DMB in Texas?

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Mon Oct 3 00:48:43 1994

Hey-

Does anybody have any info on whether DMB has ever played anywhere in Texas??
I just moved to Austin from Williamsburg, VA, and as my good friend B. is fond
of pointing out, I'm very jealous of all those East Coast types that get to see
the great bands (esp. Dave and Rusted Root) on a regular basis. I'm suffering
from withdrawl down here. Just wondering if anybody had ever heard of them
playing west of the Mississippi. . .

Thanks!

Beth.

there's never a forever thing..

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Mon Oct 3 05:19:31 1994

yup. sorry everybody... i know my sub lines usually have absolutely nothing to
do with my post content.

a- 'blue water' is called 'blue water babbon farm'. the 'baboon farm' is added
to the song title when boyd does teh crazzy psycho wacked-out motha-fuckin
sanity-ripping ear schreeching dizzy-making fiddle. of course... i haven't
heard it without the wah peddle so i dunno if it'd be the same. but anyone who
has this song knows what i mean about the schizo violin solo. this song was
NUTS with peter... and the official definitively BEST VERSION of 'bwbf' is the
11.17.92 hands down.

rusted root kicks ass. i want to quit school and follow them on tour. i had a
mah-velous time at their show tonight (what little we did catch... but that's
blake or gray's fault. it's always their faults. always.) i love fun-dip.

'you can lose your head. you can lose your mind. you can loose your way.

lots-o hugs to everybody.
i need hugs... so i'm sending them out hoping i might get a few in return.

raleigh show, etc...

fostecl4@wfu.edu Mon Oct 3 09:30:41 1994

Just had to say how incredible the raleigh show at the Ritz was....
..HOWEVER..if anyone has ever seen dmb at Towne Point Park in Norfolk,
Va., we must bond over the extreme (cheapness) coolness of those shows.

"Satellite", I've never laughed harder....the crowds at concerts are
becoming a little young or trendy or something....more money for dave,
though. Ahh..the old days when you could just dance right before the
stage WITH feeling in your legs...
...can't wait for ZIGGY's in November 94...

If anyone has a tape from the early days at Trax or from a better than
incredible show...I'd love a copy...I'll send a tape or $$$$$ or whatever...
got to go to class......

OK, So Dave gets on stage, looks out at the SOLD OUt! crowd and says something
like, "when they told me we were playing here, I didn't think we'd fill up
half of it" and as if he was one of the New Kids On The Block, four thousand
12 and 13 year old girls start to scream. Dave could have said he was feeling
flatulant (which wouldn't have surprised me) and the girls would have screamed.
Ben was absolutely correct, the crowd (size and behavior) was nauseating.
Needless to say, I'm psyched to see the dave element im used to tonight.
As for the show. First, Halloween was unreal, sick drum solo and all of the
nervousness Dave looked like he felt in front of such a big crowd was screamed
out in that song. Some critical notes, ever since this summer, it seems like
the band is rushing through songs a little. I was listening to 3-23-93 yesterday
and it occurred to me that Dave didn't come anywhere near the extended jams
that he used to. Best started and ended before I knew it. The other thing,
and I guess this is expected with a major label album, but does he HAVE to
play all of UTTAD every show, I mean he's playing 9-10 songs off of it per
night like it's required or something. Now I love the album, and I love to
hear him play any song off it, but I feel bad that theres only 4 slots left
in a show for 2 Step, Granny, Graves, Quick Lay, all of R2T and everyother
kicking song. well, enough for now, see you tonight at Toad's.
PS Roseland was a great performance

They did NOT open with #34. They opened with that amazing intro that
they always play before One Sweet World. Does anyone know if this has a

their sweetest tune, so I always label Intro - One Sweet World.

the guitar to the whole band kickin in on it...but IMHO its definitely a

this intro has ALWAYS been the intro to one sweet, they just jam
a bit during it now...the band left that intro completely OUT of
R2T, which pissed me off a lot...ohwell...

Does anybody out there in Dave land have a live version of Satellite
Sun will shine
No matter what I do
Sun shines bright now with you
What a wonderful thing for you to do
Moon shine bright
Reflection in your eyes
(and so on...)
I have a demo tape of just Dave but I would love to land a live version.
There is another song on this random demo tape that I don't think they
play anymore live because the song was backed mostly by Peter's piano.
Seven tumbling oceans surround
The ground that I dance upon
Black and white and the rainbow five
Colors in my eyes control
People, people
What are we doing in here
Oh people
When we stand over the ocean (chorus)
I think the name of the song might be "The Ocean" and would to hear
from anyone who has a live version of it.

Intro to one sweet world or #34

PONDWAYLA@urvax.urich.edu Mon Oct 3 16:48:24 1994

yes, blake, i would recognize #34, thank you for pointing that out.
Ben(jamin) thanks for posting and stressing the truth about the opening
song at TLA. I listened to my tape just to make sure and it was the
intro to One Sweet World that they have played off and on for a long
time. To everyone who didn't have the chance to catch the soundchecks from
this week, i am sorry, because that is when they were playing #34...
and yes, it sounded great, and it lasted at times over 10-15 min.
(as wade can point out from uva, one hot jam) anyway, i do not think

they will ever open with #34, or for that matter ever play #34 live
again, especially without lyrics...plus it has too much meaning with
miguel and the days playing it with peter like 3/17/93(i think) at
the miguel valdez benefit shows...pick up that tape and you will find
out why the song means so much and is so rare to hear at a live show
i do like the instrumental #34 on the cd, nice touch, but a much better
song in its old days

i guess i am getting fed up with all the crap on the net now, and the
questions and i just want to add my $.02 worth like everyone else.
i just couldn't stay quiet anymore... there will be more to come in the
future...

