Bad trader alert

dlc@well.sf.ca.us Mon Jan 9 22:15:29 1995

Didn't want to have to do this but hopefully it'll save someone else from
the same mistake.. DON'T TRADE WITH JCDAVIS@WAM.UMD.EDU
After he contacted me about a trade, I mailed out his tape within 24 hours
and he said he'd send mine right out. After several weeks and no tape, he
gave me a bizarre story and promised to send it right out. Several more
weeks, still no tape, another story, another promise to send it out. Several
more weeks, still no tape, another promise to send it out. Several more
weeks no tape and now no more replies which leads me to believe there was
never any intent to send it. So avoid getting ripped off, don't trade with

positivness in negativity

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Mon Jan 9 22:35:25 1995

if mailing to listproc is not working for you, then may i suggest that
you are doing it wrong. either that, or a lot of people have
been lying, because it seems to work for everyone else. and if
nothing else, who remembers the part of the intro letter that
list, but the owner...or try being creative...unsub minarets
or some variation...surely you are not so one dimensional that
you tried the same thing over and over, and then posted to the
list. be creative, friend....or give me your site and password, and
ill unsubscribe you myself....guaranteed (or you get 5 free 3 cent stamps)

On Mon, 9 Jan 1995 19:26:37 -0500 THOMAS (POSTER NUTBAG) SLY
man, your post was cool, but i must argue the validity of one statement...
it is obviously another one
of those BORED people who _LOVE_ pissing other people off!
seriously believes everything he said...

among the negativity and bitching in the last couple days,
there is one really cool thing going on....

i realise it is a stretch to be an eternal optimist, but
it always works out in the end.. :) :)

it primarily because i am on other mailing lists, and i see the
difference...

not too many people are too terribly defencive, here....when i recieve
something that simply says 'you posts are idiotic' i just reply with
one of those 'who the fuck are you to tell me that' kind of posts, and
i have recieved a good answer EACH time.....
that is increadibly cool, because, on the phishnet, if you say that,
'Ill tell you who the fuck i am...i am someone who has known phish for
eighty million years, and that makes me better than you, and you are an ass'

am i over-generalising? well, of course, but here i almost always
get.."yeah, im sorry --i thought this" or "that was how i took it"

much better.....and i gave given several apologies myself...
because, no a keyboard doesnt give me anymore power than anyone else.
somewhat.....and yes, i know you said SOME people get the sense of
power....i highly doubt you could tell me who those people are, though....
some people just have a different rhetoric style...it's like the thing
about having fun at shows......all different kinds of people, of all different
ages, have fun at shows....and i hate the way some of them do it...
but that doesnt make them wrong, it just makes me less like them.
some people like to pretend they know everything....fine...just let them
know they are wrong, in your opinion.

im not ragging on the phish net, or else id unsubscribe, but there,
a thread will go on for 3 weeks, about something retarded, and everyone's
hateful responses to that, and everyone's defencive responses to that, and
on and on and on and on.....

but, some people take it a little far, and i want to defend one of them

(melessia)? agar...@knox.something.....you know who im talking about....
right? well, she apologised for helping start the age thread, and i
just stared at my screen, and then went to sleep...but i had a dream that
everyone here jsut started apoligising for everything....
....blah blah blah blah"
.."oh yea? Fuck You!!!"
...."oops, sorry, i meant blah the other way"
.."oh, sorry. if you didnt mean it like that, sorry i said fuckyou"
...."its ok, im sorry i messed up in the first place"
.."well, then im sorry i wrote you and wasted bw"
...."oh...im sorry you had to write in the 1st place due to my error"
.."im sorry i made you realise you made an error"

i promise that would not work.....it is in the fourth line, where
people abandon that, and begin talking about something meaningful...to them

the point? oh yeah....kudos to mellissa (or whatever her name is) agar
for helping start that thread.....it wasn't a terribly bad one to check
out from time to time...and it generated an interesting poll....as long
as it doesn't get perpetuated for 9 years, but rather just come up now
and again.....

and i looked through messages on a friend's account this morning, since he
hadnt checked them from break, yet....and the first time it had been mentioned
in a while (unless i missed something) was on my setlist post for either the
birmingham show, or the atlanta show.....but since this is a talking net...
then starting threads is good....

toole...go hug mel agar....

and no i dont know about the harmonica peter's playing
sorry..... :)

well, this has turned out much longer than i expected.....but i still
think we should be happy that this net is generally the way it is...

because it could be like phish.net, and be angst center....or it could be
like root-tribe, where 75% of the posts are...."Hi my name is Keith, and
i am from Albuquerque, NM....but I am in Medical school in Tuscaloosa, AL
now.....i have seen dave live 31 times.....and i love proquepines"....or it
could be like widespread panic's where there are about two messages a day...
or it could be like the MTWA.net where i have yet to not be confused by what
they were talking about...or it could be like really deep thoughts, where
talk of illegal boots and scalping seems welcomed, or it could be like
horde net, where i seem to be getting both the digests AND each individual
post, and i can't change it....or it could be like lorenna mckinnik's list,
which i get delayed 3 days, or it could be like the punk net where the prime
topic of conversation is 902105930091 and you get flamed for talking about
punk........

but it's not...

it's like minarets, where people who are more friends than enimies, more
passive than mailbox flood happy, more positive than outwardly and
unjustifiably negative, more caring than defencive, and more happy than
angst ridden, can get together, and discuss......discuss whatever

and even cooler.....the enemies, mailbox flood happy, outwardly and
unjustifiably negative, and defencive people are respected here, too.
everyone is free to speek their minds...and that is accepted.....until
someone says to stop bitching, at which point, people usually stop.
They stop partially because (in mho) they also respect us in return....

if one of those other nets sounds more appealing, then chances are you
will be welcomed there with open arms. Just dont tell US to change,
unless you have a justifiable reason you think we are missing......and
there are certianly times when this is appropriate....i have a 2000 line-long
list of different bands addresses (no, tanen, havnt done anything with it yet)
and i will be happy to supply anyone with any directions i have, if they
think they will be happier elsewhere, or if they just want to peruse another
list(s).

