Three things for you, Neil.

1. If you think it sucks, please leave. No one needs that.
2. Do not tell anyone NOT to complain when that's all you did in your
eloquent letter.
3. It's 'write', not 'right'.

I am new to this DMB net and I think it sucks. You guys just right whatever the hell you

SOrry about my post. DMB is really good and I like them. If you went to
the Dartmouth show and saw a really sad tired boy, it was me. I waited
for someone for hours and hour and they never met up with me and my
ticket. I drove very far to go to the show too. Sorry about the
negativity. This post shouldn't be on. I know. Just wasting bandwidth
but maybe someone cares.

Leftover Salmon .. no dmb content.

chobbs@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Sat Jan 28 08:32:48 1995

for those of you interested
i jsut got in from last night LOS show in winston salem ... they rocked
their "polyethnic cajun slamgrass" makes your feet stomp and your
booties boogie and its only now at like 8:00 the next morning that i am
coming off my crazy great music adreniline high ..
this band has a quirky talent of tunring rock like "paint it blacK" or
"blister in the sun" into nutty bluegrass (umm make that bluegrass with
a carribean/cajun/funk twist) ... plus they spice up "bill
monroe" type bluegrass .. irish jigs and manipulate grateful dead tunes
and even gospel .. if you can believe it or not "gossple" heeh (gona
rise up .... and wake and bake" into room bounicn dancin tunes.
check em out!

Sorry BHT fans (myself included), but DMB blew them away!!! Good thing BHT

Great show, unfortunately both bands only played for about 75 min.
Ugly Americans???? Have no idea how they played. I hate to bitch, but what
purpose does a 3rd band serve, except for taking away from the amount of
time the other 2 bands play??

I'm a business major, was that funny?) Anyway, I really want to go, so I

olga@email.unc.edu Sat Jan 28 14:18:42 1995

Just a little aside, the first dmb show i went to was here in chapel
thrill, at the "world reknown" cats cradle. The show was packed, and the
music seemed to last forever. After the show, I managed to get to the
dressing room (which I have found, is easier for those of the cute blonde
chick persuasion than of the XY types), and I talked with the band until
about 3 or 4 am. Dave and I bonded over the fact that we had both been
beaten by nuns when we went to catholic school. I think carter may have
fallen under the sister's ruler, but I'm not sure. The beers were
flowing, and my mind was reeling by the end.

Dartmouth 1/27, taping policy, ...

no encore total show was 1:20

anyway, i had the opportunity to talk with some of the guys and get some shady
answers on the taping policy. the policy at dartmouth was no taping at all, so
i had to sneak my deck in hoping for a patch. earlier in the day i talked to
dave (who seemed a bit hungover from his night at trey's house...he said that
he and leroi got drunk and started staggering around to imitate just how drunk
they got) anyway, he said that as of jan. 1 they stopped giving out soundboard
patches because it was just getting too big and too much of a hassle for
jeff...he said it had nothing to do with rca and that he wanted to just somehow
encourage tapers to help them out and bring their mics...however he said that
occasionally jeff would still give out patches...he mentioned that he wanted to
get on the "minarets net" to spread the word...

anyway, after bht+m (who played an aweful set), fenton came out and i asked if
i could get a patch...he said that i'd have to talk to jeff but that because of
RCA they were no longer allowed to...he said that mics were cool and i
explained that i wasn't allowed in with them...he was eager to help out, and
gave me his all access patch to get the mics in and let me set up on the
lighting riser...tape came out as well as one would expect from such a shitty
room...after the show, i talked to jeff and he gave a third reason why the
privalege is no longer...he said dthat it had nothing to do with hassle or the
record company, but that it was big head todd's paranoia...he said that he was
still taping personally and that those tapes would occationally be
released...he said that the burlington show is already out...anybody got it?
whatever the reason, it sucks that we can't plug out anymore...this is a band
that just doesn't come off as well on an audience tape...at least it seems
possible that the gift will come back in the future...

oh yeah, one of the funniest boyd momments took place last night...right when
he dug into his solo in jimi thing (great version), he leaned back and fell on
his ass knocking over some of his equipment on the way down...he continued to
play on his back while dave laughed and pointed at him...

fenton said that new stuff was in the works and was being worked out in
soundchecks...
never seen so many people crowd surf in my life...

well, i've said enough to last a few months, talk to y'all later...

anyone know the date of the prism coffeehouse wtju dave solo show where he's
talking about upcoming dates, and thurs or fri he's playing a frat house,

seeing as the v-day show will attract the four winds, perchance it might be a

stood there...until both albums were done playing...compromises, compromises...

