Greetings and Gummi Worms

pauly@li.net Tue Jan 31 02:33:28 1995

comes to DMB. So new, that I'm afraid I'm hhaving trouble figuring out
WHY I like thhe band so much. Their music is so unique to me. I have yet
to see or hear them live, which I guess leads me to this not so clever
segue....
The 2/24 show at the Roseland ballroom is sold out. If anyone has extra
tickets, could someone please contact me?
My timing with VH-1 is pretty bad. All I seem to catch is either Tom
Petty or REM. Can u say OVER-PLAYED?
Well, that's all you'll get for now outta me,

I must break my silence. To the Deininger buffoon, ye know not of what
ye speak, inbred buggerer of dead horses. The first concert I ever
attended, bumbling oaf, was the Dave Matthew's Band in St. Louis, MO, a
6 hour trip from Lexington, KY, which is where I go to school. Here at
Transylvania, I have learned grammar, which has obviously escaped your
simian mind. Your brain is obviously composed of something other than
functioning neurons. The diarrheal excrement of rabid turkeys, perhaps?
But this is of no import; I digress. The fans present at said concert
exhibited respectful behavior towards an excellent performer and perfor-
mance. I could understand your criticism were it based on actual know-
ledge of the DMB. However, listening to ABBA and masturbating while
reading Swank magazine and swilling Beast does not make you an expert.
You must also learn to see out of your anus, as this seems to be where
your head spends most of its time, or so it would seem when one reads
your "letters". As one of the assholes who disagrees with you, I would
suggest cleaning the shit from your ears the next time you listen to
or see the DMB. Yes, that's right. Remove your hand from your pants,
your finger from your nose, and the diseased goat sperm from what you
attempt to pass off as a brain. I must apologize for the ad hominem
retorts and immature epithets, but, as they say, fight fire with fire,
eh, little chum?

Hootie & snapped strings & BHT

 1. i know i am going to sound like a rookie, but can someone please
tell me what the hell
this newsgroup is all about,i would like some details on advantages ,
 disadvantages

Well, a newsgroup is a form of posting things than can be browsed through
but not necisarrily subscribed to.... alas...as far as i know Prodigy,
CopuServe and AOL do not offer newsgroup access yet...i know prodigy (i
think) just released a WWW browser to its customers, openbing up th
eworld of homepages and hypertext links....anyway....its kinda hard to
explain...

either. a good example is new years 94-95, the surfing began during jimi
 thing and dave was obviously
before which was much worse.....i also didnt notice anybody surfing....
maybe i was really spaced....

oh yeah Universal REsource Locater=URL

help, i need somebody, HELP, not just anybody....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Jan 31 11:03:21 1995

14 days left everyone. i can almost taste it.

but just so everyone knows, dave matthews is not pioneering this
contemporary-music-with-the-richmond-symphony type thing.
last week some random, cheezy country band had their moment in
the spotlight. the richmond times disgrace didn't have very
kind words for it, either. i highly suspect that valentine's
day will be..........well.................indescribable?

BUT.....

i'm a bit screwed. i can get to the show if i want, but i'd
rather get to richmond a bit early so i can make it to this
ever so publicized net gathering that's actually partially my
own creation.

sooooooooooooooo.......

if anyone is going from harrisonburg or passing through harrisonburg
on their way to the net gathering at 3rd st diner on february 14th,
might you be so kind as to give me a ride? i can provide gas money,
me out, please, then, help me out. i'm free at 3:00 on tuesday's,
but if need be i can skip anthropology (though, honestly, that would
be a bad thing, as i have to skip it the thursday following the
show, so if you can leave h-burg at 3:00, that would be better...)

i don't need a ride home. just a ride to the gathering.

so send me a note if you can help me out.........

every three months or so someone asks if we should set up a newsgroup
and every three months or so we shoot it down, and rightfully so.

newsgroups are just an inherently bad idea, and are simply for people
who have entirely too much time on their hands, which i for one, don't.

newsgroups allow any person, even a person who has never heard of the
dave matthews band, to come on and say things that are really annoying.
basically, it's a first class way to _GUARANTEE_ that minarets.net
becomes a very hateful, annoying, fire infested hell-hole.

just my somewhat outspoken thoughts on the subject.....

Lupo's!

flats@WPI.EDU Tue Jan 31 11:17:35 1995

Hey all,
The order is more than likely pretty slopy.

Started around 11:30 ended a little after one, hence no encore.
Boyd really let loose on Tripping Billies and Say Goodbye had the sweetest
flute solo before the first verse. High energy levels throughout the whole
show. Some crowd surfing (too distracting). Near the end of the set the
crowd started to thin out during the songs that weren't on albums and left
more room to dance.

well....maybe i _do_ have too much time on my hands....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Jan 31 11:29:17 1995

i have a bad habit of reading liner notes cover to cover, particularly
acknowledgements and all the pointless stuff at the end. (if you ever
get the chance, find a copy of fighting gravity's boy o boy o boy o
boy o boy and read the cd itself. pretty funny stuff there....)

anyway, when i tackled the liner notes of under the table and dreaming
one night this weekend (yes, i have _no_ life), i discovered something
mighty perplexing......

dave matthews plays vocals (of all things to play) and _left_ acoustic
guitar. now, take my word, if you don't already know, dave matthews
is _not_ left handed, nor does he play his guitar in any way shape or
form that could be construed as left handed. in fact, aside from an
overwhelming propensity to use his pinky in ways most rhythm guitarist
can't imagine, he's pretty much just a rhythm guitarist.

so, the next most logical thing to assume is that someone involved in
the production of uttad is pretty goofy. the next most illogical thing
to assume is that person is none other than steve lillywhite.

i checked, and sure enough, the guitars coming from the left and right
speakers are distinctly different. try playing with the balance during
the wwys jam, just after all the yelling and pretentious blues traveler-ish
yelling and carrying on, and you'll really see that it's two completely
different guitar lines. i'd have to say i'm a bit surprised that it
took anyone, including myself, this long to notice this, but i'd also
have to say that it's a bit of creative genius on lillywhite's part.

any thoughts on this subject? any thougts on any other subject?
any thoughts......

news to me....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Jan 31 12:31:38 1995

I heard that the Feb. 14 DMB concert with the Richmond Symphony is going to be
made into a cd. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this rumor?

to my knowledge, no one on this net can verify this, but to me it
seems pretty logical. it would make for perfect timing for another
cd from the band if they released it towards the end of the summer,
perhaps mid september. i realize that is 7 months to commit the
show to cd, but it's probably how long it will take to get the legal
hassles of the symphony members contracts and all.

