Pretty good quality. Dave says "Seek Up" is brand new and has no

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Thu Feb 9 13:52:07 1995

ok
its closed

there..........

now, i hate to be disgusting, but i thought
about this yesterday
and i gotta know............

sorry if your eating, or whatever...........

but has there *ever* been a case reported
in any recent time of someone buying
eggs in a grocery store
and having one be a chicken
instead of an egg?

i know i know
i humbly apologise
but this has been bugging me for
two or three days...........

oh yea......one other thing
one time i said michael hedges' version
of watchtower was my favourite....
i gotta retract that, now........after
listening to the tuscaloosa show
from a couple weeks ago, i have
to say edwin mccain's is superior

oh....and one more.......
two people sent me their tape lists
via snell mail

a snell is a..what? benny?
a quiet snail, or something

anyway, those lists
are totally devoid of identification
except for one guys name........
i need your email addresses
i wanted to get in touch with you
but i cannot....

and im serious about the egg thing..........
that has great bearing on what is left
of my life

it's a rather disconcerting image, to
say the least, but i don't know
if i can look at the chicken man the same
until i know

and, for those of you digestified

i'll take wait requests until
tomorrow
even though i'll probably post the structure
tonight
i have a few blank spaces that
people can be stuffed into
if need be, even though i don't
forsee this as a problem

Re: Dave and 90210

greenpd0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Thu Feb 9 14:06:46 1995

hey all--
with all this talk about 90210, i gotta be wondering two things. one, in
last weeks episode some hot a&r girl tried to seduce ray pruitt away from
donna
(horse face) and into a recording contract. is that how dave got signed
to rca?
and two, it looks like tiffini amber-joyner-kersee-whatever-the-the-hell-her-
name-is is going to try seduce ray next week. do you think they'll ever
get dave
in a jade-like cameo and she'll try to seduce him? maybe he'll grow some
side-
burns just for the occasion.
and you can't keep adding names to the list of pretty people on tv without
including helen hunt, the girl with the reddish hair on friends, oprah, and
that doctor on er.

entirely too much free time on my hands,
                                theo

i was just kidding about that oprah thing. really. no really, i don't have
an
oprah fetish.

Theo-
I think we need to talk about your problem. Admitting that you
have one is the first step to recovery. And stop talking about 90210 and
Dave Matthews in the same message, we don't want to give him any more ideas
on joining the mainstream.
Andy

Fun stuff and Philly show

SHOWTIME/SNINETFRM2/yangj%Viacom@mcimail.com Thu Feb 9 15:28:57 1995

Hello People

Getting psyched for the Philly show at the Tower Theatre. Going Saturday.
meet some of you wacky DMB netters. Let's discuss. I say we sabotage the
equipment of Big Head Todd and the Ugly Americans so Dave can play 2 full
sets like it ought to be. Who's in?

Yo E (Easter)! No more cramps. OHhhhhhhhh YeahhhhhhHHHHH!!!

Dude, " I'll vacuum up " Wish you could come to Philly. How are
classes? Bug jar?
Not a whole lot happening w/ me

Marianne, are you back on the bus? Are we in for a good hang this weekend?

Gavino, who's your pimp? Road trip. Oh yeah! Should we give McBeever a
call?

BRW- did you get my message. I'm hoping for a long Carter solo on
Saturday. Give up the funk.

All the rest- it's a cold day in New York City and I'm ready for a nap.

Peace and all that jazz

Jonathan (mr. bitter)

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Thu Feb 9 15:40:17 1995

Sorry for posting so much last night, I kinda worked myself into a frenzy, it
was not a pretty sight!!!

I didn't put much thought into it last night, except of course that Bluewater
_must_ follow Seek up, the loud yet soothing cymbalsat the end of SU-Blue
water would just do it for me.

#34 would be sweet, but I'd really like it to have the lyrics.

The Davespeak (TM) before Ants on the election night show is reason enough for
me to start liking that song again.

Jeff, I may be posting too much but you're the one reading my mindless drivel.

Clare, I still want fudge.:(

Theo has great taste in movies.

"Boofy" may not be fun to type 110 times, but it's still fun to say!:)
Boofy, Boofy, Boofy!!!!!!

"That shit _kicks my ass_!!!!!!"

Only people who can sing the theme from Shaft may smoke in my message.

(e:) = Ska?, and other assorted ramblings

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Thu Feb 9 15:41:42 1995

Sorry, I've been gone... Did you miss me? Prob'ly not, but that's obekaybe...

