hmmm.... i guess i don't get it, not being part of "generation x motif",

but i was under the impression that minarets is for folks who get off on dmb
and share

vaguely similar interests...............if that's so, what the hell is this
asshole( a thousand

pardons; i promised myself i wouldn't flame, but it' not easy) doing here?
courtland, i guess

you just get off on pissing on other folk's fun. if all this fun we have here
pains you so much, just pack your shit

Well, I hd the unfortuante experience to be away from my account for
a mere two days. When I firts strated subscribing to minarets, i got
10-20 messages per day. Boy have we grown. This is my second e mail
account. I took me like a month to amass over 300 messages of non
discarded mail... In the past two days I received over 275 peices of
mail from this group, amazing.
interested in taking in the DMB/BHT show for free. Yes that is right
free. Love that word. Anyway, USC alswys puts on a free conert in
the spring entitled "Cockstock". yes i know its a bit corny, but
that's life. Well, rumor has it that this lieup is the leading
candidate. The guy who is setting it up is for this show, and is
trying to work it ou I guess. Iwill keep everyone updated, and as
soon as the good news gets in, we can start planning the big party
down here in Columbia!!!! have a good evening.Mark Dicus

??? for Edwin--got any?

weh2@Ra.MsState.Edu Sat Feb 4 12:13:45 1995

OK, kids, first off, this isn't very DMBesque, but if you like Ed McCain
AT ALL, read on. I've only seen him do half a set, and that was when he
opened for Hootie(yes, Darius broke his strings about a thousand times
and said that he was just gonna shake it off and get fucked up after the
show) in Memphis. I was quite impressed with what I did see, though.
Anyway, I work/dj at the campus radio station here at MSU(yes,
Mississippi) and we're supposed to get his CD in on Monday. Here's the
interview with him in a week or two, since I obviously knew a little
about him. OH, TWIST MY ARM!! So, it looks like I'll get to do that soon.

So, netheads with an interest in Ed, please grace me with your knowledge
and give me any suggestions as to what I should ask him. Chances are, if
it's a good question, I'll be able to grace you with his answers.

Of course, I would have loved to interview DMB at the House of Blues in
New Orleans, too, but that sold out before I knew, and RCA ain't big on
press passes.

edwin mccain show notes

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Sat Feb 4 14:04:07 1995

about ed mccain, he HATES people who mosh......
i heard him say that last night to someone,

actually, i know i shouldnt say this, but
im going to anyway.......and, look,
this doesnt need to be discussed anymore, (for
all you new subscribers)....we beat this topic to
death until it was extremely annoying, last
month........but, anyway (and i dont want to hear
it benji, and courtney and pak and whoever else
this is applicable to, who is cool....i know your cool benny,
dont give me shit).....but last week, in tuscaloosa,
the crowd SUCKED.....they were screaming and being totally
obnoxious.........
last night the crowd was extremely cool....and i mean
really calm, and very collected....it was an over 21 show..
tuscaloosa's wasnt.........now im not attributing
this to anyone except for those who were there, but
every single person who was being obnoxious in tusc.,
had their hand stamped for being underage.....
i really dont think this is much of an issue, i was just
floored at how cool the crowd was........

but anyway./.........
02.03.95.......Zydeco's in Birmingham, AL

(im doing this because i got _a_lot_
of feedback after the tuscaloosa show for doing this)

i was like 5 songs late, so thanks to patrick for
the help with the setlist!!!!!

set i
honour among thieves, america is sweet, sorrry to a friend, punish me,
kitchen song, 30 pieces, future love of paradice, battlefield
set ii
welcome to the 90's, life in the storm, ??, solitude,
little wing, message to ani* prayer to st peter*, 3 am* dont
bring me down, walk on the wild side, the world is running down

* edwin solo

scott was ON........tj was out of it a little, but ON
edwin was ON ON, the horn guy was ON....yanno.....

they didnt play quite as long as in tuscaloosa, but
they were more tight, and they played more originals.....

and the crowd was obviously more familiar with him.....
and being much less irritating,
thus, (or so he said) more originals.......in tusc,
he played five or six covers (albeit very very good)
but still covers......

we talked to them all after the show (they all say hi
cooper..madden today)......and they were extremely happy
the word was being spread......

and about playing aware today.....very excited...

