quick question... maybe

lippe@u.washington.edu Fri Oct 28 16:25:26 1994

coming to Oregon in November (Why not Seattle?)) I just d/led
all 6 megs of pictures and stuff.. 'tis great. I have a question
about one of my present favorite bands. In Rhyme & Reason, there's
reference to "needle to the vein" etc... Now I still don't know if Jeff
Buckley (other favorite band) is on soe harder stuff, but I oh so hate
for great musicicans to be screwed up on big-time stuff like Heroine or
Coke... kind of greedy in one respect, but it's really just concern. So
is this autobiographical, as much of Daves stuff seems to be, or
postulation, or was I wrong on the point of where Daves lyrics come from,
or what?

klemmao4@wfu.edu Fri Oct 28 18:08:38 1994

Will,
in the past years, I don't think anyone of them would subdue themselves
to such a crazy drug as heroine. Granted, the band definitely does not
pass up the oppurtunity to fire up a phat spliff, but heroine is going a
little far. My guess would be that Dave, just like any rock star, has
seen other musicians fall to the addiction of heroine. I have a feeling
that as Dave continues to enter the mainstream and be exploited by cheesy
sorority girls, as he will inevitably be, many more rumors about Dave's
personal life (i.e. sexual orientation, etc.) will be fabricated. It is
up to the true fans to appreciate him for his brilliant lyrics and
unstoppable musical ability, and not to judge him on any other standards.
By the way, if anyone out there has a bootleg of the DMB jamming with
Greg Howard at the floodzone when Leroi's nephew's rap group accompanied
the band on an encore of Halloween, I would greatly aprreciate a bootleg
trade.

Actually, while some people do, some people don't. Carter says he
doesn't. I wouldn't suspect Dave or any of the rest of them, but then
again, you never know.

BT/DMB Letterman

IBASSIN@WESLEYAN.BITNET Fri Oct 28 19:03:54 1994

In response to the fear of DMB on Letterman cause BT is playing, no worries...ye
Letterman and Paul Shaffer are both big Traveler fans, Paul even plays on
BT's new album. Traveler has played letterman before, 3 times, not including
this one if im correct dating as far back as 1990-1. So while it's possible
that DMB could perform, don't use BT as any sort of gauge. Just a note, Ian

Mike DURHAM and to my knowledge he wasn't a member of ARU. the other
guy Mike DARRUM is who was said in to be in ARU. i don't know any
members besides Oteal so i'm lame in that category! anyway i know ARU
has jammed with DMB a few times. good shows!!!! what musician
wouldn't want to jam with the Dave Matthews Band? the only person i

set as they do now. they used to hardly ever have opening acts and
Dave used to come out solo and sing away for about 45 min. yes it was
way groovy and thats how i started to love 'em. cause they gave so
much music to us! but hey they still do. i remmember one nite ( the
miguel valdez benefit at the flood zone) carter, darryl rose and some
other people kept on jammin' long after the soundboard was turned
off. they were jamming on congas and such. i left at 3:30 A.M. cause
i had an 8:00 class(uggghhhh) but my bro said they played until he
didn't care what time it was! yes they DMB contains gifted, beautiful
musicians! i have many more stories of late nite jams and such but i
been in this basement too long, my eyes are turning red and i need to
go get some real light into my bones. SUNSHINY DAY!!! Peace.

my house is many miles away...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sat Oct 29 17:25:19 1994

well, seems this net is pretty balanced for the most part. for every
time i come on saying that true reflections is the low point in the
dmb setlist, someone says it's the greates, and more or less the same
for granny.

so let's balance out the bainbridge/durham thing. i hate 'em. i hate aru,
too, but i solve that problem by not going to aru shows. but on 7-27-93, when
i went to hear dave band, i got to hear a rip-ass first set, and then a second
set that was nothing more than oteal impressing himself and durham, beauford,
and whats-his-name from indecision being the only ones who could keep up.
stefan was completely shut out of the second set and sat in the corner like
a dejected child. after the show he was visibly upset, and if i'm not
mistaken, dave simply walked off stage and let them have their fun since they
decided to steal the show.
it's all well and good the bainbridge and durham can jam there asses off
and steal the show, but to do it when they're guests? i wanted to see
dave band, not half of aru. i'd already seen aru once that day, and that
was enough.
i've also had the displeasur of meeting mike not once, but several dozen
times over the course of the summer that he worked in "summer rhythms" at
kings dominion. i spent a great deal of time hanging out with freinds in
the entertainment lounge, and all he did was sit in the hall playing tunes
to himself. there's one thing to practice incessantly. there's another thing
to really enjoy playing. but's it's entirely another thing to simply believe
that your music is more important than the rest of the world. i don't have
much respect for a musician who is so arrogant with his music that he
doesn't have time to be polite the person trying to step over his lazy ass in
the hall to get out of a building while he sits there and plays "cliffs of
dover" by eric johnson.

i'm really sorry to be so vicious, but that night was a big downer. i know
a lot of people here disagree, but i also know that a lot of people here
really dig oteal and aru.

