i really didn't mean CASH (above the ticket price anyway), although
that certainly has its merits...
i was speaking more in terms of rare Bagbys, etc... anything good
that i would like to have... sorry if you all assumed i was some kind
of huge capitalist whore... if i wanted cash, i'd name a price-
instead i was trying to see what people had to offer...

just trying to clarify- hope you all understand.

1st CALIFORNIA SHOW!!

@Xenon.Stanford.EDU:malachi@leland.stanford.edu Fri Dec 2 07:39:05 1994

Tonight, the DMB played their very first ever show in California at the
Palookaville in Santa Cruz (the one that cost $5). And it rocked!

First of all, no one seemed to really know who they had come to see
(probably as a result of the 5 bux tickets). Secondly, the place
definitely qualified more as a club than a "venue".

Seek Up
Best of What's Around
The Song that Jane Likes
Dancing Nancies
Warehouse
Satellite
Rhyme and Reason
Jimi Thing
Say Goodbye
TRUE REFLECTIONS
What Would You Say
Tripping Billies
Recently
#36
Ants Marching

solo Christmas Song

The show lasted about 2 hrs. 15 min. and was the best of the 5 shows that I
have been to. The band seemed restdhappy to be alive, especially Dave, who
emitted quite a bit of Davespeak for such an unfamiliar audience. Carter
was jammin pretty hard, too.

I'd say that Dancing Nancies and Jimi Thing started everything off very
nicely for me. Say Goodbye and True Reflections was the climax, and
Christmas Song sent everyone into oblivion.

I would write more about the show, but I'm about to fall asleep after the
best night of my life, so I suspect I could write more commentary after the
Davis, San Jose, and San Francisco shows. Hope to see ANYONE there!

BTW - if anyone taped the show, i'd love to trade for it!

I knew there was something I had to post here....

CONJURAEM@urvax.urich.edu Fri Dec 2 08:29:12 1994

On my recent turkey week trip out to Utah to do a little skiing, I happened
to be listening to the radio....yikes, I admit it....

Anyway my point is that they are playing DMB out in Utah. Productive
work on RCA's part. The guys haven't even made it to that state yet.
However there are still people out there that go "Who?" when you mention
Dave's name....namely one friend of mine from Montana. I told him that
Dave was playing in his home town of Bozeman, MT over turkey week and he
exclaimed the aformentioned...."Who?"

aside, I am one who doesn't turn that box of non-sense on when I am bored...
I put a live show on my stereo instead, but ANYWAY...I happened to see
something on MTV last night that I am a very strong supporter of and thing
think, many of us should at least takes a looksy at it. It has to do with
the latest version of the Real World. I know many of you may be quick to
jump and say...
"Oh that just a stupid soap opera version of how none of us live...."
and yes that is probably true...
but if any of you have ever watched the show, then you might know something
about the guy on there named Pedro Zamoro (sp?) As some of you might know
he living with the AIDS virus and struggled through many parts of the show
due to his illness. He also lived the healthy times in his life to the
fullest and was an annimate activist for AIDS rights and AIDS awareness.

Well three weeks ago today, Pedro past away. MTV did a memorial to him
last night, that was very inspiring and very sad at the same time.

Well if you can catch it, please just take the hour to sit down and watch
the program. In a time when many of us sit behind this computers healthy
and illness free, it is very reflective to watch someone only a few years
older than you, waste away from a preventative disease....

OK enough of my schpeel....

now back to your regularly scheduled newbie discussions and tape trades....

let it snow let it snow let it snow

*   *   *       *
*    *  *   *

there is my version of snow...pretty bad...just use your imagination...

AND finally, check out my new WWW page....
its not totatlly done, but if you wanna check it out the address is at
the bottom of this message under my LONG sig, that I need to change...

I'd update it with pertinent info if nobody cares. The reason I'm asking
is that they have entries for a WWW site, FAQ, lyrics, tablature,
digitized music, etc., and I didn't want to list people's names as
sources if they didn't want it broadcast all over the frigging cyberworld.
(I just put netscape (quicker than Mosaic) on my PC and boy am I wasting
time surfing) Anyway, does anybody care, anybody listening (Rick, Ben(s))??

Continually amazed by this WWW stuff...

All that would need to be done is write an HTML document with the URL's of=

I'll check it out...

Hey Ben I couldn't get your address to from the WWW pages. I added tiny 5K=

Re: interesting bootleg & questions.

chobbs@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Fri Dec 2 11:47:50 1994

someone asked if highspeed dubbing seriously decreases sound quality
and i thought that there are probably lots of people with more technical
insight onto tape quality thatn i have ..but i understand it all in
laymans terms and i feel comfy sharing my knowledge and im open to
correction too

THE LONG HAUL .. like a few generations down
the tapes is moving faster and for that reason blank (empty noiseless)
tinsy spaces are left .. the recordingisnt quite a complete .. sortof
like what it looks like when you run a piecce of chalk flatwise over a
chalkboard .. filled in..but fuzzy .. follow?

YOURS THAT YOU USED it .. and whether youused dolby a, b, or c
(these caps are not yelling-- just emphasis)
dolby sortof laps off the upper hinge of the sound spectrun when youi are
recording .. preventing hiss .. but anything recorded in dolby must also
be played back in dolby to experience the benefits (? thats subjective i
guess) play back in dolby expands the sound specctrum so that you still
have a full sound umm math like recored dolby - sound, play dolby + that
same amount of sound = full sound less hiss .. well sortof

ANYWAYS lots of people dont like dolby at all so be careful with it

and dual cassette decks .. it doesnt make a difference what you do
because they are programmed to make an exact recording of the master ..
minus the typical generational wear

no matter what .. make sure you have clean heads (tape heads not your
heads ) and keep your deck up ... demagnatitze regulary and such
th e whole point is to presserve sound quality for everyone

okey dokey .. well i hope my laymans knowledege isnt too confusing or
erroneous and that it sortof gave you some insight as to whats going on here
hmmm
i think its time to frolic ..and play and smile

The show was great!! I thought it was so cool how so few people knew about them
before last night, but so many seemed to be instantly converted after hearing
their first few songs. Boyd, not surprisingly, was absolutely on fire. And I
could really enjoy him, too, being only two rows back with *plenty* of space to
groove.

I just can't say enough about how cool the crowd was. I kept overhearing people
say that they had never heard about them before yesterday, and that they had
to go to the back and get cd's or whatever. Everyone was really respectful and
everytime I turned around I saw about 200 smiles looking back at me.

Dave was really excited that they were received so warmly. "Everything" opened
for them, and they were amazing, too. I'd have to say that we gave the warmest
welcome to the West Coast possible. East Coast people should be proud.

