and compile them if 
there's enough interest- it seems a helpful tool in tape trading. Let me 
know (my votes will go to 5-31-93 at Zollman's).

wow! i am actually kinda surprised that the flood zone did sell
out because the crossroads listening party thing went on sale at
midnight last night (and there was quite a line) and by 1pm today
there were still tickets left and i don't even think it sold out
by day's end either.  the uva amphitheatre tix haven't gone all
THAT  quickly.  intersting . . .

the true meaning of jimi thing is...

...whatever you want it to be.  if there's anything i proudly gave up
as i was younger, it was trying to explain mysterious song lyrics in
a way that will make other people understand what i'm thinking.  i
realized when i started writing my own music and people started trying
to interpret it, then trying to convince me that _i_ wrote a song
because of such-and-such, i realized it's a trivial waste of time, 
because we're never really going to figure out what the writer had
in mind.  
personally, the first thing that comes to mind for me with jimi thing
is felacio (sp?), but that's because i'm always hearing about people
making the connection.  underneath, though, it has a meaning of such
depth that dave would laugh in my face (and so would this net) if
i took the time (and believe me, we'd need a lot of it) to explain
it.  

i think this is why i tend to be so hyped up on phish, these days.
with phish, i don't have to worry about interpretting lyrics.  
or "scent of a mule, ya better watch out where you go, take those
laser beams away..."
kinda let's me get lost in the music without trying to come up
with sentimental meanings for poetry and lyrics i had no part in
creating.  though, i admit it is sometimes really easy to figure
hands..."
obviously there will be some disagreement on this particular post.
me what a song means.  tell me what it means to you.  and i think
that is a good rule to live by.  (there.  i think i've justified
myself...:)

SOME OTHER GOOD BANDS!!!

Hey everyone, Hope everything is good on that end.  I'm writing to let 
you know about a new compilation disc that just surfaced.  Over the last 
nine months, I put together a compilation of 14 bands from all over the 
country, called "The Wiggly Compilation".

It started with my love for Phish, DMB, Blues Traveler, and this band 
the Omar Saeed Qunitet who absolutely blew mw away.  I went searching for 
some new stuff that was lurking out there.  The result is much better 
than I ever thought it would be.

Two of the bands have played the HORDE, and 8 have been featured in Relix.
I had tried to get DMB for the disc, but they were signed only
a few days before, (could have been cool).  

Here's a quick list of the bands :

Planet Be (Boston) - great guitar harmonies, great songs
White Buffalo (Georgia) - HORDE 93, funky shtuff and great vocals
Jambay (San Diego) - HORDE 94, improvisation galore, unbelievable musicians
Band du Jour (Boulder) - Allman like, and yet real original
Spacefish (Arizona) - Very eclectic band, with funny lyrics, and great jams
The Other Half (NYC) - New York groove stuff, with great vocals and movement
Out of the Blue (Penn) - 8 piece band with an original sound and good percs.
Moe (Buffalo) - Very interesting band, semi-Phishy, lots of parts, improv
Blue Miracle (DC) - real hot band with lots of influecnes, latino, southern
Mexican Mud Band (NYC) - funk, jazz, rock, groove tunes
Other People (NC) - psychedlic sounds with great organs and guitars
Omar (SF) - Great original sound, very original tunes, great stuff
Supplication (Dallas) - jazz-rock-southern with a trumpet, a great band
Sons of Papaya (Syracuse) - sax-saga\lyrics, very original and jamming

That's a quick description of the bands.

The disc has a ten page booklet with lots of info about the bands and is

Well my thoughts are more about the dave videotape I have seen, but a 
music video would be cool, esp if treated like Phish's Down With Disease 
(cuz I haven't seen it yet..)

the videotape (i guess bootleg vidoetape) I have seen is FloodZone 92ish 
(i forgot the date labled) and was filmed from both sides of the balcony 
and the floor. TO me it sounds like Dave announces everything in Dutch 
(he did spend a lot of time in Amsterdam, you know) and has a lot of cool 
shit. I borrowed it from someone I have not seen in a while, but I was 
just curious if anyone had had the privelidge of seeing this video. If I 
can find it again maybe it'll be th first Dave vidoe tree..