and about playing with hootie..."it'll be fun"

didnt seem too thrilled about it, but he said, again,
he loved getting the exposure, so he was thankful...
and also he said he thought they would sound
so much better on a bigger sound system....i agree
and scott said they would allow taping, even if hootie didnt
because that was the way they were.....a lot of people
asked me about their taping policies, and im not sure
if i answered all the letters......but unlike the current dmb
situation, taping edwin is not going to be in jeopardy in the near future....
as long as they can help it......
so i asked edwin how much it really meant to them,
yanno, was it worth not getting the kind of deal they want
to hold true to their wishes for taping?....he said that
not allowing people to tape their shows WAS the kind of deal
they dont want.....sooooooo..............

oh.....and tj (drummer) requested that we take the tapes
(patrick recorded this one) and mail copies far far away.......
i guess i'll do that for the tusc show too.....

all really laid back.......nice nice show.....
now, ive gotta leave soon if im going to make the 3 hour drive to
the aware show on time......

swing kids....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sat Feb 4 14:16:32 1995

Incidently, the swing thing on the cover of UTTAD kind of LOOKS like a
big, round table, if you were sitting underneath it and dreaming. And I
thought it was just a pretty picture when I first saw it. Now I begin to
see the multiple strata contained within all of DM's work. What a genius.

--Tyler Z, one of the cloud people himself.

speaking of that table, i noticed last week while reading the liner
notes that dave took that picture. usually when the cover is designed
with the artists stuff, it's artwork. i think it's cool they actually
used a picture dave took. wouldn't it be cool if you were one of the
two people on the back cover?

since it seems dave has a healthy hatred of mtv and his record company,

Harrisonburg beware?

sctm@vt.edu Sat Feb 4 15:01:43 1995

Last night (friday) at the Everything show, Ryan (Everything's soundman)
told me that Gib Troll's last three shows in Harrisonburg have all been
sabotaged by some prick who knows a lot about soundboards. This guy would
swithch inputs, unplug monitors, flatten all the EQ's, basically just
screw things up in a way that made it very difficult to find. But he would
do it after soundcheck, but before the shows started, so the sound \man
thinks things are cool and then all hell happens when the show starts. But
it was basically isolated to Gibb Troll shows, appeared like whoever was
doing had something against Gibb, but Ryan said his last show in
Harrisonburg got sabotaged too. So now their's some prick in Harrisonburg
that is basically just screwing with shows and they have no clue who it is.
So all of you minareters in JMU land might want to look out. Seriously I
guess there's nothing you can do, but I just thought you all might be
interested. How do you get to Sweetbriar from Tech?

Trinity show + crowd surfers

<@mail.cc.trincoll.edu:Alyssa.Moskos@mail.trincoll.edu> Sat Feb 4 16:09:24 1995

Amen to Steve for his thought about crowd surfing...
I caught the Trinity show last night and to my absolute horror had to deal
with crowd surfers...now it is my theory that the people who were doing the
crowd surfing were the people who really didn't know anything about the
band and were just looking to liven up their evenings..now this is all fine
and dandy except that some of us would like to enjoy the show and not have
to worry about being clobbered by someone overhead...
Was it me or did the Dave portion of the show seem really short? I am not
sure of the exact number of songs or the order of songs that Dave played
but I do know that he played The Best of What's Around, Seek Up, All Along
The Watchtower,Dancing Nancies, The Song That Jane Likes, Tripping Billies,
Ants Marching and another song I had never heard of..I must admit i was
sort of dissappointed that he didn't play Satellite...I am a fan but I must
say that Big Head Todd was sort of lame..But from talking to my RA i
learned that the lead singer wasn't really feeling so well..There was also
a rumor going around that Dave himself was intoxicated ..hmmm.....I wish i
hadn't given up my Orpheum tickets!

nebulous@panix.com Sat Feb 4 16:19:56 1995

Question?
If it is agreed that Dave himself hates crowd surfers, why doesn't he
just stop playing if it gets real bad until the idiots get their asses kicked
to the ground because everyone will realize the music has stopped for the
moment? Sorry for the long sentence. Or maybe Dave could just say something

exactly... i don't understand... i don't agree with stopping a SONG because
that affects EVERYONE... but at lesat between songs....

all i can think of against it is that it would seem like dave
was just a complainer...... which would be no fun, but at the same time,
if he truly truly madly deeply believes that crowd surfers must die,
well he should openly make fun of them at shows. i don't know about you,
but if i had just crowd surfed through a typical rockin' lover lay down,
and dave promptly after the song went 'if you were one of the crowd surfers
during that last one, i just want to let you know that you aren't welcome
at our shows...' but then, it isn't really illegal to be an idiot....
if it was, a fucking lot of people would be in jail. rick could be warden!!

to the revelers to make fun of them or something. Just my thoughts from the
attic,

heh heh it's spreading!!

spread peace and good vibes even if dave has been tossed in the bin...