BUT THIS IS HIGHLY SPECULATORY (sp?)!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm am by no means any sort of a authority on this subject. but
this is going to be one of the most highly prized shows of all
dave matthews time and the symphony is strictly forbidding all
taping, so they are the only ones who have the rights to it (and
also are in line to make a pretty penny off of it, so let's hope
the symphony sells out...:)

but ...how would we know?
Sorry if I annoyed everyone...about that ride...

DMB in "USA Today"

Howdy Howdy,

"Life" section of USA Today (on Jan.17 I think) and right on the
front page of the section there was an article on big spring tours.
One of the sentences said something to the effect that "The Dave
Matthews Band with Big Head Todd (erasing any doubts of who is
headlining) is touring the east coast and that shows are selling out
incredibly quickly." I think the order of the article was that it
talked about Pearl Jam, Lollapalooza w/Neal Young, DMB, then
everyone else.

Well, i noticed this as soon as i got the cd, cu z im cool... no really.
I did read that and figured dave was panned left most of the time. Its
really obvious that there are two guitars in alot of stuff, especially
the beginning of WWYS, at first i just though dave would do 2 tracks
becaus esometime its the same riff.
of stuff of the 2 studio tracks and some ven on the live tracks on R2T.
There is guitar that pans from left to right in Seek Up, i noticed in one
sweet that alot of ryhtm guitar was mainly right, every now and then
adding the left to make it fuller.

carter in pay for cuz all the drums are one channel, all the guitar the

positive (+) (usually red) wires from each channel and plug them into the

that I already posted this news, well, it's the middle of the afternoon and "I

post. Ok, i give up, I'm old, and the wolves are after me. Aoooooooohhhhh!!!!
Emily, it was wonderful meeting you, sorry we didn't have more time to talk.
I'm a much better conversationist before consuming mass quantities of beer.

browsing the Murpleweb. For those of you who missed ARU this weekend,
pppppphhhhtttttttt!!!!!!! It was a GREAT show and I, in all likelyhood, will be
getting a copy. I think it will be sans TR3 though. I really have something
important to say, I really do, but I just can't think of it, so I'll babble

the Lake Matoaka and PBC shows. I'm wearing my Lake Matoaka Music fest. shirt

"left" guitar on UTTAD

Rick mentioned that in the liner notes, dave is credited as the left
acoustic guitar. now, i'm sitting in the library and don't have the cd
in front of me to check but doesn't tim play guitar on most of
the songs on UTTAD? I guess that would make him the "right" acoustic
guitar, which would make sense considering that is where the rhythm
guitar is usually coming from.

television broadcasted concerts, and I don't think that it's a
coincidence that everybody has that problem. There is also no way that
Hootie could have turned around in the middle of a song and tightened his
strings, then continued to play the song in tune. Anyways, maybe I'm
wrong, but who cares.

To all,
I was just wondering if anyone had any Dave bootlegs with From
Good Homes opening, or any bootlegs of them alone (willing to trade)
. I saw them open for Dave in Boston at the Avalon show last fall
and thought they were great. Caught them again, by themselves
(& the Sparta H.S. choir) at their Christmas show in Morristown, NJ.
I have their album, but at the Christmas show they sang many songs
that I didn't know but the crowd seemed to. If anyone can help me
out it would be greatly appreciated. Also, just wanted to say that
not everyone at Boston College is like that clown who can't

ftp files

acox@oregano.mwc.edu Tue Jan 31 14:33:08 1995

I figured that since there was so much talk about forming a newsgroup,
besides the fact that everyday people are asking to be sent some file, it
would not be unwelcome if I posted how to access the ftp site. If you
already know how to do so, just press D now, but if not, this hopefully
will be a help. I only learned how to do this over Christmas, so I'm
rather new at this and don't know all the shortcuts, but I have a good
enough idea to write instructions...

To access the DMB ftp (file transfer protocol) site you must be able to
get connected to the remote site (a system other than your own). I know
how to do this two ways.

The first is using UNIX. UNIX is just a program that many computers
operate on (that's the extent of my UNIX knowledge). Many times when you
login, it tells you that you are using UNIX, or you have the option to
choose to use UNIX. Anyway, you need to find the UNIX prompt, a dollar
sign ( $ ). It may just be a dollar sign, or it may have your system's
identification before it. If you find a dollar sign with the cursor next
to it, you can be fairly sure that it is the UNIX prompt.

Once you find the prompt, $, you type ftp netspace.org it will look

$ ftp netspace.org

You will then be told whether or not you've been connected. If you have,
you will be asked for your name, at which time you type either 'ftp' or
'anonymous' - I think that both work. Next you will be asked for your
password. You should use your own email address as a password (you could
type anything, but it is common courtesy to type your own address so that
the remote site can keep track of who is on their system).

If all goes well there, another prompt should come up, it would look like
this ftp at which time, you have choices. If you want to go through
each directory and see what your options are, you can type cp pub
The command 'cd' stands for 'change directory' and will take you to the

ftp cd pub

You will then be told if your command is successful. At any time, you can
view what is in each directory by typing dir which, surprisingly
enough, is short for directory. For new users, everytime you change
directories it is probably a good idea to see what your options are in
each directory, so after the cd pub command, type dir (ftp dir)
and press enter. You will then see a list of bands, including Phish, God
cd cdStreet Wine, Widespread, etc. (see for yourself).