Africa

gt0082c@prism.gatech.edu Sat Jan 28 20:45:36 1995

Hi everybody,

Africa. Now what you have to understand is I grew up in Lesotho, which is
totally surrounded by SA. I met the band that played with Paul Simon on
Graceland. They are from Southern Africa. I like you guys a whole lot
and tonight I was just getting all sentimental about Africa. I guess I'm
a putz. So to everyone : Hotso Undatea that would be Peace my friends.

scary dmb stuff

BYVR25A@prodigy.com Sun Jan 29 00:45:39 1995

I know this sounds kinda scary, but it really seems like dmb is well on
the way toward commercialization. looking at the set lists from the last
two nights[I did not go to them of course], I thought I was looking at the
same lists. this is bothersome. and a 1 hour 20 minute show for both bhtm
and dave? that is disappointing. i'm sure they ripped for the time they
played, but howmany people really appreciated it?
all i'm sayin is if I see one fuckin' crowd surfer i'm gonna throw my
scrawny little fists in their faces[na, i'll just be really pissed].
scared as hell that our favorite bands [dmb especially] might be climbing
out of our reach.
played in between shit like green day and offspring i'm gonna puke.

Hootie & Snapped strings

philos@ritz.mordor.com Sun Jan 29 00:56:59 1995

Anybody else out there in Minarets-land notice that during "Hannah Jane" on
House of Blues [Unfortunately sponsored by Pontiac] had a serious case of
loose strings. During the middle, he turned around for about five seconds
to tighten it. =20

thinking of adding it to my wardrobe, but I've only seen it in the Bama Rags
Merchandise catalog. I'm a newbie in that respect. Speaking of newbies,
anybody out there feel like helping out a newbie get his DMB collection
started. All I've got is some HQ Phish to trade, but if anybody is into
dubbing for the halibut, let me know, cuz I'd be happy to receive some
bagbies (bagbys?)
=93Can one be a saint without God? =97 that=92s the problem,
in fact, the only problem I=92m up against today.=94

Re: scary dmb stuff

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Sun Jan 29 01:33:03 1995

Hey, just noticed that you mentioned DMB being played among Green
Day.... It's kinda the same thing. If you really like the band, you'll
like 'em no matter what happens (although you'll long for the good ole
days). But back to my point...way back in Jan '93 when Dave Matthews
played at Zollman's pavilion on th 30th, guess who played the Thursday
night before (for all of $600 I might add)-- Yep, the boys o' Green!
W&L...whadda place! How random is that? Way back then, my boyfriend was
trying to get us to like Green Day. "Green who???" So, he and his best
friend got 'em to come, payed 'em $600 and let them sleep on the floor of
their house. Shit, I even ate Stop In nachos with Billie Joe (heh
heh...yes, Boofy, we shared a cheese product)! So, it happens to the
best of 'em is all I got to say. I think that when people stop liking a
band because they think the band is "selling out" it's actually the
people selling out the band. This is the way they make a living. Even
with all the hype about Green Day selling out the punks, the band still
owes their success (what you will) to them (Go read Rolling Stone with
them on he cover).

AND before someone flames me for comparing GD and DMB, I'm NOT!!! I
happen to like them both, but I also like Mozart, so deal. And to those
people who thought DMB and BHT "shouldn't" be on the bill together
because they aren't "alike" enough, then why are you going to see Dave
and the Symphony play???
Go figure.
I gotta paper to write. Later all

Review of Bates 1/28

dbb@christa.unh.edu Sun Jan 29 13:13:10 1995

had seen him was at the Avalon, in Boston. We got to the venue an hour
and a half from my school, UNH. We saw the venue was only 1,500 people,
for some reason I was expecting a larger place.
believe the things that were going on there. There were guys chasing each
each other yelling, "I'm gonna get you, you fuckin' pussy". I saw at
least ten couples making out, and three people vomitting in the back of
the room. There was no smoking in the venue, either. This chaffed me hard.
worst band I have ever seen in my life. They sounded like Counting Crows
meets NKOTB. They were awful. They played for longer than DMB did.
love them. They definitely sold out. They only played their singles.
psyched. They played about eight kickin songs and then left the stage
without an encore. I was definitely disappointed. But, I think they
were too. No one was dancing, they were just yelling and chasing each
other. Dave actually commented on that at one point. He said thanks for
dancing in the back. (that was my group of friends) The acoustics of
the room were the worst I have heard at any show anywhere. It was
basically a gymnasium... it was awful.
played two songs after that that I had never heard before.
did not like the music, they were simply there for the "social scene".
They acted like high school students and had no respect for anyone elses
enjoyment of the show. If one were to stand in the middle of an open
space, someone would go out of their way to shove you, instead of going
around. I feel incredibly sorry for any intelligent people who go to
Bates, because the concert was void of intelligent life forms. To ad to
this the setup was not very professional.
disappointing concerts I have ever been to.

