Road Trip!!!

rhynig@aron01.jany.gs.com Tue Dec 13 19:05:39 1994

This is for any DMB fans in the NYC area -

A friend and I are planning on renting a car, driving down to DC on the Friday
night,
seeing the show, and driving back up on Saturday ( a Drive Down, Drive Up kind
o' thing :) ).

So... if there is anyone who is interested in making a little road trip, meeting
some other netters, and seeing
the band, we're looking for 2-3 people to come with us and possibly share some
of the costs.

If you're interested, please drop one of us a line and let us know.

Gavin - rhynig@aron01.jany.gs.com

ALL RIGHT. STOP. HE DIDN'T MEAN IT!!!!!!

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Dec 13 19:22:56 1994

When does his new album come out, and does any one know
whats on it. Thanks Clarke

alright, so he fell asleep in bed with a lit cigarette in his hand.
let's be easy on him. maybe they don't sell under the table and
dreaming where he's from, so i don't want to see any "where have
you been for the last two months" posts.

and no, i'm not chastising him. i'm actually chastising all of
you who are just dying to captialize on this opportunity to flame,
because we all saw what happened to carly.

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Tue Dec 13 19:23:04 1994

and there's a little paragraph about groups who've been on the two discs and
what they're doing now. It says that Vertical Horizon has an album coming out
in Janurary and Carter plays the drums on it. Where do they get the time?!!

#34 track name

tomwa@jsbus.com Tue Dec 13 19:23:57 1994

Do you know what I really can't stand about UTTAD? It's the
empty tracks
leading up to #34.
- Mike

I thought that nameing the track #34 for the song 34 was totally
cool. I noticed in my car deck and thought that the deck was
screwing up (it does, often). When I realised what was going on I
thought that it was a clever, creative use of technology.

My 2 cents for today ...\

please stop loving me.. i am none of these things

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Tue Dec 13 20:28:48 1994

Are we not taking this taping thing a little far? Getting hot Dave tapes
form the board or otherwise is not a right we have, it is a privelege.
Stealth taping is not a thing that should be done at a show, that's how
we lose the privelege to get ANY tapes. And i don't think any of us want
that. I would immagine someone close to the band or management reads
minatets occasionally, what would they think if they see all this stealth
taping stuff? Of course I would LOVE to get a copy of this show, and as
long as we don't abuse our privelege to tapes I think we will get one.

 Peace & Out...

 Japhy

ah ha ha... i chuckle kind sir. i must be one of whom you speak of in
the above paragraph.

yes.. management does have access to this net.
and yes, people close to the band have access to this net (identities

so.. that means.. that they are reading all this stuff and sitting back
and laughing at the 'stealth taping' jokes that we have posted. HARK!!
what was that word i just used... could it be? 'joke'? why yes! it was...
i did not try to lead myself on a strayed path..... i did say 'joke'.
(do you really think i'd put a pair of mic's down the top of my strapless
formal? you surely jest. do you really think i'd allow myself to be seen
with buford if he had this huge bulge in his pants? (the DAT being the
bulge, i mean.. now now. you dirty minded-kiddies. slap slap on the wrists.)

anyway.. the point of this all is that we are being jubilant and fun by
thinking up creative ideas to tape the show. this doesn't mean we're
actually planning on doing that very thing. besides... if we WERE (sly
look on clare's face....) why would we tell you all our undercover
methods in public in such a way as this forum?
never underestimate the power of a woman.

what? did you say clutchbag/DAT, pearl necklace mics? what? is that what
you said? cigarettes/tapedeck, tube-of-lipstick/mics? what?
i must have heard you all wrong.. must've...[wink]

[deep bellowing laughter......]

the spooning will most certainly resume after exams. we all deserve lots
of cuddles and warmth from those we love...
*spoon* *spoon* *spoon* [the chants arise from the bowels of the earth]
clare 'undercover' emily

kev-q... smoking is most certainly expected of you in my messages.

