some clare clarification....

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Wed Sep 28 18:47:54 1994

i think it was will foy who said he'd have to disagree with me and say how much
he likes #34.

i might've confused netland with one of my more recent posts....

i LOVE #34. it is a gorgeous, haunting, and beautiful song.. if i would allow
myself to listen to it as much as i'd like, it could possibly surpass 'lover'
[as all who know me have their mouths agahst at the thought...since i love
'lover' so damn much...]
it is just too emotional of a song for me to listen to it often. and lord knows
i'm too emotional a girl to handle listening to it too often.

to all of you who have never heard #34 live, or with it's lyrics... the best is
yet to come.... from the 3/17/93 version, 'oh i throw myself at your feet
laughing....' god what a stunning thought..

to quote my beloved blayk kambill quoting beloved dave singing #34,

I saw that someone already put out the setlist for the UVA

in the encore, but wasn't due to time constraints and noise

DRIVE IN, DRIVE OUT (this was just Dave and Carter, but it was
phenomenal. As John can back up, I've been on Dave to play this
for the past 3 months, and he finally did)

In side notes, I talked to Stefan after the show, and he said
that they had been working on Drive In, Drive Out, and wanted to
get it back in to circulation soon.

Side note #2, Dave said that he was re-writing SPOTLIGHT. He
said that there were some parts of it that he absolutely loved,
and some parts that he thought were just *blech*. So, I'd expect
to see a revamped Spotlight soon.

Songs from last night which were on the set list which weren't

Upon listening to the tapes (im at Lie in our graves, now)

damn that was a long digest...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Sep 28 22:43:11 1994

for those of you not digestified yet, i don't see how you can deal with
some 40-50 new mail messages a day.
anyway, wanted to talk about taping for dave shows. about a year ago,
a freind of mine was promised that a board patch would be available
forever, barring any intrusion from rca. there's one problem to
universal board patches, though, and that is that there's only one
patch. this means that the second person to show up plugs into the
next person into the next person into the next person. what this means
is that if the first person so much as changes his levels, it affects
straight down the line until the last person, who gets shafted with
a show that keeps fading in and out. also, if any person along the way
loses the signal (such as hitting stop), then everyone below him will
have a break in the tape.

them. everyone hates audience tapes, but they're really not that bad.
my audience tape of phish 12-28-93 is a helluva lot better than my
sbd of phish 8-20-93. pretty much, if you have the equipment to make a
good audience tape, and you can't get there early enough to get high up
on the soundboard patch, then bring your equipment. demand for dave
tapes is really skyrocketing, and your service will be well noted.
(maybe if someone could start bringing a patch bay to hook the soundboard
patch to...)

anyway, that's all for now.

i'm still working diligently on getting the lyrics file out to everyone.
i've gotten over 30 requests in the past 48 hours. it used to take about
2 weeks to get that many, so be patient. i have to send them all out
manually.

In response to Rick's post - I agree with everything except that
at Irving Plaza on 7/28 there were THREE original feeds from the
soundboards so there were THREE people with the first feeds and
it spread out the load. I don't know how this was done, or
whether it had anything to do with the particular venue. Maybe
this could be done at future shows as well.

Jimi Thing -- Doobie Bros.

ivans@acpub.duke.edu Thu Sep 29 01:47:04 1994

That first little riff in Jimi Thing is vaguely reminiscient of the
Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music." But, once you get passed the
first 20 seconds of the song it is entirely different. Of course. It's Dave.
I'm going to Raleigh to see the concert on Thursday night. I'll post a
set list and a full report afterwards.

taping scene with Dave Matthews is that you must be self-sufficient. If
you plan on taping, plan on bringing everything you need. Don't expect
to get patch cord, power strips, batteries, flashlights, pens, setlists,
ect... from Jeff. He's got his own shit to deal with and we[the taping
community] should be greatful that a soundboard patch is still available
[if anyone wants a reality check, try to find another signed band that
you'll need and one extra [for the guy who forgot].

enough.
sorry to go off, but i worked hard and put in my $0.02 often to make sure
that taping would remain available to fans. I'm extremely greatful that
DMB/Jeff can still allow a soundboard patch at nearly every show--which
is something that must have been a very large hassle with RCA. take
care.

screen savers

eas5e@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Thu Sep 29 11:40:53 1994