I fell like I should leave a little quote, because everyone else does it-

jazzbo@eliza.netaxis.com Sun Jan 29 16:13:29 1995

The traffic on this list has gotten to the point where it should become a
newsgroup. I mean, we're getting more than 1 digest per day... that's gone
far beyond the realms of a mailing list when a newsgroup is accessable. I
guess we could leave the mailing list for those who haven't got usenet
access, but a newsgroup is the way to go, IM(ns)HO. Anyone else agree with
me?

To Digestify, send exactly and only the message, "set minarets mail digest"

blame, but look, I condensed my sig, and you can too! notice that i took out
an entire line! anyway, ...

this last semester... i don't have access and many people who contribute
regularly either don't have access or know how to use them if they did...also,
minarets has become a really friendly place and I feel like I can trust most
if not all of the people here. I hate to make us a clique, but if we opened
up the pandora's box of newsgroupdom, then we will bring in many more people
than we can handle... Take a look at Phishnet which I was briefly on last
semester, I got three HUGE digests a day, we get more than one b/c the
settings are set so that we don't have to worry about getting HUGE messages
when digested... also we will get a lot more flames, a lot more junk like
chain mail, and likely a lot more trouble than we bargained for...I think we
have all come to a concensus that the newsgroups are a bad idea for the moment
for minarets. if the growth continues, we might consider it, but it's not for
us now...hope I haven't offended and that we can all still be friends ;) I
love Two Step...Heck, i love Daveband....

tickets? and info?

Scott.C.Reeder@dartvax.dartmouth.edu Sun Jan 29 23:22:32 1995

hey everyone,
i am new to the list
DMB is one of my favorite bands (along with counting crows, phish, peter
gabriel) I have seen them live twice. (Dec 30 - AU, and this past friday in
Hanover) They were amazing both times and i cant wait to see them again.... and
that brings me to my first question... can anyone tell me if tickets are still

2/3 Hartford
2/4 Boston
2/7 Northhampton
2/21 Manchester

And also on friday The Ugly Americans opened for Dave/Big Head Todd, they were
ok, does anyone know anything about the band? Where are they from? Are they
opening for the entire tour? I met the lead singer, Bob, briefly after the
show, and although he looks sort of cheesy from a distance, he was very cool
and seemed pretty down to Earth.... any info on these guys appreciated...

time from where I live, only to realize that March 18 is during my spring

but it is one week of fun and a considerable amount of money for me
versus (only) one night of the best band playing today. Maybe I can
compromise and fly back a couple of days early. But (very strangely) my
friends are not as big as DMB fans as I, and I don't think they will want
to. So can someone talk me into going, and maybe someone meet me there
in Minneapolis? Or perhaps inform me that I am mistaken, and that DMB is
actually playing there on the 20th, or something?

Yup... i just thought i'd throw in my agreement on this...newsgroups as an
entity aren't all that bad, in fact, they can be pretty funny
(alt.tv.simpsons!!! alt.tv.simpsons.ichy&scratchy! heh heh), but they do
tend to add tons of traffic to the net that just wouldn't help out our

yes. no encore. :(

talked to Dave after the show and he seemed satisfied with it. the
whole band looked well-rested and happy. of course, Carter's ALWAYS
smiling...

they had a semi-large light show.

it took me aback. there were suddenly symbols foating around in back
of the band... a circle... a window... a triangle... Ben thinks he saw a
weed leaf...

i liked the lights in general... but maybe they need a little more timing...

Bates College. the place was called Grey Cage. fits... it was high
school, with older people and more beer. but at least the crowd riding
was minimal during DMB's set...

i contacted an audience taper after the show. i don't know if i want to
HEAR that audience again, though.

well, that's it, until the Tower show. i think just about everyone in
the Greater Philadelphia Area is going to be at the Tower Theatre...

