dsb9a@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Thu Jan 26 07:50:16 1995

my b-day, i'm going to make the following offer. i am putting together a
dave video tape with all of the hype that is hitting our idiot boxes. thus,
for the first three people to respond to this message, i will hand out copies
of this video. all you have to do is send me your mailing address and it
will be on its way once it is completed.

the video will contain the WWYS video, the vh1 interview with dave, the house
of blues thing once it airs, and hopefully the letterman deal if it airs.

sooooooo, get your fingers clicking back to me if you want it. i'm taking
the first three people (NOT COUNTING Cliff or Ellis, who will receive their
own copies). please respond with "FREE STUFF!" in the subject line of your
message.

DMB, the video and the selling out of his soul

JOGRIFFITH@vaxsar.vassar.edu Thu Jan 26 12:03:03 1995

Hmm...I have too much to say to be brief.

I also have too much of a thesis to say what I feel/mean...

But DMB is a great band and Dave seems to be an amazing person/writer/poet.

I saw the video and I think it could have been better. However it also
have this joie de virve that few do...the color and some of the textuality
oif the non live stuff was interesting and I want to see it again. How
many times do y u say that about MTV???

generous to send out DMB shows quicly and I have been lame and slow.

they are all going out as soon as I finish my thesis which is only a few days
from being complete (Its on Orson Welles and The Lady from Shanghai if any
one is interested...) thank you thank you thank you as Bono said in Dublin.

I dont think they have yet...but the Samples example is interesting...

The Spin Docs is perhaps more pertinent though...any way more about that later.

DMB is a breath of fresh air...if they can continue to be they are successful.

As Dave i he has sold out. If he doesnt think so and if he doesnt give you
some lame reason...like the Docs did....then be happy for him.

sorry for the typos....its the VAX...only the VAX man.

PS I am LURKER extraordinairre.....!

pps anyone else going to the Smith concert?? Fellow tapers?

UTTAD or R2T

JOGRIFFITH@vaxsar.vassar.edu Thu Jan 26 12:03:16 1995

Sorry...

I like UTTAD better than R2T I know that is blasphemy...

but Steve Lillywhite did a good job producing it....let's hear it for good
studio performances....sure it lacks the emotion of live stuff...

and the time tested ness and live feel of R2T but its great

instance of it appearing...

...it also appears on 6-9-92, as the first song in the

Videeeoooo!!

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Thu Jan 26 13:40:46 1995

Alright, I know this is getting kind of old for some of you, but I just
saw "the" video for the first time last night at about 12:45 on MTV. And
hey, they came on right before REM (good company, I'd say). Anyway the
cool thing about it was that I saw it at a bar (the infamous "Palms" in
Lexington- tee hee) and well, the guy sitting below the big screen TV
(with the volume off, as usual) decided to turn it all the way up.
Pretty fun, everyone in the place just sat there and watched it together
(with only a couple of "Man, this sucks..", but we just threw those
people out (just kidding, everyone's entitled to their own opinion). I
guess that most of us (the recently 21 year olds) were probably the last
generation to say that we saw these guys play in our basement, so I guess
it was ,like, one of those group bonding things. Anyway, I wont go into
analyzing the video, because, hey, a bunch of bands I like have made good
and bad videos, and you know, if you really like their music, it doesn't
make a damn bit of difference! So, next time you see it, check out "Leroi
in the Box"- you'lll know what I mean- Group consensus at the Palms
regarded it is the most random, yet hilarious part of the veedeeooo.
Later on

elsewhere, let me know so i can throw this on the tape if i'm able to get the

Any Atlanta

From MAILER-DAEMON@moose.uvm.edu Thu Jan 26 13:44 EST 1995

554 "|/usr/server/catmail -L MINARETS -f"... unknown mailer error 14

So. Is anyone in this place from Atlanta? DMB's concert here on the 27th was
sweet, Imean it was at the Fox, unfortunately I was in the nose-bleed section.
I liked the way in his Recently opening that he played "Broadway". I was lucky
enough to see him the next night in Birmingham, his intro to Recently was
Baby you can drive my car. I would love to get tapes of either of those shows.
Would give my kidneys or other tapes.

A lot of people may say that DMB is selling out, but to those people I say
no way, I mean you don't exactly hear him play the maker a lot in concert any-
more but he is so great in concert that when you have to condense greatness,
shorter songs occur. I just know that I love DMB. After my girlfriend and I
broke up that was all,(except for some blues and Jimi) I listen too for a month.
If you don't like a band because they are getting popular, what the fuck is
up with you, music is music and good music is good music. PERIOD.

And to the guy how wondered the words to #34. I've got a tape where he sing them
before the song apparently stop having them.

Feelings On Revoked Taping Gift

50OGLESBY@CUA.EDU Thu Jan 26 14:15:48 1995

hey now,
decks has hit home. as i sit hear listening to a pristine Bagby from a
Dave/Tim show (12/12/93), i feel sorrow at our loss. we must remember,
however, that THE patch was a privalege (sp?), not a right. i feel that
soundboard tapes are needed to fully appreciate the Dave Matthews Band's
concert sound (unlike bands such as Phish, and The Grateful Dead). i know
that it isn't just me that cringes at the thought of hearing a 15 year old's
drunken banter in the middle of an audience recording of "Cry Freedom". to
me, the DMB isn't just about the music or the lyrics, but the sometimes
nirvanic (is this a word?) union of the two. i get chills when i hear a
really choice version of warehouse, and i know that this must happen to some
others out there! so, in conclusion, let's all continue spreading the years
of soundboard tapes that exist, and, most importantly, work on getting THE
patch back. thanx for your time.