A Dave Story & Newbie Offer

JONEBRIAN@urvax.urich.edu Sat Feb 4 19:38:26 1995

What's fellas?
Thought I'd relay a story of an encounter with Dave my little brother had
last Wed. Dave was playing at Lupo's in Prov, RI and my father wouldn't
let my little bro, 14 years old, go because he had an exam the next day. So
he take my bro instead to Lupo's in the afternoon to get a T-Shirt. As he
walked in, Dave was doing his sound check and noticed his U Richmond hat
I gave him for X-mas. He called him over and asked if he went to UR. Upon
hearing that he did not and finding out that he wasn't going to go to the show,
Dave offered to play a song instead. SO what does my bro ask for? ANTS!?!?
I was like you moron! Anyway, Dave too thought that was a little lame so
he asked again and my lil bro said that his big bro's fave Dave song, being me,
is Two Step. So he played that for him. It always happens to the other guy
eh? I say Dave for Prez.

Also, the first Five newbies with NO DMB boots to e-mail me back with
their address will get a boot of their own and the address of the others to
trade between them. Whoever started that pattern was right on target. Good
luck!

Another Review

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Sun Feb 5 00:04:54 1995

First, K.A. Long commented that the Allmans don't jam. Well I have to
strongly disagree, and in fact few bands stretch out as much as they do. The
Mpls show I saw on 11/6/94 was 18 songs that lasted 3 full hours. They did not
even stop for a set break. They just kept on playing straight through. Two of
the songs lasted 45 minutes. Now back when Duane was playing they would rip
open a killer 45 minutes of Mountain Jam. This is a band that is not afraid to
let it all out.

Here is another review of UTAD which I think makes a few NEW interesting
remarks. This is from the latest issue of _Unbroken Chain_ and the review is
by Michael Bell (a nethead).

-------------------------- (typos are mine)

"My main complaint with many new bands, including some of the ones I like, is
that they are lacking in color. I always find myself saying, "This band would
be better if they had a keyboard or sax." With the Dave Matthews Band not only
do we get LeRoi Moore on saxophone but Boyd Tinsley on violin as well. Add to
that Dave Matthews himself keeps strictly to acoustic guitar, offering some
wonderfully refreshing textures that are never heavy. His voice, usually
soulful, can range from angelic to a raspy growl. The propulsive drumming of
Carter Beauford and supple bass of Stefan Lessard provide a variety of grooves
in the finest of funk, jazz and rock traditions. Over these grooves, Matthews'
voice, the saxophone and violin, weave a wonderful tapestry of many colors,
rhythms, and flavors.

This Band is fusion music in the good sense as developed by Miles Davis and his
disciples, not the fuzak we are subjected to today. This is fusion as the
combination of the best aspects of jazz and rock as well as music from around
the world to create something new. It would be easier to list the influences I
don't hear. To be brief, Blues Traveler, Mahavishnu Orchestra, the band
Oregon, and Sting from his "Dream of the Blue Turtles" days with Branford
Marsalis are all present within their work. The most prominent World Music
influences come from the Caribbean and South Africa, where Matthews was born.
They add some American folk music for good measure. My one main criticism is
that they could stretch out a little more harmonically.

DMB's new album, "Under The Table and Dreaming", is their first major label
release. It's a studio effort, in contrast with their earlier independent
releases which were primarily live. As one might guess, the studio work lacks
some of the edge and freedom of the live albums, but in exchange we get more
polish and balance, which really benefits the finer details of the band.
Highlights of the new album include "What Would You Say" featuring the
rapid-fire blues harp of Blues Traveler's John Popper. The lilting, waltz-like
"Satellite" is one of my favorites from the first album. "Typical Situation"
includes a nice flute solo by Moore and "Lover Lay Down" displays Matthews's
sweet folk side. "Jimi Thing" and the closing instrumental, #34, feature some
very fine sax and violin solo work.

Impressively (and coincidentally), "Under the Table and Dreamin" debuted at #34
on the Billboard album chart. Much of those sales are the result of the band's
devoted following in the central part of the east cost. I am sure there are
many others who have not heard DMB's music that could really get into it.
People fascinated with the unplugged trend and many jazz fans should find them
very appealing. I recommend the album to anyone looking for something new,
fresh, dynamic, and innovative."

DMB a cappella

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Sun Feb 5 00:48:50 1995

Hello minaretters,

It's been quite a while since my last post, but I experienced
something last night that compelled me to share it with a host of
people who might be interested.

Last night here at Georgetown there was an a cappella fest, and I was
amazed when I witnessed an a cappella arrangement of Satellite
performed before my very eyes. It was done by a group from Columbia
called the Kingsmen.