'the ocean doesn't want me today, but i'll be back tomorrow to play. i'll go in
up to here, it can't possibly hurt. all they will find is my beer and my shirt.

disappointment in DMB making a video. What's the big deal? You people
have to stop thinking that all of your music "heroes" are in the business
for anything but money. DMB is no exception. Personally, I have never
bought a CD from a band other than Dave Matthew's that had an additional
insert hawking merchandise
with the band logo on it. Why does it surprise you that Dave wants to
get popular and go for the big money? I don't really see anything wrong
with it. No more wrong than Eddie Vedder pretending to be so upset at
being popular. If he hates it so much then why doesn't he quit? Also, I
don't get the anger (though hidden) at the band becoming so popular.
What makes you any better than any other fan that was not lucky enough to
hear the DMB when their career was just beginning? It seems that you who
are so weary of greed are guilty of it yourselves. Anyway, I suppose
that I will not be very popular from now on.

might like a copy to apise me, mail either me or Cory Rayborn

Tapes of Dave/Tim 8/?/94 Birchmere?

abaraff@MACALSTR.EDU Tue Dec 13 23:05:46 1994

Dear Minarets,
and Tim show from this past August at the Birchmere in Alexandria,
Virginia. I'm not sure of the exact day of the show, but this was my
sister's first time seeing Dave (in any form) and it led to her current
Dave addiction. I'd love to be able to present that tape to her with the
ticket I got her for 12/30 for x-mas if it's humanly possible. If anybody
out there has a tape of it and could help me out (even if it would be after
the holidays), that would be truly amazing. I've only got 10 Dave tapes to
offer as trades, but I've also got about 100 hours of Phish (including
Richmond from this summer, both Patriot Center shows {very HQ}, and
Halloween.) I would also be willing to send blanks and return postage.
Any help would be quite appreciated.

I'm kind of getting tired of reading all of your messages about your
disappointment in DMB making a video. What's the big deal? You people

I'm not upset he made a video, I just hope its not ungodly overplayed.
Eitehr way, if it gets people to like him and stay hooked, all the better.

have to stop thinking that all of your music "heroes" are in the business
for anything but money. DMB is no exception. Personally, I have never

I dont think they started for the money, obviously because it took them
so long to make it. They enjoy playing, or they wouldnt tour nonstop.
Peter left because he was unhappy, not broke.

bought a CD from a band other than Dave Matthew's that had an additional
insert hawking merchandise with the band logo on it.

Good point but...look at all the Dead merchadise they sell, people make
businesses out of it. The dead dont need the ca$h, but they know the fans
with think its cool shit. Like the tobaggan hat, it rocks...

 get popular

this doesn't

Sounds like he's playing the lotto or something (no whammy, no whammy)

with it. No more wrong than Eddie Vedder pretending to be so upset at
being popular. If he hates it so much then why doesn't he quit?

I wont touch this, this could start big wars...

What makes you any better than any other fan that was not lucky enough to
hear the DMB when their career was just beginning? It seems that you who

we're dont think we're better, just lucky, and we get reminiscent at
times. I would still much rather catch dave at flood zone for five bucks
every wednesday nite and get killer tapes each time. I know its never
gonna happen again, I just like to reminisce. I'm happy alot of people
like him, at least now when I say "Carter is the shit!" my friends know
what I am talking about.

are so weary of greed are guilty of it yourselves.

Im not weary of greed, i admit i have it. Yes I want a DAT, yes a want a
sweet car, yes I want bose speakers....
I just dont want greed to change the music...and I don't think Dave will
let it...

that I will not be very popular from now on.

We'll forget who wrote in in a few weeks if not sooner. everyone has the
right to express their opinions...

previously familiar with the band) who had just bought the new disk. As it
turns out, he was extremely turned off by the inclusion of the merchandise

really suprising considering it is their first big-label release.

it's 11:20. and i'm tired. i'm tired of being awake, so i should

you know, it's a bad thing to be this tired when you plan on staying
up until 6am playing dave matthews for anyone who wants to listen.

granted, you have to live in harrisonburg to listen. but if you do,
then listen. it should be fun. i found lots of neat dave talk. i'm
not tired of dave talk. just talking.

and also, taping valentine's day won't be a problem. i've already

vine all over the net that holds them up. they be hot copies, too.

rare dave tree

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Tue Dec 13 23:41:02 1994

ok----- most of you know the story. ,,,,,,,,,for those of you that don't ----
not too confusing, huh?

so here's rest of the story, just in case you forgot, or didn't know in the
first place, or whatever. boofy is going to do this after break, but since
he already okayed a tree of it, I am going to try to get a head start on the
forms, since I know there will be a lot of em. if you don't want to fuck with
this now, then dont-- it will be posted a couple of times after the break.
I'll do it more than once since I don't know when everyone comes back from
break, and we don't want anyone to miss out on it.