is this a touch hypocritical? Yes.....but to the left.
there is a fine line between freedom of speech......and the phish.net

but im not ragging on the phish net....it's just not for me as much as
as this.....and i met a guy at the birmingham show, who said everything we
talked about was trivial, and he didnt read it too much....wonderful
how could i possibly not want him to be happy? i didnt say piss off....
minarets is killer, becaus he obviously didnt agree.....

that's just one of the ways i differed from him.....

now, if you will excuse me, i have to go make sure a girl who absolutely
adores satellites got my instructions on how to get on.....even though we
differ in that satellites is my next to least favourite song, while i love
halloween.....

and i have to write clare (i think----did you say i owed you mail, or
you owed me mail?)
hehehe----NOW you owe me mail
miss clareemily.....
which, ive been meaning to ask you.....
do you (or anyone else for that matter) know of
anywhere that sells pumpkin pj's?

and then, i have to go help a guy, who two days ago called me
a pointless idiot (or something like that), get the faq and
lyrics file, because i told him that was part of his problem
and he was very responsive, and willing to see my side....

and on the off chance that any 3 newbies, with less than 5 hours
got this far, OR *anyone* with a high high quality bela fleck
tape got this far, email me, if you would....just gimme the
subject as newbie offer, and i will respond if you make the cut...
ill give you a choice of three shows......but i dont know what yet

ps---so ben.....did YOU read the whoole thing?

Location of the vidio taping

USXE28B@prodigy.com Tue Jan 10 01:10:02 1995

It was filmed inboulder. I have the bootleg where dave
says,"you all are so friendly we thought this would be the
perfect place to film a vidio, sorry about the kitchen like
atmosphere" the boot I have doesn't have wwys on it though.
kitchen like atmosphere refers to the light. Hopefully I
can get the other set. Just trying to be of some assistance

Video...

lund4649@blue.UnivNorthCo.EDU Tue Jan 10 02:37:19 1995

and after the show he invited
everyone back for a show around 4 the next day....they played with the
Around, WWYS, Satellite, Rhyme & Reason, The Song That JAne Likes, Jimi
Thing, and then WWYS once again for the video shoot....then later on,
they turned the lights out and kicked some ass...i believe they took some
footage from that night's show as well...but, what sucked about that
nights show was that someone lunged a beer bottle at Dave right after
playing Warehouse and before Say Goodbye...he was really sketched out
about the whole incident. Who's the bastard that threw the bottle?
Anyway, that is the story behind the video. My friend is in it! At that
night's show he let's the audience sing "People in every direction, no
words exchanged, no time to exchange" then he comes in to continue the
song...pretty cool! So, just wondering, anyone know the Samples net
address and how to join? Later.

i'll lay my head in your lap, just twirl my hair in your fingers

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Tue Jan 10 03:44:09 1995

such an interesting day.
really.

i'll begin by saying, that i woke up early early early
in much pain.
so sleepily i stumbled into the bathroom
and roooted around in teh cabinets for
drugs.
(legal drugs. only legal drugs)
and i found one type of (legal) drug
that met my likings
although the directions said, 'take one every six to eight hours'
i was in a lot of pain.
i took two right there.
needless to say, i then woke up at 4pm.
my day was gone.
anyway.. when i woke up i had had a trippy dream
and i was singing exodus.
weird, huh?
then i read my inbox and there was mucho hate mail.
it was not happy for me. it was not a happy way to start my day.
(on top of the drugs).
so.
i went about my way.
then.. i checked my mail again.. few minutes ago.
and i'm so happy.
i really am.
wonderful mail from so many wonderful people on this net.
yes.
this net.
MINARETS.NET
i love you all.
dave toole wants to offer a hug to you all.
and so do i.
there were so many nice things said to, and about the members of this
net, and there was a lot of love and comfort.
good energy, good karma, and high levels of consciousness.
it made my heart purrrrrr.

so. then i had lovely drunk mail from nebuious. and it made me wonder why
buford doesn't send drunk mail anymore.. hm... but i'll see ya tomorrow
silly boopster and i'll scold ya then.

so. also.
about bad traders.
i had a nasty flinch when i read that letter.
whoa-boy.
i must confess.
i am guilty.
i still have tapes of ever-so-patiend
cliff's
to send
and i am a bad trader.
i have had them a long time. but i do vouch my firstborn (or jason
thompson's... who's ever comes first) that you will get yoru tapes.
life has had me on a see-saw lately.
(how much time does lately encompass?
i mean.. can lately include the last few days?
weeks?
months? how lately is lately, exactly?)
lately (few months.. builtup to the last month)
i've been busy
giving myself all the love i deserve
and many other things in my life have
happened to take a backseat to my own
self-preservation and nourishment...
SO
since i
feel like i'm back to the person
i remember, and the person i vow never to
loose again..
i will begin to slowly take on the responsibilites
i owe others.
but still not let myself get lost in the duration of the travels.
cliff, like i said.. you get jason's firstborn. [wink] AND the tapes!

well then i'm off,
cause i've got a date at 4am. (aren't i a kook?) hee hee

here's the long love-extended version of my sig...
enjoy...

spoons and love
and my color green (not your green, my green)

Re: dave on vh1

mwebber Tue Jan 10 03:52:32 1995

It (the video) was on at 3:25 EST on VH1 on a segment called Darcy's
Music hosted by Moon Zappa. No walk on. She just said that Dave has been
compared to Sting and that the album is 'extraordinary'...nothing special.

Dave

to all that may be interested in seeing dave on tv, he is supposed to be
doing a walk on on vh1 (darcy's music, or something)

the walk on was supposed to be today so i would suspect it would be aired
 tonight.

all the little buggers are marching...