I suppose it was just the realization that Dave has reached the level
where he is being covered by a cappella groups that kinda shocked me.

Kinda neato I guess.
Good night.

Wake me up please, I'm having a nightmare!!

jfogelso@emerald.tufts.edu Sun Feb 5 14:18:54 1995

It's Saturday, February 4,1994. I wake up ( I think) and it's snowing
heavily. I recall with excitement that today is the day of the DMB show
at the Orpheum. It's 2:00 p.m., my normal wake up time. After looking
out of the window and laughing at all of the poor people outside
struggling in the wind, I get dressed and go watch my school whip some
basketball team that was supposed to be better than they were. After the
game, I head down to preparty for the show at my friend Rob's house.
We're right on schedule, and after we grab a bite and smoke a little of
the glorious green, we're stumbling out the door. Skipping ahead a bit,
we make it to the orpheum and look for the bus. Either it's not there or
it's changed color. We go inside and listen to the Ugly Americans (who I
didn't think were too bad) and I'm psyched when he invites us all up on
stage to DANCE ( where there is a hell of a lot more dancing space than
there is in the seats of the orpheum).
Anyway, they go off and there is a break, where Rob and I go to check out
the possibility of going backstage after the show. The guy at the back
tells me after the show to come back, but that I can leave a message. I
take an empty cigarette box and write a short to Leroi, who would be more
likely to remember me than the rest of them, and tell them to try and
pull "The Maker" ( you have to remember that this may be dream). Along
come Mr. Asshole, as we will tern the bully guard who wants no one on
"his Turf." We are herded out like brainless cattle.
Anyway, BHT come s on and warms up as the show goes on. I can't really
give a solid opinion on how they were, because I only know two or three
of their songs and those are the ones everyone else knows, which were
pklayed at the end.
****Tehn, the moments we've been waiting for... on comes DAMABA...opened
with a blistering SEEK UP, extra long. Tehn Dancing, then Warehouse, then
here's where the "dream starts to get unpleasant...the Opening chords of
OSW are played, which means no intro. NO INTRO!! I had been waiting for
the intro, which brought tears to my eyes the last time it was played.
To make things more dismal, Satellite followed, complete with the crowd
bellowing the words louder tht Dave. An uninspiring Typical and a
Recently with Norweigan Wood intro followed. Then *insert new babble
song* into a mini Carter jam ( I thought- Carter jam= Halloween, but I
thought wrong). This went into #36, WHICH WAS BY FAR not the best one
I've heard. I think one thing that took away from my enjoyment was that
the crowd was clapping during this song. CLAPPING TO #36? I THINK I'D
RATHER CROWD SURFING, OF WHICH THERE WAS NONE. #36 went right into Ants,
and it was at this time that I really realized that I was having a
nightmare. The guy next to me in my new space( I had moved up about ten
rows during #36) starting hitting on me and claaping and singing as much
a his body could handle( and more than mine could!!). I knew that the
show was almost over because Dave kept thanking us, and also becausethese
days, Ants is always played at the end. Sure enough, the band exits,
come back on and plays introBillies and then exits even more quickly
than the previous time. Tehn, to my absolute horror, THE LIGHTS GO ON.
I think to my self that it was a joke. 9 songs? No Davetalk. NONE!!
Boyd never went off. Carter never jammed. Stefan was jamming. Leroi
was on, but didn't get enough time to show us what he can do.
As for my Maker request and my attempt to get backstage, both were
obvoiusly denied. Mr. Asshole wouldn't even let me by to talk to the guy
at the door. These werre the same guys that I talked to as recently as
their November 12 show in Boone(MEEEEMORIES!!).
Is it just me, or would anyone else be heartbroken at this setlist?
Anyone who had been listening to the band back in 92 when Peter was still
around? Back when Spotlight and People,People, among others were played
to a crowd of maybe thirty? Sorry, but I'm really bumming. I'm happy
for the band, but i feel let down after that show.
To cap off my night, I ran into a guy I had had a futile infatuation with
lst year, and he said (after having attended what must have been his
first show), "Hey Jen. Great concert, huh?" I looked him straight in
the face and said,"No, not really. To be honest with you, it was the
worst DMB show I think I've ever seen." Shocked at this, my friend
said,"You really tought so? How many times have you seen them?" When I
replied 25 or 30, his eyes grew big and he was speechless. I sighed and
recalled the sight of his two friends in front of us , who were clapping
their little hearts out.
Any way, I woke up again today with a nasty hangover and the realization
that it WAS sunday and that I really had been to this severely
uninspiring show. I know this may be the price of fame, but $25 to see 9
songs when having once payed five to see 15 or 20? Someone please inspire
me!! I need help. I love this band so much and have for so long,
but...NO JIMI THING!!! NO RHYME & REASON? NO you get the picture. My
heart is broken. This was undoubtedly the worst setlist I have
encountered in my 2 and 1/2+ years of listening to this band. SO...
*****as a result, I am officially open for trading... Anyone woth any 92
or 91 especially, please inspire me with a good show trade or two. As
for you newbies, being that A, you made it throught this post and B, I am
in a bad mood and thus willing to subject myself to misery, I will copy
the show of your choice from my ever expanding collection. This is for
the first 15 or so people who respond, not including people who wabt to
trade . THERE IS A CATCH... newbies must be newbies (i.e. don't tell me
you're a newbie if you aren't and you want a show), blanks and postage as
always, AND EACH NEWBIE MUST INSPIRE ME WITH AN ANSWER TO THE FOLLOWING
may includ e more newbies if I get some really good answers.
CONGRATS TO ALL WHO MADE IT THROUGH! also, CONGRATS TO JEFF PETERS ON HIS
RAVE REVIEW OF GUS, who are from my school. I highly recommend them. I
went to see them on Friday, and looking back on it, it was what salvaged
my weekend.
Tke care everyone, and may all of those of you with future plans to see
the band get a MUCH BETTER SETLIST than we at the Opheum got.