I don't know (at this time) how many tapes or what kind or anything else
because the tape(s) is/are not in existance yet. So we'll just have to hope
that he doesn't get bored over break and fill up 75 tapes, rendering all of
us penniless for the semester........ as for the form, it is a basic one
(well, basic enough, anyway). just cut it out or copy it, or whatever,
and send it to me koliver1@ua1vm.ua.edu . Now, obviously, for a tree with
all of dave's rareties, many people will be interested. So, one big thing
I ask of all of you, is that you don't post the forms to minarets. That would
be incredibly irritating. If you have some sort of problem with my address,
then reply to this message, but I would prefer if you cut the form out.

for those who offered help (dusty, kev, doug, greg, and everyone else) I will

oh, and also -- indicate whether you want this tape on metal tapes or not --

or whatever you want to give him, for making this tape. As he said, he will
try to cover all the bases, which will undoubtedly take a lot of effort. But
So thank him in your head, or write him a nice post card, or pat him on the
head, or something. dont flood his box, just because I said to say thanks.

===========================================================================

if branch -- how many copies are you willing to spin?:

=====================================================================

for the # of tapes willing to spin, give me a range, since we don't know how
many tapes it will be, yet.

I will post the results of the poll as well.

any questions or whatever and all forms to koliver1@ua1vm.ua.edu

ok......go

Dave rarities tape update..

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Wed Dec 14 01:32:07 1994

I don't know (at this time) how many tapes or what kind or anything else
because the tape(s) is/are not in existance yet. So we'll just have to hope
that he doesn't get bored over break and fill up 75 tapes, rendering all of
us penniless for the semester........ as for the form, it is a basic one

Here's my current plan. After rounding off my collection of about 50
tapes I and listend to lots of them during exams, I realized that this is
gonna be more than one tape, but not 75...hehe

I want to compile a rarities and best of kinda tape. So while One Sweet
World might not be rare, I will put my fav old version with peter on this
tape. Also I am planning to have duplicate versions of songs. The
1)drive in, drive out is so rare i feel compelled to put a solo and band
version on this tape.
2)the gnarly warehouse jam from election nite and the funky intro
warehouse from 7-14-93 are both one of a kind.
3)phish/dmb watchtower ...nuff said, but you have to hear 10-27-92 with
dave talking and singing about dope in amsterdam
4)you get the point, i dont want to give away everything...

oh yeah, there will be an Ants on this, its a beautiful version...

Be forewarned. the quality will have its large variations. My 4th gen one
of a kind version of #34 will not sound as clear as my master of Granny,
but hey, its worth it. Some sacrifices have to be made.

I plan to use Maxell XL II 's. I like em, and I can charge em home...(shh
dont tell my parents)

I will also use my ungodly computer talents to type up a tape cover on
microsoft word, listing each date and venue and maybe a reason why I put
it on the tape (in small font). I will xerox a bunch to send to keith
with his tapes. I'm assuming as you all tree, you can xerox also. I dont
want this to end up being labled as some random incredible show in a year
or something (i also want my name to pop up in everyones tape case hehe :-))

awww i feel so good now...
Money and New Year's tickets can be sent to below address hehehe
Anyone wanna take me to Atlanta from Richmond on dec 26 to see DMB and my
girlfriend on the 27th... :-)

some wacked out sh*t! The piece you got is actually called
4'33", nothing but silence, but if you see it performed "live", then the
structure of the piece just has the pianist open and close the keyboard silently
at VERY specific points. Crazy.
ANYway- Now I will post something relavent to Dave...

Re: Debunking this silly north.pole gag -- NOT A GAG

bmking@mail.wm.edu Wed Dec 14 16:33:26 1994

I find it highly unlikely that this post circulating about
north.pole.org and SUN Microsystems has any truth to it.
I checked with the InterNIC Registration Services and found that
the following domain names are *not registered*:
    north.pole.net
    north.pole.com
    north.pole.org
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT spam this site with copies of your emails,
believing that some company is going to magically aid the homeless or
some other such B.S. If you cram Santa's mailbox with worthless junk,
he won't be able to answer children's email, which is the purpose of
the service. There's only so much time between now and Christmas, you
know.
Think twice before believing "too good to be true" postings.