Allow me to clarify...

 or.....who's anne
or ....what's that little metallic thing clamped to dave's shirt in the
 third picture in UTTAD...?
These, altough maybe not so enthralling to everyone, do at least relate
to the stated organizing feature of this particular net, and so are not
only tolerated, but in some ways encouraged, we all want to know every
little detail about dave, this is a place for answers and questions and love
and hugs, and spoons and sharing and caring and and and

Whereas this is an example of a different sort of post, still, in my book

hey tony....post a note....i've heard you have good things to say...you
make our cartel de strongeest in thee world, man....heheheh
dear marianne, this is just a personal note to you

these are personal posts WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A NOTE that include the
net in general, yeah personal posts are cool if the entire note is not in
and of itself exclusive by its nature. Things like that should be posted
personally...its like shouting at a party when you haven't got something
for everyone, "SO MIKE THAT'S A REALLY GREAT TIE YOU GOT THERE. I
BOUGHT A TIE LAST WEEK" there is always the cc function if you think a
few others might be interested in the convo...

stuff and visits and shows and goofy people and antics and other good
shows...and etc....even though ny rules and virginia is far away...

yes, but personal in nature, the laguage is inclusive, hey let me tell
you a story, not personally directed per se...

well this turned into a diatribe...but marianne...you love the
attention...and you know my heart is pure....and that im goofy and lovable

yes i do love the attention, i am such a good statistic, someone should
study me know, just because i'm here and i'm real...you are indeed goofy,
and um, yeah lovable i guess, aw come on--your the greatest, but i still
don't want to read every message you ever wrote to everyone on the net,

it.....if i can't fuck wwith you in person...then hey, electronic fucking
 is safe....

I'm waitng for the body suit...i want full body sensation, mind-fucks are
cool too, but i ain't lame, love-duck, i'll fuck right back, i am active,
ya know, like to churn my hips and sway with music, rub my cheek against
Woah ok later...

...im just having fun.....and by the way....im done with all my tests and

me too, though i admit to procrastinating...

peace and inspiration,
marianne

spot one? How can you tell a minaret from a general DMB fan? Do we
posess any distinctive markings? (except maybe being cross-eyed from
gazing at a computer screen for too long) Sorry this is such a rambling

Leftover Slamon, Shannon Worrel and the like may be good and all, but isn't
this the DMB net. Just some food for thought cause I am really sick of
getting TOO much mail about OTHER bands. Occasional posts are fine since I
love finding new bands, but I want to hear about Dave, not about some band

Re: Max points stuff

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Thu Jan 26 15:56:45 1995

I just mailed in about 7000 points to Maxell. Now you know where all my money
goes :-) Don't get their headphones, and you can get a better deal on the
box. The best thing to get from them are the CDs or the blank tapes. Call
them at 1-800-648-4641 and ask for a redemption sheet. Ask them to send you 3
sheets so that you have enough for your points. It will take them a while, but
it will show up eventually. You can also photocopy it and place the little
stickers the photocopy. So always keep at least one of those blank so you have
an endless supply of redemption sheets. You can also ask them to send you
their listing of CDs which you can get from the points. Blank Tape=150points
and CD=750points.

Peace!

klong@nysernet.ORG Thu Jan 26 16:03:39 1995

First off, I want to preface this post with a plea to send
responses to me. If someone wants a summary, I will gladly
let you know what I find out, but I want to keep from flooding
the list with non-related DMB stuff.

I am interested to know how many of you work/volunteer/whatever
for your local college radio stations. If you don't mind sending
me e-mail, I'd like to ask you some questions about how you do
things.

Anyway, thanks for your time and I now return you to your regularly
scheduled programming.....

not a one?

lono@brahms.udel.edu Thu Jan 26 16:30:39 1995

I'm taking it that, other than Beth, no one knows anything about
Indecision or how to get ahold of Indecision BTLGS?

YIKES

I'm also taking it that none of you know anything about an era in DMB's
carrer previous to the appearance of Boyd Tinsley...much less where I
could find BTLGS of those shows?

DAMN

didn't see the video...won't comment
To be honest, I was pretty damn tweaked to hear that they are as big as
they are now. They have been a bar band as long as I can remember (which
is a GOOD thing, the sound and intimacy of a bar is unrivaled by the
bigger, Ticket-Bastard controlled venues), and to hear them on the radio
is cool, but I have trouble with the song selection. WWYS is okay. I've
heard other tracks from the album and even live footage on WXPN
(university of Pennsylvania public radio), but the big stations are stuck
on that one song.

Kinda like they were stuck on "Down w/ Disease" when it Hoist first came
out.

Ah well, the music industry never ceases to amaze me.

Another thing, what's with he big cheesy stage for House of Blues? Looks
like something off of Sesame Street...Am I wrong? I don't think I could
take myself, much less a big name band, seriously standing on a stage
like that. It's MTV gloss (I know it's not actually on MTV, that's an
"artistic" term, I guess...bleah)

Awright, enough from me....sorry to bitch

Any info about Indecision or Oooooooooold DMB would be appreciated!