Peace,
Matt

Dear Blue Screen Show folks,
I'm undoubtedly being super-anal here, but you might want to
consider leaving the stuff that's taken from released CD's off of your
tapes that you're treeing. By taping it and widely distributing it, you
might be indirectly hurting the bands in question. (I'm not too worried
about the Dead's financial situation; I'm more concerned about GSW.) Just
a little ethical dilemna to consider. The tapes sound like they'd be
killer even without China-Rider or Nightengale.
Thanks,
Mr. Anti-copyright infingement.

i disagree. the whole point of treeing the blue screen is to spread this
music, and all of these bands are interested in spreading there music.
in all honesty, i think the only member of this entorage of musicians who
gives a flying f**k about his financial situation is dave matthews, and
he obviously doesn't care enough to put a cap on what music goes where.
if these bands don't care if we march into their shows with a tape deck
and start spreading their music around, why should they care what becomes
of their studio recordings? they didn't lose money on putting it out, and
they make most of their money off of their live performances.
at the same time, the music found on the blue screen tapes will give willing
people the opportunity to hear these bands music in it's studio form and
decide whether or not they want to get more, and also hear the music in
conjunction with other bands of the genre.

on that note, i think the blue screen is a great concept. and after two years
of slowly molding my radio show into what i want it to be, i've finally found
it. next semester i'll be running a specialty show on a campus radio station,
called the icebox menagerie, that will be based on a similar concept.

the difference in my show, though, will be that i will be exploring the range
of this genre more, trying to introduce my campus to a wider range of music
that's on its way to being known as 'granola' music. whatever that means.
i'll probably list my songs as well, so that you can see these names regularly,
and hopefully i'll be able to build up some sort of public response here on
what is good and what is bad and pass that info on to you (so all you folks
here at jmu be sure to tune in to 88.7fm, wxjm next wednesday night at 8pm

so how does this net help? help me find the bands that need exposure. i want
to get as much new music into our rotation bins as possible, so if you are in
any way related to minor labels or a blossoming band, get in touch with me.
as far as stuff that goes in our rotation bin, it must be on cd or 7" vinyl,
i'll take tapes, too, and use them myself only on my show. we already have
the wiggly compilation and aware II (both of which i ______HIGHLY______
recommend) and i'm looking for more.

thanx, y'all...

i disagree. the whole point of treeing the blue screen is to spread this

You're absolutely right Rick. However, and let's take GSW as an example,
they are not the ones in complete control of HOW there music is
distributed. The whole point of signing with a major label is to take
advantage of their VAST distribution channel. It's sort of amazing,
suddenly get their own little card in thousands of record stores around
the country, and the world actually.

in all honesty, i think the only member of this entorage of musicians who
gives a flying f**k about his financial situation is dave matthews, and
he obviously doesn't care enough to put a cap on what music goes where.

You know something, it doesn't really MATTER anymore whether Dave cares
about his financial situation or not. I can assure you that RCA does
care very much about their financial situation, and although I would
think that treeing Brian's show will not affect sales negatively of any
of the bands he plays, it doesn't matter what I think either. It'd be
against the law.

----

on that note, i think the blue screen is a great concept.

Me too. Too bad I won't be able to hear Brian's show. And your show too,
Rick.

Twas the nite before finals

akinscj0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Fri Dec 2 15:39:14 1994

And another little something from a perspective who I had last year who now
goes to Sewanee......

                   The Night Before Finals

                 Twas the night before finals,
                 And all through the college,
                 The students were praying
                 For last minute knowledge.

                 Most were quite sleepy,
                 But none touched their beds,
                 While visions of essays
                 danced in their heads.

                 Out in the taverns,
                 A few were still drinking,
                 And hoping that liquor
                 would loosen up their thinking.

                 In my own apartment,
                 I had been pacing,
                 And dreading exams
                 I soon would be facing.

                 My roommate was speechless,
                 His nose in his books,
                 And my comments to him
                 Drew unfriendly looks.

                 I drained all the coffee,
                 And brewed a new pot,
                 No longer caring
                 That my nerves were shot.

                 I stared at my notes,
                 But my thoughts were muddy,
                 My eyes went ablur,
                 I just couldn't study.

                 "Some pizza might help,"
                 I said with a shiver,
                 But each place I called
                 Refused to deliver.

                 I'd nearly concluded
                 That life was too cruel,
                 With futures depending
                 On grades had in school.

                 When all of a sudden,
                 Our door opened wide,
And Patron Saint Put It Off
                 Ambled inside.

                 His spirit was careless,
                 His manner was mellow,

                 "What kind of student
                 Would make such a fuss,
                 To toss back at teachers
                 What they tossed at us?"

"On Cliff Notes! On Crib Notes!
                 On Last Year's Exams!
                 On Wingit and Slingit,
                 And Last Minute Crams!"

                 His message delivered,
                 He vanished from sight,
                 But we heard him laughing
                 Outside in the night.

                 "Your teachers have pegged you,
                 So just do your best.

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Fri Dec 2 16:13:31 1994

Rick- what does this mean? I'm a little confused. No one else care about
$? Maybe less than most entertainers, perhaps, but they probably care
just a little bit.

if these bands don't care if we march into their shows with a tape deck
and start spreading their music around, why should they care what becomes
of their studio recordings? they didn't lose money on putting it out, and
they make most of their money off of their live performances.

I sort of agree, with many hesitations. First of all, I think the
original post was more in concern for the Blue screen folks than the
artists- just making sure they don't get into trouble. However- anyone
can play anything on the radio (most programs generally play nothing BUT
studio releases- remember) and anyone can tape it. Treeing it, however,
might constitute some sort of use without permission.
The Dead's policy on taping has paid off for them simply because of sound
quality- they made a ton releasing a show on CD that almost everyone had a
copy of on tape already (8-13-75, One From the Vault) because their fans
are fanatic about sound quality. Now- what if some group
decided to get one guy to buy a copy of the disk and then tree it for
everyone, DAT or with hi- q analog equipment to minimize loss of signal? The
band might not be too pleased. This is an exaggeration of
the Blue Screen situation, of course. All I'm saying is be careful.

at the same time, the music found on the blue screen tapes will give willing
people the opportunity to hear these bands music in it's studio form and
decide whether or not they want to get more, and also hear the music in
conjunction with other bands of the genre.

on that note, i think the blue screen is a great concept. and after two years
of slowly molding my radio show into what i want it to be, i've finally found
it. next semester i'll be running a specialty show on a campus radio station,
called the icebox menagerie, that will be based on a similar concept.

the difference in my show, though, will be that i will be exploring the range
of this genre more, trying to introduce my campus to a wider range of music
that's on its way to being known as 'granola' music. whatever that means.
i'll probably list my songs as well, so that you can see these names regularly,
and hopefully i'll be able to build up some sort of public response here on
what is good and what is bad and pass that info on to you (so all you folks
here at jmu be sure to tune in to 88.7fm, wxjm next wednesday night at 8pm

so how does this net help? help me find the bands that need exposure. i want
to get as much new music into our rotation bins as possible, so if you are in
any way related to minor labels or a blossoming band, get in touch with me.
as far as stuff that goes in our rotation bin, it must be on cd or 7" vinyl,
i'll take tapes, too, and use them myself only on my show. we already have
the wiggly compilation and aware II (both of which i ______HIGHLY______
recommend) and i'm looking for more.