All Things Considered

@Xenon.Stanford.EDU:malachi@leland.stanford.edu Mon Jan 30 06:18:09 1995

Hey all,
I'm just gonna ramble on, sing my song (mainly about relevant stuff, but
I'll probably digress as I begin to fall asleep). Feel free to hit DELETE
right now, Goddess knows I have.

first, if i owe you anything at all, please write me immediately with
something along the lines of "asshole" in the subject. my life has lost
all semblance of organization (it's kinda nice), but it was terrible when i
got several tapes in the mail that i have no idea what to send in return,
much less who they're from.

i just finished reading every single message posted between 12/14 and 1/30,
and it was some ungodly number, so i have lots of things to say. everyone
give a little telepathic thanks to CHA for all of his amusing yet helpful
posts which lighten up our sometimes tedious network; i'm sure everyone has
appreciated at least one.

i'd like to apologize to all those who went to the non-existent stage in
piedmont park in atlanta on 12/27, i thought it was up year round. but in
fact, i'm also sorry that i didn't even go, i had a bad bacterial
infection. if i can get the tape of the show, you'll be the first to know.

is there some easy way to meet bands after the show? lots of people have
been talking about it; is there some secret to it? if anyone knows how i
might meet rusted root after the show on sat (where i've got a feeling i'll
be the only one who's heard of them), i'd be much obliged for the info.

i did, however, make it to the b'ham show with a 101.5 fever which made it
a lot easier to ignore the largest mob of ant-like, inconsiderate people
i've ever seen. no offense to anyone, but i thought from good homes was
terrible. anyway, all the little annoyances (like the terrible venue)
disappeared the moment the dmb stepped on stage and put on a wonderful
show.
heard before, cause i went crazy immediately, dancin' like mad. i heard
someone behind me ask "how can he dance to this?" and i noticed that
everyone else looked like they were waiting for the band to start the first
song.
usual and very cool intro to OSW).
graves (my favorite song that they hadn't ever played at any of my
concerts) and a great two step. it was actually kind of nice, cause i had
lots of room to dance when everybody else was just standin' around.
the lights go down and the only ones who exist in the world are you, dave,
boyd, leroi, stefan, and carter, and any damaba show will be great.

and can afford to do so, move to santa cruz, california, where they smoke
more, uh, cigarettes, yeah, than anywhere else. i saw dave there in dec.
for 5 bux, i'm seeing rusted root there sat. for 2 bux, zoo people there
next weekend for about the same, and they have beach concerts for free
every weekend of the summer.

is anyone else out there scared of technology? i think i am, so i decided
not to be a computer science major. maybe i'll look into a music major,
hmmmm...

i guess i got a little lonely out here in rainy (yup!) california when i
read the 2000-odd messages from you all, and you got to meet each other at
shows, cause i've only seen one of you in person. nonetheless, you gain
some insight when you read so much of this stuff at one time, so know this
-- there are a LOT of good people on this net, a lot higher percentage than
there is in what some would like to call the real world. how much of this
is dave's dastardly doing?

does anybody have a tape with exodus or redemption song to trade?

also, if you like symphonic music, check out the soundtracks to any of tim
burton's movies (i like the edward scissorhands' st the best, but the

DMB Radio Promo CD's

bullard@coral.bucknell.edu Mon Jan 30 13:47:27 1995

I just received in the mail two cd's that are radio station promo disks
that RCA put out to promote the new singles off UTTAD. The first one has
only What Would You Say, and it runs 3:42 the same as the album cut. The
other disk has an edited version of Jimi Thing that is 4:53 long, All
Along the Watchtower from Recently, Christmas Song from R2T and the LP
version of Jimi Thing (5:57). Pretty intersting disk, although the first
one is not really worth what I paid for it, since it only had one song.
If anyone is interested in getting these I have the address where I
ordered, and they only took about 2 weeks to get back.

Bagby's word on patches

jcmuniz@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Mon Jan 30 14:02:11 1995

I talked to Jeff Bagby at Burlington about the patches. He said that they
were not giving them out "this tour" because of the hassle involved with
the other bands. I asked him if they would be back afterwards, and he just
said maybe.

If any of you were also taping in Burlington, please get in touch with me. I'm
hearing a bit of boomy distortion on my tape (my levels are OK) and I'm wondering
if it was coming from the mikes that we all patched out of.

one small dilemna

l_leclai@hamlet.uncg.edu Mon Jan 30 15:44:59 1995

This is the kind of Monday I like to see. All my appointments cancelled
because of a little snow, so I don't have anywhere to go until class at
4. Got to spend the whole day kickin back and taping and cooking.