Jambay offer

grayp@pinn.net Sat Oct 29 17:36:12 1994

I think the best way we can get Jambay to play the east coast is to
spread the word as much as possible around here as well as everywhere
else possible.

To anyone who has never Jambay, they are a fantastic band who play all
original music that completely rocks.

In any case, I have been given a tape to spread. It is a clone of the
master board from 6-14-93 Fox Theatre - Boulder, CO
I have not listened to the whole tape yet so I cannot provide you with a
setlist or exact times. It is on 2 120min dats, but I doubt it is 240min
long. I will post more specifics later.

If you want this tape, send me an email saying "yes i want it".
I should also know whether you want a dat or analog copy and if you can
make copies for others.

I don't know if this will follow the usual tree distribution cycle & I
will make that decision when I find out what kind of response I get.

Silence comes with no instructions,

Re : Drugs

grayp@pinn.net Sat Oct 29 17:44:50 1994

Three posts in one day, I think thats more than I've posted in the last
six months.

Anyway, to the business at hand. I hope I don't disappoint anyone with
this, but frankly whether or not the band choose to partake in any
illegal (or legal for that matter) substances is none of our damn business!

Be they great musicians, the dave matthews band are real people who have
lives of their own. I see us here to discuss the music rather than
worrying about who does what kind of drugs. Perhaps if the quality of
the music were to suffer, there may be reason to speculate, but that is
clearly not the case here (go ahead and disagree with me).

Hope I haven't offended anyone with this, but I feel there's just too
much trash on the bandwidth these days.

Re: FTP query, tree, etc.. basically good stuff.

lippe@u.washington.edu Sat Oct 29 17:46:51 1994

it), there is a DMB section on the ever growing "archive.phish.net" FTP
site. You can find stuff about DMB, BT, Jambay, Horde, Phish, and a
whole bunch of other bands. DMB has 6 megs of pictures, small versions
of the same, a chords file which helps you along with playing the guitar
parts ( and _some_ sax and violin) to selected dmb songs. There is also
an FAQ, which explains this list, band info, history, taping stuff,
trading stuff, net stuff, stuff stuff, and more stuff.

me some mail, I'd be happy to tell you..
incidents, and need to finish up another 1 for 1 trade, I'd be interested
in running a DMB tree if anyone wants to offer up seeds, or I can wait
and use one of the three shows I'll be seeing here in the NW in November.
Running the tree would include making custom colour J-cards for dat and
analog..
later....
ERic

  I just d/led
all 6 megs of pictures and stuff.. 'tis great. I have a question
  	ERic..

I've been on this list for a while, but I know nothing about e-mail. How
do I see the "pictures and stuff"?

guitar player your notorius for wanted to express yourself past your

crunchaEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEeEEEE"---famous guitar lick.

on a sadder note, yes Mike is withdrawn and pretty much of a freak
but it not entirely by his own decree. he has to take psychoactive
drugs daily to be able to function. 'nuff said.

yea, i know Stefan was bummin at that after HORDE show. how would
you like it if someone stepped in for " a song or two" and completely
took over your instrument? bad musical ethics. i would of pissed in a
bottle and replaced the beer....oh well shit happens. the only reason
i did'nt freak out was 'cause i was psyched to see big name musicians
finally catching on to the where the real music was being played.
DMB worked their asses off to play and a litle musical support helps
out tremendously. look what the bootlegs and Minarets.net have done.
trust me DMB knows they owe us one! i'm out.

p.s. ---this is a response to the after HORDE DMB show and ARU
bashing post. Peace.