I'm still plugging Blue Miracle. Anyone at MAryland have any tapes? Does
anyone even tape them? I've never seen a deck at the board.

 thanx, y'all...

I am new at this whole thing but I can tell it is going to be one hell
of a journey. I am looking for some people who are willing to do some trading.
I don't have very much now but I do have some stuff. I only have the DMB and
Rusted Root to offer, but it's a start. Please send me a line or to if
you would like a list of what I have, I will be more than happy to make
copies for you. I also heard a rumor that the DMB was going to make
an appearence somewhere in NY before NYE; is this true?

UTTAD ants, the mystery continues....

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Fri Dec 2 17:45:38 1994

hello world,
on UTTAD. I'm not sure if this has been debated before my month and a half
amongst such good friends, but I know some people out there wonder why the hell
Dave put Ants on the disc. Rick made a point about Satellite being a newly
sublime version which Dave obviously wanted to share with his audience, but we
can all see and hear that Ants as recorded on the cd is rather dangerously
Table and Dreaming, which is a lyric from Ants, therefore, the song is on the
album. But then Why is it such a lame version? Has anyone noticed the absence
of the familiar "Dueling Banjos" riff between Boyd and Leroi? It's not there
and the voids are filled with several different fills that don't have the same
effect as what we were all used to hearing. Now, why didn't they use the riff?
Maybe in the big world of major label-land, copyrights prohibited the use of
that particular riff. thusly, ants is heard without the duel and we have the
result which is akin to mooshy pasta sticking to the roof of my mouth. What
does everyone think? If I'm completely off base, let me know.
ps let's all send Cha some positive mental energy to help him with all that
dubbing he's so generously doing with his DAVEMALTATIONS tape! Thanks from us

Well, I think they definitely could've done some more studio work with it,
but hey..

Anyway, I wanted to post to say that they really didn't NEED to put ants on
the album, title withstanding.. Counting Crows cut 'August and Everything
After' (what would've been the "title track") from their cd because they
weren't happy with the way it sounded.. And I doubt either daveband or even
RCA would freak if there was a title referring to music only found on a
previous album..

Anwyay, I think the album as a whole is phenomenol, and beautiful to the ears
and mind.

I was reading that beast I wrote about a year ago in the minarets history,
vol 3 (I think) recently posted, and sometimes I wonder where my mind wanders
when posting.. that thing even confused me.

In Minneapolis the radio stations have been playing DMB since the
album came out. Songs like, "What Would You Say", "Jimi Thing",
"Satellite", and "The Best of What's Around". And on 97.1 (you're
all thinking, "what the f**k is 97.1"), they played the whole

ants marching under the table

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Fri Dec 2 21:51:03 1994

posts concerning this, except for one thing. So, that is where I'm coming
crap. Now, I believe it's close, but not quite actual crap. I listened to it
about twenty times today, and I understand the crap argument -- but ONLY if
you have seen/heard dave's live shit, or are famaliar with the R2T version,
which I have/am. The people who really love uttad-ants, _probably_ have only
heard this version. Now there are people who confuse me (pak) because they
don't adhere to this thoery, but what can you say. I am probably way off
base, but I understand why new dmb fans like the new version of ants. I
cannot understand, however, andone who had heard r2t, that likes the uttad ver.
better -- that will probably never make sense to me. Of course, this theory is
Table and Dreaming, which is a lyric from Ants, therefore, the song is
on the album. But then Why is it such a lame version?
some merit in this version -- like the fact that it has a lot of violin at the
end -- or some other arbitrary reason for this song to draw new fans to listen
to it. The only reason I bring this up, is because over thanksgiving, pak and
I had 35 semi-drunk family members dancing to ants, and they all loved it, and
they all mentioned the violin, and not a single one of them had ever heard it
before. One argument for that, is that none of them have any taste whatsoever,
but ants was not anyone's favourite song -- that shows a little taste. So this
got me thinking -- what is their problem? -- Sooo... I listened to the song
twenty times. Everybody, go do that now. Back? Did you notice, right before
you almost threw up, that there _is_ *something* catchy about it? My problem
is that I don't know what it is. Now, I've talked to 3 of my relatives since
then, and I tell them all to go get r2t, first. If my theory holds true, they
should lose their fucking minds upon hearing the older version of ants. We did
conclude, after all, they they do have some taste.

So what was the point, you ask? ummm, oh yea-- uttad ants sucks -- but not
quite as bad as we think.

To me, it is the absence of the duelling banjos rift that _really_ makes it
less enjoyable. But if you weren't aware there ever was a duelling banjos
rift, then...... hell, if you weren't aware that there was a previous version
abts, THEN......... look-- someone posted earlier about how taping with
high-speed dubbing was like rubbing chalk, flat side down, on a thing. This
is sort-of the same way -- there is something missing for sure -- almost like
the whole song isn't even there. But, if you don't know what real chalk looks
like, then what the fuck are you gonna say about it? I mean, if people dig it
then, cool, whatever. Just sit and listen to satellite over and over and over
again, really really really loud. Rick has one hell of a point about the
background sounds.

I don't think that the studio version of "Ants" sucks, and I don't think
that the "dualing banjo thing" makes the song, but I do agree
that it doesn't compare to the power of the live version. Here's what I
think about the different version.

The record label definitly had something to do with it. Dave and the
band know that "Ants" is a "live" song, and if it was their choice, I
don't believe they would have put a version of it on their studio album.
The record label most likely strongly made them put it on because that
was the big song off their "Remember Two Things" album and the label knew
that "Ants" would boost the sales of "UTT&D" way up. This whole "have to
listen to what the record label says" thing is the reason why The Samples
started their own record label, "WAR?".

The good thing about it is, the people that are just hearing DMB for
their first time are saying to themselves, "This song must be killer live!"
So they check out a Dave show.

So to all the listeners that are new to DMB, "Ants" is killer live. But
until you can see them live, stick with the album version, because it's
great too.

Sorry to bother all, but I forgot to include something in my last statement.

They did not put "Ants" on the album because the title of the album comes
from that song. They could have easily taken the song "Ants" off the
album, and called the album, "Satellite", or "Typical Situation". I
think they decided to put the song "Ants" on the album before they
decided on "Under The Table And Dreaming" for the title of the album.