Are there no good decks available?????

sctm@vt.edu Sun Feb 5 16:21:13 1995

I have spent the last few days searching catalogues and stores for a good
tape deck and I can't find one that has everything!!! The JVC's seem to be
the best I've found but even on those I can't find one that has dual wells
and three separate heads, and the other perks like music search. If
anybody has any info on good decks in the $250-350 range, contact me
please. I think now I am looking for a more expensive DAT and say screw
this anaogue crap. If someone could send me a phone number I can call and
get a catalogue of DAT's (Crutchfield doesn't sell them, they suck), I
would love you forever! Please help me!!! I think TEAC makes pretty cool
DAT's anyone know how I can get some info on them? Actually any brand is
ok, I just want to start comparing.
is going on. I like the DMB so much because they used to just go nuts up on
stage jamming. They played lot's o' music and were full of energy. They
play like crazy for 3 years gaining fans and support for their unique music
and just when it seem slike they're going to make it big they change their
style to this everyday Spin Doctors/place any mainstream band's name here/
crappy 8 songs and off we go. And then in some doumb article Dave says he's
pissing off RCA by not playing WWYS, who cares??? Does that change
anything? No, he's still playing crappy set's (song and length wise). If
Dave hates RCA why sign wiht them? I'm with the Roadwarrior (or maybe
ex-Roadwarrior), screw this new crap, I think I'm going back to trading
for old tapes! I must say the Symphony Show sounds like the last DMB show
I'll be excited to see (regretfully).

stkukla@acad.ursinus.edu Sun Feb 5 19:46:16 1995

I know I sound like a really sorry and pathetic soul, but I am willing to
part with a part of the body for 2 tix on this date. By the time that I
was aware of the concert there were only tix available for the 11th show and
it is impossible for me to attend on that date. If there is anyone out there
that can help a person attend their first DMB concert please respond.

so..........what....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sun Feb 5 19:46:59 1995

Hello All-
I recently received a bunch of new tapes (Thanks Mav!). As a filler on one,
there is a song titled "So Happy". It's a sweet little song, but I had never
heard of it before. If anyone out there in minarets land nows anything about
this song (when it was played, why it isn't played anymore, why it is never
mentioned, etc.) I would be much obliged. Thanks in advance...tom

this is the song that most of us stupid va. type folk (and a few beyond
us stupid va type folk) refer to as heathcliff's haiku warriors.

we call it that because dave never called it anything in the three
times he's actually played it, but i think it was bagby or someone
who said he might call it so happy.

then again, if you listen to the premier version of the song (big
league chew, 3-23-93), you'll find it is anything but a happy song,
even if it is fun to listen to. the lyrics are really somber, but
i can't remember any of them right off hand.

