DMB in Florida

Supposedly (and I mean supposedly), DMB and BHT are supposed to play at 
the University of Florida sometime around the beginning of April.  From 
what I hear it will be in the O'Connel Center which sits about 9,000 for 
a concert.  There's gonna be two other bands playing as well... all for 
the meager price of ten bucks for UF students.  Probably will cost fifteen 
for everyone else.  Anybody else in Florida hear this ?

Its not Matt Hamill's fault

First of all, I will say that I do not know Matt Hamill, nor have I ever even
heard of him, so I have no reason to try to protect him.
Now to my point.  Is not the reason that most people subscribe to Minarets.net
because they WANT to talk about and hear about this greatest of all bands????
I doubt there is anybody who can dispute that.  Well, then it is not Matt
Hamill's fault that he got onto this net, assuming he is telling the truth
about why he is here.  It is the person on the program board, the brainchild
who decided that the best way to get people to buy tickets and go see this
concert would be to subscribe them to this sometimes overwhelming list in terms
of its magnitude.  Yea, and then lets get their credit card numbers and buy
CD's for them and surprise them again.  ANyways, you get the point.  THe best
thing to do is not to flame him back, but to tell him how to unsubscribe, which
is what he probably wants.  If you want to reflame anybody, find out the genius
who subscribed all these people to the net just because they go to Dartmouth or
wherever Mr. Hamill goes.  Maybe a better idea for Mr. Program Board supervisor
would have been to have the Minarets address on the advertisements.  Anything
would have been better.  Its kind of like your parents buying a "nice looking"
new pair of pants for you in the 3rd grade without any input from you and
making you put them on to go to school while you where still sleeping.
Although that would be hard, unless you sleep as soundly as me, but that's not
important right now.  I could tell you all the story about that, but then I'd

somehow I am getting things sent to me because of this because we have the same
initials.   I can be reached by email through mjh@dartmouth and maybe he can
too.  This should not happen though, I could be completely wrong.   No one I
have talked to you today has received anything fromn your group, however.
students to this newsgroup there would be others responding to this list.

Help with shows

First off, I am new to DMB.  I have both CD's, but only have 2 shows and am 
greatly in need of more.  From what I've heard from these two shows and 
being a musician myself, I am already classifying and respecting DMB as one 
of my very favorite bands.  I am hoping to set up some trades where I can 
get some more great DMB.  If anyone is interested in trading for some BT, 
WSP, ABB, or a variety of other bands from U2-Hendrix please mail me and 
I'll send my list.  I am really eager to be completely turned-on by this 
band and at this point can't imagine ever getting  enough DMB.

this tape thing

ok--i gotta agree with boofy on this one...
i recieved a (probably) fifth generation or so...
of a tape i wanted....and i generally like only
hq dubs...but i got this
and it is increadible......i mean..he
doesnt sound like hes in a can....but maybe
has a cold...(and he didnt cause i was at the show)

but it is different.... a little muddled and
i think somewhere alon the way, a tape machine was running slow
or fast or something...and my best of whats around sounds like
a fucking funeral durge...i loooove it...

i mean, i have enough normal copies of ants
it was surprising to get this, but even more
surprising to love it...

better than cats....and i will be happy to tape
it for ya marrianne, because it's good

just different....

no can....no level changes

just a slug-like version of a good faster tune....

O.k., this has probably been brought up a zillion times.  I didn't see
it in the FAQ but that doesn't mean it's not there-I am notrious for
overlooking the obvious.  My heartfelt apologies to all, dear readers.
However, in my effort to perfect my procrastination technique it occurs
to me to ask if anyone has actually seen anything in the 3-d pic on the
album cover or poster of the album cover?

in fact, i thought that was the cover, until someone asked me about
the cd with all the dots on it....

of course...i probably helps that im colour blind...

it actually resembles any other stereogram colour
blind test, to me....except that its a better picture

not just numbers and lines...

NEW ORLEANS SOLD OUT

Dave sold out the House of Blues in New Orleans in just TWO DAYS.  This 
is BEFORE the new HOuse Of Blues calendar was even released!  
Unfortunately I was unable to get a ticket (I didnt even know they would 
be on sale yet!)...  Luckily, Blues Traveler had not sold out (Feb. 16) 
the night before so I picked one up for the hefty price of $17.50!  whEW!