DMB on the World Cafe

benjamin@sccs.swarthmore.edu Fri Dec 2 22:35:33 1994

Hey my friends, I haven't seen any posts regarding the World Cafe segment
which ran today on WXPN public radio. I am in Philadelphia, where the
show was recorded (probably in early October when DMB played on South
Street) so perhaps I got to hear it before you. Don't worry, I'm sure it
will be playing on a station near you in the near future . . .
beginning. Dave, Boyd and Carter speak. Nothing earth shattering was
What Would You Say (surprise, surprise : Dave suggests starting out with
this one, "We've only played it 800 times"), sweet Pay for What You Get,
Ants MArching, Cry Freedom (!!!). The Cry Freedom at the end was very
suprising in a good way for me. The radio guy made sure to comment on
how that song isn't on any album (yet) Between songs, there is some
great Dave-speak. Great stuff. RRrrrrr-rrrrr-urg!! Stefan was
difficult to hear. It sounded as if Carter was just keeping the beat on
one snare and a tom, or at least something pretty minimal. Boyd sounded
real good. Leroi (my fav) sounded sorta hungover. Probably too early in
the morning for him.
I was someone who was thouroughly experienced with the R2T Ants and many
versions of live Ants before hearing the UTTAD Ants. And I have to say
that I like the UTTAD Ants. A lot. I find the groove Stefan lays down
much more satisfying that the one on R2T. Of course, who wouldn't rather
be seeing Ants in concert? That goes without saying. In fact, unlike
many others it seems, Ants was not what got me into DMB. I used to skip
to track 6 everytime I played R2T for a long time. Ants actually annoyed
me. Especially on R2T, which is a weak version. I couldn't understand
the long intro. Just my opinions . . .

Re: UTTAD ants, the mystery continues....

NebuIous@aol.com Sat Dec 3 00:00:26 1994

can all see and hear that Ants as recorded on the cd is rather dangerously
The
Table and Dreaming, which is a lyric from Ants, therefore, the song is on
the
album. But then Why is it such a lame version? Has anyone noticed the
absence

Er, I don't really see that as a pressing concern on Dave's mind. In my
mind, the song is on the CD because of the green things with numbers on them.
song causes an uproar from frathouse drunks (hee hee i'm waiting for the
flames).

Of course, the CD version of the song especially, absolutely sucks.

If someone likes the song, that is up to them, but I think just about ALL of
us would agree that something happened on the way to the record store...
Generally I think the entire album lacks the same emotion that live shows and
even R2T has, but Ants especially just sounds so fucking WEIRD. The entire
sound is muddled, the lack of any intro sucks, and that half-chorus makes me
sick.

IMHO, if the CD version of the song was as catchy as it can be, it would be
the first single, and it would be the single that made DMB a household name.

Yowza.

Love & flames directed directly to me.

ants discussion

JNICHOL1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Sat Dec 3 01:17:47 1994

okay, i believe the UTTAD version of ants marching is brilliant...of course the
R2T version is better, but because it is performed *live* and dmb excel in that
department...i'm that guy keith mentioned in the last post and yes there were a
about 35 drunk people grooving to UTTAD "Ants"...this is not because they were
drunk...hell, i had my entire floor in the place i live come over to my suite
to hear UTTAD for the first time and they weren't drunk...they just love good
music, and it so happens that dmb is *good* music...'k?...i am sure that many
out there agree with me...to change the subject, thank you for those turning in
dmb encounter stories to me (dominic, wheeee!)...my address is
jnichol1@ua1vm.ua.edu and for those who don't know about it, i would like to
receive stories (preferably true ones, okay?) of encounters you had with any
dmb members...i don't care how long it is, or how farfetched it is...thank you
for your time...

copyright stuff

msweeney@muselab.ac.runet.edu Sat Dec 3 02:50:59 1994

Hello all
make a profit. That's with bagby's. ASCAP and BMI make it there busness
to make sure copyright infringement doesn't happen (look on the albums
you'll see them in the copyrights). I know of a store in the DC area
that has a court case with ASCAP right now where the owner was fined
because he plays CD's in his store. He isn't a music store and is
makeing no profit but he is broadcasting it in a public format. When a
radio sation plays a song they pay ASCAP or BMI a certain amount of money
hell places that own jukeboxes pay ASCAP and BMI for everytime a song is
played. Copyright's are very touchy. But as with computer software
people copy it all the time i don't think people are going to make a real
big deal out of it and if they do Blue Screen will be the one's in
trouble (not to throw the blame of blue screen just to straighten it
out). For The bands though. The GSW song is of Bag this is a self
produced album and the money goes to the band. One song off the album i
don't think is going to be a problem but i know my freinds who's band is
finnally releaseing their first CD on Grass Records refused to copy the
album for freind's because if ou buy the album from a store the store
will buy more albums and the band will make more money and do better.
I'm not sure why i included all of this just felt like shareing what i've
been told buy my freind in his dealings with the music world from the
bands side (and haveing a label doesn't mean shit buy the way my freinds
CD got bumped backk at the printing plant buy Maireh carry's christmas
album and it's already a month over due it all comes down to money) cya all

matt

PS sorry but i got to throw this in. If you like Indie Rock look for My
Life In Rain's CD sometime before May (my freind's band) a band even Ian
McKaye likes (or so he told the woman who signed them to grass). they
have a 7" out now on 50% records $3 if you want let me know. Sorry i had
to say that I got an advance copy of the CD and it's cool and i want
these guys to doo well they deserve it.

In my oh so very humble opinion Ants on UTTAD is a good "alternate" version
of the Ants on R2T. When I first heard about the new album (UTTAD) I was
disappointed that there were some repeats from the previous albums, but I
think that the band approached the 4 previously recorded songs with
sufficient originality thet they justified the re-recording of those songs
(Sattelite, Ants, Nancies, Warehouse). While no studio version of any
DAMABA song could ever compare to a live performance, Ants on UTTAD has
good qualities which I would be happy to point out (when I'm sober).
interpreted by me as illegal only "for profit". Otherwise I would shit my
pants every time I copied a CD so I could listen to it on my car's tape
deck.
they were assholes before the frats they'll always be assholes. The frats
just make it easier to recognize the particularly annoying assholes(they
congregate more readily than the rest). Which hopefully I am not.
And I hope all of you who were making such a big deal about labeling DAMABA
fans (grannies, jimmies) aren't using such terms as "frat boys" Otherwise
I might have to label you as a hypocrite, and then we'd both feel like
dumbasses (one label that I use freely without regret) Not angry, just