3-23-93 (big league chew)
7-6-93 (with greg howard sitting in for stefan)
11-9-93 (remember two things cd release party)

Boston 2/4/95

cypherc@cleo.bc.edu Sun Feb 5 20:04:15 1995

Well kids,
If Ben Tanen doesn't have any comments, I'll take it upon myself to comment. First of all, the
crowd was young, very young. My friend actually got freaked out when we saw all these 14 and 15
year old kids his little sister's age at the show. It seemed like they were there to hear Ants
and Satellite and that's it. There was no crowd surfing, thank God, but the fact that the
Orpheum is reserved seating kind've prevented that. The show itself was really short (only
about 1 hr. 10 or 20 mins.) but had it's high points. Typical Situation and One Sweet World
were excellent as were Boyd's solos in Nancies (he was breaking strands off his bow). The band
had crazy energy at first but seemed to lose a lot of it at the crowd's lack of response to
Norwegian (sp?) Wood in the beginning of Recently and the fact that poeple actually sat down
during #36. My friends and I were probably in a group of 50 or so who were dancing and grooving
while the rest of the crowd sat and waited for Ants to go crazy. Well, all in all it was a good
show, although a short one, even though the teeny-bopper/New England Prep School crowd kinda
sucked.
Bummed that I didn't hear Lover or Granny,
Craig Cypher

P.S. Please tell me that DMB at Lollapalooza is and will remain a rumor.

Dave sightings

seandev@beacon.regent.edu Sun Feb 5 21:21:24 1995

Dave sighting number 1... Over Christmas I was up in New York and I saw a
commercial for the Wiz (a cross between Circuit City and Blockbuster
Music). They were advertising UTTAD and showing a clip of Tripping
Billies. They showed about 30 seconds of it. I was nly able to here bits
and pieces of the song because of the voice over plugging the album. Has
anybody seen the entire video?

Dave sighting number 2... What Would You Say was the smash or trash video
on Sound FX, the music consumer guide show on the new FX network. If your
cable company does not offer this channel tell them to get it. This show
is the hippest show on today. Anyway WWYS was on the segment where people
can call up and either smash or trash the video. The three hosts are not
allowed to give their opinion's, but Hootie and the Blowfish were on the
show as guests and they gave the video and Dave two thumbs up. In fact
the drummer (?) said that he would personally kick the snot out of anybody
who trashed the video. By shows end WWYS was 80/20 smash/trash.

Dave sighting number 3... Thursday 2/2. Broad daylight. 2:30pm. WWYS
on MTV. The VJ (some guy with long hair) didn't hype it, but still it has
finally creeped out of the midnight hour.

Strawberry Banks show in Hampton last August. It was at this show that I
proposed to my girlfriend and I would like to give her a tape of the show
for our anniversary coming up (she said yes by the way). Also her
favorite song is Lover Lay Down, does anyone have a Bagby with a nice
version of this song. I am willing to trade or pay for either.

Tickets to Philly, Sat. night

andynyc@panix.com Sun Feb 5 21:31:12 1995

Hi there all, I'm mostly a lurker 'round here but I have two
tickets I won't be using for the Tower Theater show on Saturday
Feb. 11. The tix aren't the best, but they are inside the
building, which is most important.

Let me know if you want them / need them... I'm actually more
interested in shows than the money... I'd be especially receptive
to replies from those of you with shows that pre-date Mr.
Clinton's presidency.

Anyone interested, please reply soon so I can get the tix to
you ASAP. Thanks.

Hey all,
I have a couple questions, maybe some of you can help me out?...

1st - ok, dont kick and scream if this is a stupid question, i am a newbie (but
i am working on pulling myself up) anyway, i have noticed in a lot of posts
people referring to a song called "#36"... is this that same as #34 and if so
why do people call it #36, or is it a completely different song?

2nd - does anyone know whats up with the lead singer of the Ugly Americans
getting "lost?" When the tour came here last week, (1/27) after the show the
lead singer of the Ugly Americans hung out and smoked a few bowls with me and
my friends, he was very cool... anyway if anyone hears what happened to him,
i'd be psyched if you could let me know

3rd - shit--- i know i had a third question, but i have had a severe case of
insomnia, 10 hours of sleep since last sunday night and i have had trouble
thinking lately (lack of sleep and alot of weed are good for that)... it really
sucks, but i have had all the more time to listen to Dave

#34 and #36 are completely different songs. #36 has words, no particluar
set of words, but words nonetheless. It's a more upbeat song.

to elaborate, #34 used to have words... i'm guessing it will never be
played again... good... i'd hate to see 95% of the crowd start chatting
during one of the most emotional pieces of music i have ever heard... who
knows how many people i would kill if that happened...

also... isn't this in the faq?!?!?!? please please please read the faq
before you ask questions which may seem to YOU to be obscure, but are
actually pretty much common knowledge... this isn't a flame at ALL... but
gosh shouldn't the whole damn faq be sent out instead of that wimpy intro

three thousand five hundred miles away...