To get at the DMB site, type cd DMB at the ftp prompt. You can
then find what is in that directory, for example, the text-files, which
include the FAQ, chords file, etc. So at the ftp prompt, type

ftp text-files

You can see what is in that directory with dir
From here, since, for example, chords.txt is not a directory, but a
file, you need to download it to your local site (your computer). You do
this by typing get filename and it will be downloaded. When you get

ftp get chords.txt

It will say that the command is succesful, and it took a certain amount
of time - some larger files take more time, several minutes for some.

I said that when you got the ftp prompt you have several options.
Another is if you know you want the chords file, you could type at the
prompt cd pub/DMB/text-files which would take you to the text files
directory - you view this with the dir command, and you can type

Once you have gotten the files you want, to get out you type bye at
the ftp prompt, which will return you to the UNIX prompt. To see the
files that you have downloaded, type ls (list) at the UNIX prompt.
You should see the files that you have downloaded.

$ ls

To view a document, type more filename and use the spacebar and/or
enter to make your way through the document. To leave type 'q' and you
will be taken back to the UNIX prompt. A command to view a document would

$ more chords.txt

You must type everything as it appears, in lower case letters, etc.

These files do take up space on your memory, so to remove a file, use the
command rm filename and make sure it has been removed by listing the
files in your directory.

To get the graphics, which are incredible, the best way is through
Mosaic. I don't think it is possible through UNIX (though it may be if
you have the proper software). When you get into Mosaic, open the URL (I
believe that clicking on the word 'file' in the upper left corner of your
screen will give you this option).

You will then be asked to give the address, and then you type
for the graphics, though you can also access the other files this way.
You then simply click on the graphics you want, and they should
eventually come up on the screen (downloading such huge files as graphics
takes time). Once you open the URL you can also access using http, but I
don't know the differences, so I won't touch on that.

I hope I have not forgotten anything, the best thing to do, of course, is
talk to people "in the know" at your school or work, etc. If you are at a
school ask someone from the computer science department, they will tell
you all you need to know.

I forgot to mention that it is also common courtesy to do all this
ftp'ing at non-business hours. Downloading, etc. takes up space or
something, but they recommend/ask that you don't do it.

If you have any questions or if I forgot to explain something, don't
hesitate to write me and I'll try to help you find what you want. Sorry
to take up so much room...

Andrew

Hear Hear! I concur! If anybody doesn't believe the wisdom this
man imparts via the internet, please take a few moments and check
out rec.music.phish, rec.music.rem, or rec.music.gdead. Man, I
adore all 3 of those groups and depend mightily upon those
newsgroups for free advance info and trades/grovels, etc., but
there are some real JERKS out there who have nothing better to
do with themselves than screw around with them, and then silly
flamewars erupt, and you have to find yourself thanking God
daily that you have a newsreader with a KILL file or else you
could never wade through some of the crap that gets posted
there. I do NOT want this to happen to minarets. IF people
want to find us and get on the bus, it's extremely easy to
find, especially with WWW. Just say NO to a newsgroup.

just my somewhat outspoken thoughts on the subject.....

Just adding a couple more.

OK. The first 8 nebies with NO DMB tapes to respond to me will get a
different show or shows (depending on length of show; 2 tapes) for blanks
and postage. Once I find out all the people involved I will send each of
you (in the newbie offer) the names and e-mail addresses of each other.
This way you can then trade between yourselves. The only thing I ask is
that if you are interested in this offer you be willing to trade with

Re: Hootie & snapped strings & BHT

lono@brahms.udel.edu Tue Jan 31 15:01:38 1995

Anybody else out there in Minarets-land notice that during "Hannah Jane" on
House of Blues [Unfortunately sponsored by Pontiac] had a serious case of
loose strings. During the middle, he turned around for about five seconds
 to tighten it. =20

I saw H&BF about 3 months ago when they were touring with BHT and in
their ~ 1 hour set Hootie had a new guitar brought to him in the middle of
about 5-6 different songs. I assumed this was because of broken or badly
out of tune strings. I understand broken strings occur frequently, as the
guitarist in my bad breaks strings all the time, but to this extreme in
playing that was not too intense really had me wonderin'. Has anyone else
 noticed this.

And then when BHT came on, Todd had the same thing during 4-5 songs,
although he was playing much more intensely.
 Just wonderin'
 Phil

I play a little geetahr, and from my experience, snapped strings are MORE
likely to occur with extra light (small diameter) strings. Many musicians
use them because they break through other instruments tonally, esp. with
acoustic guitar. Unfortunately, what you makje up in sound is lost in
durability and integrity. They're harder to keep in tune, and they brreak
pretty easily...

just a theory...clink,clink(my $0.02)

RE: well....maybe i _do_ have too much time on my hands....

nebulous@panix.com Tue Jan 31 15:03:19 1995

scott miller says...

In an article in the Richmond Times Dispatch, Dave said that on the UTTD
album, Tim Reynolds plays the exact same thing Dave does on every single
song, plus some fills. So basically Tim is overlayed onto every song. It
sounds cool, gives it a full sound, or so I think?

it's a good idea, but it's sort of pointless... on one hand it's cool
because dave put an old friend on the (_entire_) album, but it's also a
waste of tim's considerable talent to play the same thing as dave. i'm
sure tim could have done some fucked up shit without being too jazzy or
overplaying... for instance, the beginning of warehouse, what i assume is
tim (i haven't checked which speaker it comes out of) does that neat drone
over the basic warehouse lick... stuff like that is cool, and makes buying
a CD of a live band worth it. he also could have been spotlighted on #34
without hurting anything......oh that would have been diviiiiiine...

spin the turnstyle and watch me go round...