Sorry to do this, but no more tape offers. I've gotten 7 since 11 pm last 
night. And thanks for all the 4-20 offers. I can't say enough about the 
wonderful people on this net group. I'll try to post another tape offer 
sometime soon- I should be getting the board feed up here in New Haven on

that none of the three of us recognized.  The tape was from a DKE party here
at UVA in 1992 (sorry , the exact date was not on the tape).  Dave introduces
indiscernable.  I'll post the few words I did catch later.  Any ideas?

Warehouse thing/question/help me i'm babling

Warehouse... what a good name.  Since it's generally agreed upon that even at
their height of different setlists, they still weren't all that surprising
each night, so the idea of putting nuggets of information (mmmm... nuggets...
mcdonalds.... 9 piece...) between each setlist... maybe it could also be
pretty varied in its information.  the setlist/davespeak part could just be a
portion, maybe a whole section of compiled Nancies strangeness, or a listing
of which recently's have a 'pretty pretty girl' jam... woa, i'm getting
carried away.  but i'm sure there are a ton of things that could be added to
make it more random and scatterbrained... to make it more of a warehouse of
dusty information.

'brother sister...'
that's the name of a brand new heavies album too. and a song on the album.

by the way, since i'm already rambling, let me ask you virginia.net.gods...
what song used to have the sometimes intro-jam with the basic idea of "some
people do... some people don't... some people do... some people don't..."
then he lists all the things that some people like to do and some don't.  was
it recently? or billies?

A few ????'s

Howdy Dave fans!
I've just got a few basic questions.  First of all I always hear so much
about Dave's background, but what about Boyd, Carter ect.?
Where are they from, how did the band originate and exactly when did it
begin?????   Also when the new cd comes out later on this month will I be
able to get it by calling the merchandise line that I got my other 2 Dave's
by calling?? No stores around hear carry Dave.  And lastly, anyone interested
in trading??  Ive got @ 9 to trade and always looking for more.  So if you've
got some good stuff let me know.(Rsr3078)  Well hope to talk to you soon

i think they should dress up as the cure, use computer graphics to

Dave video...

While we're on the topic of what sort of Dave video would be cool, I thought
you might be interested in knowing that I do have a Dave video; it came with
the promo package for UTTAD. It's got a couple concerts pieced together of
them doing 'Tripping Billies'. Its pretty damn cheesy, if you ask me - the
voice isn't synched in some parts, and there's this hilarious slo-mo sequence
of Boyd doing the solo. It, of course, shows the obligatory smiley-happy
neo-hippie crowd (this video is supposed to go to concert halls who are
looking for acts) and it gives me a hoot every time I view it. Oh well, just
my 2 cents.

Maker Lyrics

I didnt realize that the lyrics to some of these older songs
haven't been transcribed.

This is "The Maker" (aka "Eyes of the Maker"). Not sure who's
song it is, but Michael Hedges does a very clean version of it,
where you can actually understand all of the lyrics (but I can't
figure out which of 300 that's filler on, so clarity'll have to
wait).  Jerry Garcia Band also covers it, as they did in Richmond
last year.

I transcribed this on one listen through of the 12-9-92 version
that is filler on set two of 6-26-93, as released by the band for
the tree offered here.  (BTW, I've mailed all the blanks I
received, and apologetically cannot do any more, since I am
starting to get the beginning of the flood of blanks for the
newbie offer I made on the Phish net.)

Anyway, here's my attempt... maybe your listen through can move
this along. No reason we can't finish the lyrics file -- at least
in terms of having a rough guess -- in the next couple of weeks.
What we can't piece together, the band might help with; there
have helpful and insightful instances which began with members of
Phish laughing at some of what was in the phish.net's lyrics
file, and then pointing out some corrections.  Actually, I sat
with Boyd and a small group at Miller's last night (to hear Corey
Harris' delta blues, which I highly recommend, but I digress) and
should have asked him about these lyrics, but I digress. Here

Anyone on the net,
Halloween night to play at the U of Notre Dame, where I go to school.  Does
anyone know of this date, and if so, is this info correct?  I am rather
excited at the moment, but still a little hesitant because Dave is worried
about coming out that Monday night.  That is the day we return from fall
break, and I guess they are worried about attendance.  I know there will be
at least one Domer there - me!  Just get in contact with me personally if
anyone knows anything about anything.