Newspapers, a chain of dailies outside Washington D.C. I'd like to do an
article on Dave Matthews for our computer section. Why the computer section?
Because it seems pretty unusual for a rock n' roll band to come out with a
screen saver/sounds disk, or to have an email network for fans. The disk is
in the newest catalog included in the CD cover.

the D.C. suburbs -- about why this net appeals to you and why you would or
would not use a screen saver/sounds disk from the Dave Matthews Band. Also,
have any of you heard of any other bands coming out with a screen saver? I've
heard the Grateful Dead has some dancing bears and that Aerosmith might have
one, but these are much older bands with totally different styles of music.
Are there email networks out there for other bands?

it sometime in the next week, so hopefully it would run in the next couple of
weeks. I'd be happy to file it on the net for anyone who wants to read it
when it's done.

Re: web homepage

jcrother Thu Sep 29 12:51:51 1994

I have the resources available such that I can set up a DMB home page
if someone can send me information to put in it (pics, sounds, random
 	data, etc).
We've offered resources for both a home page and a public access ftp site,
both of which we were told are not useful since apparently we're going to
 be sharing resources with phish.net

i've addressed this several times already, however, with such an influx
of new subscribers, why not repeat myself...

first off, a thank you to all who have offered and are involved in
expanding minarets. Minarets, as with any mailing list, is based on the
efforts of its subscribers. Nothing that's happen or is about to happen
could have come about without the help of many individuals.

Topic 1: HOME PAGE
Check it out, but, like i said, its still very crude. If you have any
suggestions/knowledge/ or contributions for the home page, PLEASE, PLEASE
get in contact with Mike Makunas mmakunas@emerald.tufts.edu before this
weekend so everything can be ironed out...he's the man. so that's that.

Topic 2: FTP Site
other addresses for phish.net's computer at brown. You can either FTP
there or Gopher, whichever you prefer. If you FTP, log in as 'anonymous'
and use your email address as your password. If you have any ideas
or contributions for the FTP site, contact me[alex crothers] or Ben Tanen.
As of this moment, there are only some GIF files [pictures scanned in to
the computer and stored as files]. Within a few days there should be a
GIF viewer and all the text files for DMB [ie-lyric, FAQ, tab, article, tour
dates, ect..]

i'm tired goodbye.

What's the deal here? Certainly, 135 minutes is nothing to complain
about, and apparently the band's been sounding great lately. But I kind of
like the two set format- gives you that "halftime" to cool off, have a
beer, etc. The only non- HORDE show I saw this summer- Hammerjacks- was a
one-setter as well. When I spoke to Dave at the Jones Beach HORDE show Sept. 1, he
told me they'd be playing two set shows during this fall "tour". I still
believe him- after all, he wasn't lying about song #34 being on the album

so.

assuming a lot of these new people don't have a ton of tapes yet, i say we
tree the 9/28/94 show, and FAST. no matter how big the tree is, if we limit
it to minarets, it can't be mamoth, and it will give everyone a good show to
add to/begin their collection.

bealerk@vt.edu Thu Sep 29 19:26:43 1994

Well, it's nice to be back on the net, and good to see some familiar names
(and a whole shitload of others too - wow has this thing grew!!) In any case,
I'm at Wesleyan now and looking to reconnect with any one I lost touch with
while I was moving to resume trading, so if you're still out there, drop
me a line. Now, some Q's...does anyone know what the band gets to do a show,
money wise, trying to book some bands here and have a small budget. Also,
what is on the screen saver, anyone have it? Finally, in response to the
Doobie Bros thread, I have had a tape for a while now with a song called
"Doobie Thing" on it. It's just a short ditty like the one that opens the
Jimi on the album, I'll check the date of my tape and post it later. Once
again, good to be back, Ian

New Releases

sdeutsch@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Thu Sep 29 19:54:30 1994

Ok, speaking of new releases...I got the Big Head Todd, the God Street
Wine and UTTAD all on Tuesday, and I've been listening to them non-stop
and I think that UTTAD is really good, but it will never replace vintage
Dave. I do like how Dave is mumbling less and so you can understand what
he is saying, but in the same token, it takes away the mystique of
wondering just whatt it is he said. As for BHT and GSW, I like them both
alot. I think the new BHT is more upbeat than their last album, and
it's based on a single theme which is a neat touch. As for GSW's latest,
I'm really quite impressed. This is their first CD on a major label
(Geffen), and they recorded in a studio (their last CD was live), and so
in a lot of ways the transitions in their songs are similar to what DMB
went through with the release of UTTAD. So, I would get the BHT and GSW
CD's if you don't already have 'em. And I'd like to know how good the
new REM one is...