Fort wayne show info

ddevito@ovid.helios.nd.edu Tue Jan 31 15:55:41 1995

Hey kids,

I may be shooting myself in the foot as far as chances for getting
tix are concerned, but I just talked to TIcketbastard, and here's

Show is on March 7, at 7:30 at the Embassy. Tix are $17.50 (ack! I
paid $7 for DMB in Chicago just 3 months ago), and they go on sale
THIS FRIDAY (yes, Feb. 3) at 10 am. I also talked to Michigan
ticketbastard, and they have no info about the rumored March 8
show in Kalamazoo, but I will post if I hear anything. I am trying
to get a contingent of Notre Dame students up for one or (hopefully)
both of these shows, but since it is during Midterms, I may be
the only one willing to just let my grades go to the dumpster (where
they presently reside) and go anyways.

If anyone else has any pertinent midwest show info, feel free to
post or send private email.

Peace,
Dominator

some more thoughts on dave matthews as a left acoustic guitarist

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Jan 31 16:02:42 1995

Rick-
Call me crazy, but isn't that Tim(i.e. the "right" guitar)? I
know he plays on the entire album, but then you would know more than
I...Peace -

this is the first response to my realization that dave is playing
through the left channel on under the table and dreaming, and i
think this is what i was trying to say, though i do remember not
mentioning tim's name.

basically, i think it's dave placed through only the left channel,
and then tim reynolds playing dave's material as dave wrote it through
primarily the right channel, but not completely drowned out of the
left channel. listening to it, the right hand channel is exactly
as dave matthews has always played these songs, but i still think
it is tim doing the playing, because that way dave and tim could play
at the same time during recording and build from there. if i'm not
mistaken, uttad was recorded "live" in studio, with overdubs later
by boyd and leroi.

Trinity and Downhill

IBASSIN@WESLEYAN.BITNET Tue Jan 31 16:36:55 1995

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I last posted but I have some q's
and c's. First off, im trying to take my friend to a surprise b-day concert
at Trinity on Friday but have been given the run-around by every trinity
organizer I have spoken to. I am a wesleyan student, part of Trinity's 3-college
consortium where Trinity students are allowed at our every event, yet I can't
go to the show there. I need a trinity student to purchase me a ticket in
order to go. And then, each trinity student may purchase at maximum, 1 $10
ticket for his/herself and one $20!!! ticket for a guest. If the issue were
space, and trinity wanted to guarantee that everyone from the school who
wanted to go could, fine, but apparently the Fieldhouse is big enough to
hold plenty more then the school so im a bit peeved. Does anyone have ideas
about how to get tickets for the birthday boy and a bunch of his nontrinity
friends?
Secondly, I love DMB but..... Higher prices, shorter sets, repetitive lists,
no patches, obnoxious crowds, shitty venues, campus shows closed to the public..
I mean, this band is getting harder and harder to follow and enjoy without
getting constantly agitated and pissed off. I still love 'em, and will still
go see them, but is anyone seeing my frustration?

TV Time & Other Things...

mwebber Tue Jan 31 17:29:31 1995

hey,
1.	BHT is scheduled to appear on the Conan O'Brian show on Friday
the 24th of Feb. This is obviously when the tour goes through NYC. So
keep your eyes peeled for Dave on Letterman either the 23rd or the 24th,
as this would be their only chance in the near future to appear on the
show, if at all.

2.	Check out the new 'Relix' magazine. There is a full page article
Salmon. Pretty basic stuff though.

3.	To the guy wondering about the patch for DMB. They have one
available now. It is a 3 inch circle patch of the 'Fire Dancer'. No words
or anything, just a circle with the figure in the middle. Its $6.00. Also,
with Fire Dancer Logo $60.00, 'Long John' material long-sleeved shirts
with Fire Dancer Logo $30.00 & $32.00, 'New band T-shirt' (pictures of DMB
with 'Dave Matthews Band' behind the pics. Pretty cool. I forget how much
those are...$16.00 or something. And for the youngest of DMB fans, the
'Just For Kids' T-shirts. They have the 'New band T-shirt' and the 'Stick
Figures' You can pick up a flyer describing all of the above at the show.
I don't think they had any of that stuff with them though. Or call Bama
Rags, and I'm sure that they would be happy to take your money.

5. Thats all for now.

Re: news to me....V-DAY CD

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Tue Jan 31 18:19:33 1995

I heard that the Feb. 14 DMB concert with the Richmond Symphony is going to be
made into a cd. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this rumor?

to my knowledge, no one on this net can verify this, but to me it
seems pretty logical. it would make for perfect timing for another
cd from the band if they released it towards the end of the summer,
perhaps mid september. i realize that is 7 months to commit the
show to cd, but it's probably how long it will take to get the legal
hassles of the symphony members contracts and all.

I specifically asked Mr. M. about this before the Houston show in Dec. He
said there were no firm plans - but that he was pretty sure they were going
to be taping it with some ADATs. He also mumbled something about having
Steve Lillywhite at the show to handle the recording, but that was more
like a "Wouldn't it be cool if..."

We talked for a little bit about the idea of trying to release live and
studio albums concurrently - especially when it was an event like this
where the live would be dramatically different from the studio versions of
the songs.

Here's hoping...
take care,
Jason

Got my tix and some rambling

philos@ritz.mordor.com Tue Jan 31 18:49:56 1995

Yee haw! My DMB tix finally came -- Roseland, 2/23, me and nine of my
friends -- yes, I actually got nine DMB tix in the mail. That was a thrill.
Is anybody else going to be there Thurs? Also, how early should we be there
to get good seats? General Admission, you know.