DMB/Phish in Davis, CA

@Xenon.Stanford.EDU:malachi@leland.stanford.edu Sat Dec 3 07:16:51 1994

COUNTRY HORNS), and it was a GREAT show, especially for Phish. I guess I'm
a little spoiled because I saw Dave headline last night in a club for $5,
and tonight's set was pretty typical and very big comparitively. I walked
in right at the end of the first song, just in time to hear the last few
chords, and it sounded like #36, plus Ants followed. Also, I don't know

DMB
---
#36?
Ants Marching
Dancing Nancies
Warehouse
Satellite
Jimi Thing
Tripping Billies

PHISH
-----
SET I

Poor Heart
2001
Sparkle
We've got a ____ in the band
It's Ice
Lizards
Col. Forbin's Ascent (maybe)
Stash
Squirming Coil
SOLO BY PAGE! (continuation of Squirming Coil)

SET II

Can this wait 'til I'm old, Can I live while I'm young?
David Bowie

W/ GIANT COUNTRY HORNS

LONG Jam (maybe 20 min, continuation of David Bowie?)
Don't Take Another Step (Don't Blame It on Yourself)
something off Junta (I couldn't remember the name)
Sausage or maybe Gumbo?
No Idea
Suzy Greenberg

ENCORE

Cavern

BTW, if anyone can correct me on song names, please do!

Unfortunately, none of the DMB came out to jam with Phish (maybe tomorrow
night!), but they played a really clean, power-packed set. Everyone there
seemed quite unexpectedly impressed. Again, the band seemed to be in high
spirits, especially Dave, but no Davespeak tonight.

Phish really impressed me tonight, because I had kind of gotten sick of
their silliness. At the end of the first set, kind of during Squirming
Coil, if I remember correctly, everyone but Page left the stage and he
performed the most beautiful piano solo I have ever heard (might have been
10 min. or longer). The audience was completely awed. Other than this and
the power of the GCH, highlights for me were 2001, Lizards, Don't Take
Another Step, and Cavern.

Especially because of Page's solo, I feel obligated to share the copy of
this show once I get it. I will trade it for extremely HIGH QUALITY (as it
will be) DMB, WSP, Phish, ARU, Allgood, ABB, BluesT or GSW (in order of
preference) to the first five people that respond. Please be honest about
the quality of shows and make the subject of the message PAGE.

2-14-95, carpenter center ticket info

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sat Dec 3 14:29:15 1994

so, how many people are thinking of going to the carpenter center (as in
the band's performance with richmond symphony)?

i tried the bama rags line (1-800-594-tixx) and got an answering machine
(with people screaming really funny things in the background of a women
bastard route. i got shut out of nye, so i'm not going to miss out on
this. the number there is (804) 671-8100.

there's three price ranges due to the nature of the carpenter center (where
the richmond symphony usually plays anyway. i hear this place is about on
par with the fox in atlanta.) the best seats are $45, and when i bought
mine an hour ago, i got third row, so tickets are selling slowly, but
i'd say very steadily.
the other two prices are $29.50 and $22.50. i don't know where this will
put you, nor do i know how fast these cheaper tix are selling.

my service charge was $3.25 (grrr.) and they popped in another "processing
fee" of $1 just for placing the order. (double grrrr.)

at any rate, the good seats are far from sold out at this point, but don't
waste any time. i thought i'd have until at least mid-dec to get nye tix.

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sat Dec 3 14:49:58 1994

ants.
red and black antennae waving. they all do it the same.....they all
do it the same......waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy.

do you think that as dave sings that these days, he's laughing at his
audience, and feels that because he has such a teeny-bopper audience
in certain ways that this song is more appropriate than ever?

but aside from that, let me see if i can justify my humble opinions on
why the uttad ants marching sux. but let me qualify that by saying that
1)i do like the song 2)r2t is worse.

ok. where do we start. (hmmmmm.....where will i finish.....)
when i posted that i somehow managed to find not only a redeeming value
for uttad satelite but also found out that i _like_ it, it was the product
of listening to uttad the night before in an effort to be as critical, but
at the same time, as open minded as i could be about the album. i found
great as fucking ever. but i decided these four songs held things that
#34 turned out to be absolutely incredible. i've talked about #34 and
satelite, so now i'll talk about ants and lover.

the reason i find the ants on uttad so annoying is that it's so damn hallow.
compare it to any live ants you have (on tape) and listen to the certain fills
that leroi and boyd do, well beyond the tired dueline violin/sopranosax thingy.
they just really filled up your ears with music that sounded right. they
took it all out on uttad and so it sounds like an empty scaffold of the song,
with part of the scaffold falling apart between the first and second verse
where dave decided to add a new chorus. it's obvious that my argument is
built upon knowing intimately what the song sounds like live, and having known
this since early 1992. i simply like it better. but at the same time,
i like uttad more than r2t because on r2t it's just simply weak. the whole
song is there, but it sounds processed, reprocessed, and pretty much if
i try to picture the song as an image in my head (something i'm fond of
doing with anything) it looks very faded and, well, tired.

but at the same time, every time i see the song live, i say something about
how sick we all are of it, but i don't go and get a beer, or go to the
bathroom. i stay right there with my deck or my friends or myself, dancing
and singing to it like it's only the third time i've ever heard it. and
then sometimes that song actually carries me away. if you ever have a chance
to hear ants on 2-22-94, it will kick your ass. not only because carter
rips the most intense drum jam which brings in boyd and leroi, but because
dave was feeling so good about playing it. before it started, he said
"you know, it's fucking great to be back" in front of a c-ville audience
he hadn't seen since 11-16-93. it's a good tune.

what i think the problem is on both uttad and r2t is that he was trying to
hard. they played it too slow for r2t, and then just sat there and played
the most standard version of it they possibly could because they were
afraid of screwing up (i suppose), and then on uttad they simply decided
to rewrite the song. what i'd like to know, though, is for those of you
who heard the song for the first time on uttad and have know heard it
live (a contigency of people that is probably very small at this point),
how do you think they compare. i'd like to know how the live version
fits into the ears of a person who is used to uttad.

why don't i like lover? everytime i try to enjoy where the song is taking
me, leroi appears. not that leroi is bad or anything, but it sounds
very "added." like they finished mixing the song and said "oh, we don't
have enough leroi in here" and then just played the song and let him
more or less goof off. i know there a plenty who will disagree with this,
but to me, by the time we get to where leroi takes his normal solo, i'm
getting tired of hearing him in there. but to me, that is the one song
that lost the most when they took away keyboards from it, and i've never
been able to appreciate quite as much as the version from 11-17-92.

sorry to be so winded. but i have a saturday afternoon to kill. thanx
for listening. to those who managed to get in on my tape offer, i'll
be in touch soon, probably tomorrow.