Well, it's too bad we have to doubt tidings of good news like this.
Fortunately, I don't think we do.

I have mailed santa@north.pole.org and elves@north.pole.org and have received
automated responses from them. Also, I remember reading in the washington
post (they usually have fairly true stuff..) that companies would donate
$0.10 every time a ... ok, I just waded through 2 weeks of style sections
(don't even ask why we have 2 weeks of papers lying around.. at least
they're in a stack. :) Thursday, December 8. According to the article,

them Sun Microsystems and Friedman, Billings, Ramsey, & Co of Arlington) have
user accesses one of these pages, the charity receives a donation of 10
cents."

It doesn't mention mailing santa@north.pole.org, but I _assume_, given the
article and the automated responses I have received, that sending a message
will give the same results..

so, I say cram their mailboxes and maybe they'll feed the homeless or "some
other such B.S."...

[forwarded to dmb and bt nets to get more distribution]

happy holidays and be love,
brett

For those DMB fans who will be in DC for Dave at AU but didn't get DMB
NYE tickets, Blue Miracle is playing at the Bayou on NYE
and I can promise you a great time, if you decide to
check them out. They are an incredible band and you won't
be able to stop dancing. The band is comprised of a percussion

Big Time!!! he he

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Wed Dec 14 19:00:50 1994

O.K., since everyone seems to think that a video, good or bad, will shoot him
into the big time, I should let you know that local bands (at least one) down
here are already doing covers of Dave's songs. Imagine my suprise last Friday
night when I walked into a local bar (30-something crowd type place) to see a
band that one of my friend's brother plays in. Whew, that's hard to get out.
Any way, this cover band (Live Bait, they're actually pretty good) was playing
along--little Blues Trav., little Dead, little Band, but mostly "classic
rock"--and suddenly I hear the oh so familiar beginning of WWYS?. Small town,
small bar, small time band, DMB cover. IMHO if a band can get covered in a
small hick town in a 30-something bar, that is a bigger indicator of potential
stardom than eMpTy-Vee. Please keep in mind that Farm-Vegas is not your typical
college town so bands here don't play music catering to the college crowd.
Anyway, exams suck and I need all the luck I can get. Luckily I have 5 new
shows (thanks Che!) to get me through exams.

I'm running out of cigarettes and the bookstores closed, film at eleven.

Ok, well, I assumed, and one should never assume.

Mailing santa@north.pole.net won't do much except get you an automated
response.. And no, it won't cause companies to donate anything to
anyone.

If you have a web browser (lynx, mosaic, netscape), though, I would
cause companies to donate some bucks.

I apologize if anyone spent their time mailing santa, the elves, and even
rudolph in the hopes it would do some good like I did.

take care,

FWD: A logistical nightmare for being a big fat elf

are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer
which only Santa has ever seen.

rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes
there's at least one good child in each.

jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining
presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up
the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house.
around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the
purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78
miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting
stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus
feeding and etc. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles
per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison,
the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, theUlysses space probe, moves at a
poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15
miles per hour.

Ways to REALLY help people...

jgraves@world.std.com Thu Dec 15 15:36:43 1994

Greetings all!

Considering the sheer volume of mail that has been generated regarding
this 10 cent donation to children's charities for every piece of email
received etc. etc. etc. I thought I would post a few other ideas which
will have a much more direct and dramatic impact on some people who

1) Provide one family with a holiday meal. Package an entire meal of
non-perishable goods (canned ham, veggies, dry milk, canned fruit,
dessert, whatever you can think of), gift wrap it and drop it off at a local
food pantry. Cost = about $25 and an hour or so of your time

2) give money to a homeless shelter or children's charity.
Cost = whatever you can afford

3) give your time to a homeless shelter, particularly AFTER the
holidays. Spend an evening just helping out. It costs you only one
evening of your life and your time is ten times more valuable than your
money to some of these groups. Ask around

4) collect old clothes and blankets from your house/dorm/neighborhood and
give them to a shelter. Cost = a few hours

5) donate toys to a Toys-for-tots program (bins found in most malls
nation-wide)

6) give your change to salvation army bell-ringers.