72672.1776@compuserve.com Tue Jan 10 04:14:49 1995

hey y'all late nighters, i'd like to tell a little story about my tiny little

i like Sprite. alot. i drink alot of it. when i visit home, my parents
just unload a case or two into my room, and i pop one open every ten mintutes
or so. Sprite, essentially, is carbonated sugar water, but that doesn't
bother me, as long as it doesn't go flat, it's still good.

well, sometimes, as i type away on the little SE/30 here, i lose track of
which cans have gone flat out of neglect, and, well, the ants that live
outside my window didn't.

it's common knowledge that ants don't like carbonation, by the way. they
WAIT (patient little guys) until it goes flat.

so, returning to my room after a short hiatus from Minarets, i find that ALL
THE LITTLE ANTS ARE MARCHING RIGHT TO THE SPRITE CAN NEXT TO THE WINDOW.
normally, i would freak out (i HATE insects)-- but, suddenly, Dave started
singing in my head, and i didn't mind cleaning up the mess. they were
rather cute, really.

they were all doing it the same way, in this little line to and fro the can.

now, my room smells like Raid, but at least i'm alone... i think. no, i'm
not a slob. i just like Sprite. and so do my little friends.

so, next time you skip track 7 on UTTAD, or lean on the fast forward button
while listening to R2T, think about the modern wonder of carbonation and thank
Dave for his Ants.

goodnight, and beware the Allman Brothers on David Letterman! (i liked the
trio from Hastings, though...) ;)

so does anyone have it? My roomate wants to do some trading and
figures that the net would be the easiest way. By the way, since
some of you seem to know more about what DMB is doing than the band
itself, when are they coming back down to Athens? Also
does anybody (I'm sure some do) have the bootlegs of DMB and Tim
Reynolds from like 12-3-93, innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnncredible! When you
get bored with new shit, put that baby in, probably the best
Say Goodbye and Minarets around. Anyways I'd appreciate it if
someone could send me the Panic net address.

Re: New DMB fans

matt@arbutus.Stanford.EDU Tue Jan 10 12:22:46 1995

Now, To the old DMB fans...
I can't decide how I feel about the radio play. The video on MTV is pushing
it way far and I don't know how much more I can handle. My problem is that I
know this is way selfish because the band has a right to be successful, but
when people go around bad-mouthing the first two albums and saying that the
live version of Ants Marching is not as good as the one on UTTAD I get very
 upset. What do ya think?
 Have a nice day!
 ROn

My question is, why does it *really* matter if it is or isn't?
We all pay Dave respect by listening to his music, and I guess
someone might owe us something, somehow, but *they're* the
musicians, not us. They can do and write anything they want, which
means that we don't own them. Sure we can stop paying them any
attention if we don't like what they're doing, but they're the
ones creating, not us.

So I guess it kind of bothers me when people say they like the older
version of Ants better just as it bothers me when people say they
like the newer version better. We don't create, so who are we to
judge? And what if the band really hates the dueling banjos part of Ants
and they never want to do it again? What do we do then? Do we tell
them to stop changing and evolving however they see fit? Maybe the
reason a lot of newbies like the new version of Ants better is
because it *is* better, and vets like the old version better 'cause
they're used to it. Hmm... Interesting way to think about it.

In any case, I say, let them do what they think is right and leave
people who like the new version of Ants alone.

Bye for now,
Matt

BAD TRADER

HvyHead@aol.com Tue Jan 10 12:52:26 1995

I just read a post and would like to further warn people not to trade with
jcdavis@wam.umd.edu. I have been waiting for my tapes for a month now, and
still haven't even gotten a response from him yet, except a few excuses. I
have done many trades, and have never had a problem like this before. I think
people like this give a bad name to the net and the whole purpose of having
one. If you can't trust people, what is the point of being part of it. I
don't want to start another war here, because I know that most people are
honest here on this net, but what can you do about those who aren't? Isn't
there something that can be done? Like I said, I have never had this problem
before, so nobody take this personally. And not for a moment am I saying that
this problem represents the net as a whole, cause it doesn't. At the risk
that he may still have all intentions of sending them out, I heavily
apologize to him and all, but when a trade is being made, it is kind of nice
to update the person who is expecting your tapes, if you know what I mean. A
little common courtesy goes a long way. Sorry for wasting anybody's time, but
I felt it necessary to vent some frustration and make it available for all to
hear, after all, I listen to everybody elses. Well until the world becomes a

a quick learner) I would be most Grateful!

Re: minarets size

BHAGGER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Tue Jan 10 16:11:40 1995

how many people are subscribers to this list?
do we know? can we find out?
how many people receive all the random babble i post?
this age survey stuff got me curious...
catherine

I was curious too but for a different reason. I'm sure Keith has told you all
about our inability to find anyone at the Atlanta show. Well that got my brain
working. I plan to find out how much it would cost to make buttons (pins) for
the people on the minarets as sort of an insignia and symbol to others at
concerts. I heard from Keith that someone was going to try to make t-shirts--
this is not meant to upstage that effort. Buttons seem the most logical since
they should be cheap to make, easy to mail and you can wear them with anything
night after night (we went to B'ham the next night). I was upset that I has no
way to distinguish those on the minarets and those who are not, I was actually
ready to yell aloud in the lobby for minarets to step forward and make
themselves known. Anyway I'll post more about this when I find out the cost an
d when everyone has returned from the holidays.

with Daves unique styleI got as many tapes as I could until I saw that the
same songs appeared very often. well, I haven't lost interest. Reading a
couple set lists, it appears as though Dave has a couple new songs. I guess I
am a little out of touch seeing that most of my DMB tapes are 93's. I would
love to get some new tunes, or any crisp '94 sbds. I have some good Phish
tapes and a couple great DMB. thanks ZAC

I'm sitting in a...well nevermind

gt0407c@prism.gatech.edu Tue Jan 10 16:57:06 1995

I had some time to blow and my options included programming, programming,
and smoking...so, i'll smoke (and eat jelly beans, gourmet, of course) and
type till I've had, at least, one of each of the flavors of my jelly beans.
But, you know, I may as well have two of each flavor, just so the other isn't
alone in the deep recesses of my stomach.

I have this friend, I guess you'd call him a friend (of course you would,
I'd hate to think that I have any REAL NME's) who is kinda new to the whole
dave matthews scene. You know what's funny
about my friend...of course you don't...why'd I ask...to answer it myself, of
course.