But, I was listening to WQFS, and they announce that Ani DiFranco is
playing at Guilford College on Wednesday. Now, I was gonna See Edwin
Mccain that day out in Winston, but now I don't know what to do...
Drive 1/2 hour to Edwin, or See Ani in my backyard....
I've never seen either of these shows before...anyone want to help me
decide?? Might depend on the weather of course, but I need some direction...

Oh, and who mentioned a possible DMB show at Duke?? Keep us posted!!

no newsgroup

eje3u@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Mon Jan 30 15:52:59 1995

Check out phish.net and then tell us you'd like a newsgroup. With a list,
the group is confined to those interested enough to have a shitload of posts
in their box every day, but with a group, anyone can stop in, grovel (not
that all grovels are bad), drop flamebait, and generally destroy any sense of
cohesiveness and freindship. There are people here that are closer to
phish.net but I get the impression that all the knowlegeable regulars have
run off to somewhere else.

Of course RCA may be setting up a Prodigy site as we speak. :)

stupid and ignorant of the purpose of this multiple recipients of list

setlists, grovels, newbie offers, trade requests, and news... If you want
something that dry, create your own newsletter. You won't be able to keep it

hate to read "tons" of mail, which aren't that bad if you're digestified, can
leave and form their own little clique, which would be bad... I vote for

shouldn't take long to type up (just the dates, obviously), and then
we'll know what you might or might not need. Just a thought.

solution to cliques, newsgroups, etc...

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Jan 30 22:08:31 1995

Well, ok, lesse if i get this computer stuff right...As far as i know,
newsgroup stuff sits around for a long time, which is convienent if you
wanna look up old posts, but always confuses me by not figuring out what
i have read (which i now think i have figured out). anyway....lets start
a newsgroup devoted to dates and info people keep asking about. Basically
we post the FAQ, chords, current dates and real relevant stuff...like
setlists, etc.....all the peopl that are on this just for that can read
it. All of us who are on here to talk about other stuff also and meet
poeple and generally just have fun with it can stay here. Of course the
WWW page is basiclly this, but not everyone is computer literate and
knows what a URL is and how to use it....anyway....

just my two random pennies....

news groups and possible show

MEDICUS@UNIVSCVM.CSD.SCAROLINA.EDU Tue Jan 31 00:06:58 1995

NO Way to News group status. I was just checking these things out to see what
they were about, and it seemed more pain than I was willingto endure. I read
about five messages from one group about seinfeld (great show) and 2 of
the messages dealt with something that had nothing to do with the subject at
hand. We get enough mail as it is, and it most of it deals with interesting
material so lets just leave good enough alone.
possibilites for a free, yes that's right folks a free Concert to be held
here at the University of South Carolina. I think the vote goes in tomorrow,
so I will let everyone know the good news in a phew days. Have a good one.

newsgroup, huh???

1. i know i am going to sound like a rookie, but can someone please tell me
what the hell
this newsgroup is all about,i would like some details on advantages ,
disadvantages
and procedures. iknow i cant be the only one that is not familiar with
this.........

2. i'd like to express my opinion on this crowd surfing shit. actually,
being lifted up and passed around seems like alot of fun,but only in a
controlled situation. putting my life
( a little extreme ) in the hands of a bunch of drunks ( and tee-totalers)
seems like a stupid idea. usually fans at dave's shows can be divided up
the thing to do
usually at a show, i'm a little preoccupied and dont feel like passing
folks overhead.
i have also noticed that dave doesn't care for the crowd surfing shit
either. a good example is new years 94-95, the surfing began during jimi
thing and dave was obviously
rattled and annoyed. it definetly hampered his energy and concentration and
the rest of the show was mediocre at best.( i believe someone got a foot in
the face) ....i'm not sure how to put an end to this, but you might try
when the surfer came my way, i yanked her down (safely) and proceeded to
lecture her
(or enlighten) on the sillyness of the whole surf thing. i say have a good
time at the show as long as you dont keep me from having a good time.....
to clean up our acts
have a good time,

aye aye .. read what boofy posted earlier about solutions ... put
pertinent cut and dry stuff somewhere where anyone can access it ...like
a newsgroup (ugh i mean anyone connected to the internet) hmmm the
only problem would be that it would get corrupted with stupid stuff like
"dmb can lick me ..my boyfriend ditched me after the show"
but something neutral like that .. i second sir bufords thoughts ...
or can we just teach people who bitch about babble on here how to http
and ftp and what a url is (hey boof ... what is a url?) since all
that pertinent stuff is already located somewhere at netspace.org

sit back and relax .. tickle someone .. the laughter is good for your soul