For the few of us that were around close to the beginning of minarets,
have you noticed how things have changed? just wondering...

I've been subscribed to MINARETS for only a couple weeks and have just
been sitting and reading.Finnally, I've decided to throw some things out
regarding some of the more commmon discussions.

Instead of complaining about the lack of Boyd on UTTAD we have to understand
that for the first time we get to hear what this outstanding group of
musicians can accomplish on a major label studio recording.
After repeated listening I think that most would agree that on
UTTAD we get to catch our first glimpse of Boyd as a VIOLINIST
instead of the fiddler that we all know and love.

As for this fear of commercial success,if we all know ourselves that the
integrity surrounding this band will exhist regardless of whether they are
on MTV or not than we have nothing to worry about

Would you like to play, with a fool holding hands with a one-eyed jack
of spades?

ST. Louis!

jbg2@cec.wustl.edu Mon Oct 3 18:28:15 1994

To any netters in St. Louis, I found out Dave is gonna be at Mississippi
Night Friday, Oct. 21. It's an all ages show and there's a $5 cover
charge. Rusted Root will be opening up for them. You should probably
get there early-with all the posts I've been reading lately, I'm gonna be
prepared for a sell-out. Unfortunately, there are no advance ticket
sales, so I plan on getting there well before when the doors open, which
I believe to be 8PM.

through October 92: +30 songs
through October 93: about 3 new songs--granny, rhyme and reason, say goodbye

what about doobie thing and heathcliff's? plus christmas song is post oct
92, and halloween is kinda stuck in between these two categories.

through October 94: 0 new songs.
next person to see Dave, please tell him to get off his ass.

--kerry
but here's where i agree with you. let's say we include the ever so elusive
'old mother' and the non-existant (and i really mean non-existant. i don't
know anybody who has actually heard it) 'little monkey in a crowd.' let's
also say we include all of his covers, which i believe includes something
like 7 if we include sweet home alabama and me & julio.

let's do a little math here.....30+3+ oh... maybe 10= roughly 43 songs in
his __entire__ setlist. rotation boils down to maybe half that. what's
all this amount to? repetition. and i mean serious repetition. i noticed a
setlist a coupla posts back with no ants. ASTONISHING!!! when was the last
time any of us saw that happen?

what i feel like i'm saying here is that-- yes, you can get kinda sick of dave
band. with maybe 60 hours of dave tapes, the only song of these 43 i don't
have are 'drive in, drive out', the two obscure songs i mentioned in my first
paragraph, and the cover of the samples' 'nature.'

dave really needs to write some music, and i think he should play some of that
music so that the people who like him so much don't get sick of him.

or grateful dead _at all_. they are going the way of rem. not that i don't
like rem, but they are the sort of band that plays a show for the audience that
is there to hear it, not for themselves.

i think that if dave keeps going on the tangent he's on, he's going to keep
playing the same shows, over and over again, because he wants the audience
to hear certain songs, not because he wants to play certain songs. and if
the audience is different in every town, then dave can play the same songs
over and over again. why do you think he cut the intro out of not only
one sweet world on r2t, but tripping billies as well? to make them more
palatable.

also, maybe someone could tell me if last tuesday's jimi thing was over
20 minutes long. i highly doubt it.

now, i'm not trying to say any of this is bad, i'm just trying to point it
out. people are going to start getting annoyed at setlists, and i really
don't think that they are going to vary too much any time soon. if dave
is really headed towards the phish movement, we'll see a really sick mooshie-
minarets--blue water within the next two weeks. or a tripping billies encore
with an intro where daves screaming puts both halloween and rhyme and reason
to shame (wheredya think he channeled all that energy before he wrote hallween
or r+r). but i'm not going to count on it, and therefore won't take the
chance of driving 500 miles to see them in hopes of seeing the one song they
haven't played in a while, because they won't. i'm not going to stop listening
to them because of all this, but i'm not going to put out a concentrated
effort to go see them live, when i've seen the same show before (regardless of
whether it was with 300 other people in an off night at trax or whether it
was with 15,000 other people at a crowded amphitheatre).

another quick note on the faq...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Oct 3 19:13:05 1994

hopefully one night this week i'll be able to sit down and do some
serious work on updating the faq. when i'm done, i'm posting it, so
that everyone who's asked for it in the past week (which far, _far_
outnumbers the number of people who have asked for it in the past
year), will have their own copy. if i try to send it out to each
new person individually, it would take me at least a coupla weeks,
because it takes a few seconds to send out a file that big, and
a few seconds is generally all i have, meaning about 3 people a day
would get it. so keep an eye out. it's a hard thing to miss, and
should take up an entire digest, at least.

The point that a lot of people have made is that the band has to some
extent ALREADY given up the tasteful experimentation and originality that
they had until relatively recently.

Perhaps we could do a little statistical analysis of the setlists since
last Tuesday night? I'll get back to you all.

Sorry for being all salty but . . . that's the truth, Ruth.

yes. I saw DMB two nights at the Georgia Theater in February and I don't

Starting a DMB newsgroup?

rk3e@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Mon Oct 3 20:42:04 1994

Hi,
like alt.music.dave-matthews-band or something. While Blues Traveler
and Phish newsgroups have some discussion of DMB, we thought it would
be cool to have a strictly DMB newsgroup. We are relatively new to the
internet, though, and are a little daunted by the whole starting a new
newsgroup thing. We'd be willing to look into it and give it a try
if people on minarets are in favor of it and will use it. Is there
any problem anyone forsees? Our reasoning is that the newsgroup format
is alittle more accessible and user friendly. Also, if any internet
veterans would like to help us out or just give us advice, we'd
appreciate it.