What's funny about him is that he's a huge trend expert. I've never seen a
trendier dude in all my life. All of a sudden he thrust himself into the
whole DAMABA area and went at it full force. But, you know what, he started
out as just another groupie-type, a grown-up version of the little ones that
everyone was complaining about earlier...but now, he actually stepped out of
the whole fad thing and into a whole new level of fandome...I'm really
impressed when someone like him develops a new attitude toward bands like
dave...taking it from the level of 'what does everyone around me like' to
the level of 'what do I want to like' then to 'how can I appreciate this more'

I just thought this was cool, and I figgered (I know how to spell it) I'd
share it with everyone. I need more jelly beans, please, send me some, they
don't even have to be gourmet...but it'd be nice, and I'd probably return the
favor with big smiles, and maybe a hug for whoever needs one.

Always chew your jelly beans before you swallow them,

Shug

sorry kevin, but seeing as how i am a virgin user of this fucking machine i
have deleted your address, your identity, sorry but i will still
respond--the boulder shows sound great, richmond too, and i do have boots
of dmb--i could just send you best one if you like- cause dates escape my
mind right now--but maybe you could pass on vital info like address--or
maybe this info is availible to me but i am blind to it...hmmm so yeah and
by the way-halloween is an esoteric song, fantastic, beautiful rare/raging
all these things-but not all possess the flamethrower spirit, passion,
bitter bile, and temperment to understand the rabid wanderings, mutterings,
and throaty growls from d so just practice understanding...the music wells
up inside few of us, pools at unique levels, overflows and cascades...so if
people don't like certain holidays, sobeit...i know some are turned off by
almost, keyword, almost indecipherable lyrics but hey that just makes
listening all the more interesting....so kev, talk to me again--i am a true
newbie, fuckup...and to the rest of the scribers, hey from the vapid
wasteland of rochester...someone should tell dave to visit here and convert
restless souls....hmmm ok later...eric

i don't know. i just don't know.

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Jan 10 17:04:05 1995

you know what's missing from the net? music. we're all sitting around
here (openly) discussing a band, but for the lucky number of us who
have no computers of our own, we have to sit in a computer lab at our
respective universities, colleges, and places of employment and listen
to the clicking of our and others keyboards.

just a minor gripe.

happy new year everyone. hope at the end of it we can all say happy
old year. 355 days to go until next time. i didn't make it to any
dave shows over break, but it's probably just as well. i tend to hurt
muchly these days. but i thought i'd share a short summary of what i
did do. not that it matters. just a peaceful sojourn from the icky
poopy moods that have been pervading our lives lately.

anyway, i had mentioned before that there was the possibility that
shannon worrell was going to play in c-ville on nye. as many of you
know by now, she was at dave on nye, so the possibility was nothing
more than a wasted dream.

BUT, that's not to say that i didn't have a killer nye. (how do you
pronounce "nye"?) well, as i mentioned before, i had my sinuses worked
on by the skilled hands of the uva ent department, so they were kind
enough to place in my hands a phat perskiption of percocet, which in

well, i saved my last two for nye, which i spent with jeff peters of
this here net, and a common freind of ours, and just as i walked into
this quaint little bookstore they kicked in. let me just say it was the
coolest bookstore experience of my life. just ask jeff. i wondered around
for an hour staring into the blue sky (we won't worry about the fact that i
was inside, as well as it being night) and making random sound effects
and picking up and perusing books that have no interest of me (iglek zormi's
"how to make your own panflute) and more or less (or more, or more and more)
really enjoying myself.

then (and this is the part that may interest the people around here who
don't know me), we sat down, in of all places, the c-ville courthouse
and saw terri allard. she's good. she's really good. i don't know much
about her, just that she's a solid member of the c-ville underground, and
that she has a beautiful voice (even more beautiful in the surrounding
psychedelic world of percocet), and that she has alot to say. she was
also joined by a c-ville fiddler, and the two of them together sounded
incredible. anyone else down there at uva who knows about her and can
clue us all into more, i'd be much obliged.

after that, i showed my steel plates to jeff, and then we stood on a bench,
watched fireworks, and while i was stoned out of my mind, jeff and our
freind acted stoned out of their minds, and overall, it was just a really
hepcat kindof experience.

our grand finale was chicken and pancakes with iced tea at the italian
villa.

tomorrow i'll share with you jeff's first experience with waffleing around
at a waffle house.

like i said, though, not that any of this matters. see ya'll in february...

Re: New DMB fans

BHAGGER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Tue Jan 10 18:28:46 1995

So who are we to judge??? My friend we are the people who allow the band to
do what they love for a living-- as a sole means of income. We are the
audience that allows their performances to be more than a mere rehearsal.
Even Carter realizes the impact the fans have and is very courteous and humble
when he thanks them. Respect is a two way street my friend. Please allow me to
elaboraate for a moment -- Though i have never been a particular fan of U2
There was one interview with Bono regarding Zoo TV in which he said something
to the effect of -- well if the fans don't like it screw them. I was mordified
that anyone would bite the hand that feeds them in such a rude and tactless
manner. It was at that point that any respect I may have ever developed for
that band or its music flew out the window. It went beyond the point of
judging the music at all-- that would be a sad state for DMB.

and they never want to do it again? What do we do then? Do we tell
them to stop changing and evolving however they see fit? Maybe the
reason a lot of newbies like the new version of Ants better is
because it *is* better, and vets like the old version better 'cause
they're used to it. Hmm... Interesting way to think about it.

have no intention of taking that away from them for I myself can be considered
a newbie who has been through an accelerated program since I live with Keith.
Now for my point -- I. in my newbie state, heard the UTTAD version first and
love to sing along and beebop to it. Then when the whole which is better thread
was going on Keith had me sit and listen to the earlier version. Carter hit the
drum about 17 million times and thruogh the first half or so of the song I felt
like screaming -- Get on with it -- it was then that I actually listened, not
just heard the words. My point, which I promised so long ago, is that veterans
to DMB have listened and it is obvious to them that the newbies have not. It is
important to them. It is almost as if someone who dogs the earlier version with
little thought to their words is being blasphemous, and that can be hurtful.

In any case, I say, let them do what they think is right and leave
people who like the new version of Ants alone.