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Mon Feb 6 00:04:03 1995

well well well...
small little clare tidbit for ya'll. this is rusted root related. so..
no dmbc.

i am a major (did i emphasize 'major') fan of teh tv show
(my dad and i bond by watching all teh
beat-em-up-kill-em-blood-and-guts movies togetherr)
and he got me hooked on this show last year.
anyway.. it's, like.. the only tv i watch at all.
and my dad and i still bond by watching 'homicide' together
every friday, even tough he's over 3 hrs away from me..
i always know he'll be watchin it same time as i am..
(usually.. he likes to call later that weekend to chat about
homicide... man.. you should see my dad.. two-war veteeran,
retired army aviator, 'cussin and hackin and chewin and spittin'
type) oh my.. i'm ddigressing muchly..

anyway...
this show playes kickass music.
REALLY kickass music!
and the pieces they use, fit with the plot, or action sequence of
what's happaning at that minute...
and theyr'e playing a rusted root song during this
very intense stakeout and capture of this suspect.
they were playing 'drum trip', the first song off the 'when i woke' cd.
go listen to this song. amazing. then inmagine it in the scen i mentioned.
kickass.
make sure you watch 'homicide'
i will one day carry a gun.
beware.

on another note....
talking about evil automible police officer ticket chafes....
boofy wrote this.....

'I was listened to my fresh copy of Wait from the night before, was in the
middle of ants.....'

yet another reason why this song is evil.
heee heee...
i'm jsut joking all..

its' nice to see that dave will still play a two-step for a 14 yr old who
cant' make his show.
think about this next tiem you think the band is selling out.

love and light
firewater
and snowangels...

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Mon Feb 6 01:03:39 1995

Sorry pholks, this is a personal note to a few people and I didn't want to
write it out several hundred times. If you are Joe (in CA), Justin Haveman,
Beth (from TX), Lee Kallman, Mike Kimberling, Clarke (in NC) or anyone else
trading/expecting tapes from me let me apologize for my situation. I've gotten
way over my head. In the past three weeks I've spent $112 on blanks alone.
I've kinda run out of money and to boot, for those of you who's tapes I've
already made (Joe) our bookstore has run out of the right size padded envelopes
and I've used up my private hord of said envelopes.

***********************But NOT to worry**************************************

I will have money by this coming saturday, and will spend the better part of
Saturday afternoon spinning tapes. If I cannot get the proper padded envelopes
by then (our post office is pretty sad and doesn't carry them) I'll get ahold
of some bubble wrap and send your tapes two-day priority mail. I know all of
this fuss may seem strange considering that none of you has been expecting
tapes from me for more than a week (some of these trades aren't 4 days old yet)
but some of you have already put your tapes in the mail and I know the anxiety
of waiting for tapes, so I just thought I'd keep you updates.

mind waiting 'till I can get Maxell's, I can have your tape to you by next
Tues.(?)
all over my tapes and I have to sit and edit it myself, not to mention the
filler. I will get this to you though.

keep my status as a good trader, not to mention that I pride myself on prompt
and courtious service. :)

pre-Vday gathering at 3rd st., let me know and I can deliver your tapes
personally. Thanks for your patience!

euphoria..........

JIMMYP123@aol.com Mon Feb 6 01:18:05 1995

the subject says it all......
just got home from dmb show #2, where can i start????
sold out show-
ugly americans-well, lets just say that was the part of the show where i got
my cup o' beer (worst sound mix i ever heard)
big head-pretty much bored the shit out of me, with the exception of a
surprising catchy james brown medley-type thing. go figure.
then, the show began.
got to be one of the best concert experiences i've had so far. the crowd was
great-no crowd surfers, no moshing-just a bunch of really cool people who
were appreciating the show. crowd was LOUD-but quieted down nice for the
softer moments. and the band was receptive-it was not hard to tell. they were
incredibly intense, much better than at the horde this year. i was going to
take down a setlist, but i couldn't stop movin long enough to get out my pad.
here's what i remember, in no order-
satellite
recently- (some great song that i forgot the name of)
rhyme
lover lay down
dancing nancies
jimi
ants
one sweet world
billies
i think there was more, but i forget.......
jeez, i'm gonna have this smile on my face for a long time....
fuck rca, fuck buzz clips, fuck selling out-i don't care what anyone says,
dmb will remain-this can't be stopped, because it is a vibe, it is something
that won't be there when you listen to it in your car, or your living room,
or on mtv, but it will be floating around when you see them playing in front
of you-it enters your soul( if you let it) and moves you, physically and
emotionally. no band that "sells out" plays the way that they did tonight. i
hope this isn't all nonsense, it's just what is going through my
head......this isn't drunk mail either, i'm completley straight tonight, i
couldn't have appreciated it any other way..well, maybe not :) lets just stop
worrying about the band and enjoy them, enjoy this net, enjoy our boots-i
trust that the band will stay true to it's TRUE fans, those who really
appreciate the tunes. i think we're ok. if you haven't deleted yet, thanks
for reading my thingy here. goodnight, maybe i'll see y'all at the next show
:)
lets try this sig again, sorry it got so messed up last time.......