Personally i think dave is a perfectionist..... it seems to me he has some
songs but they haven't reached a point where he feels comfortable playing them
in front of 300 people yet.....

i agree thought that he needs to vary setlists....maybe even keeping the same
songs but jam them long like 20 minutes long so in a set he gets half the songs
then they can do cool stuff like play star wars as an intro and stuff....
they need to do more covers imho and do them their own way...

Dave a perfectionist? Comfortable playing an unfinished song in front of
three hundred people? He did just this every Tuesday and Wednesday night
forever. Half of the fun of seeing DMB play (for me anyway) was seeing
songs evolve from Dave playing them solo, making up words as he went
along (if you hear any words you like, make sure you write them down and
give them to Jeff, our soundman...) Watching as each band member found
his nitch in the groove...

Granted, times have changed...The band is more professional, we might not
see Dave come out and do a bunch of songs solo. I'll miss it.

A few things

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Tue Oct 4 01:00:17 1994

recording and listening to the new song ("Let You Down"), he was hopping
around and dancing and said to John that they should get this one out soon
"on vinyl" so who knows, maybe he'll go crazy and release a single of new
material that isn't on his album. Or maybe RCA would be too anal and not let
him do something silly and rash like that. Still, I want the song. He needs
to at least play it live.

Also, I asked John about that intro to One Sweet World and he said that it
was going to be another song (by itself) but that Dave never really finished
it and it would up just being the intro to OSW. It's a great progression
because it modulates in the middle from D to B (as I recall -- verify,
anyone?) and that also makes it a real bitch to solo over (which is why Leroi
does it and not Boyd).

Okay, that was the tip of the iceberg, that little comment there about Boyd.
Gotta' open the can of worms again. Boyd has a) the most charisma of anyone
in the band and, b) the least talent. His solos are redundant, almost always
the same live, his songs are mediocre at best and -- this is the worst of all
-- HE ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE OUT OF TUNE. I just can't stand to listen to some
of my tapes, especially new ones because he's sometimes out almost a half
step. The tape Alagia played me from UVa was horrid -- the whole band
sounded like they were playing in different keys sometimes. Has anyone else
noticed this? Oh wait, I didn't mean the playing at UVa was horrid, just the
fact that it was so painfully out of tune. Dave and Stefan are usually in
tune together but that horn and violin are sometimes.... well, not.

Whoever just quoted those Dave-new-song stats is right on the money. He
really does need to get off his butt. Granted, I just heard that he wrote a
new tune but that is 1 for the year (that we know of). And, maybe it's just
me, but the setlists are pretty darned redundant. Certainly not anywhere
near the variety you'll see on the stage from that opher band...

Sorry for the mistake regarding #34 vs. OSW. Contrary to what someone
suggested, I was not trying to show anyone up. I went back and listened
to the tape and realized I had made an honest mistake.

I've been a DMB fan for quite a while but only recently subscribed to
minarets. Sorry my first post was such flamebait.

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Tue Oct 4 02:55:01 1994

sorry rich.. but
DAVE a PERFECTIONIST?!!?!?!

of those? i am under teh assumption that when you say 'perfection' you are
disregarding dave's zest to improvise lyrics and tunes and talk onstage.
'rhyme and reason'? looooooong evolution to become what it is now....
'drive in drive out'? still evolving.. not perfect yet, but perfect in every
version played so far... (can you follow the trail i'm leading everyone?)
'seekup'? now that it's lyrics are basically definitive it doesn't
necessecarliy make it perfect....

this isn't a phlame.. all who know this net know me and know i NEVER phlame...
but this is rather an informative musing on the nature of this particular post
(not this particular person.. who is a kind soul and roi lusts to pinch his
butt... hee hee 2/26/94)
too free-spirited and exploratory to just wait till a particular song is
'perfect' tillhe plays it... (all us old min.netters and fans know this..)
for a reason... whatever it is, i dont' care.. but variety never becomes
stagnant... and dave needs to add some spices to his pasta cause it's getting
kinda soggy and redundant..... (no, benjamin-fozzy-girl-bunny... _NO_ lemon..)

here's a kind've reminder to all the recent minarets.netters who've joined our
family... please make sure you double check queries you're sending in to the
net before you do so..... and be patient with us veterans.. we know you all may
not be as vintage about material/facts/tapes as us, but redundancy of certain
questions becomes.... well... redundant.. especially when it was answered only
days before in another digest.....
any comments/questions/ruffled-feather-responses/hugs/or whatnot
please be directed to the below address/addresses....

  Setlist- TLA, philly, 10/1/94

  One Sweet World
  Best of What's Around
  Dancing Nancies
  Warehouse
  Say Goodbye
  Satellite
  Tripping Billies
  JImi Thing
  WWYS
  LIe in our Graves
  Lover Lay Down
  Rhyme and Reason
  Typical Situation
  Ants Marching

They opened with #34, then One Sweet World.

They did NOT open with #34. They opened with that amazing intro that
they always play before One Sweet World. Does anyone know if this has a
name, or if it is just considered part of OSW?? I think that it might be
their sweetest tune, so I always label Intro - One Sweet World.