Re: Max points stuff

ddevito@copper.helios.nd.edu Thu Jan 26 16:59:55 1995

I just mailed in about 7000 points to Maxell. Now you know where all my money
goes :-) Don't get their headphones, and you can get a better deal on the
box. The best thing to get from them are the CDs or the blank tapes. Call
them at 1-800-648-4641 and ask for a redemption sheet. Ask them to send you 3
sheets so that you have enough for your points.

This may not work. Explanation below.

it will show up eventually. You can also photocopy it and place the little
stickers the photocopy. So always keep at least one of those blank so you have
an endless supply of redemption sheets.

This is a good idea, because I just got yet another order from my pal
Ken at Terrapin Tapes (800 677 8650 I think, not sure, but if that's
right tell him you're all net-literate and he'll give you 5 cents
off all his tapes, which are pretty inexpensive to begin with), and
with the obligatory sheet for MaxPoints came a note saying that this
was the last of them. For how long? I don't know, but if Ken can't
get a hold of them (he sells a lot of tapes and people depend on him
having sheets), then I imagine Maxell doesn't have too many, either.
So start hoarding those blank sheets, folks, and if you can't find one,
I'll happily spin some for you for blanks (sheets of blank paper) and
postage, so you can have your own copies.

their listing of CDs which you can get from the points. Blank Tape=150points
 and CD=750points.

The selection isn't the best in the world, but you can get some
pretty cool stuff (I just got "Hoist" the other day, I think that
was about the 10th free disc I've gotten from them).

Have a grateful day,
Dominator

PS if you do order a CD, be prepared to wait about 3 months to get it.

I'm a brand new newbie to the list, so I thought I'd let my presence be known.
I only have a few boots, and I'd love to get more (and hide them from my

since I'm a very broke tarheel, but I can put people up for the night if
and when Mr. Matthews Esq. decides to grace the Triangle area (raleigh,

slight stumble from bar row. I also make a mean eggplant parmesian.

that's my $0.02....thanks for being there for my catharsis.

Something I found on dead-f

Hey people, I found this little tid-bit in dead-flames,

***Begin copied text***

I know that this is the Dead newsgroup, but was the best place I knew
to find
what I'm looking for. If anyone has or knows where to find Dave
Matthews Tapes
I'd like to trade with you. My e-mail is levi@gar.union.edu.

                                     Gratefully, Ian Lev

I knew that name sounded familiar (I graduated from Union in '87). Try
asking at D Chi or A D -- especially when you know that a lot of alums
will be around (like homecoming, inititiation or Graduation). I'm
pretty sure Mathews was a D Chi brother.

Ha, ha, ha!

That made me laugh. But wait, I know Dave went to high school
in South Africa, but I can't remember if the faq said where he went
to college. Did he go to college?I emailed the dude and told him what
I knew.

Dave's Rig!

icculus@student.umass.edu Thu Jan 26 17:24:06 1995

Does anyone out there know any technical information about dave's guitar. I
know it is a Gibson SST Chet Atkins. I have played several SST's, but have
not found one identical to Daves. Is it custom made? I have played his
guitar, but it did not have the bogus sound-hole that his has. Also, has
anyone seen dave with an acoustic. I know his guitar is technically acoustic,
but it is a solid-body and needs amplification. Also, I believe he plugs in
directly to the board...is this true? If anyone knows any specific, or is
selling a SST, please drop me a note.

out from under the table...

Lumpysnake@aol.com Thu Jan 26 17:28:16 1995

Hello friends known and known not-

I've been laying under your table for the last few months - I think since
November- just kinda dreaming and enjoying the view. Alas, I finally chime in
for the first time. You probably won't hear a lot from me as I'm kind of
partial to the under side of the table, i.e. perusing, eavesdropping,
scanning, lol, etc. Nonetheless I suddenly and without explanation have been
compelled to say hello and ask a couple questions while I'm here. Forgive if
these things have been hashed out, but I travel a lot and my attention to
Minarets has been catchascatchcan while on the road...

First heard "of" DaMaBa through the phish.net, which doubtlessly surprises no
one. First "experienced" DaMaBa in Tampa Fl at the Ritz (Ybor City) last
February. A ticket cost me $4!! What a blast.... my friend bombed out on me
so I made the 90 minute trip from Orlando solo. Got there plenty early and
plenty hungry so I decided to get a Cuban (sandwich) before heading inside.
The restaruant was pretty quiet, with a few folks sitting at the bar and a
couple tables occupied. I looked around, did some people watching, ate my
sandwich, drank a few beers and headed for the Ritz. I met a few people
inside and made chit chat while waiting for the show to start. The lights go
down, the band takes the stage and lo and behold, the guy with the fiddle was
sitting just down from me at the restaraunt! "Ha!" I thought, "that's pretty
cool." I dig it when a band/band members are willing/able to blend in with
the local scene of their gigs. I immediately felt a friendliness between the
band and audience. Of course I'm sure it helped having only a hundred or so
people in attendance. Don't suppose there are any tapes out there....?
Anyway, I really enjoyed the show and have enjoyed DMB nearly everyday since
then. My only other live experience was in Birmingham when they played with
PHiSH this past fall. Good show, but I much preferred them on their own in an
intimate setting.

Now a question.

1) I bought a DaMaBa t-shirt in Birmingham. It's the maroon/wine colored
shirt with the Dave design of the two figures on the front. On the back it
has the heirglyphs/symbols... what do these signify? It reminds me, quite
obviously, of Led Zep's symbols each member adopted at the time of their 4th
album.