WIth regard to the newsgroup -- I think a Web page is much better. Prodigy
has a browser, CompuServe will have one RSN (Real Soon Now), and AOL will
have theirs up in March. This way, we can avoid repetetive questions; maybe
somebody could get links for RR and other tour dates that people request.
If we need an FAQ chapter on how to access URL's, I'd be happy to write one=
As a member of PhishNet, I think that "Minarets" as is remains far superior

1) We don't need to utilize kill files. How many Phish posts deal with
which band member uses drugs, etc. Lest you think that Dave is impervious,
we had somebody ranting about Dave having AIDS, and his sexuality.
Obviously, reading thirty posts by cool people a day is better than
scrolling through 200 posts, 40 of which are remotely interesting, and the
other 160 grovels or dumb stuff. [not to be judgemental, of course :-)]
2) It's really easy to post to a newsgroup. This leads to people not
thinking about what they post, and suddenly we have a switch from a bunch of
remote friends chatting about DMB and life's mysteries to anybody's guess.
3) With the band's video, and exponentially increasing airplay, how long
before we get people that really should read the FAQ asking the same
questions over and over again.
My two centimes -- go foreign currency!

Also, flames, and responses really can be kept to e-mail. It seems to me
just silly when somebody comes on to defend himself regarding a spelling
mistake. IMHO, those that waste bandwidth rambling about what's "right" ;-)
look just as silly as the person that made the typo in the first place. All
the same, I'm gowing to chec this ovr for typos before _I_ send it.
=93Can one be a saint without God? =97 that=92s the problem,
in fact, the only problem I=92m up against today.=94

DMB in Time

ERIC-NANKERVIS@Augustana.edu Tue Jan 31 18:56:00 1995

I haven't heard any notice of this on either net (although I am only
a week on minarets) but in last week's issue of Time Magazine there is
a blurb about the Dave Matthews Band. It is in the issue about the
Kobe earthquake (just a quick thank you to whoever posted the info
about sending tents to the shelterless in Japan-my fraternity has
raised over $200 in two days to purchase tents to send. Support
humanitarian causes! Back to DMB)

Anyways, for those of you who don't read (Time that is), I will post
the entire thing (I'm procrastinating writting a paper).

FAME, WE WHOLEHEARTEDLY EMBRACE YOU

Combining plantive alterna-rock lyrics with a Graceland-period Paul
Simon sound, Thr DAVE MATTHEWS BAND has become the rage of college
radio. Under the Table and Dreaming, its major label debut, has
also made the quintet an MTV favorite and poised its genteel hometown
of Charlottesville, Virginia, to become the next Seattle. Lead
singer-songwriter Dave Matthews, a hobby painter and self-proclaimed
mamma's boy, harbors no Eddie Vedder-ish loathing of fame, though.
"I'm grateful as hell. I wouldn't mind people knowing our songs in
Tahiti," says Matthews, "or even in Outer Mongolia."

Just thought that you all would like to read this. There is also a
picture of the band . Its in Time Jan 30, 1995, page 91.

Broken Strings

mcelvain@ucsu.Colorado.EDU Tue Jan 31 19:12:14 1995

After a few posts about broken strings and such, I thought that I would
share a story or two. First the Dave Matthews Band content and then a
little tidbit for those of you who don't hate Big Head Todd & the Monsters.
breaking their strings, it really picks up the show. This applies to
other musicians as well. At the Vail show last November, when Boyd
really got going, so did the fibers on his bow. It was really sweet to
see him wiggling all over the stage with half the bow flying around.
the side of my face if you have it on tape and have a real good, clear
pause on your VCR). Anyway, about halfway through the filming, Dave
really starts jamming and broke a string or two, which was cool
considering that the song was being played off a tape and they were just
playing to see their fingers move.
ago, they were putting on one of the best shows that I have ever seen.
Todd was switching guitars about twice a song because he was breaking so
many strings and the best part was that I am sure that at two different
points in the show I saw splintered drum sticks fly up from the back of
the stage! I don't know how common this stuff is but it was a really
intense show!

that small guy from WILLOW are play on banjos.
Opps actually thats a nightmare.

or is that oops.

Listen guys Newsgroups suck.

Secondly, what is up with all these angry people?
This is a dave net.
Specifically dave said during a recentshow (during Bluewater):

Hey, Hey! Fellas, chill the fuck out.

And to those of you who want to beat each other up, just get the fuck
out.

IN THINK THIS SHOULD APPLY TO OUR GROUP TOO!

IF YOU WANT TO STOP RANDOM MESSAGES, STOP TRYING TO USE DEGREDIVE AND
ELABORATE CUT DOWNS AND FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP POSTING THEM!!!!!

WHAT WOULD DAVE SAY IF HE EVER DOES LOG ON, AND THE FIRST THING HE READS
SAYS LIKE THE SHIT THATS BEEN ANGRILY POSTED THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS.

Thirdly, I don't think spelling should count on minarets,so don't
worry about it. I love ya'll.

**07.30.94 revised tree structure**

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Tue Jan 31 19:23:45 1995

go through.......hopefully it wont post
both structure posts for some stupid reason
.........

========================================
========================================

as promised
yesterday
here, again, is the info and structure for the
07.30.94 dmb tree........

there are a few changes......
these came about primarily due to the addition of one
entire analogue branch........

this is a combat boots tree, thus, to
effeciently do so, we must distribute this show
to everyone who wants one, in order to thwart
any desires to actually purchace the cd boot......

which reminds me.....earlier today, malachi asked what
he should do with phish cd boot he has........my answer....
send it to shelly culbertson.....or, go out on to the
beach and play frisbee.........just kidding....
rick thompson had offered to assist anyone who sees a dmb bootcd
and wants to get it off the market........
i dont know for sure, but i assume that offer still
holds true for any dmb bootleg cd's you find.....

additionally, i accepted many more people after
the structure was posted, and simply added the changes
to a new branch.........

i did, however, make a few more changes in the
interest of keeping people happy campers

ANYBODY who has emailed me since the structure was posted first,
benjamin sterling, marianne, ben gardner, john longmire
morgan dailey, ryan prosser, brw, sean (fishfood),
cliff@tamu and myself...........

these people have either 1 different child, or a
different parent......

in the event this causes any problem (which it may)
just get in touch with me, and we'll work it out
somehow.........

again, the important stuff........

this fits comfortably on a 100 minute tape, but
there are those who say it fits on a 90.....
this is your choice.......as I am told 100 min.
tapes are harder to work with during trades, but
I, personally, never care about giving a 100 and getting a
90......that's just not enough of a difference to
create a problem over....but that is up to
you to hash out..........

again......................
i apoligise for those of you that wanted to be branches, and
didn't get to be........as it turned out, i had
abot 3 extra branches.......sooooo i made some people leaves

next..........................if i fucked anything
at all up, then contact me...........i will definately
accomidate for any blatent screw ups.......