If ANYBODY KNOWS HOW I CAN GET A TICKET PLEASE CONTACT ME!!

I doubt that you will read this because you have already unsubscribed, but that
is probably better so we don't have to hear from you again.

I've got a tape from columbia SC with no date.  I know that it is not the show
in late Jan or Feb of 94 at Rockafellas.  I believe it is from a homecoming
party that about 50-75 people showed up for.  of note on the tape and this
strictly from memory are  Tripping Billies (old into) and Familiar Situation.
Appreciate any help

Dave on Dave would be cool little thing.  someone was worried about Mr. Paul
Schafer (I murdered it I know) playing with dmb, but didn't he record with BT
on their last album.  I was surprised and found kind of funny.

well well .. ive jsut reached the guy that i was supposed to get tapes 
from for this tree 
he said ... that he had gotten his yet , plus he was leaving for a 
semester away by the end of this month
sooo either .... someone needs replace him on the tree .... or jsut call 
it bust for everyone under him .. i think thats like the whole bottome 
half of the tree ..unless im way mistaken which is very likely

Hi everyone, you don't really know me, but I've just joined the minarets and
I love to read all your little notes and find out more about the band.  I'm
15 years old (for your survey) and I heard about DMB from my sister who goes
to Duke University!!!  She's been to a couple concerts and I finally got to
see them live in St. Louis.  Does anyone know how I could get any
live-bootleg  versions of DMB besides the recently ablum.  I would really
appreciate it.

Im just sick of seeing Dave and co have to play concerts and
*PERFORM* every night, as opposed to just going out, having a
good time, and if someone fucks up a song, then hell, there's
always next Tuesday night.  I'm sick of the crowds being drunken
frat boys wanting to drink beers, scream "DAAAAVE!!!" or
"BOOOYYYYDDDD!!!" and pass each other around at shows RATHER than
just grooving to the music.  Im sick of Satellite being 1.7 miles
per hour.  Come to think about it...I dont think I want to see
Dave live much anymore at all...paying $25 dollars to hear _Under
the Table and Bleeding_  perfectly and identically reproduced on
stage really isnt my idea of a good time.  I think I'm going to
go listen to my old, fuzzy, barely audible copy of 11-17-92 and
remember what that show was like when I saw them play it...and
get lot within the keyboards in Cry Freedom or the maniacal
Violin in the Blue Water Baboon Farm...


Anyone care to join me???

First of all, I'm a hotass and can write what I want where I want.  I
don't need some candyass to tell me what I can and cannot do.  I
enjoy the DMB as much as you, but what I don't enjoy is freaks
writing about all the miniscule shit!  I want to know when they are
playing and about new albums coming out or whatever.

***If thats it then just call 804-980-9636 BUT please do be careful 
***because they also tell you where they are playing, but you dont have 
***to listen to that (its your right.) And dont expect a new album for at 
***least nine months to 1 year.

What I don't need to know is the frigging set list to when they played
Pigsknuckle, Arkansas in '91 and how long their version of Christmas
Song played.

Another thing I don't care for is wondering why Leroi
Moore played a alto sax in the album version of Ants Marching and
played a tenor sax at the show in Fucking, Washington.  That's a
bunch of bull shit that is just wasting band width.  Don't even start
telling me that I'm wasting band width.  I'm just pissed off at all
the stupid people that write in to this net.  And why do I stay on?
No, it's not to piss off individuals and have them write me
personally.  It's because I like the band and want to find out some
things, but not rip the shit together.  And by the way, it's my
right...

Hey all,


Nov 17 Dave announced at the Fox show (Boulder) that they would be 
shooting it the next day at 3 if anyone wanted to show up

The girl Dave talks to who doesn't want them to do it...well you can hear
her say it on the tape"don't do it Dave" etc.

Nov 18 we all show up an wait to be let in INCLUDING THIS GIRL who tells 
him not to do it.  You can also see her inthe front row on the video.
I think it's rather sad.

Anyways, that day they played WWYS over and over while they shot the video.
That nightt they played the first set with huge lights and WWYS twice amongst
others.  
the rest is history.