A couple of questions

MCCOWAN97@alison.sbc.edu Thu Sep 29 20:22:22 1994

#1 Who is Anne? Just curious
#2 Is anyone willing to send me tapes? Any good show - it doesn't matter. I
have only one (yes I am new at this) The one I have is last New Years Eve.

Also - a response to the Doobie Bros. question - my roomate is convinced that
it is the Bee Gees. She is not sure why she thinks that though.

Please e-mail me back about the tapes.

I am very interested in the Floodzone show tapes. If a tree does get formed
for distributing tapes of it, place me on it. I have many friends here at
Virginia Tech and abroad that have tapes and we are very interested in
getting more and distributing the few we have. Thanks and the album release
party at The Crossroads was pretty good.

anne was dave's older sister.
she was killed (in jan or feb, i think) while dmb was doing colorado tours with
the samples.

i care not to elaborate on the curcumstances of her death. it's a painful
story. regardless, the child in dave's arms on the back of teh cd is one of
her children (both of who were orphaned after she and her husband's death) whis

album, but being a college student... 14.50 is pretty hard to come by.
I am not familiar with Worrell's music. Has anyone heard her or her

The Shannon Worrell album blew me away...

Some woman from channel 29 was interviewing Dave on the UVa ampitheatre
after that awesome soundcheck. She told him to please try to give full
answers to questions, and not just answer with yes or no. To which he
replied (more or less):

"How does it feel to have your first major label release out?

Anyway, Carter couldn't stop going on about his new drum set...
I had to admit it kicks pretty hard. The soundcheck at the ampitheatre
was the first time he'd gotten to play it...

Anyway, on spotlight, everything Wade said was quite correct, but I don't
expect he'll get around to rewriting it soon (much to my dismay), mainly
because it's been gone a looong time, people have been saying he's planning on
redoing it for a while, and basically because he didn't seem to be in so
much of a hurry to revamp it.

Hey everyone!

goldberg@rochgte.fidonet.org Fri Sep 30 09:28:10 1994

Hello everyone! I new to this awesome list and I wanted to introduce my-
self. I am from Rochester NY and started to listen to the DMB early in
the summer. I went to see them play when HORDE came to Darian Lakes
near Buffalo. While the concert was awesome, not many people heard him
play. He was first to play and only a handful of people were there
listening. That was real good for me however! Because nobody was
there, a real ape of a security guard told me and my friends we could go
up front, close to the stage. We are pretty poor so we only had shitty
lawn seats. Since that concert, DMB has really taken off here in
Rochester. All you hear in my school parking lot is DMB, and it
ridiculously easy to get bootlegs. Everyday is "Dave Matthews Day" at
my school! You wouldn't believe how fast they caught on since August!
rare stuff, but I really don't know for sure. I have one bootleg that
was recorded at Woodberry Forest School, a private prep school in
Virginia. Dave played at a private party and a awesome recording was
made. I happen to friends with a student there, and he set me up with
copy. Is this bootleg rare? I have no clue. I would be more than
happy to trade. Rusted Root just came last weekend to the Horizontal
Boogie Bar in Rochester. I was lucky enough to get tickets a week early
because they sold out both shows they played. They were absolutely
amazing! If anyone has any tapes of them, let me know! I'm also
looking for any God Street Wine tapes. They are coming in a week or so
and I plan on seeing them. Does anyone have any Tim Reynolds tapes? I
am looking for any good tapes that have any version of "Stream" on them.
I've been babbling for too long now, so I'll won't let you suffer any
longer! email me at Goldberg@Rochgte.Fidonet.org
if you have anything to trade!

Seth :)

I'd spend the money if I were you...Shannon Worrell plays beautful

worth the $14.50.

She sounds a LOT like Shawn Colvin...