"The Maker" is a song written by, I beleive, Daniel Lanois.  I've got his
two commercially released discs, there could be more?  The Maker is on the
first.  It's called Acadie (or something close to it).  It is, imho, a worthy
cd :-).

 MY point.. the setlists will start to vary as dmb gets bigger.  They cant 
 play multiple nights at the same venue and play the same songs all the 
 time.

Why not? Spin Doctors do (or did). Blues Traveler played similar setlists at
Trax all three shows.

my first dave show was the first sunday of july in 1992 (the 5th, i think?) 
and it was at the lime kiln arts center in lexington, va.  i would *love love 
love* a tape of this show if anyone has one.  there weren't all that many 
people there, as i recall, but someone might have made a tape.  all i 
remember is that i really enjoyed the show, despite not having heard any of 
their songs before.  so if anyone has a july 5, 1992 tape from lime kiln in 
big lex, please let me know.  merci, merci!

Hello all,
time.  Minarets.net has turned out to be a really nice place!  Ok, my point is 
this.  I got this tape about two years ago from a friend who said that it 
kicked ass but that is all she could tell me about it.  Let me describe 
some of the Dave ramblings and maybe someone can give me a date and venue 
name.  It is at some kind of outdoor festival, Dave says something like,
"It is such a lovely spring day and I just discovered that I don't perspire 
beginnings of my collecting DMB tape?  I have one other tape that was my second
tape, also from the same clueless person, without a date.  It is from Athens,
Ga right after R2T came out.  There is an "Angel From Montgomery" dedicated 
to the Athens crew.

ok ok ..im ostiricized rick ..only i didnt really mean "sell" ..  i 
.  I was thinking more on these lines ... not all people have 
net access, not everyone will in the future either.  If the band gets 
WAY big, in the future ...people without net access might want a copy 
the "warehouse file" (or whatever it is called if it is decided that 
making  such a file is worthwile).  We ought to make such a file in a form 
that could be printed and binded so that those future quirky souls can have 
access to it too.  The "sold" bit comes in like this ..there has to be 
some $ involved to cover the costs of printing and binding... not $ for 
profitt.  Am i being more clear this time????
and ellis ... i guess im spoiled.  But, i've never imagined a band 
playing the same songs at multiple night preformances at the same venue.  
Maybe that means im narrow minded too.  I dunno ..but i guess i was 
thinking  of the dead ..from my knowledge and experience ..they don't do 
that. i didnt mean to step on any toes! and Im still grinnin.. 
but i definately hope they dont play the same sets when they get that big if 
they do.  
jimmything....have fun and let the meanings of a song be whatever they 
are to you.  maybe im a perv. thats  been hidin the closet..but its 
really easy for me to see "take a taste of what's below"  as way way 
sexual...but then i can see other stuff too... i know ive heard him say 
its about gettin HIGHHHH ..but play with that too.. they're lot's of 
highs folks!   

and ben ... "some people do ..some don't" etc.. thats Recently ...and its 
my moma's fav' dave thing.  she loves to get curious about "some people 
smoke a bowl some won't" ... "is it don't or won't?" she asks with a 
devious smile and grin!

Hey there y'all.

for that matter, possibly playing the same set on two nights during a run.
do play quite similar shows sometimes, but it's always at least a bit varied
in the order of songs.
Their repertoire is going to keep growing, and sset lists are bound to be
more varied.
all!  Many artists play the same set for an entire _tour_.  And they only
play one set a night, at that.
it wouldn't be so bad if he played the same show a couple times in a row.  :)

BTW, does anyone have good directions to the Ritz in Raleigh?  I could also
give someone a ride to the show there if anyone needs one.

Old Tapes

First off, I want to say what an incredible song The Maker is..  I have it
on only one tape that was in the back of my collection and I hadn't listened
to in a long time (it was one of my first DMB tapes, and wasn't the GREATEST
quality..  so it got shuffled) and hot damn..  all I can say is Dave & co
better get off their asses and write more material.  Seems like every 'new'
song I hear for the first time blows me away.  (come up through my toes to my
ankles to my head to my soul I'm blown away)  There is something to be said
that cannot be put into words (think about it) about a band/musician that
reaches into your soul and can manipulate you like that.  When your emotions
run loose, it's a beautiful thing.