The song is called Route 2. They played it at the Lake Matoaka music
festival here at William and Mary last April. I have a sweet bootleg of it
that is 2nd generation soundboard.

'After Her' & 'People, People' Song ID

jcrother Tue Oct 4 10:13:06 1994

I don't remember who posted this but this first song is called, "After
Her" and, as far as i know, has never been played live.

The second song is called "People, People" and exists on some earlier
tapes--maybe early to mid-1992

Alex Crothers
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anybody out there in Dave land have a live version of Satellite
Sun will shine
No matter what I do
Sun shines bright now with you
What a wonderful thing for you to do
Moon shine bright
Reflection in your eyes
(and so on...)
I have a demo tape of just Dave but I would love to land a live version.
There is another song on this random demo tape that I don't think they
play anymore live because the song was backed mostly by Peter's piano.
Seven tumbling oceans surround
The ground that I dance upon
Black and white and the rainbow five
Colors in my eyes control
People, people
What are we doing in here
Oh people
When we stand over the ocean (chorus)
I think the name of the song might be "The Ocean" and would to hear
from anyone who has a live version of it.

Toad's setlist and other stuff

Best of What's Around
Song That Jane Likes
Dancing Nancies
Warehouse
Satellite
Rhyme & Reason
Say Goodbye
Jimi Thing
Pay For What You Get

No big surprises at all. Not even any little surprises. The crowds at DMB
shows continue to annoy me slightly- lots of people yelling for "Ants"
and discussing how cute Dave is. Oh well- At least I impressed a lot of
people during Two Step by teling them the song they were waiting for was
next :).
time. The band sounded great- possibly the best I've heard them live.
Granted, I'm a northerner who rarely gets a chance to see DMB- only 10
times or so, but I was still impressed. Some versions were a little short
(Jimi Thing wasn't even close to 20 min.), but some stuff sounded great.
The Watchtower encore had a little Roi solo that doesn't appear on any of
my tapes, and there were a few other small surprises in the jams for me.
Leads me to believe the band isn't heading down the REM road quite yet.
Granted, Phish they ain't, but then, they've never really tried to be.
Even if the setlist never changes, at least the songs do. Carter got in a
nice Jam before Halloween.
BTW- whats the progress on the FTP site? Just curious.
Clare- not too much drug use. Luckily- they allowed persons 21 and over
to leave and come back, and I live right across the street, and.... well,
you get the picture.
Bye for now- more wandering and illogical postings to come.

1) Is Tim Reynolds playing the rest of the Tour(he was not their last night)?
2)What is his relation to the band?
3) Any first week record slales stats out there. How about DMB vs. REM vs. BHT
4)Someone quoted an article on here claiming DMB was the Best Unknown Band in A
merica. What magazine was this? Does anyone else know of any other reviews

this favorable.
5) Any other really cool facts that might be good to include in the article?

to have the luxury of trading DMB bootlegs, but since I'm stuck here
in east buttfuck, I need your help! If any one out there is
interested in trading---your list gets mine. I am preferably looking
for older shows, but any will be great.
shows you what a studio can do to a great band. The quality is good,
but does not sound like the same as R.T.T. All in all, I think DMB is
still incredible. Whats this about DMB opening for Phish??? That
would be interesting to see live. I have several bootlegs of the two
bands playing together, but have never experienced it live.

Toad's Heaven

IBASSIN@WESLEYAN.BITNET Tue Oct 4 12:24:07 1994

Last night was the shit. The best Dave show I have ever seen. It's tough
giving the nod to a one setter compared to some of the all night 2 set shows
that I've seen him play, but the jamming and cohesiveness and energy of last
nights show left everyone at a loss for words.
One Sweet Intro-
One Sweet World
Best
Jane
Dancing
Warehouse
Satellite
Rhyme
Pay 4
Jimi
Say Goodbye
WWYS
Two Step-
Ants
-
Watchtower
Halloween
We all, crushed like sardines, watched with gleeful faces and complete amazement
as Dave and the gang tore up ultra extended versions of Dancing, Jimi, TWO
STEP! and Ants. Boyd was the best I've ever seen him, his violin strumming intro
to two step was a definate highlight. Carter blew everyone's mind, the intro
to halloween was just as kicking as it was Friday night, Although Friday's
night's version was equally unreal. Watchtower melted down into an awesome
mellow interlude and came screeming back up. I'm still haunted by Rhyme.
This was THE show, I cannot express the energy and musical interplay that
sent the whole crowd flying. Hate to do this, but if someone taped that,
I have 700+ hours to trade for it. Is anyone driving from the middletown,
Conneticut area to the Northampton show? I could use a ride. Thanks, Ian

While I agree with these points there are some others
1)The Dead sell out 3 nite stays at large football stadiums...
2)20 minutes of Dark Star or Maze can get kinda boring....
3)Dave could play different sets if he felt like getting the old stuff out..

My point is Dave could be a little miniature version, shorter jams (I
think Dave does a little more improv than those two shows) etc of Phish/Dead

Just my well meaning two cents.....

basically a solo song, but he didn't even play it when he and tim played at jmu
or the movie palace, c-ville...at birchmere? i really like this song....
does he have peter grieser, people-people type reasons for not playing it?

and what about doobie thing? has the band played it recently? (i haven't
really been paying attention to the million and half setlists that keep popping
up ... but i haven't seen it in a while...) when dmb played at jmu last dec
someone requested it during the soundcheck and dave remarked that he didn't
remember it. it took a while, but they finally ripped through a verse or two
of it.

can any of you fortunate people who drink and talk with dave shed any light on

Dave on Local News

jeg5s@faraday.clas.virginia.edu Tue Oct 4 15:14:33 1994

Haven't seen this posted yet, and I thought you all might be
curious.
Those in the area last Tuesday probably didnt see it because they
were already at the show.
Those not in the area, dont get local news.