Maybe I don't know what ska is, but I wouldn't exactly classify the everything
6, kinda like the Dave Clark 5, as ska....Yes, SLWB is a little gratuitous,
but is it? Could it be making fun of all the stuff we do? Listen to Lauri,
and tell me that they're not making a point. If you don't know Lauri, or have
it on tape, I have a reallly old one, it was my first Nichol [ the new
official name for Everything tapes, sorry had to borrow/steal the idea from
Minarets] and it was here at lil ole davidson.....anyway, how can you resist
the horns on SLWB anyway, ahh, new years.....

"come and dance with me" is from #36, "it's in the game" oops, sorrry, played
NBA live 95 at my fraaah-ter-nitty house one too many times, "it's in the faq"

gotonetgatherings
in case anyone wants to contribute anything, I am working on everything lyric
and faq files, for what i hope will one day be an everything list, if i can
convince the people here to let me do it damn I hate bureaucrats...

how's the edwin thing coming? anyone should go see him and talk to him and
bring him a bagby after the show, as he really likes damaba and also Seal...
This is according tyo him and a friend of mine here who introduced me to
him.....

gotonetgatherings
last night, i had the distinct pleasure of seeing a fraaah-ter-nitty brother
who plays in Other People, none other than Cito[Cido?] anyway, these guys
rock, and a I taped but the gods of taping weren't with me last night, my deck
got cut off on the first side and I screwed up taping the encore, but the rest
of the show simply rocked.....i'll let you know how the tapes came out if
you're interested.... here's his schedule for anyone interested, as you all
should be.....
Thu 9 Clydes Columiba, SC
Fri 10 Berts Bar Charleston, SC
Sat 11, same
Wed 15 Lighthouse, Elon COllege, NC
Thu 16 Magnolia St. Pub Spartanburg, SC
Fri 17 Blind Willies Statesboro, GA
Sat 18 Chameleon Club Atlanta GA
Tue 21 Blues Barbeque Boone, NC
Wed 22 T-bones Lynchburgh, VA
Thu 23 Be Here Now Asheville, NC
Fri 24 Ten Years After Hickory, NC
Sat 25 Peasants Greenville, NC [ okay all you down easters, go!!!!]

i ended up meeting about 3 davidson grads last night, which was really
cool....

since dmb aren't allowing taping, I'm taping anything that moves, so don't
sing in the shower unless you want some stealth taper getting it!!!!! grin

gotonetgatherings

if you made it through this message, then you deserve a medal, or
something....

last time, and the offer will close next week on Feb 17th [ fri], if you can
name the club down the street from Ziggy's that often featured TX Boogie, and
other primarliy southern rock bands and burned down about three years ago,
then you can pick any tape you want out of my collection and I will spin for
blanks....this is a newbie offer, but ask some older fans for help on the
trivai question....if no one figures it out, then i'll go hang my head in
shame and just make a normal newbie offer.....

I don't need a subject

Thomas_Thornton@baylor.edu Thu Feb 9 15:48:06 1995

Am I getting too damn old?

I found myself thinking that VH1 is now much cooler than MTV yesterday, 'cause
those guys ran about an 8 min. Blues Traveler Segment, then played some cool
shit like WWYS and Sarah McLachlan's new vid. Then they talked about how Popper
plays on WWYS, and on, and on...With those guys, at least you don't have to put
up with crap like Hole and the Offspring!!!!

That 90210 thread was funny...my apartment was just debating whether or not Ms.
Saved By The Bell had some work done...guess we weren't the only ones.

I wish my copy of RECENTLY would show up in the mail.

I also wish that DMB would pull their bus into my apartment parking lot, then
bring out their stuff and this awesome blues guy Tab Benoit and then call up
Malford Milligan and Double Trouble from Storyville and have a free DMB "Blues
Jam '95"...what a concept!

Oh, well. At least one wish will happen (I hope).

Still hoping that one day I see Dave live... Tom

elissa is a really great gal that i thought people would be interested in
meeting cause 1) she's a great gal and 2) she's eric's sister. (we can all
admit to being at least mildly intrigued by this character, no?) No sex
involved or implied unless parties agree to it voluntarily with or without
my involvement, physical or otherwise. :-) come see ani come see ani, meet

and just for eric, (cause i think he likes public displays, is this a
fantasy dear?) if your sister did not perceive tension and I did, that
does not, my fatalistically mono-perspective side-kick, mean that i was

hear a musical collaboration at some point in the future, preferably at a
private party at my place. all minaretters to be invited.

peace and pierogies,

DMB USENET Status...

huppert@bucknell.edu Thu Feb 9 16:10:58 1995

If anyone knows the procedure about how to go about starting a DMB Usenet
Message Base... please send me the information! I would be willing to
either RUN the operation or just help out!