I can understand seeing a loved one for the first time in a long time, or
smelling the scent of a campfire from your childhood, or tasting mom's home
cooking.  But to think that every single time we listen to certain music, no
matter how often, it continually puts you in that state of overwhelmingness..
it's mind-boggling.

Ok.. well, I think I've rambled enough..  'course, that's what this net is
all about, no? :)

Speaking of The Maker, though, I was going through some of my tapes, &
thought I'd see if I could get any help here..

hmm..  looks like either 2 shows, or someone seriously messed me up when they
gave me the setlist. :)

Also, if you have The Maker, or any tapes with anything they don't play every
show, I'd love to get my greedy little paws on it.  I have a decent
number of tapes (dmb, bt, & a bit of everything), so let me know if you'd
like to trade.

I would have to agree...that's completely how I got involved in this 
whole DMB scene...I never understood Deadheads until I heard DMB...I 
saw them play here (albeit slightly intoxicated), and had to keep 
listening, and if I listen, I have to keep listening...I can't just 
listen for a "little while".  (Does that make sense?)

Rusted Root near Richmond, VA

[Sorry if you don't live in/near VA..  you can stop reading now]

I know there's a separate Rusted Root mailing list now, I'm on it, but since
there are so many Richmond, VA-area people on minarets, and knowing
first-hand what an incredible band Rusted Root is, I thought I'd share.

Rusted Root will be playing at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA (near
Richmond..  near Kings' Dominion) on October 2nd at around 6pm (to 7:30 or
so) for FREE.

Their road manager just emailed me, so this info should be pretty up to date
and correct.. :)

Rusted Root is a neo-hippie band (like, who isn't?) with an incredible sound.
They have 7 people in the band, and probably play a combined 20 instruments.
And that exagguration isn't big..  Their music has tons of energy, they all
seem to be very good musicians, and it's just a fun time for all.  (eww)

Seriously, though, I've been listening to them since a netter included some
of their first cd as filler, and I (and my girlfriend at the time) liked it
so much we ordered cd's from a store in PA (they were/are still growing..),
and they just put out a new CD a few weeks ago (major label) that is
incredible.  Called When I Woke.  Anyway, a friend who'd never heard them
before and I saw them at horde, and he only said 'they are going to be big'..
and I think he is right, they have a unique sound that's very eclectic,
including lots of drums and washboards and well, just about anything you can
play music on.

Ok, anyway, sorry for the wasted ramblings to those whom this information
does no good.  But if you can, check them out!  I'm dragging lots of friends
with me & if you're going, let me know!

(not like nowadays) this was in the days when he did the stunning harmony on
the word 'doind' in the phrase 'everybody asks me how she's doing' 9anyone who
has a version of pay4 with this knows what i mean....[wink, wink]

the bands covers in the file?  i always figured i was making a file
for the band specifically, so i left out all the covers.  if the net
thinks they should be there (i know that phish.net includes covers),
let me know.  aside from the maker, we need me & julio and watchtower.
i really don't think at this point we need nature, or any of the others,
because they just don't seem that important.  well, maybe redemption
song.

i know they never play me & julio anymore, nor are they likely to, but
the version i've heard is so great that every dave fan deserves a copy,
and therefore the lyrics.

so, if you think the lyrics file should include these covers, just send
me a quick note saying so, and i'll work on getting them in there.

supposed to trade some tapes with a guy named Brian Blaloc from James Madison
U, but I lost his email address.  I think we got in contact through this group,

Friday, and lost a lot of files, so....  Anyways, I apologize to all the others

DMB Philly show

Just so that everybody knows, the October 1 DMB show at the TLA in Philly 
is NOT opening for Rusted Root.  It is just a regular Dave show with From 
Good Homes opening.  Dave is, though, opening up for the Root on October 
7 in Pittsburgh at their belated CD release party.  Keep it jammin'

 the bands covers in the file?  i always figured i was making a file
 for the band specifically, so i left out all the covers.  if the net
 thinks they should be there (i know that phish.net includes covers),
 let me know.  aside from the maker, we need me & julio and watchtower.
 i really don't think at this point we need nature, or any of the others,
 because they just don't seem that important.  well, maybe redemption
 song.
 