Catchy Songs

mcelvain@ucsu.Colorado.EDU Sat Dec 3 14:54:46 1994

Hi all;
popular tunes. It seem that every band has one or two songs that are
their trademarks. Dave has Ants and Sattelite, Blues Traveler has But
Anyway, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters have Bittersweet. These are
generally very catchy tunes that do a good job of showcasing the band's
style. These are also the songs that stick in peoples mind and motivate
them to go check out the band. That is good.
to them all the time, go to their shows, and collect their tapes, they
start to despise these songs. I am sure that part of the reason is that
they just get sick of them, which is understandable, but I think a little
unwarranted.
bittersweet, which is one of the most annoying songs ever unless it is
live) and are fun to listen to. In fact they are often the highlight of
the show because pretty much EVERYONE in the crowd knows and likes them,
therefore gets excited and starts to groove. I can't say that I would
dislike any song in concert that gets the crowd going and the band feeds
off that and gets into it too.
our little circle.

Before you order Valentines Day tickets!

sctm@vt.edu Sat Dec 3 15:02:53 1994

Rick is absolutely right about the Ticket Master rip off. But you might
want to consider the cheaper tickets. The Carpenter Center is very big,
and the acoustics are great throughout the building. I have seen a few
things ther and the balcony isn't that bad. But if you have money to burn
go for it! I just wanted to let everyone know that you won't be
disappointed if you buy the cheaper tickets. This is going to be hell
trying to get down tio Richmond on a Tuesday from way up here Blacksburg VA.
interested in getting together before the show and grabbing some dinner at
some place down there lets do it! 3rd Street Diner, Strawberry Street,
The Village, or maybe Joe's Inn? I would really love to meet some people!
At Lexington I was too 'busy' to try and find everyone. Take it easy everyone!

and yet more on copyright infringement....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sat Dec 3 15:23:15 1994

one of the things i like about the book ecotopia is that it creates
a world where music is music, and credit and who wrote it and who
played it and how many people should be listening to it aren't that
important.

that would be cool. you can't get famous, but then again, you can't
get psychotic people stalking you (and sometime killing you) and you
can't get large contingencies of people accusing you of selling out.

anyway, about he copyright thing, i agree with the statement tape all
you want, they'll make more. (uh-oh, is that a trademark violation?:)
but i also think that the blue screen situation is just a good way
of getting the music spread around. sort of like being turned on to
shannon worrell or the empty's via the aware II cd (granted, nandacket
records or whatever has permission).

from myself. :)

if chico came on the air one week and decided "hey, there's this great
new cd from one of the bands i highligh called 1.99 romances, and it's
by god street wine. i think it's such a great piece of work that i'm
going to highlight it for you this week" and then plays the whole thing,
and _then_ trees that show, he's up shit's creek. but i think mixing
in one song among many others, and then spreading that around he has
nothing to worry about. your copyright statements are more of a protection
scheme to protect themselves from loopholes than anything else.
occasionally the fbi gets a little rambunxious and throws someone in
jail, but i would sooner worry about winning the lottery.

(so ben, am i going overboard?)

V-day, Ants, etc....

PARISIGRE@urvax.urich.edu Sat Dec 3 16:08:42 1994

being blown away by what can only be an amazing version of Minarets. Anyway,
buying directly from Ticketbastard cash only outlets saves the $1 "processing
charge" (that's Regency Mall among other places for Richmonders). A word about

($49.50 I believe) are the best in the house. They are the first balcony which
hangs over about half of the floor seats and affords a very close view plus the
"overhead" angle, which is good. The front floor seats (49.50 as well) are
also really good, by virtue of their closeness. The $29.50 seats (which I
opted for) are the back half of the floor seats and the front of the second
balcony. IMHO, the price makes these seats the best value, unless you have
the cash or really want to impress someone. Finally, the 22.50 seats are the
far back balcony, which are still decent but it is worth the seven dollars to
get the better tix. The biggest detraction with this show is that the price andseating means that friends buying tickets at different times will not see each
other for the entire show. Much more condusive to having a date though.

growing old. I'm glad they altered it, as they often do from night to night
in their shows. Also, as far as marketing goes, I'm sure Dave and RCA (mostly
RCA) were conscious of the image projected by riffs and instruments and it
may be that the dueling banjos was too far into the realm of country music.
Although with such a variety of sounds already I don't see why that would
matter. I don't know, but many music fans are touchy about the country sound
and perhaps that is even why there is less Boyd in general on the album.

I like Ants on UTTAD though- to me it was always Steffan's bass line that
defined the song and that is still intact.

Also, add my name to the NYE list, whoever is doing that. BTW, rooms at the
Marriot are booked but the Raddison is just a few blocks away if people
really need a place to crash. Don't have the number on me.

Love is in the air.....

show, and so have a couple of you.....The question I have, and mentioned
briefly in my last post was that do you think that this show at the
symphony would go well with a somewhat more dressy theme.

you bring the smokes, I'll bring the quaters (do you think they'll ever
put a Dave Matthews disk in 3rd Streets Jute Box?) Any how, would anyone
else agree that getting a little dressed up for this event might be fun.
I mean it will be Valentines Day, and if I can russle up a date for my
other ticket, then going all fancy might be fun.

I am currently enjoying the calm before the storm, as far as studying
and exams go....so I am sitting here logged on as well watching messages
from myself pop up. I guess my complaining about high ticket prices
could have been avoided if I had just asked the lady from Ticket*asterd
if there were any cheaper seats. But I think that this is a once in a
life time thing that all should travel and come see.....

Catch ya later,

Penquins on the moon.

mus4rlm@cabell.vcu.edu Sat Dec 3 16:16:53 1994

hey all.

the long intro to Ants on R2T's has some significance to the
audience if not a downright power play by Carter.

when DMB started attracting larger and larger and larger still
crowds, they were jammin' cause people started to sing the words and
know the songs like they were a bedtime story of old. so Dave
realized that people were catching on to song intro's and such and
could see how psyched people would get when a certain song would
begin. certainly i have jumped up and down when the subtle intro to
Seek Up would start. that song used to put me on the moon with my
little Penguin friends and a bottle of Boones farm. sooooo....

heres what i'm trying to say......

We started catching on to the intro of ANTS when they used to throw
that song around in their setlists. they would play a song, then jam,
then Carter would go "tok,tok,tok,tok..." and the audience knew what
was coming. the march of the Ants. the march of us. we could'nt wait
to stomp our feet like a hillbilly hoedown in Boyd's solo, clanking beer
bottles or whatever else you could get yo' hands on. i usually beat
on my chest like Tarzan. it was a community groove. like a big drunk
drumcircle minus the drums('cept Carter's of course). a few shows
went like this...RecentlySweet Home AlabamaAnts. fun..fun..fun.
.....then Ants came to stand on its own once again......sooooo...
just the intro to Ants became important in psyching the crowd.....

so after all that babbling from the attic, this is what i'm trying

arms at the sound of one simple snare drum beat?

not many......
been looking for DMB to release something for over a year. and the
simple 30 second drum beat at the beginning of the CD was a call to
arms and saying to the audience "yes, yes, yes here we are on our
very own album, so get ready to jam with us in your living room."
it was sorda like Carter was talking to us using his other voice.
and it was so simple but it definitely meant something.

so there's my humble interpretation. i still stomp my feet.....