On Tuesday, 9/27/94, near the end of the Channel 29-WVIR (local
NBC affiliate) Dateline News (circa 6:20pm?), a local reporter
interviewed Dave Matthews from a media stand at the top rim of
the area surrounding McIntire Amphitheatre at UVA, where DMB
played. It was very silly.

She noted that Charlottesville Mayor David Toscano (a wonderful
man) was to read a proclamation declaring it Dave Matthews Band
Day in Charlottesville, and asked Dave what he thought. Didnt
tape it, so I don't have the exact wording, but it was something
to the effect of, "Well, I didnt finish high school, so this is
all very surprising." She asked "what kind of show do you have
planned for tonight"; Dave laughed, smiled, and said, "Oh, I
don't know. A naked dancefest with Ollie North or
something?...No, we're just gonna get out there and do what we do
and see what happens." Then, continuing a *huge* grin, Dave
smiled to the side as the silly reporter wrapped up.

Wayland

phish.net. all the old timers sitting around bitching about how
cool things used to be. it's posts like this that make me think things
like "wayland, you're gonna vote for ollie, aren't you?"

just deal with it. when you start complaining about things you annoy
other people, which leads me to flame you for it, which leads to more
annoying things, etc, etc, etc. minarets has gotten bigger, just like
dave band has. with more people come some problems, and we should just
work with them to keep minarets a happy place. not the same place, mind
you, just a happy one.

and i'm trying to find time to rework it. i'm hoping to post it next
monday, and alex is looking into the feasibility of getting listproc

know everything don't have to flip through the entire thing to see what's
on the other side.

so let's open our arms as wide as clare's and give all the newbies a

I think Jimi Thing is a great example that Dave DOES improvise,
especially when playing with a guest (check out some of the Jimi Things
from this summers HORDEs, Warren Hayes makes Dave do some crazy shit)
Until December 93, David rarely even took a solo in Jimi (some
exception 1/19/93 somes to mind) I'll be the first to admit that I hate
that solo, but the song can still go anywhere, and it often does...

Cry Freedom? Don't hold your breath. (Re: meandermeander. . .)

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Tue Oct 4 16:27:37 1994

any particular reason why dave doesn't play cry freedom anymore? i know its
basically a solo song, but he didn't even play it when he and tim
played at jmu or the movie palace, c-ville...at birchmere? i really like
this song.... does he have peter grieser, people-people type reasons for
 not playing it?
can any of you fortunate people who drink and talk with dave shed any light on
 these momentary shadows of thought?

August 19, 1993. Wetlands. Dave attempts to start Cry Freedom. He
can't remember how it goes. Carter offers to help (you can hear this on
the tape-- "I'll help you Dave") and then they just give it up.

Sigh. . . . Another song resigned to obscurity.

Ok Ok so all in all it was a phenominal show. Does anyone know why TR wasnt
there? Is he going to be on the rest of the tour? Toads was really cool,

ummm...maybe because he isn't a member of the band???

Thanks Blake.

However, I may be responsible for this becasue on 8/31/94 I passed along
information from Carter that Tim Reynolds was going to be with the band
on their fall tour.

This has not happened.

I intend to ask Carter about this on Saturday.

don'tcha just love these questions?

bmking@mail.wm.edu Tue Oct 4 16:46:15 1994

hi guys. i was listening to a tape I have labelled as Van Ripers 1992, with
2 ants, 2 satellites, and 2 so much's on it, so i don't really know what it
is to tell the truth.. but, between I'll back you up and satellite at the
end of the tape (it's not labelled at all), is a song i've never heard before,
& couldn't find any reference in the lyrics faq and don't recognize a bit of
it.

it's dave solo (pretty sure..), and through the dylanlike mumbling all I can

[...]
you will lie down
you will soon lie down
the only way down
lay me down lay me down
[...]
i will leave destiny to chose which direction it is i'm going to
i will leave destiny to chose which direction it is i'm going to
[...]
for fear we will go away
most may most may leave this quiet playground
[...]

anyway, it's real faint, and all I can really make out are a lot of lie/lay
down's and the lines about destiny..

never heard it before, and haven't recognized any discussion about it, and
it's dave solo.. for some reason I remember hearing/reading about a song
called Lie Down, but that might be the mind playing tricks..

of lover on 5/5/92 WTJU.

Calm Down!

sholcomb@vt.edu Tue Oct 4 16:59:10 1994

I think a lot of people out there are a bit too demanding of Dave! get off
you butt and write more songs??? I don't think song writing is something
you can do like a 9 to 5 job. You don't just sit down and bang out a song
anytime you want to. Whatever happened to inspiration? I've always
believed that songs are special and should evolve naturally. You can't
force the creative process and that's something that makes it so beautiful
and special to me. The same goes with a long jam. That's something that
just happens. I don't think bands such as Dave sit down and say "we're
really gonna jam this one out for a long time." It just happens.