All I remember is that there has to be a petition for a new group to be
started! At the moment there is a folder Alt.Fan.Dave, under it you will
find 'Williams'. How about a push for 'Matthews'!!!

Again, I am willing to get a petition going if it's possible to get the
group started!

forrest gump is a fictional character so the only person who truly knows

but it has been discussed here several times that dave looks a great

third street diner is on the corner of

some people seem to be confused about this.
if you have any questions
EMAIL ME DIRECTLY!!

the balcony at 3rd street diner
commonly referred to by the public as

there will be only ONE tab..
so it would be much appreciated if
everyone is honest about contributing
the price of whatever food/beverage/waitress
they purchase, including a reasonable tip (gratuity)
that they see fit.
its under my name, so dont' shaft me cause i dont' have any money to pay

which houses
kiss and make up....
and we will tactfully and precisely
compile accurate directions to both

Chicken and the egg

olga@email.unc.edu Thu Feb 9 16:40:26 1995

Well, coming from the bustling metropolis of Jonesboro, Arkansas AND
being a bio major, I think I can answer the question. It is really
highly unlikely that you will get a chicken embryo b/c there are no
roosters at a chicken egg farm. No daddy, no baby. I guess if a band of
renegade roosters suddenly stormed the farm and began raping and
pillaging the grounds your might get a fetus or two.

Here's another random note...I'm going dancing this weekend! Remission
is incredible.

Dave note...hmmm...do you think the band would find it in their hearts to
play down here in Chapel Thrill if I offered up a sorority house or two
for them to ummm...pillage, while they were here? I'm sure if Satellite
was playing nonstop and booze was aplenty, there wouldn't be too much
complaining....(that was evil and stereotypical, but I just finished a
tutoring session for a bunch of tri-delts, and my outlook is a bit skewed.

Hey everyone
I'm feeling lonely here in the midwest
I have a question for all of you eastern people (which seems to be the
majority)
What size places does DMB usually play out there?
it seems like they are rather large (for them anyways but now with this
MTV thing I don't know)
i'm new to this net, not to DMB though :)
I've always seen them with about 100 people at a small club/bar place
i've just been curious after listening in silently on the stuff going on here
I like it....

If you want to get back to the anonymous show stage, come to Ann Arbor
for DMB...kinda far though I guess.

Although we are approaching that scary large venue stage...at least the
show in March is still gen. adm.

sorry it seems that I've forgotten how to use punctuation

everyone's favorite says...

keith also asked today.
 'a snell is a..what? benny?
 a quiet snail, or something'
schnell. german for fast.
which is different thatn snail.. which ais a slow organism with a shell..
not a turtle. that's a dancing nancy.
do not be confused!!!

see, this is proof that the goddess doesn't know everything.

a snell is a really slow snail. even slower than the others.
he's introverted.
slightly depressed,
but basically he moves slower because he just does.
he chugs along the way he wants.
look it up! you won't find it, but it's there.

i wasn't going to bring this up, but since clare had to contraDICT me!!!
well, we can have none of that.

hippie music. and every band has the word ska in their name. like skadanks

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Thu Feb 9 18:41:52 1995

Ska originated in the 60's, it's the predecessor to reggae. You can't explain
it, but you'll recognize it if you hear it. Good party music. I wouldn't
classify everything as ska, although they used to play it alot, they've gotten
away from that sound lately. But you can still hear the influence.

Does anybody remember the show "Lancelot Link"? It was a detective show
featuring orangatangs(sp?) I'm not talkin' cartoon either, these were bona
fide apes, alldressed up. I betcha clare used to watch this show!:)

"That's like when your makin' love with your girlfriend and the dog comes up
and licks yer balls."
-"Oh, honey, how'd you do that?"
"I gotta..I gotta tongue in my butt"

Only lancelot and people with tongues in their butts may smoke in my message.
Well, on second thought, maybe not people with tongusd in their butts. Where's

Well folks, I don't know if anybody else posted about the 2/8 show yet, but
if they did you can ignore this. For those of you interested, I have the set
One Sweet, Two-step, Ants, Nancies, Pay for, Rhyme, Jimi, Satellite,

I was rather surprised when I picked up the tickets I had ordered because the
lady told me I had FRONT ROW SEATS! I guess you can say it started off the
night right.
I also have to diagree with most people, because I was rather impressed with
the Ugly Americans. I think you guys ripped them a part before you even gave
them a chance. They even brought Boyd out to jam with them. And for those of
you who have seen them already, I caught a comb! Whew!
It was good to hear Two-step but I noticed that besides my friends and I,
nobody knew what was going on. I was also really disappointed when Satellite
came on and the crowd (of mostly girls) went crazy. The girl next to me says
" I could go in my room and just put this on repeat play and listen to it all
day long" AGHH! NO CROWD SURFERS!
Also talked with Carter after the show and he said that he is really excited
about playing with the RSO. He said they were going to play a few by
themselves as is the RSO. He was really cool about the whole thing. Says he
can't wait to see everyone there. That's all for
now................................. Until the 15th. Oh yeah, I also got
Dave's guitar pic. I love souveniers.