& Finally,

7) talk to your family about doing something nice, as a family, for people
you don't even know. In my family, at my mom's suggestion, we now only
exchange stocking-stuffers and spend the money that would normally go to
more expensive presents on holiday meals (see #1 above) for hungry
families in our town. Consider this or some similar option. You won't
believe how good this makes you feel and how much it means to the
recipients of your anonymous goodwill.

I have tried very hard to not sound "better-than-thou"-ish. These are all
just suggestions on how to help others, since it seems a LOT of people
here are interested in doing that. Do with them what you will.

this has been posted to multiple net groups, so some uf you will see this
more than once. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Peace and a joyful season to you all,
jerm

Does anyone know the song "Eiko, Eiko Aye Yay."
Well anyways, my friend and I have been talking about it for awhile and
decided that it would be extremely cool if Dave sang that song. If you
don't remeber it, it goes something like this(to spark your memory). Oh
Yea, be careful because this song might get stuck in your head like it
has mine for the last week or so.
"My grandma and your grandma, sitting by the fire
Your grandma says to my grandma, I'm gonna lite your heart on
fire, talkin' bout aye now, aye now, aye now, ayenow, Eiko, Eiko
Aye Yay......"

I can't remember the rest and I don't even know if those are the right
lyrics, but you should be able to get the point. I'd love for Dave to
cover it, it's a very friendly campfire song that you all have probably
had the opportunity to sing at your respective summer camps.

it's actually "iko iko", although some choose to spell it "aiko aiko". i
don't remember the original author/artist who did it, but it has become a
dead staple that many a fan hopes will open the 2nd set of the show. If
you've ever been to a dead show, and all the fans clap ion rhythm during
the set break, they're clapping the Iko rhythm(although it oculd also be
NFA, actually - the two are pretty close).

Don't quote me here but i swear i remembering watching some television
show and they said that the originial version came from feuds in the
Bayou of the Mississippi and may be other parts of LA. As i remember it

I saw Johnny Clegg and Savuka in Madrid last November and they were really
good. He speaks a lot of different languages and is obviously very
intelligent. This semester I picked up their greatest hits album and I
must say that it sucks. Some of the songs are too synthesizer-heavy.
Once again, the nightmare of a talented band who try to produce their
albums too much because the record company tells them to. But I would
recommend checking them out live.

Clegg cover NYe and Beatles....

mus4rlm@cabell.vcu.edu Thu Dec 15 16:47:22 1994

hey all.

the Marriott...or ever...but its not like i have an omniscient view
of Dave covers or anything...i am mere mortal stuck in the clothing
of the gods....what??!#z4?...i tweek myself out sometimes...

anyway, while i was purusing the fragments of me mind last evening i
came across two things....
into the flood zone at about 8 o'clock when there was not a soul to
be seen, i stumbled upon Dave on stage about to sound check his
voice. i scrambled to soundboard to try and get it on tape.
i plugged into the board and hark...no signal... Jeff just looked
at me and smiled a green smile and seemed to say " forget it kid I'M
AT WORK,you'll get your feed soon enuff..." at least thats what his
eyes seemed to say. i completely understood and prepared myself to
enjoy the moment to the fullest. Dave strummed a couple more chords
and proceeded to play "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"
by the Beatles...awwwww man, damn wish that deck was rolling...oh
well...it was recorded in my mind...so if anyone wants a copy,
you'll have to find me in the flesh and i'll sing it to ya'!!!

outside and you know what happened...i thought some more...oh
well..i first remembered the above story and then remembered this. a
long time ago i watched two pine trees in my backyard swaying. they
seemed to be hugging and kissing...yea that sounds strange but i've
also communicated with a plant(save that story for another time)...
sooo i became fascinated with these trees making love before my eyes
and to the sky. i then felt a sort of weird watching feeling..an
embarrrassed feeling...so i turned away and let them do their leafy
stuff...sooo last nite i tried to find those trees...it was
hard..then suddenly they appeared from the forrest foreground and
they were still going at it...wow trees belittle human lovemaking...
anyway these words streamed in my head with the help of the moon...

