Phish and DMB in Alabama

kartzman@sas.upenn.edu Mon Oct 24 23:05:45 1994

of us about the Jam- The Maker from last Saturday in Alabama? How did a
jam evolve into a slow one like The Maker? Was it preplanned or
spontaneous? Any info is appreciated. And if you've got the tapes, I'd
love to trade for them...

Could someone who was there (or who has the tapes) tell the rest
of us about the Jam- The Maker from last Saturday in Alabama? How did a
jam evolve into a slow one like The Maker? Was it preplanned or
spontaneous? Any info is appreciated. And if you've got the tapes, I'd
 love to trade for them...

   Ted Kartzman kartzman@mail.sas.upenn.edu

some cool rhythym stuff(and Carter tore up the funk). Then slowly, all
the members of both bands came out one at a time (Dave being last dressed
in an oversized sportjacket (David Byrne style). Jam included some Dave
speak over it. The jam slowly faded to nothin' but a few stray
notes..............then Fishman played the drum intro to Best of What's
ARound and then the whole stage went into a definitly preplanned The
Maker. Very cool.

DMB/WSP would have been cooler............

aboriginees

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Tue Oct 25 16:29:30 1994

another interesting origin for Dave's necklace! I must admit that I myself
have no real knowledge of this topic, but a friend of mine (who might be
reading this, but is pretty damn lazy and probably never subscribed) spent some
time as a foreign exchange student where he met a guy from New Zealand. The
guy had a necklace like Dave's and here's the story he had for it...... The
aboriginal native-types of New Zealand carve those out of some type of bone
which holds some sacred significance to them. Each one they carve is a direct
representation of the soul of the person it's intended for. The aboriginee
spends several days with the recipient and dcelves into his souls to create the
perfect shape. As I said, each one is unique. Now, I can't say for sure
whether or not this is true or complete steaming manure, but I think it's a
groovy story. Hell, maybe he bought it at a flea market!? Anyway, it's a
cool-ass necklace!
ps hey rick....since you seem so interested, when I come down to visit after
Christmas, I'll bring Alice along and introduce her to you! jp

Hello All.

* The Dave Matthews Band and Minarets.Net Frequently Asked Questions File.
* The Dave Matthews Band Chords File.
* The Dave Matthews Band Tourdates File.

These are all to my knowledge the very latest versions.

In order to retrieve them, anonymous FTP to netspace.org, and go into the
DMB directory. You'll find the text-files directory in there. The
graphics directory have some really nice pictures, too.

I too have the Dave tape with a live mix on one side and a studio solo
performance on the other side. I have it labelled as a TRAX mix for the
live mix. I don't know who put this tape together or when Dave recorded
the solo tunes, but I find it interesting that this tape is in
circulation, which means someone must have made the mix and traded it a
bit. All related info is much appreciated.

Rutabaga Studios is the name of John Alagia's studio. These acoustic
demos were done there in late 92...I'm trying to pin down exact dates for
the setlist file.

I don't know about side 1, but side two sounds like the Rutabaga demos.
Don't know what the deal is with the name, date or purpose, but Clare

First of all- yes its a church. Its called "Wait (the last name of some
dead guy i suppose) Chapel" and is on the Quad at wake forest u. Coming
from UVA (im a grad student here at wake) i too think this is a mighty
strange place to hold a concert... sigh.

and take the Kernersville Exit (Exit #206) onto GREEN 40 (you WERE on red,
white and blue 40 before). Go for another 10 or so, and take the 52/8 to
Mt Airy (North) exit. it is the FIRST route 52/8 exit. You will pass the So
Called winston salem skyline (do you detect a note of sarcasm in my
voice?) on your Left. Go for a few miles, and take the 2nd Univeristy
Parkway Exit. go for about 3-4 miles, and you will see a big water tower
on your Right, and the brick wall entrance to Wake Forest University.
Turn right into this entrance, and go down the hill, over a few massive
speedbumps, and you will see the Wait Chapel straight ahead. There you go!
Will the chapel be a good place? youre guess is as good as mine...

Hope this helps- Kristin

Re: give Rick some free time . . . FTP instead!

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Wed Oct 26 01:26:39 1994

Okay folks. Let me start out by saying that the below is meant not to be
a flame but as a way of assisting those of you who need the assistance.

I've gotten two pieces of mail this afternoon/tonight from people who
want to know about FTP. There are probably some other people who want to
know about FTP, and the below is advice for you too. In fact, my little
speech below can apply more generally. Let's say you've been hearing a
lot about the 'web' and 'mosaic' and all this stuff but you're wondering
what it's all about. Well, you can find out.

in importance to e-mail. If you don't know how to use FTP, that is okay.

Because you will be able to find out very easily.

How will you find this out? Not from me!

If there is something you want to know about the internet, you should
talk to the people at your school/business/access provider. There are
people who get PAID to help you. They are called system administrators,
or user assistances; they're also known by many other names.

What Alex and Rick and me and lots of other people are doing is providing
content for you all (like running the mailing list, maintain the FAQ,
maintaining the archives, whatever). However, we don't have the time (and
at least in my case the expertise) to teach you all how to use the
internet.

So, that said-- let's say you want to get the FAQ through FTP. What
should you do if you don't know what FTP is?

Ask someone at your site.

Re: Wake Forest Wait Chapel Show

djb@mars.gtcc.cc.nc.us Wed Oct 26 09:50:09 1994

Talking to Jay Stevens (owner of Ziggy's, guy who booked the show),
the reason the show is in Wait Chapel is the local coliseum was booked
for the date the band wanted to play in Winston, and the chapel was
the only venue available.