 i know they never play me & julio anymore, nor are they likely to, but
 the version i've heard is so great that every dave fan deserves a copy,
 and therefore the lyrics.
 
 so, if you think the lyrics file should include these covers, just send
 me a quick note saying so, and i'll work on getting them in there.

check this band out....they play a very wide genre of musicical styles 
and can take you on a literal rollercoaster as a result.  Very talented 
with a complete horn section, this band keeps you dancin, groovin and 
smokin.  There symbol is an "e" with a ":" after it in a circle..so it looks 
Madison University and there base is now Washington, DC.  It's a six 
piece that plays over a dozen solid instruments (not just percussion

The new disc...

I know we have discussed the songs a zillion times, so I'll leave that 
out, but I just got the new disc, the actual thing, courtesy of my job at 
WLUR the school radio station. I think it is quite good, but leaves out 
boyd solos as someone has already mentioned. Dave does the kinda geeky, 
kinda nifty thing of making #34 track 34 with 1second tracks inbetween. 
The new satellite adds Tim which is cool, but I might as well never 
listen to the Ants again...and I also lament the fact that, as I had 
somehow thought, that Say Goodbye is nowhere to be seen. Anyways IMHO a 
solid effort showing what the studio can add...
Picts inside the cover are cool too, I think you can see downtown 
Richmond in the top right coner of one, but I could be wrong...

Whilst having the disc in my posession, I could not bear to force myself 
to another version of ants, I already have heard it played 6 different 
ways and have grown to sticking with my favorite bootlegs (sut as Sweet 
Home Alabama-Ants Marching)

 (I hope so, really....)
IMHO the dueling banjos made the song in the first place and gave it a 
cool feel, but I have succumbed to overexposure and am thankful to not 
hear those fatul notes at a concert....

this sounds like I am an english major, but I'm not hmmm...

yes, that verse riff is as hard as it looks.  the key to it (and most any
dmb song) is to use your pinky for any note you can't quite reach.  just
practice.

sometimes repeated once more, other times repeated many times with
vocal jam

this riff is used throughout the song, and is easiest to master if
you use index finger for all 2s and 5s on the low e-string, your 
ring finger for all 3s and 7s on the low e-string, your middle finger
on all 2s and 6s on the d-string, and your pinky for all 4s and 7s on
the d-string.  and an easier way to master this song is to watch dave
carefully if you ever get the chance.  it may sound like a simplistic
way, but if you can get up closer to him, you'd be amazed at how his
progressions stand out in your mind when you get back to your own axe,
even if you were standing thirty feet away from him.

well, i promised i'd pass along all the responses i got so here they are --
good for a laugh if nothing else.  thank you muchly to all who responded...
unfortunately, the band lives on without a name (no offense to the
contributors but nothing jumped out at us).  anyway, for now we're still
calling ourselves "kindband"... someone told me there's a band in maine with
the same name -- can anyone verify/disprove that rumor?  thank you again to

Hmm....good band names.  Mental floss?  Kind of cheezy.....How about just
taking a few random words you see on signs or whatever and sticking them
together.  You can get cool names like Ekoostik Hookah this way if you change
the spelling a bit.  My band is named Filbert.  There's a rather disgusting
story behind it.  You could take a funny inside joke type thing and name the
band after that....Anyway, enough of my rambling.  Good luck in getting a
name.

now, ask me why a band that came out of harrisonburg has decided to skip
1)h-burg's musical scene sucks.

a lot of us here at jmu are wondering why we aren't mentioned in the
liner notes of r2t along with w&l and uva.  simple.  our program board
is too cheap to get us great bands.  so why am i sitting here bitching
about it an entire country's worth of dave matthews fans?  well, this
is more directed towards local people within the range of the dates i
to support a headlining band.  it's twenty nine cents, and i don't
think it would be that hard for you to follow up, seeing as jmu students
have been flocking to other schools for years (but not by choice.)