Mailing santa@north.pole.net won't do much except get you an automated

I just thought I'd write and say how glad I am that everyone is so supportive
of worthy causes, such as helping out with all of these charitable
orginazations. Most people our age are so apathetic about the world around
them. Others talk alot but fail to do anything. I just thought I'd send out a
big touchy-feely kinda thank you for all the compassion this net is showing. I
just hope that it's not restricted to this holiday season, let's do what we can
EVERYDAY to help those in need. Oh, by the way, so this isn't totally non-DMB,
I think Dave should cover "The Women are Smarter." It's the same (I believe)
musical pattern as "Aiko Aiko", but I like the lyrics more. It's another
Dead/JGB staple, although it isn't played half as much as "Aiko Aiko." One more
thing, if ANYBODY is still out there, could you please *please, please* send me
the tab files, I'm leaving tomorrow and I need them for a friend. Thanks a
mucho.
"It's not me, it's the people who say 'The men are leading the women astray.'
I say that the women today are smarter than the man in every way."

P.S.-While I'm on the JGB tangent, I'm still looking for the 11/12?/93 show

Shannon Worrell....&..emily what are you doing?

allgood@umich.edu Fri Dec 16 14:34:31 1994

Just a quick one....today after driving back from Ann Arbor realty where
I signed my lease for school next year my buddies and I were listening
to the radio(a rarity) and I heard a lady singing"Every little thing she
does is magic"---the old Police tune, and it sounded very familiar to me
but I couldn't quite place the voice right away. Then, as I sipped away
on my S.Pellegrino, it came to me that it had a very Nantucket like
feeling to me. (Now actually...,this all went through mey head much
faster than this message portrays). The coincidences were astounding, the
S.Pellegrino(an Italian sparkling water) was served at the restaurant
that I worked at and this song was playing!!!So afteer a little shuffling
and running the lyrics "almost and angel...." through my head, it came to
me that it was none other than Shannon Worrell. Edie Brickel and Margo
Timmins(Cowboy Junkies) were going through my head, but it definitly had
a Shannon feeling..... now, they never said it on the radio station but
I am 100% sure that it was her. So, did anyone out there know that she
had been singing this or is it a relatively knew tune. To say the least,
it sent a chill down my spine, her voice is strikingly beautiful. Kinda
like a girl that you would love to take to a log cabin out in the woods
somewhere in the mountains. Hell....maybe that's just a dream.
school. This net has been so dead and noone is really friendly right
now. Maybe everyone went home...lookin very forward to NYE and the 30th,
it should be a very good time that everyone will share stews at. Well,
that should be my last post to the whole net for a long time. Possibly
about 4 months, you see, overseas is calling my name out. I hope this
thing doesnt' change to much, there justight be a lot of new faces. I
hope that all the regulars don't get discouraged in writing as much as
they used to, it's always good to read comments that you pretty much no
the person from there frequency....or do you? Well, is anyone else out
there going on that Semester at Seas program, through the University of
Pittsburgh. It should be a FINE time, full of stews and new friendly
faces. And as emily knowes, there is nothing like meeting a person and
then through contact, getting to know that person, it's one of the most
fulfiling things in the world. CONTACT.

Does anyone know the song "Eiko, Eiko Aye Yay."
Well anyways, my friend and I have been talking about it for awhile and
decided that it would be extremely cool if Dave sang that song. If you
"My grandma and your grandma, sitting by the fire
Your grandma says to my grandma, I'm gonna lite your heart on
fire, talkin' bout aye now, aye now, aye now, ayenow, Eiko, Eiko
Aye Yay......"

oh yeah....
wasn't that written by the bangles?

anyway, i logged on to my account today, and found that mail to
14 different people got bounced today, as in lyrics file and
faq file and stuff. i don't know what's up. usually this means
that something is wrong with jmu's internet access through uva.

my system has told me that it will continue to try and send the
files through for another 10 days or so, but usually when this sort
of thing happens, i just get inundated with lots and lots and lots
of bounced mail for 10 days.

anyway, if you haven't recieved these files by the time you get

but as a matter of fact, every time i've played shannon worrell on

MINARETS digest 395

I forget the name of the artist, but Iko Iko was recorded
originally by one of those black all girl bands in the late 50s
or maybe early 60s. Here in Santa Cruz every summer we have
weekly free concerts on the beach where washed up bands from the
50s and 60s come and play. Davey Jones from the Monkees, Martha
Vandrel, The Shirels, Flo and Eddie from the Beach Boys/Zappa,
bands like that. The girls that wrote Iko Iko came and played it
for us at one of these free shows.