Dave in VT

Dave and BHT will be starting their little tour on the 26th in 
Burlington, VT. When purchasing the tickets, I was bummed to hear that 
Dave would be opening, but just also glad to be able to see them. Well, 
on the radio today, the guy says that DMB will be the headliner due to 
all of the responces. Wow! Pretty cool.

I think Anne was his sister, as was discussed here some time ago.  The 
kid in his arms is Anne's.  Yes, Anne's dead.  Sorry I don't have more 
info; I'm sure someone does.

Unless I'm very (happily) mistaken, there is no Phish spring tour this 
year.  I believe the boys are planning on playing in the summer though.

why i think tim should be in DMB

HELLO all---

with about ten other people at the raven and crown here in LEX. 
He is a GOD-- it was the first time i had seen him alone and i was blown 
away the man can do ANYTHING with a guitar....(just listen to TR3 album 
"shifting currents")

I've seen him with dave and it is equally amazing the two of them sound 
perfect together.
I have never seen tim with the whole band but have a few tapes with this 
(the 3/8/93 floodzone show for Miquel comes to mind -the best jimi thng 
ever)   tim adds a lot to the band..
HE SHOULD BE A MEMBER OF THE BAND  -his talent is enough reason
but another guitar adds a whole other dimension to the band  i.e.
having tim would allow for many more solos and for extended jams.. it 
would also add to the diversity of sounds...Tim is a master at using 
funky effects ..he loves to play slap and uses a waa-waa to create a real 
trippy sound

Why isn't he in the band  -rick or boofy or some other learned person 
(ben) is there some reason why he isn't in the band or is it just a 
random thing..

one final point  -tim is a great artist and his music really reflects 
that..his name is preety well known, at least in these parts, and even so 
only 10-15 people wen to see him last night. I think this is because few 
people really appreciate art... the crowd at recent dave shows is there 
for other reasons not to admire an artist...I think adding EVEN MORE 
artistry to DMB would not only sound amazing but would also keep away 
some top 40 types...

one more reason-- tim loves to play marly tunes like natural mystic and 
zimbabwe-- two great songs

Help My Tree!

NOOOOOOOO!  It seems that the Wait tree I set up is starting to fall 
apart!  Please, please don't let this happen.  I am still waiting for my 
seed (DAN!?!) so there is nothing I can do at the moment.  Now reports of 
an upperlevel branch going away soon?  Please contact me if you are 
involved in this.  Also if you have given up on this tree and abandoned 
your kids, either don't or get in touch with me.  I am praying to see my 
seed in the mail today!

what's the point?

Im just sick of seeing Dave and co have to play concerts and
*PERFORM* every night, as opposed to just going out, having a
good time, and if someone fucks up a song, then hell, there's

much crap about "how this band was so much better when i had them
all to myself" deleted because it's been heard on every listserv
in the country over 69 million times (on each listserv, that is).

remember what that show was like when I saw them play it...and
get lot within the keyboards in Cry Freedom or the maniacal
Violin in the Blue Water Baboon Farm...

this gets the "i'd rather be on phish.net" award for the week ending
1-14-95.  you definitely weren't at lexington, which was 11-9-94 in
case you don't know.  TWO months ago.  where dave virtually butchered
the second verse to jimi-thing.  where dave band brought out not one,
but two new songs, the second of which was written THAT DAY.  where
dave stood in front of a crowd of 5-6000 people and told them all
specifically that they were scaring him "shitless."  personally, i'd
say your so bummed that the crowds are getting so big that you're 
losing touch with the fact that the band _is_ getting on stage and
having a good time.  not just "performing"  (context?).

now, to finish this off, i'd have to say that to any and all people
listening that in your journies through the internet and through
life, don't bitch when something you appreciate grows beyond your
expectations.  eventually your either going to start a flame war
(argument) or some holier-than-thou asshole such as myself is going
to try and put you in your place (or both).  

if you don't like what dave band is doing now,  don't listen to it.

if you don't like what dave band did then (which i suspect is highly
likely [in fact, i know it is]), don't listen to it.

differences of opinion are know reason to call something "shit," unless

actually, in the pre-r2t days, stefan used play around during the part
where tim reynolds appears with a solo i'll back you up.  gave it a really
wild feel.  almost any pre-november 93 tape with i'll back you up would
have such a creation.

beautiful beautiful day...lingering glances and a slowing of the step, warm
breezes and a still damp ground helps one remember the promises of rainbows
and joy of loving all life offers.  Thought about running around in the
park sans clothing, but couldn't find a dry place to stash my undies.