Re: snorky.

NebuIous@aol.com Sat Dec 3 16:29:34 1994

the reason i find the ants on uttad so annoying is that it's so damn hallow.

Exactly. It just sounds like crap. In the intro you can tell how odd the
violin and sax 'thing' (anyone have a better word for the
'buh..buhbuhbuh...buhbuhbuh...' deal?) sounds. I have only listened to that
part of the song once with headphones, but I think it's possible that either
Leroi isn't playing in that part at ALL and it's all violin, or another
reason which I won't get into on the net since people will either not
understand it or won't care.

song is there, but it sounds processed, reprocessed, and pretty much if
i try to picture the song as an image in my head (something i'm fond of
doing with anything) it looks very faded and, well, tired.

Though I haven't been able to fully enjoy the damn song for months now (in
any form...live...album...live album...), I don't think this is necessarily
true. The band COULD have made the song stand out. I think somewhere the
song just got fucked up. It was partly the fault of the band, but I think
it's possible that Mr. Big Shot Producer Who Has Worked With Lots of Big Time
Bands (steve lillywhite) never heard the song live enough to notice the
things that make, as I've stated before, 12 year old girls scream a la
Beatles on Sullivan.

and singing to it like it's only the third time i've ever heard it. and
then sometimes that song actually carries me away. if you ever have a
chance

This is definately true. But by now the song is such a standard song that
there is no emotion left in it at all. The only emotion I see is the energy
that the crowd, at least most of it, infuses into the band while they play
the song since so many people love it.

Oh, and the CD Lover isn't THAT bad. It's no 11/17, but it's okay...

Ants on UTTAD

dominic@raptor.sccs.swarthmore.edu Sat Dec 3 17:52:01 1994

let me just say that i am one of those dated kooks who got hooked on DMB by
Ants on R2T. i thought it was SO ballsy to to that huge Carter intro,
and i was psyched to hear Ants on UTTAD. and

only three hits to start it off!

the song continued to surprise me throughout, and i think Boyd and Leroi
have really outdone the dueling banjos riffs with their solos and backup.

so much so, that i am using the UTTAD Ants to do an a capella version of
the song. can i just say, this is one of the hardest things my group
(Sixteen Feet) has ever tried. i've had to dip into the 1/29/94 Tim and
Dave Wetlands show and the TRAX ??/??/92 show with Peter to round it out,
but that song is SO COMPLEX. First of all

Stephan goes off in the middle of the last break section (after Leroi's
moment of triumph), and

Carter is untouchable in this song. our vocal percussionist is going to
pop a blood vessel one of these days...

plus, i've really enjoyed the way the studio has treated Dave's voice on
this song. he hits all those "HE wakes up"s and the "WE look"s, and can
i also say that we are never going to get the DaveVoice that we want to,
but we'll keep trying.

i've seriously breached Feet Security by mentioning that we're doing this
song (it's a big secret, i want to surprise all the Swarthmore DMB fans),
but i really wanted to defend this song.

MY QUESTION FOR THIS POST IS.....
Could someone out there please explain to me what Blue Screen Shows are
I can't tell if they are a band, or a DJ by looking at the frequently
posted setlists. If they are a band, do they only perform covers?

person who had the COMPLETE ritz show from 9-29-94, as well as Danielle,
Kim, and the Juciy filler guy, I need to confirm trades with you three.

I'm sorry for the inconvienence but my physics server, "doc" as he is

Inbox got fried...
As for the current discussion aver ants...

Sooooo....here's the scoop"
heard several that are worse - we all know that dave likes to experiment
with styles and sounds, maybe he doesn't like it either. But the bottom

Oh and if my vote counts for anything I like the Screaming from the
minarets shirt idea and would be willing to draw up a design over the
break if we still need an artist.

This is a station that has America's House Party or something like it on
Saturday nights. A few weeks ago somebody posted their nightmare would be
to hear, "Coming up after this from Snoop Doggy Dogg, Ants Marching!" It
appears this has come true. Any thoughts on DMB being picked up by a Top

he's not saying anything, if i'm thinking of the right intro. it's just

the hallow cricket sounding thing in each measure. it's my favorite

ANTS!!!!!!!!

It seems as if this has become the Ants stopming network. Does anybody
else feel that ANTS is a quality song. It was stated that the intro
sounds hollow and weak;personally I love the ending. the sharp and
sudden drum with the fiddle and sax is premo.
frquently and will continue to eat it! Bands have songs by which they
are recognized. If you think of great bands there are certain songs that
stang out and are recognized as the trademarks of a band. Ants is
filling that role for DMB! Not every band can achieve the status of the
BEATLES or LED ZEPPELIN. Those are are teh exception! Only a few bands
can create only great songs! Dave, keep on doing whta you're doing. it
sounds great!

Re: Ants on UTTAD

well, i'd love too make these arguments on the net, but i've been really
posting too much lately. i just want everyone to see what i have to say,
 dammit. :)
that's ok, we don't mind... ;)
but i see something really cool in the fact that you want to do the song
acapella. but the thing is, i don't think i'd be able to listen to you
do it, and then say "oh, that's the uttad ants." i'd probably listen
to the song and say "wow, i've never heard ants marching played that way."
even if you do it exactly the same.

that's exactly what i'm looking for.

1) when the DMB fans in the audience
hear 2001, they'll think, "Oh, cool. That's a strange sound they're
making... wait, deja vu... nahh."

2) then, we'll hit em with the riff.

3) your reaction (hopefully).

4) then, we end with a snippit from Lover Lay Down. didja ever notice
that the last words of Ants, "Lights down you up and die," can be
relplaced by "Spring sweet rhythm dance in my head"? same notes from
LLD, but with the Ants beat. it's coming together...

 your talking about doing something
with that song that's never even been imagined (well, i'm sure it's
been imagined, but you get my picture, right?). but it doesn't change
the fact that i think that the way dave has always done it suits the
song better in terms of the sounds created by the dave matthews band.

i agree. live Ants is one of the best things about Dave Band.
if i were in a 16 voice group,

no. Sixteen FEET. eight guys.

and for those in the Philadelphia/Swarthmore area, the Jamboree is the
7th(Wednesday) and 10th(Saturday) of December. do come 'if you like a
mobu jobu' (-Dave, plugging Recently)

laters, ya'll

Atlanta Gathering

I'm almost positive that we'll have some type of net gathering before the
Dec. 27 show in Atlanta. I've received enough responses, I think, to
constitute a gathering. If you're interested, please write me a message
with Atlanta or Gathering in the subject.