There is nothing wrong with a little heroine

NebuIous@aol.com Sat Oct 29 18:13:25 1994

Just so you guys know, 'heroine' is usually spelled heroin. while
technically dictionaries will give both definitions, the one with the 'e' is
typically reserved for the type of heroine that the big muscled man saves in
the last act of the play.

oh um... official dave content... er... i got that screen saver & sounds

hey,
Nice set, 2 hours and 5 minutes. I think Dave put on a great show for all the
record execs there. Rusted Root absolutely kills. Reallly fresh, great sound,
present well in concert. I am hooked. Anyways back to Dave. Really good set
IMHO. My favorite was the Watchtower encore, which I feel that 75% of the
crowd didn' figure out until they started jamming hard. About the crowd. I
have never been so dissapointed about a crowd in my life. Nothing against some
of the fine schoools in my hometwon, but could the frat boys have been any more
drunk??? I felt like killing the 3 meatheads in front of me who insisted on
talking during every song and yelling "DAVE" during times when he was talking
between songs (probabl one of the funnier times during a show). I'm a pacifist
at heart but had to restrain myself. Also during Cry Freedom Cry noone was
listening, which is one of his classic songs IMHO. ANyways enough bitching
about the crowd.
Steve
P.S. Does anybody know if Rusted Root is still opening at the Indiapolis show?
Any info would be cool...

Highlights were Get in Line, Nancies, and a hot Watchtower

I've seen them a bunch of times but I just don't think they are getting better.
They are getting tighter....but almost all the jamming and random stuff
just doesn't seem to be there anymore.

collapse on stage, I think we should keep out of their collective lives.

ditto.

elaborate. Maybe they AREN'T slipping. That would be a good thing.

I'd also like to hear a little more about this, if you would indulge us
Chico?

Maybe. So they played another new song! Cool!

However . . .

My complaining posts of one month ago STILL apply. This band is playing
very nearly the same setlists every night.

How many times have they played Cry Freedom since Providence?
How many shows without What Would You Say or Nancies?
How many times in the past two weeks have they done I'll Back You Up and
Watchtower as an encore?

I still can't believe the goddess thinks my posts make less sense than
hers... sheesh... i am a beacon of clarity.
Sorry, that wasn't funny.

Juliana Hatfield still kicks butt, Tanen...

thing, but I have had several requests for everything's stuff live, and I
have one good boot and would like more of just about anything, so I will tree
out this show!
fall break. I wrote the date on the tape, but I just have the setlist here.
Please email me with a response should you disire a copy of this show. Alas,
I am too poor to afford a DAT, and I have no way to DA, so this is analog
only. Sorry to disappoint some, but maybe you could contact everything
themselves if you are stuck and have only a DAT.[ Gee, must be nice!]

It was all one set with a short encore, damn noise reg's...., and there was
an opening act that wouldn't let me on the board.. :|. At any rate, this
should all fit onto one 100 minute tape and it's a super hq analog, if I do
say so, and please tell me if I'm wrong, it was my first taping experience.

Please email all req's to me personally and I'll announce this later next
week. Here's the request sheet, so please fill this out so I can be as
considerate to people as possible.

You go to UVA and your trying to tell us you can't find any DMB
 bootlegs?
WHAT????... I have a strange feeling there are one or two 'legs floating
around at UVA!!!!!... Just ask around and you won't have to bother mailing
 stuff back and forth...
                                         Sincerely,

While we seem to be feeling critical, I have a request- could we stop
calling them bootlegs? The band condones (encourages?) taping, and
bootlegs is usually a term used to refer to illegally recorded live
performances. The DMB net is the first place I've seen such tapes
referred to commonly as bootlegs rather than tapes. This just seems to me
to be a small way to recognize the kindness of the band and those who
work with it (Jeff, RCA, others). Whaddya think?

I have heard much of this song and yet have never heard it. Got it?
What I want to do is hear it, so if you'd mail me and tell me you have a
tape with it I'd trade my good stuff to you...
Thank you. Oh also - last night at the Phish show in Spartanburg, SC a
bunch of cops entered the theater and began patting people's pockets down
and making them empty their pockets. Bottom line - I managed to escape
without getting hurt, but my friend was caught for possession of pot and
parafanelia. So be careful - if you see the cops inside a theater, go
where they aren't, because it's not worth any trouble they can cause
you. I posted a whole long schpeal on the Phish net about cops and
busting us for something that harms no one, but I don't feel like
reitterating any of it, cause the whole thing really makes me sick,
but any discussion is welcome. And #36. Let's hear it.

Thanks for your time, and let's learn from each other's mistakes.
Russ.

by John Prine, DMB does not do justice to Prine's version, Dave & Tim
possibly.