Anne anne anne & a revelation...

nebulous@panix.com Tue Jan 31 20:15:12 1995

1) In the liner notes for uttad who is Anne (the women in memory of?):

ack, not to waste bandwith butt...............

sincc obviously the little faq-y type of thing that gets sent
to people who sign on isn't doing its job, why doesn't
someone take on the responsibility of being the anne faq person...
basically have a nice little simple to understand paragraph
that this 'afp' as they shall be called will
kindly send it out to the guy or gal with the question...
seems simple enough....................
though maybe sort of pointless... :)

also... obviously dave is a big beatles fan... well, maybe someone else has
noticed that best of what's around is basically while my guitar gently
weeps, in some parts almost chord-for-chord

chorus of each...

dave... A C#m F#m A/C# D A E (w/ G# leading back to A)

beatles A C#m F#m C#m Bm D E (w/ F#, G#, and A leading back to A)

you know... i could have that D chord wrong after the Bm... but anyway,
it's just interesting...

i'm too lazy to go through the verse,
but you get the idea...just a random tidbit
from the chords.guy.....

you know, i'm not a bad haircutter... at least on myself.....

the bits and pieces of shows next to other ones.

newband, newband, i found a newband!

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Tue Jan 31 21:33:20 1995

Barenaked Ladies here at Colgate lst weekend and i liked them so much i bought
the company! actually i just bought the cd, which is primo! the band itself is
two acoustic guitarists who both sing (great harmonies!) and a percusionist who
plays bongos, congas and a tambourine. they were fantastic! they put on a
very high energy show and i haven't taken the disc out of my player in four
days!
tufts, so maybe they were students there. if anyone else out there is into
these guys, get in touch with me and let me know more about them, please and
thankyou. if anyone's interested, you can get discs and merchandise by
group out! i honestly haven't been this excited about a new band since my
friend lionel sent me warehouse, granny and i'll back you up on a mix tape two
years ago!

ps can someone let me know the date of "BIG LEAGUE CHEW" please? i'm
confused ;)

Ponder, ponder ponder...I do believe that someone here 'bouts posted a li'l

miss that invigorating burn as the flesh is removed from my leg (that's what we

I have a very far fetched grovel, and I'll post it everyday until I find out if

you have it, know someone who has it, have seen someone who has it, heard of
someone who has it puh-leez (please, please) send me SOME info!! Even if you
don't have it, but know that it exists send me some info. I have some niceness
to trade (and I think I can scrounge up a Bagby somewhere 'round here :) David

Hey everybody,
pertain to DMB, skip this. Anyway, I have been listening to three bands
from New Orleans that are awesome. The bands are Cowboy Mouth, Better

which is kinda cheezy, but are otherwise not bad. I was just wondering
if anybody else had heard of these bands, because I was bored and

Didst thou say FILLER?

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Tue Jan 31 22:11:48 1995

Personally I love filler on my tapes. It gives me a glimpse into what the
other person has in his/her collection, as long as it's labeled properly. I
love to spend hours (even days) finding just the right filler for a show. I
try to use rare or old stuff that most people don't have, this way a person
doesn't have to trade for a show just to hear "one song", as many people here
often ask ie "Does anyone have a show w/ Drive in, Drive out; Redemption song;
Me & julio, etc." I try to put songs like this on shows as filler. I also
tend to throw on my favorite versions of a song, a killer jam, or DMB members
sitting in with other bands (RR, ARU, the Samples). Anything that's special or
stands out. A while ago someone posted about getting a hold of a Lex. show
that I had made for another person at that school, he said in his post that
"what really makes this show is the filler". I personaly HATE dead space on a
tape, especially when I have to jump out of bed and hit FF or RWD, and I have a
lot of short, incomplete, yet good shows that work well as filler. So I just

***An important note to those of you just getting started in trading***
Always ask if the other person wants filler before you add it, and just to be
sure, if no one asks YOU, then tell the person making the tape if you want it
or not. It's not hard and it saves grief in the long run.

Re: solution to cliques, newsgroups, etc...

bmking@mail.wm.edu Tue Jan 31 22:15:16 1995

aye aye .. read what boofy posted earlier about solutions ... put
pertinent cut and dry stuff somewhere where anyone can access it ...like
a newsgroup (ugh i mean anyone connected to the internet) hmmm the
only problem would be that it would get corrupted with stupid stuff like
"dmb can lick me ..my boyfriend ditched me after the show"

hmmm... it's possible to create a moderated newsgroup, on which only certain
people are (supposed to be) allowed to post messages.. However, I don't know
how easy it would be to create a moderated group with the scrutiny most new
groups get these days..

Anyway, if this were the case, someone could just post tour info once a week,
faq once every couple, or something like that.