Hey, does anyone have a copy of the Nashville 328 show last
October/November? I really need a GOOD copy of this if it floating around.
Also, second on my wishlist is a good copy of the Knoxville show on Nov. 11
I believe.
Off hand, I have a pretty good Nov. 3 of 1992 tape that has the
following...

I also have a bootleg of a potpurri so to speak of various studio outtakes.

Any help is appreciated. Also, how do I get on the HORDE.NET?
Thanks....Jeff

I didn't put much thought into it last night, except of course that Bluewater
_must_ follow Seek up, the loud yet soothing cymbalsat the end of SU-Blue
water would just do it for me.

no. this is still wrong. the correct order is seek up-- minarets--
blue water.

blue water _has_ to follow minarets. it is the will of bagby's buddha.
and i'm simply not going to listen to anything after hearing blue
water with the richmond symphony, so nothing else must follow. so
it has to be at the very end and it has to be in the order.

thus he said.

"Boofy" may not be fun to type 110 times, but it's still fun to say!:)
Boofy, Boofy, Boofy!!!!!!

why do ya think i wrote a song called boofy's boots? :)

similarities. and ya'll.

nebulous@panix.com Thu Feb 9 19:34:23 1995

a week or two ago i posted about musical similarities in the chorus of best
of & the beatles while my guitar gently weeps... believe it or not, i got 3
or 4 enthusiastic responses from that... anyways, i thought i'd do some
casual analyzing of the entire song structure...

the only way i still know while my guitar gently weeps is that i learned it
a few years ago to play at a cheesy lil dance party as sort of a change of
pace. i digress. the point is, it's a coincidence that i know this song
sinc i don't like the beatles..

anyways...

the song.

the general coolness factor of both of these songs is measured in the Am
-- A tonality change that occurs between e verse and the chorus. in this,
the songs are identical.

the verse.

while my guitar... Am Am/G D/F# F Am Am/G D E

best of what's.... Am C F D C Am F D

the difference here is that in the beatles tune, the chord structure
revolves around a descending bassline. also, wmggw is EXTREMELY similar to
the superawesome classic zep tune babe i'm gonna leave you. leading into
the chorus, wmggw uses a more convential V chord...

the chorus.

whiel my guitar... A C#m F#m C#m Bm Bm E (with bass walk up of E, F#,
G#, A

best of what's... A C#m F#m A/C# D A E (with bass walk up of E, G#
leading...)

the similarities here are much more pronounced, in fact the progression is
almost exactly the same. The first true difference is at the C#m & A/C#,
but in fact there is only one note different between those two chords. Bm
is the relative minor of D... Bm and A aren't really reltaed, but that's
the only real deviation from the original...

the mood.

well, best of is a happy happy song..

and oh yeah, simple (the bestest new phish song) & halloween are really similar.

simple... g-----------2-----

hween... d---3----9--10----

wow... have you ever seen that sandblast show? they're playing luscious
jackson on it?! daughters of the kaos?! well, whatever, keep on rockin it
ya'll.......

what is happening to me. i've nver said ya'll before in my life.

'bart, don't draw on your fathers skull.'

just another memo from the cellar,

Well, coming from the bustling metropolis of Jonesboro, Arkansas AND
being a bio major, I think I can answer the question. It is really
highly unlikely that you will get a chicken embryo b/c there are no

Three Chinese Torture Tests (fwd)

ekimberl@du.edu Thu Feb 9 20:34:04 1995

From KW1247%ALBNYVMS.BITNET@cmsa.Berkeley.EDU Mon Feb 6 19:06:56 1995

A

A man is out in the Chinese wilderness and he's
hopelessly lost. It's been nearly three weeks since he's eaten anything
besides what he could forage and he's been reduced to sleeping in caves
and under trees.

One afternoon he comes upon an old mansion in the woods.
It has vines covering most of it and the man can't see any other
buildings in the area. However, he sees smoke coming out of the
chimney implying someone is home.