Highlights were Get in Line, Nancies, and a hot Watchtower
favorites, overall not a really inspired show.
I've seen them a bunch of times but I just don't think they are getting better.
They are getting tighter....but almost all the jamming and random stuff
just doesn't seem to be there anymore.
Brian,
used to, Dave only busts into his strumming solo once, whereas he used to
do it twice, and the second could go on for a little while. The 4 shows I
have seen have been very mediocre and I am starting to think twice about my
love for this band. The crowds suck, I can barely hear over the din of
every single person screaming the lyrics to Satellite or having my view of
the band obstructed by crowd surfers. All the songs are done in the same
arrangements that are done on the album. The days of unintelligible Dave
lyrics are over, Parts of Jimi THing used to be undecipherable. Warehouse
as well. Dave is playing to the crowd, plain and simple. Except for a few
examples from this tour I think all these opinions to be true. And I will
stop this tirade, although I could go on.
Flame Away,
Sean
P.S. Brian do you want to trade, if so give drop me a line.

As subject says, this is directed to those of you that are W&L students.
If you aren't then you don't have to waste your time reading it.
Now then- my girlfriend is writing a "review" of your fine institution
for the Yale Daily News "Insider's Guide to Colleges". She has to
interview 5 W&L students. She has spoken with two, and needs to find
three more. It would take about twenty minutes of your time, and it's a
great way to tell perspective students about your school. if your
administration has done anything you hated, here's your chance for
revenge! Likewise, if you love something in particular about W&L, here's
a chance to let high school seniors know about it. If you are willing to
give her about twenty minutes of your time, write to me or directly to
her at jhiltune@minerva.cis.yale.edu Include your phone# in the message
so she can call you.
I feel bad posting a totally DMBless message, so here's a last thought-

hurt, only his instument.

I'm always psyched to hear about good bands on this net and if they're coming
my way to give 'em a listen, so in the spirit of extending the good tips on
cool bands (most recently the band everything), here's one you might
wanna check out.
They've been playing for a little more than a year, and are starting to take
it on the road. The Undies are a five piece band with male and female lead
vocals, with the rest of the band backing up. The strength of this band
is definitely their harmonies and the female lead. They are jamming more
and more, but the folk/funky/pop feel with great vocals is what makes

11/4 Orlando, FL Hard Rock Cafe

11/12 Daytona Beach, FL Black Eyed Susan's
11/17 Auburn, AL Locker Room
11/18 Birmingham, AL Five Points South Music Hall
11/19 TBA
11/21 Orlando FL, Downtown Jazz and Blues Festival
11/26 Tallahassee, FL The Moon

12/3 Athens, GA Atomic Music Club

12/15 Atlanta, GA Chameleon Club

Everyone out there who thinks this new wave of music(everything, dave,

ago, someone in colorado got the brilliant idea to put the best unsigned
bands the country on a disk. The project is called AWARE. Some artists
include Everything, Jackopierce, the Grapes, Acoustic Junction, The
Winebottles, Jupiter Coyote, Beanland, SHANNON WORRELL, Edwin McCain,
Hootie, ect. Get them! they are well priced, and two of the best Cd's you

Whaddaya say we tree the screen saver disc?? We wont have any problems
with generatino quality loss!!

Hehe only kidding....I jus thought it was funny.....

Anyways, someone posted that dave is only getting tighter and playing the
same stuff. I think his tighteness is the problem in general. Yes, a band
needs to be tight enough to know when to play the chorus etc, but now
that they have gotten each song down to a highly repeatable version, no
spotaneous jams happen. Isn't Jimi thing supposed to be different each
time you hear it???

But still awaiting the Horse Center......

One Sweet World, Dancing Nancies*, Warehouse, Jane, Quick Lay & Goodbye (I
say that's the name, dammit!!), Satelite, Rhyme, Get in Line, Tripping

i would just like to point out at this point that quick lay and goodbye is
not the preferred name of this song. by referring to it as such, you are
insulting a close, personal freind of dave, and you are insulting dave.
all you need to do is stop and think about that title and you'll realize
that it's cold, stereotypically male, and more or less just not a good way
to refer to any aspect of life. think of how overwhelmingly beautiful
this song is, and you should find yourself incapable of such a deragatory

i'm being very serious, and saying this from my own abhorrence (sp?) of
this title, but i also know that this is how dave feels about it.

Billies, Cry Freedom, Jimi Thang, Recently, What Would You Say?, #36, Ants

A while ago someone made the comment that Boyd and LeRoi were out
of tune a LOT recently, and well, we had that discussion about
the band's um...well...habits.

Well, anyone else notice a connection??? I'm all for
legalization and whatnot, and personally, i dont care what others
do in their spare time, but when it starts to affect the rest of
life, well, thats where I draw a line.