i guess what really bothers me is that while dave is making it big out
of c-ville, and acknowledging his roots, everything, which really is
a great band, is being forced to place roots in dc, and full stop, ALSO
from harrisonburg, uprooted themselves to make a home in athens.  why
do bands from h-burg have to relocate to other cities to get noticed
at all?  because h-burg is a black-hole in the music world.  so, if
i can just get a glimmer of a hope that we can get some good music here
this spring, i'd appreciate it.

i'm not posting a full review of the cd here on the net because i'm of
the philosophy that you should have some surprises, but i'll say these

1) i really like best now.  it was of passing interest to me before,

2) if you can find a way to program your cd player to automatically


without further ado, here is a full critique of ants as it appears on
uttad.  if your undigestified, you can hit delete now and just wait,
if your digestified, i've left excess room at the top and bottom of the
critique so that you can hit return successively (once or twice, i don't
know because i'm not done yet) until you see my sig.  it's __extremely__
subjective and worth many a flame, but so many people have talked about
their problems with the r2t version that i see no reason to be nice.  i
know this goes against the "minarets.net is such a nice place" ideal, but
a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do (and you women are more than welcome
to do what you wanna do as well..;)












it's the same goddamn fucking thing as remember two things with maybe
1)the annoying intro has been shortened, but alas, not altogether 
2)they've added some sort of abbreviated chorus between the first and
3)the other places where dueling banjos appeared is now just a simple

aside from that, it's the same song _yet again_.  it still starts with
a really annoying chop from carter which segues horribly into what 
actually sounds like the exact same mix from trax on aug 31st, 1993,
only without the crowd's cheering.

















and now back to our regularly scheduled minarets.net.  i insist that
you flame me personally, because a lot of people like minarets the way

master for the first interview Carter did with the band, but now that
they're getting big, Carter wants to hear the interview to make sure he 
didn't stick his foot in his mouth before we transcribe it, and I plan
on respecting that.  (There are some things he said which he probably
wouldn't want to admit to.  There is also Dave singing Monkees songs in
the background.)  If this doesn't get transcribed for a while, will
it still be able to make it in?  
of a cassettee, and then some....

 anyway, for now we're still
 calling ourselves "kindband"... someone told me there's a band in maine with
 the same name -- can anyone verify/disprove that rumor?  thank you again to
 all who wrote and enjoy.......

printed up a bunch of fliers on green paper.... I think that must be a 
pretty common name around the U.S. ...  But, I've haven't seen them yet, 
and have know idea what their style is...
(Hmm.... I wonder if they get high...)

Sorry for the delay in organizing the Seattle 7/17/94 tree.  Here it is,
finally.

I wanted to keep it wide at the top so that nobody would get anything
worse than a cass copy of a cass copy of a DAT.  Thus, I'm making 3
cassettes and 2 DATs myself.

Please let me know ASAP if I made any mistakes or if anyone's situation
has changed.  I tried to make this structure work well for everyone.

If anyone does not know how trees work, don't be afraid to ask.  I
realize this is a terse posting with little explanation.

If you're getting a tape from me, I will contact you directly.  Everyone
else, please contact those above you and those below you.

 i guess what really bothers me is that while dave is making it big out
 of c-ville, and acknowledging his roots, everything, which really is
 a great band, is being forced to place roots in dc, and full stop, ALSO
 from harrisonburg, uprooted themselves to make a home in athens.  why
 do bands from h-burg have to relocate to other cities to get noticed
 at all?  because h-burg is a black-hole in the music world.  so, if
 i can just get a glimmer of a hope that we can get some good music here
 this spring, i'd appreciate it.

i remember some time ago there was an article in the back of Spin 
Magazine detailing the music scene coming out of the H'burg area[actually 
it was not H'burg but some area close to it--newport?] and it seemed to 
indicate that this area could become the "next Seattle"---hurray! :)

regardless, that was several years ago and I'm not even sure why i still 
remember it but that's my two cents.

as far as H'burg being a cultural/musical blackhole, it seems to stem 
from the fact that there really aren't many places to play in Hburg.  

The only club [that i know of] is JM's and that has several 

I believe JMU has a larger concert hall but that traces back to the fact 
that JMU's concert committee never gets off its ass [sorry if i offend 
anyway]....seems like Hburg needs a medium size venue [500-2000 people]...