DAVE HAS WRITTEN A NEW SONG

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Fri Sep 30 12:07:40 1994

when derryberry & alagia come to your area -- GO. go because they are
wonderful musicians, go because they play a few dave songs here and there
(they played a sick dancing nancies last night and a satellite), go because
they write great music, go because they're the nicest guys you'll ever meet,
and go because they can hook you up with great dave matthew's news!

so, since i was with a dave authority/expert, i picked alagia's brain a bit

"we [minaretsnetters] heard that you and dave were supposed to write some
songs around christmas but did that fall through after dave's sister died?"

worked a lot of things out in the studio. he wrote four or five new songs
around then.

here about a song named, "doobie" or something? anyone heard of this?] dave
just wrote a song _ONE WEEK AGO CALLED "LET YOU DOWN."_

[this is where i began to lose my mind. we're standing outside our student
center next to his car. he reaches into his glove compartment and pulls out
a tape.]

ago? this is a preliminary mix-down from the 24-track digital recording i
made onstage...

so he plays the most incredible-sounding tape i've ever heard and plays me
the "lie in our graves" from the show, as i told him that this is my favorite
dave song.

several other very interesting things came up and they also let me tape their
set off the soundboard (which came out sounding incredible -- write if you'd
like to trade for a copy, though it's only about an hour... hell, just send
me a tape if you want a copy).

i'll send along more exciting info i learned from these guys as i remember it
-- what excitement!

jimi thing, ftp'ing and 135 minutes...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Sep 30 13:00:50 1994

jimi thing and listen to the music?
maybe not.
as far as songs sound alike, i think it's easier to look at the band
identical chords. (and look at the middle section of antelope and
runaway jim by phish. talk about redundancy...)
but jimi thing and listen to the music? i can't see it.

as far as ftp'ing goes, most ftp sites, and i doubt phish.net is any
different, there's a limit on the number of users allowed direct
ftp access at any given moment. for uwp it's 30. so obviously spots
are going to be in high demand. try early in the morning when you
think most people are asleep. it me seem silly for me to tell everyone
to this, because then everyone will try early in the morning, but it
usually works.

and as for a 135 minute set with no break, first, that's not really that
much shorter than a two set show of old (roughly 150 minutes after encore).
and most of phish's sets this summer were 70 minutes long, making for maybe
165 minutes after encore. also, how is uva amphitheatre in terms of being
logistically sound for the band to take a 20 minute break, and lastly,
those bands where the fans get so intent on being near dave that the people
in the front row were getting crushed, as i would understand it, which may
have led the band to cut the show short in the interests of said fans.

Getting Close to Dave

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Fri Sep 30 14:09:32 1994

Rick made a point about people crowding up close to the stage, even to the
point of crushing and being crushed. This is a disturbing trend. When the
band played out here in Vail a month or so ago, it was in this pretty cool
little ampitheatre. It was G.A. but there was seating in the front. We
got there pretty early and got seats in the 1st and second row - everything
was cool for the first two bands (Jackopierce and Freddy Jones) but then
before DMB, people started to move in front of the front row of seats (i.e.
in the flower beds that seperated the stage from the seating. By the end
of the show the thing had been leveled. Kind of pissed me off, it wasn't
like there was no other space available...

Anyway, if these people are such big fans that they must be up front, why
don't they make an effort to get there earlier? I also had a number of
people crowd in off the isles in front of me and my friends, who then
turned as if to apologize and said "But these guys are from my hometown..."
As far as I know, this doesn't count for much, we all bought the same
ticket. Or have I been missing out on special seating when I go to se Big
Head Todd or Leftover Salmon, or the Samples somewhere outside of Colorado.
Sorry to rail on, and it isn't just the DMB. Had a bunch of obnoxious
people but in front of us during soulhat las weekend who said they were
from Austin (soulhat's hometown) and it brought back bad memories.

Adios, I promise to be in a better mood soon,
Jason

Raleigh set list--last night

ivans@acpub.duke.edu Fri Sep 30 14:58:44 1994

Here's the set list from the concert in Raleigh last night. It was
wonderful. Dave really has a lot more freedom to play more material with

Best of What's Around
Satellite
Dancing Nancies
Warehouse
What Would You Say
Song That Jane Likes
Lie in Your Graves
Pay for What You Get
Jimi Thing
Tripping Billies
Minarets
Typical Situation
Two Step
Ants Marching

Rhyme and Reason
Recently (awesome extended version)

My friend Jeff and I tried to compile this list in order on the car ride
home, so the order of songs may not be completely correct, but these are
great lead-in from Two Step to Ants Marching and they jammed on Recently
for like 15 minutes. It was a real rockin' show.

9/30 Roseland Ballroom - A Study in SOMETHING...

NebuIous@aol.com Sat Oct 1 01:02:31 1994

...I'm just not sure what yet.