Yes, so thank you for all the gentle nudges from the wiser kind yesterday,
someone I think suggested a cessation of the tears, and so i have taken up
with a unique mutation of tribal stomping that looks pretty silly and an
aweful lot of fun... but it was Tony who finally woke me up...with big bear
hugs and gentle chastising as warm and soothing as spring rain and as
effective as Chinese water torcher...i've glimsed how spoiled I was...and
so, recanting with the zealotry of a convert...

I've got an offer...come one come all...if you haven't got it, this is as
good a chance as I can offer...

12/31/93 Marriott, set I,II for the first 10 people who tell me they want
it.  I'd prefer a common subject like Gimme NYE'93 so I can keep requests
straight.

ok ok i agree that sometimes the teenyboppers and good ol' boys get frustrating 
at shows, and i don't like getting kicked in the face or crushed in a sardine 
frat can either but i have to admit that when i first heard dave, on a poor 
recording in some tape player, drunk car ride, 1993 summer, that i couldn't see 
the light, genius, radiance of the music....it was only when i saw them live 
irving plaza nyc, that made me see them again, and again , and again, etc. and 
buy their mu sic and collect boots, and turn on everyone in the free world to 
dave....now i see the beauty even on scratchy-go-lucky worn down moth-eaten 
tapes...but it took a stompin, groovin, movin' kaleidoscope of people whirling 
and rockin, and being for me to see....see?  so wade i commiserate with the crap 
that you and i had to endure say in d.c. when fuckheads screamed through 
christmas song...pleading bovine adagios for "daveeeee"  but hey i love paying 
money for shows,,,i am a sucker...hooked, smitten, can't get enough...kill 
me....oh well enough melodrama...peace, deal.   eric

indeed you don't love me, never  have, and in your own words, 
probably never will....so i sit in pooling desperation, watching 
perspiration beads run down my sinewy sides, wondering if i can ever

question - does anyone know if and which band Dave was in before
this one? Do any tapes exist of Dave pre-DMB?

Also, while I'm here - I've been having these random thoughts about how big 


1. Casio markets the Dave Matthews Band calculator? 

2. They get invited to the White House and Bill sits in for Leroi?

3. I'll turn on the Galavision and see the the WWYS video

4. They open a "Day After Halloween" costume shop, where

I know there's enough corn in these jokes to feed a small village, but hopefully
someone out there found it funny :)

The best song to find stephans prominence is a song on 10/27/92 at Trax.
Dave says right before it "Stpehan's tune?" to the band (you have to 
crank it to hear it)
and its an incerdible jam biult around stephans bass work...

its on the raritites tape that I am almost finished with..and will be 
treed soon....

dmb in bmg ain't no big thing...

	Just to let people know how big dmb has become, over the recent 
holiday break I heard WWYS on the radio on the beach in Honolulu.  I was 
totally shocked.  Then today I opened my BMG catalog and there is UTTAD 
in the new bands section with BHT.  Whether people like it or not, dmb 
has arrived.

this has been mentioned a couple of times.  but it's really not that much
of a sign of their imminent success.  bmg makes (as in recorded, produced,
pressed, and sold/sells) under the table and dreaming.  seems logical
they would put it in they're mail order catalog.

2things. Since that day I have been advidly searching for everything DMB

the masters that i got did not have a correct setlist and i have all

Actually, he played they played BOWA at the show I went in to in San Jauan, it just seems likeall the playlitssts I seeaylists I see are missing it.  

OH, about the Jimi THinkg single, there ...it is actually I a single for What Would You Say? and Jimi THing is the B side.  IFrankly , I dont understand that, but what
does a scrub like me know.  They were handing them out like wildfire at the
Phish show in L.A. a couple waeaks eks ago.  Got my hands on one.  SOunds like

Hmmm... the people at Roseland said the 18th.