Thanks Ben (NebuIous) for getting me "minaretted." I've been here since you
sent that info to me, but as mentioned just lurking.

c u all around,

Todd

the root

PARISIGRE@urvax.urich.edu Thu Jan 26 17:30:30 1995

Sorry for the non-Dave stufff, but there are more Richmonders on this net
than on Rusted Root's so I would like to ask if anyone has an extra ticket
or two for Saturdauy's RR show at the Flood Zone, as it is now sold out
everywhere. Please let me know.

As for Dave, in light of the new taping policy, I think that makes New Years
Eve the last legally taped show. Can't wait for it to arrive. Feb 15 is
definitly sold out now as well, second hand rumors tell me. I don't even
want to discuss a couple threads that have been running here, all I want
is a Rusted Root ticket for a friend. So I'll leave out my $.02 which has
pretty much already been stated anyway.

I have a tape where he introduces Help Myself sort of like this. He says
this song has some pretty parts and some ugly parts. I agree that even the
Dave songs that I don't entirely enjoy always have some interesting aspect.

buttons and stuff

73KIMBERLING@CUA.EDU Thu Jan 26 17:54:37 1995

Did anyone ever look into getting Minarets buttons or pins made up for people
on the net? I think this is a pretty good idea. I showed up at the Bender
show in December with a pocket full of tapes to trade. (Okay, so it wasn't a
really big pocket) I was about twenty minutes late for the gathering scheduled
at 7:00. When I got there, I couldn't tell if Minarets people were still there. or not.
Anyway, I suppose I could have yelled "Hey Minaretters!" or something like that,
but that's not something I would normally do. Anyway, if we all had pins or
buttons, it would have been really easy to find everybody without looking like
a guy screaming in the middle of a crowd. So that's what I think...

Next, does anyone have any Gibb Droll to trade?

Last, not to beat a dead horse, but I'm gonna start my own clique. I'm the
only one in it right now, but it's gonna be real cool...secret handshakes and
stuff.

dmb on npr

WLASTER@Gems.VCU.EDU Thu Jan 26 18:41:40 1995

I was just chilling out to National Public Radio when I started
hearing some strangely familiar cords. As it turns out Dave was
being interviewed on the popular segment that the station does
called "all things considered". It was a refreshing piece after
being bombasted for much of the day with play by play proceedings
of what did/didn't happen in the OJ trial today. I thought it to
be a compliment to the band to get some air time on a station that
does not give much to the rock genre of music. The interview was
short but good, and many short takes of dmb favorites were spliced
in between questions. The band was introduced as one of the
hottest bands on this country's college music scene (I guess this
ever expanding network of followers is evidence of that). Dave
talked about his close knit family, and their influence on his
music. He also spoke of the formation of the band, his African
roots, and the future (which, of course, was quite vague). Anyway
it was a good segment for all who missed it, and Dave said the
band was excited about kicking off its tour tonight in Burlington.
As for me I'm anxiously awaiting the Valentines show.

Greg Howard set at TRAX

One45Blues@aol.com Thu Jan 26 19:06:41 1995

Hi folks,

This is week two on minarets for me, and having digested the FAQ and reviews
files, I'm here to ask for some help.

In the FAQ, it says that Greg Howard has played with the band--he's a Chapman
Stick maestro. I have both his CDs (not a stretch, I play the Stick, too).
What I'd like to find out is if anyone had her or his tape machine rolling
the night he did the solo gig in between DMB sets at TRAX (Ellis von
Lemuria??).

I'd love to get a copy of that show--and his set in particular. He's an
inspiration to all of us "Touchboard" players.

Any other DMB you'd like to trade, I'd sure be interested in doing so. I'm
sorta limited on DMB, but have loads of fresh Phish for your consideration.
Or nice blanks.

Thanks for your kindness,

to the extent that they can.......
oh...and save your breath...i know i know
you cant capture the same aura anf feel and
notes as a live preformance......well,
*that's* why i dont like it........in fact, that's
why i like live shows infinately more than studio
recordings........
now, dont get me wrong......the songs are good....
but with the exception of rhyme and reason,
those are some of my least favourite versions of those songs i
have ever heard...........
i am NOT saying they sold out, NOR
am i saying i expected more out of the cd....

shit, i just bought it last week.......
now, i have heard it a lot, but i never had any
reason to get it......because i have so many more
_really_really_ good shows......
i think im gonna give it to my uncle for his
birthday......he only has one show........
and he loooooooves it.....i hope he is not too
disappointed.......

im not even saying its not good.......
but gimme a break....when someone wants to hear the
dave matthews band, the last thing i would ever say
is....well, go get under the table...

i just mix stuff......warehouse from election day,
granny from 04.22.93, WWYS from 03.10.94,
any noise from 07.14.93, halloween from recently ep,
best of what's around from tuscaloosa last xmas,
cry freedom from 10.15.94, get in line from 10.11.94,
seek up from 07.24.94, spotlight from 12.09.92,
me&julio from 11.17.92, ants from 03.10.94,
nancies from 10.14.94, the maker from rutbga demo,
xmas song, from r2t (because i know dave wouldnt mind),
#36 from boulder, and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and o
n and on and on and on and ona dnonaodnanfonandonandonandon

THAT is the dave matthews band...........now, so is
uttad, but my family asks me what by them is good, and i say
give me a blank......