The show.

I don't have a setlist, but I have a reasonable guess at what went on... the
beginning, end, and encores are all in right order, but the rest...er...i'm
probably missing a few

Best of What's Around
Satellite (more on that later...)
What Would You Say
Rhyme and Reason
Dancing Nancies
Jimi Thing
Warehouse
Typical Situation
Pay For What You Get
Say Goodbye
Minarets
Recently (w/ super cool percussion guy &)

Now.

The crowd.

Disgusting. Simply disgusting. It made me sad to be a dmb fan... first of
all, the pushing and shoving was particularly violent and mean spirited
tonight, people were moving around in huge packs through the middle of crowds
very slowly...

And now to Satellite. Oh god Satellite... I should have known when he
started playing the riff (at 1/10th speed) and the place simply erupted in a
huge burp of applaus and shrieking. Then the lyrics came in. That was the
first time I noticed the girls...

7..8...9...10 of them! Somewhere in the 12-14 year old range.

"SAAA-TA-LIIIIIITE IN MY EYES!!!!! WOOOOOA! LIKE A DIAMOND IN THE SKY!!!!
!HOW I IWO)OWOW NOLFJWNEO WONDER!!!!! AYEEEE!"

oh god it was 10 times worse than it sounds. besides that, there was the
shrieking after every line... i don't want to sound like a guy that gets
easyily annoyed, but this was as close as it comes to a realization of a
nightmare (I remember telling clare about a bad thought i had that involved
ants marching, giants stadium, and a bunch of shrieking girls).

as far as DAVE, it was good. it wasn't a show that had anything
spectacular... nancies had a super awesome wacky cool dave intro, typical
situation really was lackluster... they skipped the hits, and basically did
the album version with a worse flute solo... pay 4 was pretty good, those
girls i mentioned go (really loud of course)
satangirl #1: "I DON'T LIKE THIS SONG!"
satangirl #2: "YEAH IT'S GOT NO BEAT!"
satangirl #1: "DAVE IS CUTE WHEN HE SINGS!"

grrrrrrr.

i loved rhyme, it's growing on me, best sounded a bit empty, i think wwys
should go back to the old jam, everything else was pretty much great.

sorry for the length.
well, no i'm not.

Ok - I took everyone's advice and I went out and bought the new Dave

thought it was totally cool!

I've already listened to it three times, and I faxed in an order for
their other two CD's. Thanks for exposing me to this great band!

BTW - I finally recognized them after hearing the first song, which I
have heard before on the radio but never knew who it was...

Hey guys

peterke3@wfu.edu Sat Oct 1 01:37:25 1994

Hey all... ive been reading this list since early summer- you all are a
great group of people. Im pretty bummed right now.... sighh..... i used
to see DMB all the time in 92-93 at trax, and would have loved to go see
them at the amphitheater at my alma mater, but alas am in jail (i mean
grad school) here at Wake Forest (NC sucks. If anyone lives in this grand
state, please tell me what there is to do in Winston Salem) Anyhow, im
depressed and wanted to vent my frustrations... you all have been great,
ive been experiencing DMB through your colorful posts.

I have a tape (from trax i think) from sometime in early 93 (i think)
and was wondering if anyone could give me a date... some of the things he
1)"my cousin is here tonight, neither of us are named nancy, but this is
Dancing Nancies"
2)he does a slow version of Two Step and before beginning talks about
Peter Greisar (sp?) and how he was "Stricken... with something. Nothing
is missing.. this song would normally feature Peter Greisar but today it
features..ME uhoh! This song is called Two Step yeah..."
any ideas?
thanks for listening to me bitch!

Another comment on the Roseland 9/30 Show

mfb14@columbia.edu Sat Oct 1 02:56:39 1994

I'll admit to being biased, but the Halloween encore was kickin'.
Carter's solo was one of the best I've heard him do . . . he carried me
through waves of, well exctasy is a strong word, but man--he was on fire.
Doesn't ANYONE have lyrics to this most intense of songs?

I thought the set was solid considering that this is the first time I
ever saw 'em play to a crowd this size. I thought all went well.

Saw a girl pass out in the front row and get hoisted up, over, and around
by security. Any news on her health?

And finally, I didn't hear anything about Dave's sister dying. What's
the story?

Ciao.

Free phone calls to Capital Hill

mfb14@columbia.edu Sat Oct 1 03:13:24 1994

---------- Forwarded message ----------

hey, tell all your friends............