 I was told by "Tony" at Ticketmaster that tickets were not going to be
sold at Roseland or Irving Plaza.  Irving says they have no information til

bit insane if a show AT roseland was not sold AT roseland????  ticketmaster

I was looking through the chords file yesterday and noticed there was no 
True Reflections, so to help complete that file I tried to figure it 
out. I was using old copies of the song, so Peter often made it hard hear 
what Dave was playing, so the accuracy may be off.

Did you ever notice that line in Jimi Hendrix's song Castles Made of Sand,

She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore,
And through her legs she smiled, "you won't hurt me no more",
But then a shight she'd never seen before made her jump and say,

And it really didn't have to stop,

I know it's kinda depressing, but I really like the line before this,

that just seems so powerful...


Anyway, anyone got any clever interpretation of the last two lines of the
first section that I put up there...I'm just curious about it...I know this
has nothing WHATSOEVER to do with DMB, but there are a few folks on the
net that I am sure can give me some creative insight...thanks.


BTW, did you ever notice that there are a lot of negative people in the
world.  I think the weather here in Atlanta has got me in some sort of 
depressed mood...but I have really noticed the negative aspects of several
folks around me who don't normally seem that negative...weird.

I'm not trying to down anyone, actually, I just want some jelly beans...
sadly though, I have no money...Oh, I wish I had some jelly beans...
what's a pooh to do without his honey?

I glad there is a group, albeit electronic, that consists of several
pretty cool folks who tend to look at life in a rather melancholy way...
all you guys are pretty cool...even the one's who are sometimes negative.

Hey, guys, try to get your hands on a copy of "Life After God" by Douglas
Coupland...it's a really cool book...about life...and how we live it.
I just finished reading it...I can only say...WOW...pretty moving book.
D. Coupland is the guy who wrote the book Generation X that inspired the 
name of this generation that most of us belong to (according to the earlier
age survey).  He also wrote a pretty cool piece of fiction...Shampoo Planet
that I am about half way through...it's groovy, too.

Reading, 'riting, and debating on the topic of 'rithmatic...

Guys,  i must say,  new year's eve was a great show,  but about the same as
they all have been for the last year.  why would you pass around that show?
to,  even though he has achieved greatness.   I do also understand that there
are many to whom dave matthews is new,   so I do apologise for that.  But for
all you non rookies,  don't you guys have better shows to be trading?  

Just a thought.

they want it on dat...soooo...  they get it on dat...
i just thought i'd mention it to anyone who just over-looked
the dat choice because they didnt want to say anything....
someone will do it....but im still working with the dat people
to figure out who....

Hi again!

book in my school library by Dave's dad, John Wauchope Matthews.  I had asked Dave at the Houston show if his dad was really a physicist.  He said he was and had worked in superconductivity.  The book I found is a collection of materials
science articles on epitaxial crystal growth.  ONe of the articles is by his dad.
I guess he worked at the IBM Watson Research Center in Yorktown.  It has some 
cool crystal micrographs that look similar to the background of the fire dancer
shirt- which Dave told me was a picture his dad had taken of cobalt and boron.

Nope, I haven't had any luck finding anyone who taped this!!  I couldn't get
tickets to the show, but from what I understand the soundboard was isolated
up on a balcony or something, and nobody I knew could get to it.  Does anyone
else have any more info, or know if there are tapes out there?  I would love
to get a copy too...

The good news is, I've finally gotten in touch with the guy who taped Austin
on 12/15/94 (including the Tower performance), and have blanks in the mail
to someone who taped in Dallas.  I'll keep y'all posted...

called the Great Dobro Sessions

getting a bit of samba...