that is why i make newbie offers........

that is why i tree shit......

because if you all are here, then you must have some
interest in dmb..........

so, why would anyone on this net let anyone else
on this net settle for second best..........

that just doesnt make any sense to me..........

everyone with more than ten tapes should make offers.......

newbies shouldnt be newbies for more than a month, thats
what i say.......unless they want to......
whatever.......

uttad is cute.......i mean, this guy we all
know and talk about incessantly every day
has a cd out.....yippeee cool...........

but if you want the true dmb......then
catch him live.........

or get on a tree.........

or something.........

if you like uttad more than anything else
you've ever heard, then email me and send me
a fucking blank..........or get on japhy's tree
(because it just so happens that the boulder show
is good all around)......

it showcases all of their talents........
not something i can say about uttad, or anything
they will ever do in the studio............

if enjoy the showcased talents of uttad, then you are weird....
but that's just my opinion

and i would go as far to argue that lillywhite
is the only person uttad showcases.........he is
awesome..........

and i told dave all of this in atlanta.......
i didnt want to hurt his feelings, but he asked
my opinion.........and i had told him something
similar about 7 months before, so i just told him
and he agreed (somewhat) with me.,.....but that
only means we hold the same opinion..............

and it also means that we like live music much
better......much much better.......

if i had never heard the band, i would love the cd.....
but i have, and i dont.........
and that's me.........and he hasnt sold out........

and the cd doesnt suck

and it's not going to grow on me...........

this tape that tim just sent me (11.13.93)
and the other one he sent........(10.11.94)
and the one from patrick i got yesterday (10.15.94)

_those_ will grow on me......and grow and grow and grow.......
and i'm gonna offer them as an alternative to my eleven
newbies because japhy is treeing the boulder show, which
i orginally offered themmmm//////////....

and im gonna tape it for my sister and pak because they
both gave me eighty blanks last week, and it is guuuuuuuuuuuuud
if they want.........

the point is.......get the live music out.......
circulate circulate circulate.
i dunno how many people hop on this list daily
but most of 'em probably need tapes............

that is the least that we (who have been
here for a while) could do.........

unless you have different tastes........

and if that's the case, this post certianly
doesnt deserve a flame.....................

why?....because i dont flame anyone for their opinions.......
so if you do it back to me, then you're an asshole......

but if you desagree with me, then post it.....
or email me........koliver1@ua1vm.ua.edu
or call me.....205.750.0340.......i'll be happy
to listen to your opinion..........

later......

why big head todd?

gnkessle@mailbox.syr.edu Thu Jan 26 20:13:03 1995

i have been wondering why nobody has mentioned anything aobut big head
todd touring with dave. i am really excited to finally see dave come to
upstate new york but am not pleased with who they are touring with. we
are now paying a whooping $18.50(w/o ticket bastard charges) to see dave
and i want to see dave. I saw BHT at horde a few times and definitely was
not impressed. quite frankly, i do not like them at all. now, dmb's show
is going to be cut in half practically. my goal of this message is to try
to evoke a good conversation on the net that is current and relevant to
dmb. what do you guys think? did dmb management choose bht because they
think that most people equally like dmb and bht? i, personlly, never to
say the two bands in the same sentence.

this is only the second day that i have been on minaret so i don't really
know much about it yet. i just thought i would write this for the hell of
it. idon't really have anything to say right now but i'm sure i will later.
by the way, if anyone is interested in trading any bootlegs i would like to
know. i only have about 5 but they're pretty good recordings and they kick
ass. the ones i have are from nashville, richmond, charlottesville, one of
dave by himself supposedly from before he got the band together(i'm not
really sure though) and a couple of other shows. but if anyone is
interested in trading or whatever i would like to know.

p.s. if anyone knows anything about tour dates please let me know,

Don't think, just go. Then you'll know why you didn't have a very tough

I couldn't possibly agree more with eric d's essay on selling out. If I
had a dollar for every band that I 'discovered' when they were small and
then subsequently became popular, I'd have about five dollars. But if
the music is still good, I love the band anyway. The fun part is finding
the band and being one of the first, but there is no merit in the act
itself. If DMB became the next U2 or REM, so much the better. I would
be able to see them again then, cuz currently they dont tour in
 Minnesota. But anyway.

this cracks me up!!! i guess dead and phish fans fall into this too,

guess techincally they have been recorded by us....i guess this RCA guy

to see dave@trees the show sold out.. but i had tickets early.. im no
fool.. (well) anyway, i took my little bro (age 16, almost 17) and a
friend from outa town. when we got to the door, i gave my little bro my
id, that said that he was of age and two other ids with pictures and
proof of identity.. they still would not let him in.. ok no problem, i
was trying to break the system anyway, but man my little bro is the
bigest dmb fan in highschool in the south... he deserved to see them..
anyway, then i went in and they stoped my friend (from baton rouge),
asked for id, which he had a louisiana license and is 20.. but they asked
for TEXAS id and another form.. giveme a break.. this is not security
clearence.. its a fucking concert.. they nevver let him in and all i got
to say is that the whole situation sucked.. and should not have happend...

 This isn't a nightclub newsgroup.