You can call Capitol Hill to tell your Congressperson or Senator what
you think AND charge the religious right for your call.

Far-right Traditional Values Coalition leader Rev. Lou Sheldon paid for a
toll-free number so anti-gay supporters could call congressional members
and express their political views.

Re: Getting Close to Dave

LauraL4523@aol.com Sat Oct 1 11:02:29 1994

Rick made a point about people crowding up close to the stage, even to the
point of crushing and being crushed. This is a disturbing trend.
--------

getting pushed around. I got there late, due to getting entirely turned
around on the Beltline (what a crazed road!). I was kinda sad I wouldn't get
a good spot on the floor.

for From Good Homes. I liked them, will have to give them a better listen
soon. Once their set ended, I went to get a beer, and by the time I came
back, I could see there was no point in getting back to the front. Couldn't
breathe in that crowd up by the stage, let alone dance. I stood off at the
edge on the left side, and had a blast; lotsa room to move :)

the stage when the room is so small to begin with. I still felt "close to
Dave," even on the edge of the crowd.

What we don't need is people getting trampled one of these days.

Take it easy,
-Dash :)

Re: A Horde Net Post that made me wonder

bmking@mail.wm.edu Sat Oct 1 11:35:33 1994

This came across horde.net.
---------- Forwarded message ----------
BTW - I finally recognized them after hearing the first song, which I
have heard before on the radio but never knew who it was...

        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
        particularly check out this part.

Yeah, I saw that and was wondering too. I think he might mean Recently,
which got a lot of airplay down here at least.. so much, it's one of those
'skips' on the cds now.. don't think he would mean bowa, since I doubt
that's gotten any airplay.

who knows.. i just hope that dmb concerts aren't going to turn into moshing
bt concerts of occasion. dmb is a lot slower and not nearly as hard, which
is a _good thing_. (tm) but, who knows.. plaster a band all over town, and
just look at the weirdo's you'll attract. :)

Chicago 28 October

jbliszt@midway.uchicago.edu Sat Oct 1 15:19:50 1994

Hi all,
Chicago?? I'm very excited--I haven't seen the band since the summer Horde
shows. Tix are only $7 (aah to be back at the Eastern Standard for FREE).
How does that compare to elsewhere? A friend of mine in Boston said he was
paying $20something

ravings of a madman

bmking@mail.wm.edu Sat Oct 1 19:44:25 1994

The spin doctors played at my school the other day, and a review of the
concert came out in yesterday's paper (I didn't go). Being that the sd's are
compared a lot to bt, and there's a lot of worry about dmb becoming big, I
thought I'd try to theorize on this..

There's been talk on the bt net about people going to see the sd concert only
for gin blossoms (we also had cracker & another here), then leaving before
the sd's came on. The article mentioned this happened en masse the other
night, and that a lot of people weren't happy when the sd's played songs they
didn't know...

could bands making it big be causing their own demise? I mean, with bands
that take the song and jam and be creative in that horde kind of way, when
they make it big, the people going to their shows don't want that, they want
the top-40 single they know. so, the band changes accordingly. call it a
loss of integrity or whatever you'd like, they're just playing to their
audience (which dmb does all the time; slow or fast..).

I don't know.. the article just spoke about people being all fussy when they
didn't play album cuts and a couple friends of friends were upset when they
played two princes too fast.. when to me, playing songs faster or slower is
the sign of a dynamic band (at richmond, va horde BT played like lightning,
and it was incredible)..

anyway, just rambling on in williamsburg, va. (where the phone never seems
to ring...) :)

steve did all but the last Pogues albums on island. for those who
haven't heard the pogues they are an interesting group from ireland that
combind traditional irish folk and "old" punk rock (the old late 70's
british punk). the linear notes for the album essential describe it as
mixing the cheiftans and the sex pistols. I don't know i'm just

Spin Doctors, prices

ivans@acpub.duke.edu Sun Oct 2 15:27:23 1994

I don't know if you can dare compare the Spin Doctors to the Dave
Matthews Band. IMHO the Spin Doctors are a lot cheesier and they are not
half the performers that DMB are. Even if Dave and the gang make it big,
they can't lose that wonderful aura you feel when they perform. DMB is
more of a Phish, Grateful Dead type band, you can never really tire of them.