Bye for now,
Matt

Sorry about the length but i refuse to be accused of taking anything out
context.

I guess we can judge all we want, but the creative act exists without our
money. Maybe *they* don't exist without our money, but the creative act
stands alone. I guess what we all seem to forget is that a band that *we like*
made a new version of Ants Marching that a lot of newbies like. And if they
want to say that they like the new version better than the live version, isn't
that a credit to DMB for producing a variation that reaches other people?
Conversely, if we put down a group of people who like something we don't like
(i.e. newbies who like Ants on UTTAD), shouldn't we also put down the band that
produced it. It's only fair. I'm just saying that we can't do one without the
other. But I don't think any of us are planning on putting down DMB's efforts
quite yet.

One last point newbies do have the right to enjoy what ever they want and I

I'm sure "veterans" know a lot more about the music than newbies, but that
doesn't mean that they own the music. And shouldn't our response to a rash
newbie who acts like s(he) knows it all be "well, have you heard any of the
old stuff; it's pretty good, too". We should try to bring them into the fold,
so to speak, and if the don't want to come in, let 'em go, and don't get so

hello, i guess you could categorize me as a newbie although personally that term
has been flung about this small room in a derogatory manner, sweatyshirtesque so
whatever, i think most versions of most dmb songs kick so who cares? into the

who likes the new susan powter better than the old one?

?

you know, i'm just as eager as the next guy, girl, dog, hippopatumaus,
hippie, yuppie, guppie, groupie to be rich and famous one day. but i
have to wonder, is it worth it? along come the people who suddenly
know your name and then they sit around and ponder your name, and start
talking about what makes your name so much cooler than the rest of
the names in the world (even if they happen to be the same name). then
come along the people who know you to the most intimate detail, and you
start dealing with things like people sitting around complaining about
what your doing. accusing you of letting them down. accusing their
freinds of fostering this supreme let down. i would think that you
would just get this screw it mentality at this point and say things like
"if the fans don't like it, screw 'em." then if your lucky, you either
get shot, or you kill yourself, or both.

fame and fortune. there's a catch 22. catches you. then kills you.

stop griping!!!!!!! for chris's sake. i HATE the uttad ants. i HATE
the r2t satellite. i also HATE true reflections and granny. i also
think boyd's grin is cheezy. but that's ME. that's not YOU. and
if it's such a pressing matter in your life that you need to take offense
at my opinions, or anyone's opinions, i suggest you take a chill pill.

anyone who bases their deepest mores and convictions on a music group
is a dolt. yes, that is a flame, yes you may flame me back for it.
if you feel the need to publicly flame me on the net, make sure you do
a good job of making an ass of me, because we all hate frivolous flames.
you can find some inspiration (as i said, i song i hate) in whatever
corner of dave's (or boyd's(or carter's, or leroi's, or stefan's) mind
you see fit. that's the beauty in it all. it's your interpretations
that all matter, and in all honesty, it's your interpretations that
humble dave the most. trust me, when you say negative things about
dave, he takes it to heart. but i'm sure that if you start arguing
about what's good and what's not, and when you start telling people
that they suck for it, he's going to laugh at you. as are alot of
other people. this is a behavior known in the world of common sense

Re: stop the insanity!!!!!!!!

who likes the new susan powter better than the old one?

?

you know, i'm just as eager as the next guy, girl, dog, hippopatumaus,
hippie, yuppie, guppie, groupie to be rich and famous one day. but i
have to wonder, is it worth it? along come the people who suddenly
know your name and then they sit around and ponder your name, and start
talking about what makes your name so much cooler than the rest of
the names in the world (even if they happen to be the same name). then
come along the people who know you to the most intimate detail, and you
start dealing with things like people sitting around complaining about
what your doing. accusing you of letting them down. accusing their
freinds of fostering this supreme let down. i would think that you
would just get this screw it mentality at this point and say things like
"if the fans don't like it, screw 'em." then if your lucky, you either
get shot, or you kill yourself, or both.

fame and fortune. there's a catch 22. catches you. then kills you.

stop griping!!!!!!! for chris's sake. i HATE the uttad ants. i HATE
the r2t satellite. i also HATE true reflections and granny. i also
think boyd's grin is cheezy. but that's ME. that's not YOU. and
if it's such a pressing matter in your life that you need to take offense
at my opinions, or anyone's opinions, i suggest you take a chill pill.

anyone who bases their deepest mores and convictions on a music group
is a dolt. yes, that is a flame, yes you may flame me back for it.
if you feel the need to publicly flame me on the net, make sure you do
a good job of making an ass of me, because we all hate frivolous flames.
you can find some inspiration (as i said, i song i hate) in whatever
corner of dave's (or boyd's(or carter's, or leroi's, or stefan's) mind
you see fit. that's the beauty in it all. it's your interpretations
that all matter, and in all honesty, it's your interpretations that
humble dave the most. trust me, when you say negative things about
dave, he takes it to heart. but i'm sure that if you start arguing
about what's good and what's not, and when you start telling people
that they suck for it, he's going to laugh at you. as are alot of
other people. this is a behavior known in the world of common sense
as NARROW-MINDEDNESS. not that i've never fell victim to such a dreaded
acute (sometimes chronic) affliction, mind you. but let's see the

Re: video camera setup @ NYE

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Tue Jan 10 23:47:54 1995

They did not shoot a videoat the NYE show. The camera was there
for a simulcast. The dave show was being shown downstairs (where
the opening band played) as it was going on upstairs. They WERE
and I mean WERE going to record it, but some dickhead stole the
VCR before the show. As one who set up the show on NYE, and who
did security for Jeff at the soundboard I know these things.
Believe me. There was and is no video from NYE.

confusion about tix

marianne@mail.ilt.columbia.edu Wed Jan 11 15:05:54 1995

Marianne is not happy. No...very, very sad...

Philadelphia is sold out. Ticketbastard was useless, couldn't tell me how
big the venue is, or when they sold out...

And interestingly enough, they have no listing for the Connecticut shows or
the University Park shows whose tickets I was ready to gobble with
demon-like voracity. I would appreciate any information about getting
tickets to any of these locations. Perhaps college venues don't sell
through ticketmaster? I could use Numbers to call etc.