I've noticed (big time on the Uva Ampitheatre show) that boyd is
almost a full step out of tune at points, and only before the
encore does he fix that. I know for a fact that he smokes--he
asked me if i had a bowl on me at one point, but if you're
getting so high that you can't play right, then maybe something
should be done by yourself to fix this. There's nothing wrong
with having a few drinks or tokes to loosen up before a gig, but
being obliterated is plain irresponsible. Not noticing that
you're out of tune until 1 1/2 hours into a show seems a bit much
to me.

Getting off of the soapbox,

Wade

tell me, are you satisfied with..

bmking@mail.wm.edu Mon Oct 31 15:34:24 1994

the fact that dave was #90 on billboard?

I thought it was kinda interesting.

Like all of us weirdo's went out and bought the album the first couple days,
and shot it up to #34 (and on the cosmic scale of things, I'd just like to
say that's one of the cooler things I've seen), but then since they haven't
hit the main current in this river of sales yet, they slipped _way_ back
down..

The VA Horse center is gen'l admission, oui?

see y'all at lex & wfu. :)

People Mag. UTTAD Review

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Mon Oct 31 16:55:59 1994

Hey all. Here's the full text from the previously mentioned People review

quirky tunes that ramble along interesting paths. Nonetheless this major-label
debut has a beguiling sound all its own, a sound that mixes jazzy accoustic
guitar riffs with spiraling sax solos.

The songs often have a bittersweet flavor. The opener advises that we settle
for "The Best of What's Around," while the conclusion of the soft-spoken
"Typical Situation" (Its a typical situation/In these Typical Times/Too Many
Choices) resonates in today's anxious culture. Steve Lillywhite's panoramic
production suits the talented band, which features a rhythm section with a rock
steady pulse and saucy fiddling from Boyd Tinsley. Under the Table and
Dreaming is a thoughtful album from a promising artist.

Short and relatively sweet -- its nice to see a favorable review, but remember
who People Magazine is marketed to...

Why do DMB crowds suck?

JSLAGHT@drew.edu Mon Oct 31 17:00:29 1994

When Sean Barry wrote of shitty crowds at DMB shows he was right. I have only
been to two myself, the first one at Woodbury Forest high school in Va. The
crowd was actually moshing to some of the songs, and just being complete assholes in general. My second show was at Roseland last month, and i was surrounded
by 7th grade girls screaming(shrilling) Dave's name.
any of the shows my friends and I go to? I hope to see some of you at
Irving Plaza November 7th!

not the preferred name of this song. by referring to it as such, you are
insulting a close, personal freind of dave, and you are insulting dave.
all you need to do is stop and think about that title and you'll realize

Digest 333

NebuIous@aol.com Mon Oct 31 17:31:34 1994

The digest from hell!!

Digest 333 (half of 666...hmmmm) was possibly the worst digest ever spewed
from Minarets.net.

At the risk of sounding like a guy stuck in the 'glory days' of minarets.net
(okay, there weren't any), this net is all of a sudden getting drastically
worse. The posts now are almost 100% bullshit. Of course, this post is too,
but I sort of feel like we have to deal with this in public (and hopefully
with as little name calling as possible) to try and slow our decent into
phish.net territory...

There are no soulmates left on the highway.

Re: MINARETS digest 332

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Mon Oct 31 19:03:28 1994

the name of the song, as heard on the Uva Ampitheatre show
(stefan's voice in the background) is "Say Goodbye".

What was the name of the "new really cool unnamed tune" that they
soundchecked??? It wouldn't happen to be "drive in drive out"
would it??? They soundchecked it at Uva on the 27th of sept,
half of it just to appease my constant nagging of dave to play
it, but from what he's told me, he wants to revamp it, and start
playing it again.

For those of you who've seen a full band "Drive In, Drive Out"
you know that it can be FULL of amazing jams...

Does selling out enter the picture? Dave is playing what the people want
to hear. Extended jams are awesome for those in the crowd who've heard
the song hundreds of times, like say, us, but at the rate he's moving
around the country he's just getting heard for the first times now. I
saw a show in Chapel Hill with 600 people and he did the most intense
jams I have ever seen in a live show. I'm talking ever - I've seen
plenty of Phish shows, etc., but I've never seen jams like they did that
night. It was 2/15/94. Anyhow I saw them just last month and their jams
were nothing. They played the whole CD and nothing I wasn't expected.
It seemed even the jams were planned in terms of how many measures they
would jam for. What kind of a jam is that? Let's keep this discussion
open, though Clare Emily, because lots of good bands stop playing what
they want to play when the bucks start rolling in. Phish is one that
hasn't; we really don't know what's going to happen with Dave. I'm going
to go hug a tree now and pray Dave brings the jams back to his music.

Russ.