A lot of people out there are expecting Dave to do
this and that for them, such as write more songs and play more diverse set
lists (which also requires more writing or covers), while other people out
there are hoping the DMB doesn't go the way of Phish and the Dead and just
play for themselves and not the audience. Sounds like there's a
contradiction there. And who says that the Dead and Phish play only for the
crowd. I read an article where Trey said that he has thought about playing
or not playing songs just because he played it last night and some people
won't want to hear it twice, but he also said he tries to ignore those
feelings and play what he feels like playing. There's nothing wrong with
playing for the audience, either. Most musicians feed off the energy of the
crowd. The audience is an important part of a show. If they don't give a
shit about the audience, why don't they just stay at home and play in the
garage and make albums and never tour.

I got on this net so that I could hopefully hear more discussion about a
band. I got tired of reading the Phish digests and hearing people bitch
about stuff, like the Dead. Now I come over to this net and people are
talking down about the Dead AND Phish. Come on folks. Different people
like different music. Please don't put down someone elses's music just
'cause it doesn't speak to you. Maybe they aren't talking to you.

Anyway, that's my $16.475 on the matter. Hope I didnt' step on too many
toes, but I do hope I stepped on a few.

Avalon and OSW

taocon@mail.wm.edu Tue Oct 4 17:30:49 1994

People who were worried about DMB ticket prices going up really do have
something to worry about. Even though the face value of tickets is
relatively low, $13 for the Avalon, the Ticketmaster service charges threw
the price up about $6 more. Shitty. I tried going through the 1800TIXX
number, but they couldn't hook me up there. If DMB wants to keep prices
down, they've gotta find away around Ticketmaster. Easier said than done.

There's also been a lot of banter back and forth about what exactly the
name of the One Sweet World intro is. I have the same Lake Matoaka tape
with it listed as Route 2. But someone insists it's NOT Route 2. Any
consensus out there of what it is? We've established just what it isn't,
now can we get on to what exactly it is?! Just an into to OSW, or something
unique?

I'm going a long way for the Avalon show; Williamsburg to Boston. If DMB
shows have gone the way of NKOTB teeny-bopper, pre-pubescent, hormonal,
tasteless, tacky, and utterly obnoxious screaming little kids, I think I'll
have to issue some old skool beatdowns. Anyone else whos going to be there
wanna give a hand?

I sent this to the whole net so it could be checked for accuracy... sorry
to waste space.

Ok, so I saw the band last night and have listend to the disk, and now it is ti
me to write the article for Fridays paper so lots of people want to go into
Providence to see the band. First I need some ?'s answered. Since I didnt get a
 n interview, I can only ask you'll
 1) Is Tim Reynolds playing the rest of the Tour(he was not their last night)?

Not that I know of

2)What is his relation to the band?

Tim has his own band- TR3. Dave and Tim are friends, and OCCASIONALLY he
joins the band onstage. More often, he works with them in the studio and
plays with Dave in acoustic shows- there have been several of these.

 3) Any first week record slales stats out there. How about DMB vs. REM vs. BHT
    vs. GSW

The band's popularity has made them very inaccesible at shows- that is,
they don't wander in the crowd during the opening band, etc. I talked to
Jeff (soundboard guy) last night and he told me that the initial shipment
was 160,000, and these were selling VERY well. R2T sold 110,000 or so (?)
before UTTAD came out- sales will probably take off for that again.

4)Someone quoted an article on here claiming DMB was the Best Unknown Band in A
merica. What magazine was this? Does anyone else know of any other reviews

 this favorable.
 5) Any other really cool facts that might be good to include in the article?

Lots- just keep checking the internet!

 Thanks alot,
 Later,
 Mike

My contention is that it USED to happen (more than others on the list

WRONG. All I expect is that he and the guys will do it FOR THEMSELVES.
And I feel that they are not doing for themselves. They're doing for the
people who want to hear Tripping Billies just like they did it on R2T.
Sure it's nice to play a request for a fan every once in a while (they've
pulled some tunes out for people at shows I've been to), but I'm going to
see a band to see them do what THEY want to do, not what the idiot next
to me wants to hear. I want to hear Boyd and Leroi and Carter and Stefan
and most of all DAVE expressing themselves. If the way they do it is by
playing the same songs every night, maybe it's all the better for me
because I don't have to go traipsing all over the east coast to see
them. I can just see one or two shows and then go home, pop in the tape
whenever I want, and take comfort in the fact that wherever the band is
tonight, you all at one or another show are hearing just what I'm hearing
through my headphones as I read a book at my desk. Doesn't this sound
like it might get a little bit BORING? Yup. It does to me.

My main problem here is that more diverse set lists for the Dave Matthews

requires choosing more liberally from among the 40-odd songs in the realm
of possibility for this band.

Dave Matthews is a common interest between all of the great fans of he

I have a tape of 12-11-93, Williams College, where a song
labelled Route 2 leads into One Sweet World. Note- this is DIFFERENT than
the regular One Sweet World opening. Dave mutters some lyrics- sounds

too bad] and didn't get a chance to soundcheck. This mumbling is
basically the soundcheck. He talks about coming over a mountain in the

It's about 6 minutes long and is no part of One Sweet World. They stop
the impromtu(sp) soundcheck and then start OSW.

If Eric is still out there, he can probably elaborate since he was there.

yet more on dave and his songwriting...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Oct 4 22:06:59 1994

scott brough up points that any musician good or bad, different or
indifferent (whatever that means), or whatever...that songs aren't
something you force, they just happen. but if that's the case, why
is dave sitting down for interviews and saying things like "i just want
to write music until i explode." he's not writing music, he's only
playing it.

a lot of people originally got into dave band because
of his uniqueness. he provided something fresh to a pretty stale art
form, but now that he's decided to limit himself, whether consciously
or not, those people are getting bored. one of the reasons for
elaborate on all the new and intriguing things that come up; all the
different takes on the songs we like so much; all the anticipation of
seeing something we've either not in a while or not seen at all. but
where is that right now? now that i see that wherever i go in the nation
i'm going to see the same show, why should i sit around and listen to
everyone talk about how great it was. is there really a point to
discussing entire tours as opposed to individual shows?