No limit on # of Tix.

sold at Roseland or Irving Plaza. Irving says they have no information til
next week, but they are 99% sure that they will be selling (thereby
avoiding unnecesary surcharges.) I'll keep ya posted...

-Steve(not feeling creative at the moment)

also, during the fall i received about 10 requests for the lyrics and

this isn't a true indication of how fast the net is growing, because
people tend to lose these files all the time and ask for them again,
but i'd say about 80% of 'em are new netters.

also, i finally remembered to bring a copy of r2t with me to the lab,
so the lyrics file will reflect that jane is indeed on that cd (something

the song that jane likes

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Jan 11 15:43:24 1995

you know, it took over a year for someone to bring to my attention that
i forgot to put the song that jane likes in the lyrics file. why didn't
anyone tell me sooner???????

anyway, i just typed it in, and i thought i'd send it to the net for
those of you that want to keep all of dave's lyrics in cyberspace, and
those of you who don't have r2t.

also, i have started an alternative versions lyrics file, including
halloween. halloween has been posted before, so i'll hold out on reposting
it and the file until it's more of a file. if you want to help, feel
free to transcribe any versions of any songs that you feel is so substantially
different than it is now that it deserves note. i'm trying to limit myself
on say goodbyes and drive in, drive outs, but feel free to do whatever you
want for halloween. i may devote a whole file to the song if we get enough
substantially different versions.

The Song That Jane Likes

and in plays to write the wire in
i'll come back again
taorching time talking rhymes in
i'll come back again

would you like to play
with the thought of a friend
in a distant passing stage
while you lie around
with hands up and down
so resigned you will fall down

while you around here play
wild on the warm and far away
while you around here play
the days keep scrbbling themselves
in tidy lines

would like to play
with a fool holding hands
with a one-eyed jack of spades
while on the deck they sing
all of the captain's cards are kings
still he and the queen are lost at sea
i hope it isn't you and me

and i'll be back 'round again
yes i'll walk in time with you old freind
and we'll find that place
that we had danced so long ago

and in plays to write the wire in
i'll come back again
torching time talking rhymes in
i'll come back again
with this resigned
the letter i sign

tim and dave, trades, and cupid

acox@s850.mwc.edu Wed Jan 11 16:52:03 1995

I've got several questions about past show dates...

First, I've got a Dave and Tim Reynolds show dated 4/22/93, but I don't
think that's the correct date - I have never seen it mentioned, and this
copy isn't labelled too well. It has no location given and no setlist.
I believe that the first song is Satellite, after which I think Dave says
that it is the second time the two have played together...has an
INCREDIBLE Lie In Our Graves jam by Tim. Any help on the location, date
and setlist (the copy itself is broken in several places, so I'm not sure
if it is in order) would be great.

Also, my 9/27/94 copy of the album release (UTTAD) is broken up in
several places, anyone with the correct setlist please mail me.

Still more, and probably most important to me...

Anyone with a copy of the last show Peter played with the band (Big
League Chew?) please mail me... I WILL MAKE YOUR TRADE WORTHWHILE.

Finally, Valentine's Day is approaching. 34 days, for those of you who
will not see the band until then. Listen to old shows (from the Greisar
Age), and just think how great some of these songs will sound backed by
an entire symphony. For a time I thought Halloween would be great, and it
may be, but Lover Lay Down...

We'll just have to patiently wait for all the songs...

Tapes and tix

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Wed Jan 11 18:58:12 1995

1. If I owe you a copy of 9-1-92, sorry. TJ- your tapes go out by the end
of the week. There's another pair of blanks that I have on top of my
stereo that will go out soon as well, but the name escapes me now. If
anyone has some soundboards from any of the NYE run shows and feels like
trading, let me know.

2. OK- I can't get in touch with Ben, who has the tix, and I don't know
if he wants to buy mine or sell all three, so this is a PRELIMINARY OFFER
ONLY.

If you want tix to see DMB with the Richmond symphony orchestra on
Valentine's day, let me know. I was planning on making the trip, but many
things have happened to convince me that it wouldn't be a great idea.
Problem- the tix are not together. However, it sounds as if some
minaretters will be getting together pre and post show for some fun and
frolic, so it would still be a lot of fun- maybe you can bring an
understanding date or something.
Price- $50.

Ha Ha. Don't flame.

Actual Price- face value ($29?) plus ticketmaster charges.

Again- the tix may or may not be for sale, but I don't know when I'll be
in touch with Ben, and I don't want to have to eat these- I'm a poor man.
I'm pretty sure at least one ticket will be for sale.

Ben T., if you're out there, get in touch. I may be up at your fine
institution tomorrow evening.

is yet another article that just cannot seem to define their music.....It
did, however, compare DMB's methods for gaining a devoted audience to those
of Springsteen, Metallica, and U2.......wierd..........Dave's quote-"What
creates our sound is five completley different personalities that for some
reason really enjoy playing together.........." Sounds about right, don't ya

DMB on Letterman

bullard@coral.bucknell.edu Wed Jan 11 21:58:45 1995

am also on the Allman Bros. net, and they appeared on Letterman Tuesday
night. Most of the talk on that net seems to center around how difficult
it is for the band to play a song in only about 3:30, when their normal
tendency is to jam around for a few minutes. Anyway, I think DMB could
fit more into this restricted mode of time, but it would definately
detract from their performance. It would limit what songs they could
play, and possibly not allow any of the members to show their incredible
musical talents due to the fact they had to hurry the song up. I think
having DMB on Letterman will be great for them, but it will be a shame if
what happened to the Allman Bros. happens to DMB. They looked very out
of context trying to cut about six minutes off of what they would
normaly play during Midnight Rider. Oh well, just my $.02 worth.

WWYS on radio

wandres@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu Thu Jan 12 00:32:44 1995

Just to let you all know, I heard What Would You Say tonight on the
"comercial alternative" station in New Orleans. The same station that
LOVES Mazzy Starr (yuck-who likes repetitive sad music, anywayz?)

My friend said he heard a Dave song in Taco Bell! Pray to god that Dave
wont be on Taco Bell's next "hip" CD.