This would only be good though if there are actually people out there in
jimi-jimi land who subscribe to this list only for that info..

but that would be silly to do because it is very available on netspace.. and
once you subscribe I think you're told that..

so anyway..

but on the record, I am 103% against a newsgroup. a bit more tame than
phishnet, btnet has been linked to a newsgroup for some time.. another list
I've been on for quite a while (it was created on my bday, actually.. woo
woo), and it has changed dramatically.. once it was a few sicko bt fanatics
like I used to be, now everyone has joined.. not a bad thing.. just a
change.. anyway, being hooked to a newsgroup prompts a hell of a lot more
posting from the existing readers, and not to mention subscribership
(although technically uncountable) would rise geometrically.. as for non-
topical messages to the net, well.. that happens everywhere.. but on a
newsgroup-oriented list it would multiply tenfold.. all the lovely
advertisements that people post to all 10,000 newsgroups, all the followups,
all the anonymous posts ranting and raving, all the crap, basically,
increases.. I think it would make davenet unreadable. for those who read
phishnet, I either applaud or pity you. several hundred messages a day is
not something which I would like to wade through. and, I think that's one
thing that truly gives davenet something special, it's possible to receive
the list undigestified and not be overwhelmed. personally, I've never
digestified a thing, it's not my style, but if davenet were getting 200
messages a day, styles get cramped..

ramble ramble..

"but you hate people.."
"but I love gatherings... isn't it ironic?"

and, if I may be so bold, i'd like to point out that the list does have it's ups
and downs.. to those responding to hateful messages with hateful messages, I
implore you to listen to a guy who's been dead for 2000 years whether you happen
to believe he was delusional or came from "oh, daddy-o"... "turn the other
cheek"

"this job would be great...
if it wasn't for all the fucking customers.."

random notes :-)

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Wed Feb 1 02:40:27 1995

I'll try to catch as many topics in one message as I can.

I don't know about the rest of you, but a really nice AUD recording is
excellent and better than a soundboard IMHO. A soundboard often sounds like an
album but an AUD recording can put you front and center at the concert. The
problem is that few people can afford to spend thousands of dollars on mics.
That's right, if you want a really nice AUD recording its gonna cost you a
semester's tuition :-) Any decent analog deck onto metal tapes can make a
great SBD recording (let alone a DAT), but few DMB can afford to spend the kind
of money it takes to make equally excellent audience recordings. For that
reason alone having the feed disapear will suck. To unacustomed ears AUD
recordings will always suck, and SBDs are the best way to turn new people onto
DMB (or any band for that matter).

We will know when its time for the minarets.net to become a newsgroup. This
place will be so full that all of us will want a usenet group. One of the
really nice things about a mailing list like this one is that it is very
personal. People will write stuff in an email message that they would hold
back on if it was a posting to a more formal usenet group. A lot of the
interaction would be lost. In fact there would be a lot fewer messages a day
on a usenet group.

On the other hand people bash usenet groups unjustly. Its inevitable that when
you get a few thousand people in a room some people will be assholes, etc. It
will also be plauged with a low signal to noise ratio with people dropping in
all the time saying "I need some tapes, duuuude". However, this is the only
way for some groups to function. There are many advantages bu also many
drawbacks. As I mentioned before we will know (collectively) when and if it is
time for this move to be taken. It takes a lot of work to get a usenet group,
but I think the rec.music.artists.bruce-hornsby kind of led the way and we
could get a usenet group if we wanted one. Witness the DMB postings on the
phish and gdead boards.

I love filler. I hate it when there is 10-15-20-30 min of blank space at the
collection so you can hook up future trades with that person, 2) introduce them
to something new (e.g., DMB to a deadhead), 3) a rare or excellent song that
they might not otherwise come across, 4) to fill up space. I am sure there are
more reasons but those came to my mind. I first heard the DMB when someone put
it on as filler to a copy of the 10/27/91 Grateful Dead show. In fact he used
110 min tapes for both sets so that he could give me more filler. Every side
had a little bit of DMB on it...and look...here I am today :-) The filler was
an AUD recording too, heh.

This happens to everyone once and a while, and it happend to me the other day.
I was standing their in the living room listening to Dave sing "True
Reflection," and I got it...when a song all of the sudden really hits home and
affects you personally....that's the magic.....that is what we are all here
for.

Peace!

Re: BOOTS

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Wed Feb 1 07:11:14 1995

never pay for bootlegs!!!!! it's all about sharin' in the groove

Well, it's hard to share if you have nothing to trade. It's impossible to
get a tape of a single show. By the time I see any "newbie" offers, the
offers have already been closed. I've sent requests to be on 3 trees now,
but I have yet to see my name on a tree. Everyone here says don't buy
bootlegs, but I'm beginning to get frustrated beccause it seems impossible
to get a single tape.

you dont see your name on the tree structure i
posted earlier in the night, then i suggest
you look a little harder at the 66th name on there

and, second...if you didnt see your name the first few times,
then why didnt you get down to the point where i say
i am not going to refuse anyone a spot on the tree,
they can all be my children....*everyone*...that
includes you...(even though you are already on there)

and third...i dont think your personal frustration is enough
to warrant the illegality and distrust on your part of
buying an unauthorised bootleg cd.....especially when
we have authorised copies in front of us......

mail me 39 blanks...ill tape ya everything ive got.....

keith

oh..ps eric....watch carefully when i post the rare dave
structure (which isnt even close to being done)....
you are _already_ on there
im looking at it now.....
there... that's 2 of 3........next?

Tapes on the way

bmking@mail.wm.edu Wed Feb 1 09:28:53 1995

that you bring me lasagna at work..

I just wanted to say (say.. hah.. damn email.. can't say a damn thing.. can
only type..) a couple things 'bout the tapes.. first, if anyone sends me
anything, I promise to return them within a reasonable time period, hopefully
as quickly as I can. I've run out of blanks in the past, which hinders
trading, but people sending blanks should not have to wait.. making tapes is
one of the easiest things in the world.. I've made people wait and I've been
made to wait for several months before, and I know how frustrating it is..

hey, flood me. if acts of kindness breed acts of kindness, who am i to not
do something so simple yet so profound.. if I may quote...