I seriously doubt that the band or management has any control over

for all those coming to the dartmouth show with the intention of taping, save
yourselves a walk and leave your gear in the car. the programming board will
not be allowing any recording devices into the hall. they are aware that dmb
allows taping but since the other two bands don't, the programming board would
have to hold all the decks in another room until dmb's set, and they don't want
to be hassled with this. if you want more of an explanation, e-mail me
personally and i'll forward you the reply i got.

All this talk about crazy versions of Warehouse has made me a bit
thirsty. I (actually, my roommate and I...he'll probably read this
too) have about 15 bagbys, a modest collection, but not too shabby
for two guys way up here in Maine. Anyway, I'd be interested in
hearing one of these versions that are being talked about. Dates
have been flying around, but I don't remember them. So, if anyone
owns one of these (I'm being pretty vague, I realize) and is feeling
generous, let me know and we can set up a trade. Oh, and does anyone
out there in Daveland have a show with Anynoise/Antinoise on it?
I *think* that's about the only original, that I know of, that I
 don't have.

If you're currently down south, you may wish to hit the delete

ticket for the show Friday. I'm really looking for a traveling companion
from Burlington, who would be willing to share gas money(about $15-20
round trip between the two of us) and I was planning on coming back to
Burlington after the show. If you aren't from Burlington, but would still
like the ticket, email me in case I don't find anyone - very likely. I'd
much rather sell the ticket to another netter(for the $19 I paid for it)
than to someone else(for the same price of course). Peace-

I was just channel surfing. As I passed by eMpTyVee I heard Kennedy say
"Remember Two Things." Naturally this caught my attention. She spoke of it
selling 10,000 copies a month and how DMB now had a new CD. Blah, Blah, Blah.
Then after a commercial break there was the video on no other
than..."Alternative Nation." Before I had only seen it on "Dream time." It is
working its way to a buzz clip. I have that terrible feeling. It is better
than most videos. In fact, it is kinda growing on me. Just thought I would
 let ya'll know.

Also, I was listening to #34 the other day on UTTAD. In the middle there is
something said kinda faintly. Does anyone have any idea what that may say?

Lastly, I would really like to het a copy of the 11/9/94 show in lexington. I
have a very limited selection of tapes, but e-mail me personally and I will let
 you know my list.

One more thing, I am sitting here listening to 1/20/93 from floodzone. In the
middle of the intro to minarets, the music is stopped and dave says "I'm uh
goofy! Thank you very much!" Does any body know what the deal with that is? I
have not listened to this tape in a while, so I had forgaotten it said that.
 It is a good show!

just got back from trax (crossroads for those who will call it by the

a band called spidermonkey was headlining with slackjaw and shannon
worrell & "big muff" for supporting acts. i missed shannon and company due
to the fact that there was absolutely NO ADVERTISEMENTS for them
what-so-ever. slackjaw was incredible, as usual, and spidermonkey, well, you
 just had to be there......

anyway, after the show i got to hit backstage with 'jaw and ended up

I also have too much of a thesis to say what I feel/mean...

But DMB is a great band and Dave seems to be an amazing person/writer/poet.

I saw the video and I think it could have been better. However it also

many times do y u say that about MTV???

generous to send out DMB shows quicly and I have been lame and slow.

they are all going out as soon as I finish my thesis which is only a few days
from being complete (Its on Orson Welles and The Lady from Shanghai if any
one is interested...) thank you thank you thank you as Bono said in Dublin.

Re: why big head todd?

ddevito@krypton.helios.nd.edu Thu Jan 26 22:03:53 1995

i have been wondering why nobody has mentioned anything aobut big head
todd touring with dave. i am really excited to finally see dave come to
upstate new york but am not pleased with who they are touring with. we
are now paying a whooping $18.50(w/o ticket bastard charges) to see dave
and i want to see dave. I saw BHT at horde a few times and definitely was
not impressed. quite frankly, i do not like them at all.

Well, I saw BHT at Notre Dame (here, where I go to school) last
year about this time on a Tuesday, and it fuckin' ROCKED! Todd
Park Mohr can play guitar, and play it well. Now, I haven't heard
much of the new album yet, so I can't speak for the material that
may presently be in the playlist, but I do know that these guys can
cook, and I know many others on this list will agree with me. Now,
if you don't like them, go take a leak or get some soda or something,
just don't go into this with a closed mind and think that everyone
else should hate them too. If you paid your money, you have every right
to whine, but why ruin someone else's trip?

is going to be cut in half practically. my goal of this message is to try
to evoke a good conversation on the net that is current and relevant to
dmb. what do you guys think? did dmb management choose bht because they
think that most people equally like dmb and bht? i, personlly, never to
say the two bands in the same sentence.

I think if you look in the liner notes to R2T, you'll see that Dave & co.
thank BHT. Why? Probably for giving them some good exposure in
the far west, which never hurts an up-and-coming artist. Maybe Dave and
Todd talk on the phone all the time, who knows, but the point is there
are a lot of people who are willing to pay money to see these bands
together, and that is one reason why tours happen.

Tape ID time

ddevito@krypton.helios.nd.edu Thu Jan 26 22:10:47 1995

Hey now,

I got passed this bootleg tape from a friend who thinks that I am
the local DMB "expert" here on campus (not exactly true, but I try),
and I need to know what show this tape's from. I'm listening to it
as I type, so I don't know what's on all of it,but here's what I have

Some song (Two step?) with a keyboard player into a great keyboard jam.
Set break announcement

Pay for what you get
Lie in our graves
True reflection
NYE show announcement at the Omni hotel (Davespeak)
Satellite
Harmonica intro-
So much to say
Lover lay down

Can anybody help me? It's of decent quality, and I'm willing to
guess it's sometime in late 1992 as Dave is talking about an upcoming
NYE gig that costs $30. I don't know where my friend got it, but she
was in London last semester and she got to see DMB in a tiny bar with
about 200 people around Halloween, and if anybody has a setlist for
this show (she didn't know too much about them then), that would also
be appreciated.