In Tulsa, I heard Typical Situation on Digital Cable Radio. Very Cool. Later,
BT's Run Around was also aired...

But I do think the the video will become a buzz clip before too long, but I
think there is no chance of Dave attracting the fullout "pop" audiences and
following that Spin Doctors created... Dave's music is just too complex
for most people to understand and appreciate. But, I also
think that Feb. 17 will be the LAST TIME that I will get to see Dave in a

Stereogram on r2t

overlooking the obvious. My heartfelt apologies to all, dear readers.
However, in my effort to perfect my procrastination technique it occurs

cry freedom (film)

jgraves@world.std.com Thu Jan 12 12:09:05 1995

Hey there! I'm just following up on the comment about Cry Freedom the
movie. Having only recently heard the DMB song of the same name, I was
curious what the connection might be about between the song and movie.
I don;t know the lyrics, so I can't really compare. But the basic theme
of the movie is liberation and isolation... how one black man (Steve Biko)
argued and fought for the liberation of himself and his nation from an
oppressive system and how one white newspaper editor who befriended him
(Donald Woods) had to escape the one country he had ever called home just
to get the remarkable story of his friend out to the world...

Considering how many DMB songs deal with yearning for physical, emotional,
and/or spiritual freedom, I thought there might be some connection.

The movie is good. The soundtrack is excellent, and the final song (also
called Cry Freedom) is chilling and invigorating. Lots of African rythms
and such.

Thanks for letting me ramble.

Be Well!

That guy is flaming

Just a few things to say(after all, it is lunchtime).
About that guy who totally flamed the net...normally I wouldn't be
one to say anything, but you are a poopie head.
Also, thanks to Dusty for those superb tapes, especially the Lexington
show. Cry Freedom was amazing and I really liked the jam into
Halloween. Great filler too. Also, thanks to Katharine for my tape back.
And what's the deal with Dave on Letterman? I think I purged that
message by accident. And finally, does anyone know anything about
the Lucasfilm Tie Fighter simulation game. It turned my hard drive
into a major snail.

Bye,

i don't have time to be doing this, dammit...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Jan 12 12:38:06 1995

Finally, Valentine's Day is approaching. 34 days, for those of you who
will not see the band until then. Listen to old shows (from the Greisar
Age), and just think how great some of these songs will sound backed by
an entire symphony. For a time I thought Halloween would be great, and it
may be, but Lover Lay Down...

actually, i think some of the sound affects peter uses on songs like
true reflections (granted, a song i feel is intrinsically flawed) and
others sound pretty stupid. don't get me wrong, some of the things
he did are so missed by the band that they won't play certain songs
anymore (so much to say, people people) and rightfully so.

what i would suggest is zoning to under the table and dreaming and
some of the really ethereal mixes they put on boyd and you will get
just a dashing hint of what's to come. particularly, pay attention
to satellite (a song i have a feeling will make me cry that particular
night, honestly) and jimi thing. (hey boofy, think they'll have any
bagpipes?)

though i would have to agree that if the symphony can emulate what
peter did for lover, we're all going to mess our pants.

Dark clouds hanging

marianne@mail.ilt.columbia.edu Thu Jan 12 12:52:01 1995

First there was a feeling of exhilaration. "Yippy Yeah my tapes arrived!!"
Three new tapes billed as second and third gen sound board dat. o.k. cool.

Then there was the guilt..."oops uh I didn't send my tapes out yet. Still
have 2 to tape." Since all this occurred after some carousing around town,
I stayed up relatively late fulfilling my obligations.

So this morning on my rushed way to work (guess I stayed up a little too
late, cause I overslept), I decided to pop in my newly acquired
treasure...but something's not right, folks...dave is hidden behind the
diabolic chimera of hissy static...gotta turn the volume up to like three
to hear properly...NR on, treble down, bass up then down, it just ain't
workin'...

And now I'm stewin' and brewin' a bit. Trying to rationalize doin' the
right thing, but having a rough time escaping this feeling of being
tricked. I don't want to send my tapes out now. I want to send those
tapes back. Dave through a tin can is never good...

I know, I know. I especially should send out my rarest and neatest dave
(Special thanks to Adam V whom I will never stop thanking--and a little
got me into this trouble) This poor guy is forced appearantly to always
listen to dave in a can. Spread the goodness, love and pure joy that is
DMB. Still, I can't help feeling cheated. These goods were not delivered
as billed. I am angry, disappointed, increasingly cynical...

I guess the only constructive thing I can add is a little reminder to those
newbie grovel in a real sweet way then be tricked into trading for
something that ain't so hot.

Anyone wishing to spoon or hug this dark cloud from the core of my soul, is
certainly encouraged to do so...Advice and nebulous sympathy would also be
appreciated. How would you handle it?

Re: Dark clouds hanging

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Thu Jan 12 13:31:35 1995

After reading your comments on hearing Dave through a tin can, I

I think everyone on this net has gotten spoiled (myself included)
with hearing excellent quality 1st and 2nd generation dave tapes.
I remember when I got my first dave tape a few years ago,
(election night 92), it was so fuzzy and horrible that the
Halloween song was barely distinguishable. I, instead of
bitching, was overjoyed to have a recording of such a great band
in my hands, since they had no cd's, and had no plans of changing
that fact. This was also when there were only 2, *maybe* 3
people taping shows (on good nights), so ALL the tapes came from
one of very few places. These days there are shitloads of people
taping (I counted 13 analog and about 7 or 8 DATs at the NYE
show), so we EXPECT great sounding dave. My point is--just be
glad you've got a tape of this band that you would not otherwise
have if you hadnt known anyone on this net, or that someone hadnt
kindly volunteered to tree for you. Be grateful. Kiss the
ground that they walk upon. But dont bitch.

On a closing note--Even though Ive recently obtained a 1st gen
copy of Election night, nothing beats the old fuzzy copies of
11-2-92 or 11-17-92 that you can barely hear peter in. They are
great, and I'll listen to either of those before some of the SHIT
that DMB is playing now.

Just venting a little,

Wade

PS-Can I have one of your fish postcards?