I saw Everything open for Aquarium Rescue Unit in Ithaca a few weeks ago
and let me tell you they are AMAZING!!  They are excellent musicians, very
innovative, very rockin, groovin, and definetely funky.  One of their
songs, SO THIS, is so funky it hurts.  I am serious these guys are unknown
and AWESOME!!  They also have a really cool message in their lyrics.
Lastly, I got to chill with them and they are definetely REALLY Cool with a
capital C.  I got a tape of the show as well as ARU (who was also
incredible) and I would be Very interested in trading Everything tapes.
CHECK THEM OUT!! YEAAAAAAAH!

Is Dave Enlightened?

I find myself asking that question because his poetry is so beautiful and
inspired.  He touches the heart of basically ANY listener who gives him a
chance.  I have single handedly turned on virtually all of my friends to
DMB and let me tell you it was not hard.  He has touched my life in such a
positive way!
Also, the whole band is full of simply AMAZING musicians.  It is almost to
good to be true.  Ahhh, the bittersweet sensation of a small band reaching
a MUCH larger crowd, but that is a good thing right?

anyway...listen to DMB 3/17/93 Floodzone Richmond, VA...it'll make you 
drop what you're doing, do bonghits, drink SS Oatmeal Stouts and enjoy 
life.  And the Jimi Thing w/ Doug laying down some Hammond might drive 
you nuts...

copy of the show at Ziggy's if nothing else.  I talked to the guys before and
after the show, and they were not only really nice, but thanked me several
times for interest in the band, and said that next time, I'd get a copy of
the show [ I won't forget my deck this time!!!] and anyone interested can get
a copy of the show[s] from me either in the form of a tree[ but I don't have
a DAT, nor do I know anyone around here that does, nor does Ziggy's , but
JS[?]  ] or I'll just make you a copy dep on demand.  

is a "black hole of music" .  At least you've had cool bands in your
hometown.  I know of one band from Charlotte that is making it, ie Brother
Cain.  Winston-Salem, my hometown has produced such fantastic [ yeah right]
folks as the dB's [ great band, no future, jangle was dead when they got
good], Let's Active [ my first concert was their last in the US for the Asso.
of Retarded Citizens benefit at my high school's auditorium [2000]], and of
course the Drive-IN Studios.  Ziggy's does have great bands sometimes
but they also have bands like "the Archers of Loaf" or "Superchunk" [ sorry
if you like them, but I hated their show].  I will say this, once a year they
will advertise all over the state and get some kickass, dropkickin,
lipsmackin groovy band or two.  They got Counting Crows and Cracker before
either got too much airplay on eMpTyV. But there is nothing else to do nor
anywhere else to go, so Ziggy's can charge more now, and since I'm 20, the
absolute worst age in the world. ie I can go to a club here, but not in some
other states, and even if i can, i can't have much fun if the band sucks. 
Now if the band doesn't suck then I just stay sober, so i can remember the
awesome tunes.  Davidson's main claim to fame is soccer, and then maybe one
band called Electroluxe.  If anyone up Va way has heard them, i'm surprised.

But, for the most part, in other words, Winston sucks kiwifruit.


How bout either WWW page or gopher site? Our system here is private, ie you
can't even finger me to see if I'm here [ well, you could but it wouldn't be
pleasant for you or me  ;)  ] so I couldn't do that. Less than five
days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [till I go broke in 5 minutes of shopping for cd's]

fav's.  That might horrify some of you, but it's a good song for me.  It's
definitely not the Song that Jane Likes [ I liked it at first b/c it mentions
cards, and I love CARDS, especially spades, anyone need a fourth?], or
Satellite [ my hard drive is named Satellite], or Seek Up [ chills come to
mind?], but it's still Dave and I say that a bad DMB song is better than some
bands best efforts, so hey....  Anyway, thanks for the bandwidth! Peace, and

and boyd (i think boyd was up there), some people from eddie from ohio, gibb
droll, & that was amazing..  didn't take the time out to count, but there
must've been 15 musicians or so up there all getting into it all jamming away
forever.  it was a ritz power jam/wasabi-type get together of all VA bands
that was incredible.