Regards,
Dominator

This is a last-minute stab in the dark, but does anyone out there
know where I can get two tickets for Saturday's show? I've got two
extra tickets to the 02.02.95 show here at UMaine, which should
sound incredible considering the acoustics of Maine Center for the

i don't think. personally, i find thinking to be a vice. never think,
it'll lead people to thinking (even more, yuk) that you're responsible.

don't think.

but i think that there's gonna be a boatload of people there bitching
about this stupid band from charlottesville that's getting in the way
of their beloved bht's second set. i doubt bama rags "chose" bht,
more like the two managements came to an agreement.

Alright, I know many of you must like them, that's just opinion and
there's no reason arguing over opinions.(a la phish net) But I think
that you have to admit that these two bands' styles are too different to
be played on the same night. BHT's style is very loud, whereas
DMB's style takes on a much more acoustic feel (which I might not hear
because of the ringing in my ears from the previous act). I just don't
feel these two bands were placed on the bill together well.
What's up with these winter/spring tours?
Also I don't know what you mean by ruining other peoples' trips....I'm not
planning on ruining anyone's time on account of not enjoying the music,
I'll just sit back and wait(possibly out in the lobby, considering the
landmark has one of the nicest lobbies I've ever been in).

I think if you look in the liner notes to R2T, you'll see that Dave & co.

Usually that just means that they've played together before. They may
very well be friendly though, you may be right...Who knows?

My official $0.02 being tossed into the ring. I think DMB and BHT is a great
idea. I love both of these bands and only wish that they were coming closer to
Va. BHT is not very flashy in concert (but few trios are) but they are a very
POWERFUL band to see. Just all around great music. Their new album by the way
is great, not as good as Midnight Radio, buty good nonetheless. Just my humble
opinion.

I have to agree with Eric on this one. I think half the reason I
subscribe to Minarets is to meet cool people to talk to. You always have
something in common with everyone, we all love Dave's great music. It is
nice to have people you share something in common with sometimes 8-) Ah,
personal mail with little to no Dave content. I love it. We should all

Ouch!

Oh my, Minarets has been aflicted! Are we in store for a reposed digest
a day like Phish net? Oh well

I just saw a 6 tape player today. It has a drawer that hold 6 tapes! If
that thing could dubb all six tapes at once I would become the King of
Bagbys! I agree that DMB, and any other band, should be taped and traded
untill every person in the universe has access to DMB. I think that the
removal so the SBD patch, while somewhat reasonable, is not a good thing
for the DMB scene. I have heard very few Dave or other bands SBD's that
did not sound great and showcase the skills and talent of the band. But
I have heard many audience tapes that sound horrible, destroy a
tremendous preformance. I really wish we could get the SBD patch back
8-( I guess all you tapers better find mikes and practice at Phish shows

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Fri Jan 27 05:07:41 1995

edwin mccain ..... 01.26.95......
ivory tusk, tuscaloosa, al

first of all, the show was waaayy over 3 hours....
waaayyyyyyyyy....actually, it was almost four hours long....
and he didnt even take a break...

no shit...

i dont need to say much else.......but i will....

but no set list :(....i was way to zoned out to
remember the order.....but some highlights....

*...after two and a half hours, he said....we
should do an encore, and the band wants to rest, but im rollin
so fuck it....ill just do an accoustic set........
and he played for almost 40 min by himself........
ummm...wind cries mary, 3 am, hey joe, perish me..
yep..that was the acoustic set...

then the band came back, and they did 30 pieces with
blah blah blah blah hey hey goodbye, and gospel, and elp
interludes......that tune lasted about 35 minutes.w/ sm. solos from everyone...
then something, then closed with solitude....

nice nice nice show.........edwin _is_ the man.....
and after an hour or so, he was ON....
(a little rusty at first......didnt hold any early notes too long, etc)

but after the middle.....he was absolutely on...
no shit.....and the band jammed wit a capital j

imho, it will be well worth the trip to nashville just to catch
him and everything......next weekend....i highly highly
recommend it for anyone in the area,,,,,,,,

i just hope the tapes from tonight came out ok!

dmb content?????.....well, edwin did his
phat cover of watchtower.......