Furthermore, I'd like to get some input on how anyone would like to see
this happen (including those who already responded). Would you want to
meet somewhere way before the show, an hour before the show, or just at the
show? Our numbers will probably help define what we'll do, but the two
options I've been considering are dinner or meeting at a park in Atlanta
(or both).
If you're going, try to help make this happen.

really add a lot to Phish, but we got the feeling that they only knew
certain Phish songs, which detracted from the variety of the shows. The
DMB played well, with a more unique set than last night. They seemed to be
more intent on playing well than impressing the crowd, which they did last
night.

DMB

(once again I missed at least one song)
Best of What's Around
Rhyme & Reason
All Along the Watchtower
Recently
True Reflections
Ants Marching

PHISH

Set I
-----
Wilson
Divided Sky
Guelah Papyrus
Scent of a Mule
Eastern European sounding jam
Run Like an Antelope
Colonel Forbin's Ascent
Sample in a Jar

Set II w/ GCH
-------------

Suzy Greenberg
Gumbo?
Slave to the Traffic Light
Same ? as Set II last night
Cmon, Cmon, Cmon Touch Me Babe (Fishman singing and dancing, Trey on drums)
Don't Take Another Step
Cavern

-encore- (alone)
Golgi Apparatus

Dave, but what can you do? Highlights for me with the DMB were Watchtower
(which I had never heard live) and True Reflections (they played this two
nights ago also, are they bringing it back?). Boyd was on tonight, with
slower, groovier jams than usual, more lead fiddle than rhythm fiddle.
Steffan was also playing better than usual, IMHO.

Wilson, Divided Sky and Colonel Forbin's Ascent again (I prefer a few
Gamehenge songs rather than a full set), and Run Like an Antelope, Guelah,
and especially Scent of a Mule, which had that E. European jam and another
great piano solo, were great.
Gumbo and Don't Take Another Step, Golgi was a really good encore, but
Touch Me, Babe easily stole the show for me. Trey moved in on drums (I
didn't know he could play so well!) and Fishman went crazy singing and
dancing (no Vacuum though).

Hoping for a great one from Dave tonight in San Francisco!!

Sound Files

mahoncha@nag.cs.colorado.edu Sun Dec 4 15:48:49 1994

I tried FTPing the sound files from the DMB directory. What format are
these files in? Their extensions are .au? but my windows recorder says it
can't recogonize the type and their not valid WAV format...

Any info would be appreciated.

V-DAY

REIDENOUE@urvax.urich.edu Sun Dec 4 15:51:35 1994

I think meeting before the Symphony show on Valentine's Day is a great
idea. It will make a memorable experience even more memorable. I also
support the dessing-up deal. I'm not talking black-tie or anything, but
neat attire seems more appropriate. Dressing up and sitting down for a
Dave show? I don't know. I'm excited and all, but I've adopted the
wait-and-see attitude. One thing's for sure, I'm looking forward to
meeting all you (enter favorite Dave fan label here) from around the
some other fine places? I'd feel kind of funny at 3rd St. in a shirt and
tie (and pants). How about Bottom's Up, Coyote, Richbrau, or something
like that? Just throwing out suggestions...

Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming (RCA) (w/ picture of CD)

Blends of dreamy shifting melodies and airy arrangements make the Dave
Matthews Band's music surge with energy and excitement. Listen closely to
the South African Matthews' voice, which a times sounds like Robert Plant's.
                                                        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

WHY do people keep saying this??????????????????
this is the second time i've seen dave compared to robert plant, and not
that i don't like plant (hey, zeppelin helped me figure the six-string out),
but it's simply not true. dave doesn't sound a thing like robert plant.

why?
why?
why?
and _no_ i don't like bud dry. (new amsterdam winterfest on the other hand....)

I completely understand what you are saying, I have never compared the 2
myself, but at the same time, I see where the comparison can come from.
Both have a pretty amazing range, both have a very emotional/a lot of
heart, type sound, and Dave does do a pretty strange Stairway to Heaven.
But for the most part I agree, the comparison is indeed a stretch. I have
always thought Dave was a total nasal singer. If I pinch my nose and sing,
I can almost make Satellite sound like Satellite, not really, but I tell
myself that to keep my seld esteem up! Anyway, 'Talk amongst yourselves!'

"well, well uh...yeah"--dave, 11-9-94, say goodbye

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sun Dec 4 16:33:53 1994

these are my favorite two lines of the header to these things.
"open discussion for the dave matthews band." ha. haha.

and wouldn't it be neat to be know as anastasios kotsikonas.
we should start calling our bagby's "kotsikonas'" tee-hee.

I think meeting before the Symphony show on Valentine's Day is a great

how about a place we know we can get everyone other than myself into.
i know bottom's up is of age, and i assume that since richbrau is a
brewery, it's of age. and if you feel funny _at all_ going to 3rd st,
maybe you shouldn't be at 3rd street.

sorry. clare, explain my bluntness to everyone.

anway, like i said, i was thinking of the balcony at third st. we'd
be our own little group and nobody would care whether you/we are dressed
up. i tend to be somewhat rugged, myself. if my shirt even has buttons,
i'm dressed up. so every time i go to 3rd st with clare, i feel like
she's dressed up, simply because she likes to wear dresses.

and also, since the debate on lableing started/finished, i've noticed alot
of people saying "enter favorite dave fan label here." now, i'm among those
who don't care what you call me, or why you call me that, but i don't
particularly want to be know as an "efdflhere." i think it might be kind
of cool to meet some _people_ at this gathering and what not. their may
even be people their who have no clue as to the workings of this net. they
just came because i friend invited them. and while on this net, i have
no qualms with being referred to as a dave.netter, because that's something
that i cannot deny that i am.

the fact that i can't be explained/described/labelled for liking dave band
doesn't mean that we have to be so ambiguous about our association with this
net, eh?

End the Discussion

50OGLESBY@CUA.EDU Sun Dec 4 19:19:54 1994

hey now,
i am sorry, but i can't handle 70 messages of ants talk. I like the song,
but do we need to talk about it somuch? to end this conversation, i will
lisner show on nov8, i met three of the dmb record executives. they were
really nice, and one gave me a 6th row ticket for free. anyway, they said
that dave didn't want ants on the album but they pushed him to do it so
hard that he did. that is why it is on there. also, they played what would
you say on that radio show, because it will be their 1st video.