I just bought Remember Two Things and I just wanted to say that
it's terrific.  

Christmas song is last on the cd and listed as 10:53 on my cd player at work.
I was listening along, thinking the song was over when suddenly I heard a 
clap of thunder and then the sound of frogs and crickets, much like after a 
storm on a summer night.  

This was so unexpected and wonderful :-)  DMB puts me in a very
comtemplative mood and this little bit of nature was the perfect way to
end the cd, for me.  Anyway, forgive my ramblings.

Minarets Home Page and FTP site

there has been alot of discussion lately about getting an FTP site and 
Web Home Page for minarets, so i'll go ahead and address that now--both 
are in the works.  Currently minarets is undergoing some significant 
changes that will ultimately place most[all?] of its resources on 
phish.net's computer at Brown University.  Once permanetly located here, 
minarets will contain a home page on the World Wide Web 
mailing list will most likely be run from this computer too.  

If anyone wants to talk to me about this or has anything to add, please 
contact me [jcrother@moose.uvm.edu]

I'd also like to thank Ben Tanen and Lee Silverman publicly for their help.

maybe we can start generating some ideas of what should be included at 
the ftp site and on the home page....

December! Hooray! All I know about are the dates with Phish; does anyone

Dog's Eye View

Oh so much to say, (some DMB some DMB-free)

First, I saw Tori Amos last night (great show) and the opening guy was
named peter stuart.  He was selling tapes of him and his band "dogs eye
view" for $5 so I picked one up.  I was really impressed by both his stage
presence and songs, and his band.  My question - does anyone know any more
about this band.  I think they are from N.Y.?

Secondly - the 27th will be a banner day at most record stores.  There was
a full page add in the Westword (Colorado's music/events rag) for a
midnight madness deal - and they put big pictures of Big Head Todd's album
and UTTAD.  I just thought that was cool.  Other albums to pick up on that
day :
seems to like the song 'If I Had A Boat'.  Wouldn't that or LA County make
good DMB covers?)
Boulder Theater - so it shouldn't sound as polished as Sister Sweetly)
Monday morning the alarm went off,
Monday morning I hit snooze,
The radio came alive again 9 minutes later,
I killed it with another snooze 9 seconds later,
Next thing I remeber - "...lifetimes pass you by.  What would you say?" end
of the song - I would say "never hit that second snooze - or you might miss
something.

goodbye-ly (sorry this is quite long and rambling - but I'm knee deep in
procrastination from homework...)

I think that it could be the pinnacle of my music collection. I have cool

hey whats up....

i was looking for anyone that has some big head todd they would like to trade
for some dave or widespread.... i reallly would like some big head todd or a
version of #34 for that matter..... contact me we can talk trade.

also my two cents on ants marching...... first i love the song. I hate the
little single drum intro but the drum intro on 2/22/94 at trax is pretty cool.
i also like the little part dave and stefan do the descending funky kinda
thing. i think we all have a favorite intro but we can't expect dave to put
dueling banjos or sweet home alabama on his first big release. that would
certainly limit his audience..... iwouldn't want my first BIG release to be
associated(sp) with sweet home or dueling banjos i would want it to be my
own....but anyway....
looking for bht and a copy of #34.....

the drum solo/jam to ants on feb 22 was probably one of the best dave
experiences i've ever had.  it's almost (if not almost, then more)
funky than #36 and just rocks to all hell.

in fact, i think that's the best dave show i've seen to date.  if
they had just played warehouse instead of granny during that second
set, there would be absolutely no topping it.

actually, there is a better drum solo/jam.  if any of you get the 
chance, check out the encore to dmb/phish, 4-21 in winston-salem.
fishman and carter jam together on a single drum set, then carter
slides off onto his own set, they jam together like no man knows, 
then both complete bands work their way into the jam which melts
into a rippin' watchtower.

This sounds a lot like 7/8/92 from (I think) the Floodzone.

I have Seek Up, Drive In Drive Out (debut), Nancies, Jane, Watchtower, 
Two-Step, Minarets  Blue Water, So Much To Say, Satellite, Tripping Billies

This tape was labeled in the infancy of my DMB fandom so there are bound 
to be mistakes.