Dave and the band hanging out in the Sprite can....

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Thu Jan 12 13:33:50 1995

hmmmm....sometimes the tin can effect makes me happy...

yunno...the old days where the only tapes you could find were a friends
frineds friends copy....from who knows when a Trax...
before the soundboard was the best....
To hear it in your car, you had to turn it all the way up or have a big
amplifier...
Listnen to Bagby adjusting mixes during songs...peters keyboard being
quite load, then disappearing....

Most of my musically performancewise best tapes are my worst quality...
my best version of Drive In Drive Out full band has hiss....i jsut get
used to it...kinda puts a date/age on tapes....like good wine...

Not that im not happy with the stellar patches we get now....
just everything cant sound perfect....
and ill take anything thats a good performance, whether its clear or not...

somehting i taped two nites ago is primary vocals due to the nature of
the venue, but I just nix the midramge to bring em down, and still listen
to it, guitar, drums are hard to hear, bass is almost nonexistent...
still a gREAT performance (clare and emily, Q&M) yunno what im tlking about)

when i see someone day "lookin for high quality tapes" or "1 or 2nd gen
soundboard only" i think you are limiting yourself a nd missin alot of
good shows.....

and on Mariannes post....i dont htink anyone was tryin to trick you...
dpending on someones collection, their opinion of quality varies....I
though i had a great sndbrd of dave when i started getting into him. Then
i did my first tape myself back in 93 and it amazed me....
sometimes poeple have different perspectives on what is good qualtiy

this isnt directed at anyone or anything....jsut ramblin off toop of my
head....

Yes, in some ways I know you are right. Just by being on the net we have
access to great stuff that many others don't have. But there is mucho
great quality stuff in existence, and I want it even if every dave fan
can't have it. I am grateful. I am thankful. That don't mean that I
don't want more. There is the sensitive soul within me. But surely you
can understand the inevitable frustration...

Look, my collection is new and growing, I have spent lots of time hooking
up MANY friends not on the net with my tapes, they who have none. So I am
always eager to find friends that _do_ have tapes, ala swappola everybody
happy.

My point was less bitching about poor quality (admittantly a component, not
central feature) but more the problems of communicating about what is good
and what is not good. I hear 2nd gen and am told HQ, i think "good" I
want that. Trade. Maybe not everyone understands that with each copy the
gen gets bigger? If someone had said, I have some, not so good, I would
very likely say, nah don't want, but why don't you send me some tapes and
you can have whalla this. See the diff?

Still no takers on skinny dipping...
M

Oh BTW, I do not agree that Dave is playing SHIT nowadays, nope not a very
accurate adjective at all, but If you wanna try and convince me by sending
some of your great quality old stuff I'd be glad to send you the new tapes
I got last night ;-).

Shug, while I totally admire your motivation, I don't apologize for sucking.
We don't. I'm all for constructive criticism, tho. Maybe there are people
on the planet who like DinoJr and that other band. One thing that
distinguishes people on Minarets is open-mindedness and lack of superiority
complexes. This dartmouth guy wouldn't belong even if he did like DMB.
There's something redeeming in just about every kind of music, and even in
every person, no matter how hidden it must be in dartmouth-boy's
personality. Seems like most people on this net see that. If d-boy doesn't
he should be quiet and go away.

I cannot come to terms with the fact that although I am a mere 2 hours away
from Philly, I will not be seeing the show.

First, I have created some really neat tape covers (Ben T. gets full
photo credit on each one) and although I have not resolved a few technical
issues of getting them from the computer, these are only temporary. You
tell me who or what you like best, I could provide some neat covers.
(Anyone who trades with me also gets these, compliments of the
trade...maybe incentive to Boofy, clare, and anyone else who sounds like
they have a collection which I could never listen to without their help?)

There is, however, an additional caveat, I really really need more than
one. Minimum two, hate to sound demanding, more is better ;), but what I
want I have not got...

Behind Curtain number2:
now I admittantly don't know what I am getting myself into with this, but I
am seriously considering buying a mid-level analogue recorder so i can
start taping some shows. I still need to do some shopping and some
interviewing of admitted tapers (Boofy?), but there is always that
possibility that I will try and tape the Philly show...assuming link
available...and perhaps just the mere possibility is enough to sway your
thought process in my favor...

why did you bother to subscribe if you hate them.
--- end of quoted material ---

I did NOT subscribe to this list, i was somehow put on it as some kind of
marketing ploy to get me to buy tickets to the show when the band comes here.
I didn't know it was possible to subscribe someone else to a newsgroup but
evidently it is. I guess its easy enough to get someones email address
though. I really do not have a great hate for Dave Matthews( though the music
is not my cup of tea), i just felt the urge to flame a newsgroup that is
filling my computer with messages. I am on several other similar groups
currently so I really do not need a large dose of new messages for no apparent
reason. Whoever thought of the bright idea to add a bunch of random people to
this list must have realized people would flame just for the fun of it or
because they were actually pissed off. I am more amused myself by this than
pissed.
connection whatsoever to seattle/grunge bands. And they are certainly not
standard MTV fare. DMB may not itself be a contrived band, but they are being
followed by people who I see as being possibly insincere and trendy. I fear
for the DMB that they would be turned into another Phish or Blues Traveller by
people who realize that the Dead are getting tired, and must find a new band to
follow around and put their stickers on their Saabs of volkswagens as they
wear birks and yet are somehow more in touch with the earth and and more
peaceful than me.
something like that.
Cowboy Junkies, My Bloody Valentine, and Uncle Tupelo especially for music that
isn't "contrived" as I say.

'Kay, quick response to sumthin boof said...
Yes, I agree that some recording of a great show is better than none. But
if good exist...(and what I hoped I was getting)*

Also, I did not mean to directly accuse anyone of deliberately deceiving
me. Intellectually, not an issue. Emotionally, being occassionally
reactionary, there is the Feeling of being fooled (located right of the
heart, just above the stomach and akin to briefly losing one's breath)
which is probably not very different than being disappointed and looking
for a scape goat.

I'm looking for fraternties and nightclubs in Virginia that' be

Please respond personally, to me, at