buzz clip

cucr3@uxa.ecn.bgu.edu Mon Feb 6 11:17:39 1995

Hey all,
clip, why don't you do what I do when MTV latches on to a group and/or
song that I like--stop watching. I have found that this works well, as I
tend not to get tired of a song that I would otherwise love. Of course,
in the case of bands like Green Day, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana, this
strategy doesn't always work, but since I have yet to see the new video
(I usually only flip to MTV during commercials) I assume that this little
trick is still working as far as DMB is concerned.

VH1....

MHIBLER@LOYOLA.EDU Mon Feb 6 11:54:16 1995

end of some sort of interview thing with the director of WWYS. He was mumbling
about the videos that he had directed, and they were showing cuts of the Dave
video and cutting out to this director guy, the only things I caught were
something about Dave wanted the video be left open so the viewer could conjure
his own idea of the song while seeing them live because thats what they do
best... The director guy also talked about Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge(SP)
videos that he had done. It was severly random and sort of strange, nonetheless
intriging...

Re: buzz clip

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Mon Feb 6 12:58:04 1995

Hey all,
Forgive me for askin, but if y'all don't like DMB being a buzz
clip, why don't you do what I do when MTV latches on to a group and/or
song that I like--stop watching. I have found that this works well

Of course,
in the case of bands like Green Day, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana, this
strategy doesn't always work

sometimes it works well, but sometimes it doesnt work???

no, dont answer that.......it doesnt matter
because it's not about how many times we hear the song, and
how fast we're going to tire of it.......
we cant just turn it off

and it's not a matter of
how it changes the band
and that's a damn good thing......

it's a matter of a) how the fan base spreads
and b) how their record co. treats them...

the fans turn from people who truely love their music
and more and more people claim themselves as fans
if they loooove one song........
I have to reach waaayyy back for this one, so sorry,
but how do you think dexy's midnight runners became pegged as
one-hit wonders?.....easy....mtv played 'come on eileen' all
the time, and people loved it, and the runners basked in stardom for
3 months.,.. now, during those 3 months, their fan
base changed from college alternative, into a LOT of pre-teens
and younger people who only liked one song......eileen..
meanwhile the old fans of the runners, were irritated that
these people would only like that song, and not listen to anything else
even though these teens claimed to be fans....ya see?

only now, it's not just the fans that don't like this attitude, but
the band, too......dave said once that if he hears one more
girl screaming sattelites sattelites sattelites during watchtower
then he would scream......and i know that was happening before mtv
ran wwys, but i have a feeling it's worse now......

and as for part b......look at the current tour......read
some of the posts about the shorter shows, and the bands
discouragement at people in the crowd, and their actions.....
and i wish you all could have heard him talk about rca
and todd.....he wasnt that thrilled, but he kinda felt he had to
i think........

i dont know....i just see the progression of bands in the same situation
mother love bone pearl jam
green day
phish
it's not wholly mtv im worried about,
that's not what happened to phish....

it's just the whole popularity, and the
role mtv plays in it.......and if the band
wanted to be zillionaires, then id be happier, but they
really dont (or at least it doesnt seem so)

i, for one, will be happy with any good music dmb
puts out......but i wont go see them on the
193rd row, with sattelite screaming girls all around me
because they have the #1 vidoe AND a new buzzclip

yet, i love dmb live./......i just dont want the
scene to turn into that

my two cents

MTV Commercials

mcrider@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Feb 6 14:54:06 1995

Overnight Dave has not only been elevated to Buzz Clip status but has
received Buzz Clip "Honorable Mention" in MTV's new commercials. When I
heard about DaMaBa becoming a Buzz Clip, I feared it would soon be
incorporated into a "Plug Into MTV" commercial. This morning about nine
o'clock I actually relieved to see a new MTV commercial with Portishead and
others but no Dave. However, by noon they had added a introductory sound byte
of WWYS. Whether you applaud this widespread attention or not, be assured
that every hour on MTV whether you are watching Sandblast or The Real
World, you can receive your daily dose of Dave on MTV.