Hi folks!
Interesting to hear Johnny Clegg come up here! I know it does make sense,
but so few people in the states have ever heard of Savuka. When I first
saw them live in South Africa back in 1987, they were still Jaluka.
Yes...they have gotten much more produced and more western influences in
their sound...but the soul and ryhthm is *quite* african. Anyway...doubt
DMB would cover their stuff because of differing styles. But, who
knows? a traditional version of Siyayilanda would be cool, or Asimbonanga
even :)

Austin Tower Performance

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Fri Dec 16 16:46:58 1994

Wow!

Just got home (after running like a maniac through the pelting rain) from
the band's appearance at Tower Records in Austin. Dave, Boyd, and Stefan
played a sweet little set for about 100 people. It was hot and cramped, but
the crowd was very respectful (actually, sometimes almost too quiet I think).
Dave was baked -- lots of great Davetalk as he babbled on and on about partying
with Everything and Little Sister (a really good Austin band). Most of the
crowd seemed only to know UTTAD, but were appreciative even when they weren't
familiar with a tune. They played without a setlist, doing pretty much
whatever the crowd yelled for (but suprisingly, no Ants or Satelite!).

so on a whim I shout out, "Drive In, Drive Out"! He kinda smiles and says,
"Oh, that one" and without skipping a beat launches into it!! I think I was
one of the few in the store who knew it, but it was amazing to hear it. (I
talked to him after the show and he said they were definetly bringing it back,
but they haven't had a break to work it back up again...we shall see).

Nancies, Granny, Two-step, Jimithing, Say Goodbye, Drive In Drive Out,
Recently (with the Take me to the River, Norweigian Wood, Some People do/don't
intro).

It was great to see them after so many months. Even though it wasn't the full
band I think they're sounding great. My semester is over and I'm looking
forwrd to my three-day roadtrip!!! Gotta go dry off now and get ready for the
show tonight.

Good luck to those who haven't finished yet. Brett -- I miss you, are you
alive??

Austin, Texas in review

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Fri Dec 16 16:46:59 1994

Hi all! Just returned from tonight's show in Austin. Very solid show, if
a little uninspired (with a few flashes of absolute brilliance I think).
The crowd wasn't too bad -- most seemed to be UT students, and everyone
was pretty well behaved. It was pretty obvious that the band tailored the
setlist to appeal to those who only know the CDs -- but everything they played
sounded really good, and I talked to a few people who had never even heard of

Seek Up
Nancies
Warehouse
Jane
Help Myself (good to hear this!)
Satelite (with a long teaser intro)
Billies
Pay For What You Get
Rhyme & Reason
Jimithing (really long, extended jam -- very cool.)
Lover
True Reflections (nicely done)
Recently -- #36
Ants
Christmas Song (very beautiful, but almost ruined by rude crowd noise)
Watchtower

So the setlist was pretty standard, but even now I still can't get over what
a tremendous band they are. Even their most basic show still blows me over!
Gotta go sleep now. . .see some of you in Houston tomorrow??

(yawn)

J. Clegg

SRH1111@delphi.com Fri Dec 16 19:39:44 1994

not going to rehash this again, and my memory is far from perfect, but I
am more inclined to remember music related occurances than what I had for
breakfast this morning. Dave not only played a Johnny Clegg song last
nye but he even announced it from the stage before he started!! I swear!!
The next week I acquired some of his stuff and have been enjoying it ever
since. Can anyone out there back me up on this one??

11/11/94 tree :-(

messierb@ucsuc.Colorado.EDU Fri Dec 16 19:58:36 1994

I am very sad to announce that I still have not recieved my seed for the
11/11/94 Wait Chapel show. What does that mean to you? Well in a few
hours (5:00am) I will be leaving for a nice fun 30 hour drive home.
Since I did not get the tapes yet I don't think I will be able to get
them out to you before X-Mass like I said. Sorry 8-(. But I will try to
get my mail fowarded and get the tapes out to you ASAP. If you set up a
trade with me I promise that I will get your tapes out to you as soon as
I can. Sorry about all of this, but things are out of my hands. So I
hope everyone enjoys their break and I will have those tapes out to you
as soon as I get my hands on them.

Peace & Out...

Japhy

Listen to Phish, walk around and sleep alot.