=====================================

Hi x,

Just wanted to let you know that your tapes went out either yesterday or today
(I'm not sure if I mailed them in time yesterday) so they should be there
soon. Let me know if there are any problems. I haven't had a good chance to
listen to the tapes you sent but what I've heard sounds great. Thanks!

-------------
lookie lookie lookie what i got in my emailbox tonight!!!! its the xx
show hooray hooray hooray!!!!!!!! i'm dancin' around this office and the
fuckin' tapes haven't even come yet!!!! perhaps tomorrow...... :) :) :)

landfill.....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Feb 1 09:35:00 1995

I have been collecting tapes for some time now, and I have never understood
the logic in adding fillers.

Does anyoneotherthanme hate filler?

really care what dave i'm hearing, i just love hearing dave. but
a show is a show. basically, i like filler, but not if it interupts
the flow of a good show, so i only include filler after the encore.
even if my first set is only 60 minutes on a 90 minute tape, i won't
put filler there. only after encores. yep, encores. and really,
i think that's the best way.
sittin' there groovin' to the best show you've ever seen (or perhaps
more....it's sort of like an encore to the encore when you add it
to the very end....but if you put it anywhere else..particularly
between sets (even if the sets are on two different tapes) and
_particularly_ between sides of a tape (such as interupting a
set), it just doesn't work.

that's my take...

appreciate everyone who replied and give me information but I am still
wondering if there will be any Midwest shows?

Thanks again,

Keyboardish-sounds

gsp2m@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Wed Feb 1 10:07:53 1995

What's Around are Tim & Boyd as someone suggested. Tim really seems to like
to use his volume pedal, regardless of whether he is playing electric or
acoustic. He basically rolls the pedal of, plays little triadic chords, and
rolls the volume back on again, producing kind of a singing tone. Boyd could
obviously enhance this with the fiddle.

Band wants to see the Bootleg CD's

KARYME@aol.com Wed Feb 1 10:34:10 1995

I talked to my friend, who I would like to keep nameless for right now, and
the band would like to get copies of the two bootleg CD's.

I have written about this before, and I think it seems ironic that they want
them, but i have been asked if i can track them down. If anyone has any
idea of where i can get these, please e-mail me.

This is no joke, or ploy to buy them for myself, i already have the shows
that they came from, but i guess they would like to see them.

This is not too hard to ask- I know some of you know where it is possible to
get them.
Since you were not involved in manufacturing nor are you profiting from
telling me, there will be no legal action. You have nothing to worry about.

Thanks

Just a little note...
That show where Dave says, "Hey, my brothers, chill the fuck out.." was
not, uh, exactly recent. It was Zollman's 1/31/93! The best show I've
ever seen 'em play...
He heh heh
The funny thing is that the two guys were fighting over a girl. Hah- I
thought that didn't happen any more. Wow, what a night that was (eh Boofy??)

All quotes taken from Minarets #33

|newsgroup. I am sure anyone who is on Phish.net will attest to this. It
|seems that every 5th post on Phishnet is about DMB. I know that there are
|many phishheads that are pissed off about this. Just think, if there was

because I was one of those phish.net'ers that switched over to more of a
DMB fan than a phan. Thankfully, I found Minarets, but there are people
who don't know about minarets so r.m.p. is the closest-related place
they can find to find the DMB info they want. shrug

glad I found this place, and wouldn't want it to change into another
r.m.p. :D

|organizer I have spoken to. I am a wesleyan student, part of Trinity's
|consortium where Trinity students are allowed at our every event, yet I can't
|go to the show there. I need a trinity student to purchase me a ticket in

was closed to the general public. That really sucks, IMHO.

|Secondly, I love DMB but..... Higher prices, shorter sets, repetitive lists,
|no patches, obnoxious crowds, shitty venues, campus shows closed to the
|public..
| ..
|I mean, this band is getting harder and harder to follow and enjoy without
|getting constantly agitated and pissed off. I still love 'em, and will still
|go see them, but is anyone seeing my frustration?

bad, isn't it? But hey, what can we do about? Roll with the punches, I
guess. :( shrug

the deal with Trinity tickets

@mail.trincoll.edu:Alyssa.Moskos@mail.trincoll.edu Wed Feb 1 12:59:06 1995

sorry guys..i thought i had an extra but then my friend decided to reclaim it..

the deal is that trinity students were allowed to buy two tickets each..one
at a student rate and the other for a guest rate of 20$..there were 700
guest tickets put aside but i believe that they will NOT be available at
the door...your best bet is to find a Trinity Student who has only bought
their student ticket and bribe him or her to get you a guest ticket!

i have a problem

CJACOBS@smith.smith.edu Wed Feb 1 13:26:17 1995

my fortune cookie of late says don't criticize other people; instead, work on
how you can improve yourself and this is from confuscious, mind you, but, see,
i can't help it. last night i went to the providence show and ugly americans
bit my butt and bht, who i do enjoy on cd, had no sparks and so i was bored
but dmb, well, they were quite wonderful, better than others i've seen but
this isn't the point. it's the crowd. it's the fucking surfers and beer
spillers and people pushing and pushing and hurting people and yelling at
people and floozy girls who get smashed at the front of the stage who've never
even heard dave before and yet still had to be in front and that guy in the
attempt to get in front of me) and the crowd was so frickin ornery and mean
and jabbing and probing and pinching and all the while i'm just trying to
enjoy myself but it's hard to because chickenman keeps hurting me and i
wonder why are these people so inconsiderate? i think that the crowds at dmb
shows have to be the most obnoxious and impolite people. now, of course, i too
am in the crowd and maybe i was mean by nicely asking man with beer to not
step on by back but really...has anyone else noticed this? why is it? this
isn't the first time and people threw empty beer cups at dave and it hit him
and caught him off guard for a second and he looked pissed but ah....i don't
live in rhode island. that's all. just needed to vent.

oh, and if y'all see a goofy diarama in the next video or cd cover, it's mine.