"so, how was summer 95?"
"it was great! they played tripping billies, satellite, warehouse
"oh really? they did that same encore last winter. two tours in

and still, i don't mean any of this derogatorily to dave band. each
band has its own playing style. they have their own goals in mind, and
what other bands (oooooooh, there's that "other band" term we used
to see on that "other" net last year) have in mind may not be what
dave band wants to do. i say let's just watch and see what
happens. if they turn back into the live band that so many of us
originally lost our shit over, then more power to them (and us). if
they continue to appeal to these recent trends of studio pop sensibilities,
even _more_ power to them. if they come back to va again (and i have
money this time) i'll go check it out. but when they line up they're
dream venue such as a two night stand at the fox in atlanta, i'm not
going to trek across the country to see it. i doubt many other people
will, either.

i guess what my last 6 or something posts have been trying to say
is that dave band seems to be evolving in a direction that's different
from what brough me into them in the first place. so it's time to
let other people experience them for what they are and what they want
to become, which in my opinion is a studio band. as a joke, dave once
told me that his first major label debut was going to be titled "songs
that everyone wants to hear." i think it kinda fits. dave likes
appealing to people. god knows carter, leroi, and boyd do too. they
know that people like their music, so they're going to play that music
for those people.

enough of my rambling. i've been pissing off too many
people with my outspokeness now for two or three days, so i'm going to
try and shut up now and work on the faq.

Re: A few things

peterke3@wfu.edu Tue Oct 4 22:16:54 1994

Okay, that was the tip of the iceberg, that little comment there about Boyd.
Gotta' open the can of worms again. Boyd has a) the most charisma of anyone
in the band and, b) the least talent. His solos are redundant, almost always
the same live, his songs are mediocre at best and -- this is the worst of all
-- HE ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE OUT OF TUNE. I just can't stand to listen to some

Yes!!! I agree!!!!! i HAVE noticed this- I love boyd, but its not only
him- they all are often off key...even on the new album.

new tune but that is 1 for the year (that we know of). And, maybe it's just
me, but the setlists are pretty darned redundant. Certainly not anywhere
near the variety you'll see on the stage from that opher band...

I have one question-- Its been my impression that Dave has been on the
road non stop for a long time now... and we all know how TIRING travel
can be- even as a passenger in a long car trip i get exhausted... my
point being, when do you all suspect he has had the time and energy to
write all of these songs you all are demanding? Id love some new stuff
too, but the poor fella must get pretty beat.

Also- any word on the Ziggy's show in Nov? I went to that lovely show
that was cancelled (sigh...) and couldnt get to the Fri reschedule so i
am hoping to catch them this time around. I called Ziggys and they seemed
pretty surprised that i had caught wind of their impending trip to
Winston Salem (aka the armpit of NC). actuallly, the guy was darnright
pissed off. He said "how do YOU know?" and then told me they were still
working on it. Then when i asked for a possible date he said "WHY?!" "so
i can figure out if i'll be in town dumbshit!" anyhow, he would only tell
me 1st or 2nd wk of Nov... anyone got anyother news on this particular show?
thanks-Kristin

why can't we all just get along? Everyone on this net shares something
in common - they enjoy the music of the Dave Matthews Band. For everyone
who posts a message and gets ripped on, that is one person whose opinion
we may not hear again. Let's stop blaming things on the newbies, let's
phenomenon that is Dave, pleasantly.

NY and Philly and Ants...

dsagoll1@cc.swarthmore.edu Wed Oct 5 00:50:19 1994

I really don't understand these people. Ants Marching is the song that
got me INTO DMB. I told that to Leroi on Friday, and he said, "Yeah, I
think Ants is on the Philly setlist..."

And sure enough it was. And sure enough it rocked. Also, I'm sad to
say, the crowd-riding fools almost ruined it. Enough to get a "whatever"
shrug from Dave to the Band.

"Too much of a good thing CAN be a good thing...
Don't tell me you wouldn't be happy if you were gettin fucked 24 hours a
day... at least for a weekend."

Starting a DMB newsgroup?

budkee@unvax.union.edu Wed Oct 5 12:56:28 1994

Well, I'm not a huge contributor to the group and all, but I really
don't think that it should go usenet. In my view all usenet really
does is decrease the S/N ratio of the group.

Also the way the bt one is as an alt group it is not picked up by
nearly as many machines. In the usenet ehirarchy a rec group goes to
many places and from what I know they are very hard to get fo such
things as bands w/o A LOT of support. So basically you are still
leaving out a bunch of people and then the group gets diluted.

In the current format a "personalized" letter from alex goes out to
each new subscriber giving them information and some guidelines. With
usenet you really can't do that easily. And just wait for the DMB
sucks posts to come through.

The saga continues...

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Wed Oct 5 13:02:36 1994

Alex-very funny is this "Daze of our lives" or what!!

I recently read a post about Boyd being untalented and out of tune...
For me and many people I know, one of the many catchy aspects of DMB
originally was Boyd and his killer fiddle solos. The Ants solo used to
vary and had a great bluegrass/dueling banjos feel. To hear boyd's talent
listen to a tape of Blue Water, especially 11-17-92 Trax, 1-30-93
Zollman's W&L University, or 10-27-92 Trax (i think) His infamous wahwah
solos show his talent....