[it's great being undigestified!]
this is a FANTASTIC CD, btw.    got it at Hear Music in CT-- where you 
can listen to it before you buy it-- and it only took one track, and i 
was sold!

i've been trying to find TR3 up here in Penna, but no joy    :(

hello all, straight from the land of student riots and kim chi, i bid thee
greetings...i hope that all of you had pleasant and blissful holidays which
will continue throughout this new year...does anyone what year this is
according to the chinese calendar?...anyway, on my search for the perfect pair
of pajamas i found a rumpled and diseased magazine on the ground...oh mom and
keith, you are really going to dig these pajamas...they are *so* choice :)...
oh yeah, anyway, i found this magazine on the ground, and i hate to see a
paper publication go to waste, so i picked it up and threw it in my backpack...
when i finally went home, i was immediately disgusted...this was an issue of
"request" magazine, probably the worst "music magazine" in existence...i should
have just recycled it...i begin flipping through it and my disgust withered
away...i found an article on our boys from charlottesville...here is a

Dave Matthews, his naivete not yet obscured by the confidence of creating a
tidal wave in a billion-dollar industry.  "I guess we had an urgency that made
people notice us.  Local businesspeople just attached themselves to us and
wanted to help.  Even our manager worked for free for a year to try and prove
himself to us.  It's still hard for me to believe."
Matthews Band squeezed into a hectic four years what bands like the Grateful
Dead took a decade to accomplish.  All this after the group politely declined
its first major-label offer following just two years of playing out.  "I
thought to myself, 'We've been playing as much as we can for the past two years
and building this fan base.  Now, they want to release an album and get all the
money.'"
the band's self-produced/distributed debut, "Remember Two Things", sold more
than 100,000 copies.  Not bad for a $12,000 investment.  Armed with an
impressive balance sheet, the group not only had its pick of labels but was
able to negotiate an artist-friendly contract.  Now, everybody's accountants
are smiling.  The recently released "Under the Table and Dreaming", on RCA,
number :)), and the band regularly has sold out 3,000-to-4,000-seat theaters.
And while you've got your calculator handy, the group also receives more than
$1,000 worth of merchandise orders every day.
as much reverence as he does his music.  The venture has kept the band
"comfortable" through its sale of everything from hats, posters, and T-shirts
to an official band screensaver.
Africa, who moved with his family to New York City when he was two.  When his
father died, his mother moved the family back to Johannesburg, where Matthews
finished high school.  Soon, he was back in the States bartending in
Charlottesville, where, about five years ago, he assembled a tight-knit,
mutilracial band.  Driven by those crack players, Matthews grew musically as
well as spiritually.  "I was way behind them, " he says.  "In the late '80s, I
was strumming in my bedroom.  I had musical ambitions but they were mainly in
the dream category.  I think the thing that attracted them was my writing
style."

1/06/94 tape?

I'm new to this whole minarets deal, and this is my first 
post.  I was wondering if tapes of a 1/06/94 show with the Samples at Vail, 
CO, or a 5/14/94 show with BHT in Denver, CO, existed.  Vail was my first 
DMB show, and I would love to get a tape of it and the Samples if possible 
since Boyd joined them for a couple songs.  I'm a newbie, and although 
I will hopefully be getting my first tapes in a little while, I don't 
really have anything to trade.  However, I would definitely be 
willing to send blanks and what not to any kind soul out there who 
could help me out, if the tapes even exist.  Thanks for any help.

playing in hampton, va the 26th, wash, dc, the 27th, and richmond, va the

in case any of you were wondering, my little game of mystery tape theater
(tm) was answered by the one and only hippie-lover-mc chardy. 5/13/92, though
i don't know if he knows the venue since my mail is so fucked up that the
only three things i get are mail from minarets, phish.net, and other people
on aol... bleh bleh bleh.  thankfully i won't have to deal with this much
longer but more on that later.


i think someone should arrest keith for abuse of periods.  heh heh his posts
remind of this hyperactive guy i know who is on more ridlin (or however you
spell it) than anyone should be.

marianne and other roseland-concert-going-types... please please please lets
find out when tickets go on sale.  HoB in new orleans sold out in two days,
and no offense to that fine fine southern city which i've never been to, but

LAST time??  gosh it's all so frightening and sad and exciting.


bonus points to anyone who can tell me what song, album, and band the subject
is from... and chardy never said if he was down with our little cancerband...
but then again neither did emily... everyone go see higher learning and get
the soundtrack... and while you're at the bookstore getting the celestine
prophecy or whatever it's called, buy some poetry... plath or ferlinghetti
being the preferred choices...