As for prices, I paid 10 bucks for the show in Raleigh, and around 15 for
the show I saw at Brown's Island in Richmond this summer. Let's hope
these prices don't go too high with Dave's future success.

RE: Song ?s

smm7k@sdlsun2.ee.virginia.edu Sun Oct 2 18:00:37 1994

In response to Greg's questions, this is what I've come up
after relistening to some old Dave stuff that I have from a
show at Trax, May 26, 1992:

mouth and all..."

According to the dub that I got, this song is "Blue Water". I'm
not sure if this is the offical DMB title, but it songs as
good as any other. I haven't heard this tune done since
summer of 1992, so I don't know where it is now.

when we fight over our borders, then we, our brothers and sisters divide,
tell me why is it so"

Yet again, I'm unsure if this is the right title, but I
believe Dave has referred to this as "People, People". Again,
this song seems to have disappeared into nothingness, which is
quite a shame.

For all who are interested, I'm new to minarets, just found
out about it a couple of weeks ago. I've been listening to
DMB since early May, 1992 (first show for me at Trax).
However, since they've left the C'Ville scene in pursuit of
greatness, I have to admit I'm a little bit behind the times.
Only saw them once this summer at Horde in Richmond and
caught first few tunes at UVA Amphitheatre. I've got 5-6
tapes with good music, although tape quality is questionable. I'd
like to work a trade if there are any takers. Of particular
interest is one with an ultra-first version of Warehouse (Dave
talks about cats scratching eyes out, lyrics are completely
different with same music). Also, I have a tape of Dave (with
occasional help from Boyd) in the studio, I think, just kinda
playing around with some tunes. Other stuff too from Flood
Zone.

Thanks for Minarets. I'm enjoying the catching up!!

A Week of Dave shows

PONDWAYLA@urvax.urich.edu Sun Oct 2 19:24:47 1994

This is my first post in a long time, but i wanted to give some feelings
this past weeks shows.

But, first...went up to Philly from Richmond and saw dave last night...
The show had some good points and was overall pretty good

Setlist- TLA, philly, 10/1/94

One Sweet World
Best of What's Around
Dancing Nancies
Warehouse
Say Goodbye
Satellite
Tripping Billies
JImi Thing
WWYS
LIe in our Graves
Lover Lay Down
Rhyme and Reason
Typical Situation
Ants Marching

There was no encore because they had to be off the stage by 11 and dave
said they would play straight through and screw the tradition of the encore
they ended up going over and playing until about 11:20

Unfortunately during Satellite, some very very drunk girl puked in front of
the tapers....luckily it didn't hit all the dats...she then continued to puke
during a HOT Tripping Billies and passed out on the floor....anyway... dave
had a nice jam in lie in our graves and dave and carter had a sweet jam in jimi
before r&r dave said" you mean to tell me that if you were getting fucked for
24 hours a day for a week and a half you wouldn't be happy?" carter then added afill in like after a joke on a talk show, carter then pumped his fist like
arsenio hall and dave said waht is this "the fucking arsenio hall show"
the theatre of the living arts was different and sold out around 800 people,
lots of high schoolers...

anyway, wednesday night was the show of the week, it has to go down as one of thbest two shows i have ever seen
maybe i should have gone to raleigh and roseland as well...oh well

mike glabicki (lead singer type) told me they'd be back in the area in about
a month, and they'd be playing with (ta dah) dmb. a few people around him
dropped their jaws and started drooling at the mention of dave, which kind of
frightened him I think, but that _is_ going to be one incredible show....

hope to see y'all again soon.

Horror stories at the front of the stage

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Sun Oct 2 21:44:30 1994

Ahh the stories we could tell.....here's my 2 cents

At an usually crowded Trax in, I think, spring of 94, I had somehow
secured a spot about 3 feet from the front, which meant I could never go
to the bathroom, but anyway, these multitude of girls, all fairly young
looking, were near the front. Before a song, this one girl yells "Dave I
wanna have your baby!" or something to that effect. He says "This next
song is about babies" and plays the XMas Song. It gets worse. These 4 or
5 girls, since they could obvuiously read the inside of R2T, new all the
words, and proceeded to sing most of it at the top of there lungs, esp
the "I want to be your girlfriend/wife" lines. This was topped off by the
fact that some girl on crutches thougth it was her right to barge all the
way up to the front.
Kinda makes me laugh listening to bootlegs when he talks about lack of
attendance, etc...anyways