Unfriendly behaviour reminiscent of Pnet

@uvmvm.uvm.edu:MFOR8178@URIACC.URI.EDU Wed Oct 5 13:19:33 1994

Ok Ok enough already.
I am SORRY if I asked what the deal was with Tim.
I KNOW THAT HE HAS HIS OWN BAND(I have even had at one times 3 studio tapes TR3
did and a couple of live tapes, but did not care for the singing so I scrapped
them)
PLEASE STOP SENDING ME MAIL FLAMING ME FOR ASKING THIS.
AND ANOTHER THING(sorry for writting in caps, but I dont like have messages in
caps sent to me ;-) )
I AM NOT A NEWBIE TO THIS NET. I HAVE BEEN ON AND OFF SINCE THE FIRST MONTH OR
SO IT WAS STARTED. HAVE YOU? JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN
TO POST CONSTANTLY DOESNT MEAN THEY ARENT THERE(this is directed at one person
in general who shall remain nameless)

if not bigger than the majority of other performers out there. Becoming upset
because of an increase in mail is just not wise. This net has in the last week
become just like Phish.net was when I decided to unsubscribe. I dont (and I am
sure others dont ) want to waste their time searching through other peoples
bickering back and forth.
Thanks for your patronage

Sit back and Relax

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Wed Oct 5 14:02:34 1994

we DO go to school) while listening to an old personal favorite...Dave at
Zollman's Pavillion (W&L) 1/30/94. This is vintage...1 show...26 song
setlist...Peter! Need I say more? It was very nice to dust off the
oldies (especially cause we were there) and just listen for a while. I
have sadly not seen Dave play since opening for Phish in Lexington and I
guess the CD party before that, so it was cool and MOST memorable. Well,
just thought you all should try it if you don't already. In other words,
if you're bitching because they haven't played your favorite song in a
while, go dig it out of the archives and play it yourself. And to you
newbies, we old fogies will be more than happy to enlighten you on this
subject. Anyway, I have to get my butt preparing for the GRE'S (sorry
for the Cap's Clare, I had to shout) --I just love standardized tests!
Happy trails to those who are actually going to see DMB soon and me, well
I'll just be psyched to get to Trax once again on a Tuesday night to see
Jackopierce next week!

Peace...Katharine Adams

P.S. Umm, I couldn't help but notice that "Granny" hasn't come up
lately....it'll be nice to see if it's changed any if I ever get to a
show before I graduate.

To all those DMB fans from Pennsylvania who checked out the show at

by U2. But they were there and gave DMB apretty good review.

Also if you were there and no anything about the opening act

Re: DMB in Toronto and 3/23/93

campb_c@cs.odu.edu Wed Oct 5 16:50:35 1994

Oh BTW, does anyone out there know the name of the first song Dave
played in his acoustic set on Peter's last night - 3/23/93? And, Has it been
played again? Rick Thompson sent the show to me a long, long time ago and
entitled it...."Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors." Any words on this one (i.e.
 Rick)?

yep...that's the name. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong here Ricko...)
that some spacey hippie type came up with the name...it might have been
Chardy. It was my birthday, so I was pretty out of it too. Jeff or Alex
told me the name of the song was So Happy, but I like HHH better. It's
been played at least three time 3/23/93, 7/6/93 and ummmm...I'm at a lost
for the third one that i have. Here's the setlist as made up by high
trippy man, preserved by Rick.

DMB 3/23/93 TRAX Charlotesville, VA

Set 1 BIG LEAGUE CHEW

Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors ...thang!
Minarets March of the Rolly Polly Cane Toads
Best of What IS So Much 2 Say
Typical Dog won suite whirrled
Little Texas Tower snoitcelfer eurt
Let's Get a Beer
The Jumping Song
Granny Smurf
The Jimi...

Set 2 The band bids adieu to Peter

Recently Creaming from the Minarets
Rhyme and Reason Blue Radar Gun
Turtles, Turtles, and More Turtles Flipping Whillies
#34 The Pasta Warehouse

Clearing things up...

catherine... of course there was a smile on my face, i didn't mean
to put down newbies or discourage them from the net. we have to
remember that the more people on the net, the more the word spreads
the bigger dave will get...anyway, i believe that freebird at f-zone
in november that you are talking about is when i personally (in state
of intoxication) yelled freebird and boyd replied "Hell No!!!!" then
dave said "sweet home......i'm a bama" i do not think they played
any parts or tried to cover it

'everybody's happy, everybody's free' let's try to keep this in mind!

ROseland and how to digestify

JONICOTRA@vaxsar.vassar.edu Wed Oct 5 17:34:44 1994

Hey all.... i caught my first Dave show at the roseland.....While i have
a selection of dave tapes.... I have always missed them whent the came around..
But with a spot on the guest list(ie free ticket) who could pass it up?
I was not impressed with The Roseland Show.... it wasnt bad... in fact it
had its moments, but no mindblowing solos, no rare songs (these setlists are
way too repetitive) and too many screaming kids.... i mean I am 20 and i felt
OLD at that show.... who knows... maybe my aching knees and deafening ears are
to blame.... but anyway.... I have hard some mindblowing jams on tape... but
they just werent there live....

ok... the flood is too large... how do i make this list digestified ( i current
-ly receive each message individually and that is hell)