Talking to John Jolly (security manager for the Wait Chapel show),
there will be ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING of any kind inside the Wait
Chapel. However, you will be given a wristband, and will be able to
come and go. This rule will be strictly enforced. It seems that at
last week's Widespread Panic show, $80,000 damage was done to the
chapel by smokers, and they don't want to repeat the problem. If you
get caught smoking ANYTHING you will be immediately kicked out of the
show. No questions asked.

Anyone who needs a copy of the FAQ, mail me a request...

lucky to have caught the show in nashville on the 20th and spent the

old gibson chet atkins and a black washburn. the washburn dave said

Daves new guitar

sonfije0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Thu Oct 27 19:55:20 1994

Daves new guitar is most certainly a washburn. I saw also that the Gibson
logo on the neck of his Chet was covered with duct tape. Possibly he may
be getting an endorsement. Also, washburn does make fine guitars. They
are just known for being well priced. A-lot of people touring play them
now. Check out the Edwin McCain band from Charleston. I played his after
a show in Hilton Head, and it was very nice. P.S. they are a hot band.
They are about to go into the studio next month. JOHN ALAGIA is producing
the album. He and dave are similar, but do different things with their
bands. Check him out on the new AWARE CD, or write me back, I have some
DAT boots from this summer.

"Washburn" written on the head of Dave's guitar. Now, I do not consider
myself an expert on the guitar-production industry, but I find it unlikely that
Gibson would develop a new model that showcased the logo of one of its
biggest competitors. In short, I agree with the bloke from Kentucky.

Missing a fact in FAQ

mus4rlm@cabell.vcu.edu Fri Oct 28 11:54:35 1994

that jam with Dave there was someone left out. His name is Mike
Durham and he's played with DMB a few times and i believe he is also a
musical companion of Boyd's. There are tapes out there with him on
it. Mike is an incredible crazy jazz guitar player. fast...faster...
fastest...around these parts (Richmond and Charlottesville,VA) the
only person who touches him is our friend Tim Reynolds. Anyway, i
thought i had to do this guy justice in the Minarets world.
there is a tape where Dave introduces Mike and says he wants to take guitar
lessons from him after the show!........ a tape to look for is the after
HORDE jam with DMB in the summer of '93. The Samples jam with Dave as
well as Oteil(sp?) from Aqurium Rescue Unit. Oteil(bass) and Mike
Durham have a guitar dual and they F**&4#1! jam. Dave adds some of
his own language at times, too! i need to get the exact date to ya'll
tomorrow. i taped the show but my tapes came out bogus. there should
be some DAT's out there and i know someone taped it to a MINI DISC.
that would be a hot to find that one.
good ol' Nashville. thats the right place for him 'cause he's a sick
MoFo on the axe. it was also rumored that he was gonna play on
Remember 2... but something happened. more on that later.

Phish w/DMB offer

AHENNE@drew.edu Fri Oct 28 13:05:06 1994

my karma needs a little boosting right now, so i decided to post this here
offer. i know a lot of you like Phish, but may not have tapes, or maybe
you'd like to hear what Phish sounds like...so, i have a high quality copy
of the Phish concert in Lexington 4-20-94. DMB opened for them that
night, and came on in the second set to jam with them. it's a very sweet
jam": Phish starts out playing "You Enjoy Myself," and members of DMB join
in one by one, and suddenly Leroi takes off into "Somewhere Over the
Rainbow," taking the others along. great stuff.
so, i'm offering this show to anyone who's interested. i'd entertain some
trades, if you have something unusual or excellent, but mainly this is a
blanks-and-post kind of thing. i can only take a few, so i'll post a
message closing the offer. go to it!

eja1@Lehigh.EDU Fri Oct 28 14:12:16 1994

CHA (& to all),
Flood Zone. After Phish finished jammin' at the HORDE show, who played
after a nice Wide Spread set, everone flew down to down town Richmond. It
was my first Dave show; I had been listening to his tapes for a long time
at this point -- my friend had drilled them into me. Anyway, it was a
great show, and I'm not just saying that because it was my first; and let
me tell you Otiel can sure JAM!!!

BLUES TRAVELER TIX

tshalom@acs.bu.edu Fri Oct 28 14:24:46 1994

I'm sorry for posting this on the DMB net, but I don't have the BT email
address.
On Nov. 10 (Thurs), when BT comes to Boston (the Orpheum), I was
wondering if someone had 2 tix (in exchange for one and $). I will trade
one really good seat in the orchestra and some $ for two seats together.
Since the seats are reserved, a friend of mine couldn't get a ticket,
nevertheless get a seat next to us. Please email me back.

Thanks,
Todd Shalom

jdittric@fpc.com Fri Oct 28 15:09:43 1994

BT is scheduled to be Dave Letterman's musical guest on 11/1...
Probably won't be long until we see DMB doing the same... sigh...

Rusted Root....

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Fri Oct 28 15:24:24 1994

As Chardy has already stated, be prepared to dance....
But a fuller explanation.....
The lead singer sounds alot like David Byrne in his Talking Heads days,
but the music is different. Lots of percussion going on with cool fast
flowing rythms that are very easy to dance to. I'd definitely check out
their cd "When I Woke". Its got some great shit on it.

See ya'll at the Horse Center, then you understand what they're all about..

BTW a great Phish show last nite at UVa
See ya soon Rick, Emily, Gray, Clare and Blake.......