Waldo game....any way there is a band to go see tonight in charlottesville...
Aquarium Rescue Unit with TR3 opening....only problem is, that everyone I
knew who remotely thought they might wanna go to this show has bailed...
its just that it would be nice to meet up with anyone else on here who is
going. So e-mail me if this sounds like your cup of tea. Please don't
email me for not mentioning dave....I could start a vicious rumor that
dave will be there, but we all know thats not true....So there, at
least i mentioned his name...

smiles, hugs, and a friends to see shows with,
emily

dave and aru

cucr3@uxa.ecn.bgu.edu Fri Jan 27 11:36:12 1995

that emily mentioned aru. I was in Colorado this summer, and read an
article about them, but didn't have the chance to see them play, since
they were there the day after I left. Since then, I have noticed that
several of the bands that I have been listening to, incl. dmb, the
samples, and FJB, have thanked them in the liner notes. Any info as to
what their particular sound is, or if they are playing any shows in or
around Illinois, would be greatly appreciated.

were excellent. next was at the HORDE at riverside, they were very
boring. i think they do better in smaller venues. their sound just
doesn't carry to large audiences.

wnat. I am a big fan of DMB but I do not find this net interesting. I also right to the
Allmans net and that is better. People right stuff that is cool and they do not just babble and
right these messages that take about fifteen minutes to read. All of you guys do is babble.
Also, BHT is a great band and we all should be happy that DMB is touring with them, do not
complain,

Trey with DMB

l_leclai@hamlet.uncg.edu Fri Jan 27 13:29:32 1995

Hey all, just got back from the kick-off show for BHT&M and DMB (here in
Burlington) and was
it ever an amazing show. BHT were pretty good, but DMB stole the show
especially when they introduced a "local boy" and our hero emerged on
stage. He played very contained, which suprised me but I think it was so
he wouldn't steal their spotlight, since it was their first night. He
jammed with the violinist for the first part of Jimi Thing, and then went
_crazy_ with the sax player in a tramendous jam that went for about 5
mins. He was invited to stay out for the last couple of songs and did,
lending a good rhythem guitar, but again not stealing the spotlight with
he ability, letting the others do there thing. The other two
songs he played with them were Recently and Ants Marching.
I was impressed that he contained himself, albeit a little dissapointed,
but it was DMB's show, and I guess that's just one more way he helps out
the hometown music scene from which he got his start. If you're in the
area on Feb. 10, we can all see him again (along with Fishman) playing
Club Toast with Micheal Ray and the Kosmic Krew. See ya there!!

If you could keep me floating, just for a while...

RecentlyAnts marching. It was a sight to have been seen. The energy was
incredible. My friend Brian B got a chance to get backstage and talk with
the boys. Good scene he said, a bunch of great guys.
that show was a gem. Incredible. Siskel and Ebert gave that show two

Hello All--
I am looking for a show. The first time I ever saw/heard DMB was at
Hampden-Sydney's Homecoming in October '93. The date was probably around the
14th or 15th. I would really like to get a hold of my first dave experience.
If you have this show, and would like to set up a trade, e-mail me personally.
Thanks...tom

---------- Forwarded message ----------

TJ-
going to bring out a friend of ours now, a local boy..." and there he
was. I think they played recently first ...(or about half of recently
before it got a little directionless) and I distinctly remember them
doing Jimi Thing together and maybe ants. It was pretty cool, because
even though Trey made a few awkward chords looking for the tunes, he did
dueling banjos with Boyd and jammed with Leroi back and forth a bit.
Really cool stuff...The set list was something to the effect of..Seek up,
#36,Best of, Rhyme, People People(just kidding), Nancies, Recently, Jimi
thing, Ants, Encore- Tripping Billies. Abrief but sweet show...seek up
was killer. It's fairly hard to be objective because it was my first
show, but I've been collecting tapes for a few months, so I know them
pretty well. Seeing them again tonight at Dartmouth. If you weren't
down in VA, I'd tell you to come along...I got an extra...See you 2-14.
Peace-

P.S. If you feel like posting this for everyone else's benefit, feel
free, I just thought someone else might have better commentary.

a small place, like the fox theatre in boulder you would appreciate them a
lot more. todd rips! buy midnight radio, and i don't know, cry?

ps

i think that the story about texas, the little bro and friend situation is
totally relevant. it could have happened to you! don't be an ignorant

Steve Lillywhite-hands

GOTTLIEB@BU4090.BARRY.EDU Fri Jan 27 14:55:30 1995

Greetings,

I finally came to grips with the fact that DAVE isn't coming remotely
near South Florida. In fact, the only interesting person performing
is Bryan Ferry and he hasn't produced anything good since Bete Noire.

Anyway, just a reminder that the House of Blues shows air tonight
and tomorrow at about 12:05 TBS time. I hope it's not one of
those fixed camera things. Yawn city. I think it's Sheryl Crow
and Hootie...and speaking of Crow, there is a nasty picture of
her singing with Michael Jackson in Q magazine. Also in Q is
an interview with Steve Lillywhite, producer of UTTAD. No
America recently because the live scene is really strong there
at the moment. It's all encompassing. It's like the Deadhead
hippy thing, only with new bands. There's an infrastructure
of club gigs that allows bands to grow." He also says that the members of
DMB are "all great players."

Also, can anyone help with some Ed McCain Band shows?

I hope someone finds something of interest in this...Ugh, there are
Dorito stains all over this keyboard.

Do NOT go to a DMB/BHT show expecting to get a board feed.

Uh...huh, huh.

P.S. Todd Mohr (- SP?) of BHT is probably one of the best singer/guitar

who are confused as to whether you should like another band other than

Hey DMB people.........
I'm brand new to the net (thank, or blame, keith for setting me up....whatever)
and I just read the stupidest message that i've ever read on this thing........
......whoever it was today that said some shit about all members who post doing
nothing but babbling is fucking crazy........

I like this net because everyone is so friendly, so fuck people like whoever it
was that said that and just babble babble babble, nothing wrong with that....

And I would strongly suggest to this particular person and others like him to
get off the net rather than bitch about it.................

Sorry my first post had to be so bitchy, but i couldn't stand it.