He knocks on the door and an old man answers, with a
beard almost down to the ground. The old man squints his eyes
and says "What do you want?"

The man says "I've been lost for the past three weeks
and haven't had a decent meal or sleep since that time. I would
be most gracious if I could have a meal and sleep in your house
for tonight"

The old Chinese man says "I'll let you come in on one

The man, exhausted and hungry readily agrees, saying "I
promise I won't cause you any trouble. I'll be on my way
tommorrow morning"

The old Chinese man counters "Ok, but if I do catch you
then I'll give you the three worst chinese torture tests ever
known to man."

"Ok, Ok" the man said as he entered the old house.
Besides, he thought to himself, what kind of woman would live
out in the wilderness all her life?

Well, that night, when the man came down to eat (after
showering), he saw how beautiful the grandaughter was. She was
an absolute pearl, and while he had only been lost three weeks,
it had been many, many months without companionship. And the girl
had only seen the occasional monk besides her grandfather and
well, they both couldn't keep their eyes off each other
throughout the meal.

That night, the man snuck into the girls' bedroom and
they had quite a time, but had kept the noise down to a minimum.
The man crept back to his room later that night thinking to
himself, "Any three torture tests would be worth it after that
experience."

Well, the next morning the man awoke to a heavy weight
on his chest. He opened his eyes and there was this huge rock on
his chest. On the rock was a sign saying "1st Chinese torture

"What a lame torture test" the man thought to himself as
he got up and walked over to the window. He opened the shutter
and threw the rock out. On the backside of the rock is another
testicle".

The man, seeing the rock was too far out the window to
be grabbed, jumps out the window after the rock. Outside the window is a
bedpost".

Re: usent....

ddevito@ytrium.helios.nd.edu Thu Feb 9 21:49:00 1995

just to inform, if we do create a usenet and the posts to that usenet
are cross posted here, i'll be happy to stand up and say that i don't
have time for that kind of traffic.

more or less, i'll be forced into leaving this net, because i barely
have enough time for it now. anybody else agree?

YES! I DO! I DO! I DO!

Reasons? There are several. May I cite Phish.net as my # 1 example?
Usenet is cool, but for people who have other things to do besides
sort through endless newbie questions (Get the FAQ!) and dorks posting
flame-bait (and believe me, there will be PLENTY of flame-baiting if
we go USENET), it is not conducive to productive emailing sessions
or studying.

Just MHO. Your mileage may vary.

technically i still read phish.net, but what it comes down to is that i
sign up for trees now... (to expand my dat collection yunno? because not
everyone can be a tennessee dat god like keith and go DD)... and a dmb
newsgroup, well, it would suck.

i go to tennessee only about once or twice a year....
that's why im an _illusive_ ex-new mexico
dat god.....didnt we talk about this before?

but i was just thinking about how much usenet
newsgroup thingy would be a drag.......

and...it would really be a drag...........

49,000,000,000,000 posts a day
aint for me
(hahaha even though im

nothing in general

wmartin@s850.mwc.edu Thu Feb 9 22:31:17 1995

Hey there all, I am a new Davenetter so bear with. I think you all need
to cut down on the 90210 shit. It might be agood show but, c'mon! This
is a little ridiculous. Tiffini Amber-What's her name DID get a boob
job, Kelly will sleep the crip but fall off the bed during sex and break
her neck, becoming a veggie herself. It is possible and it will happen.
Trust me.... I have my sources.

Helen Hunt is a goddess. Meg Ryan would kick her ass in bed though.
Rachel from Friends is also up there. We can't leave out Jenny Jones
though (Kev, that's for you).

Dave is cool but I must plug some other rockin' bands. My good Pal Shaft
has instructed me to do so, so you csan kick his ass for this nonDave
talk that will ensue here. Two words....Gibb Droll!!! The man wails on
guitar like no one else. He is the next guitar God in the making. He
will be playing with the great bluesman Buddy Guy for the next coulpe of
months. Anybody lucky enough to catcha show by all means go and try to
tape it. Steve, the sound guy,is a really cool guy and will usually let
you hook right up. Another up and coming band is 6 Foot 7, they are from
the DC area and are a really rockin' good time. They played here on
campus a couple of weeks ago and had the same effect that Dave's first
two CD's had.....They don't come off of my CD changer. Good stuff.
Check them out if given the chance.

Kev....I talked to that 'Ho Joanna today and she said that she was goinhg
to see Blue Miracle and I asked her to try and tape it for me. She said
she would but I don't think so. She had that spiteful look in her eye.
What a bitch. We'll see.

Never go and see a band called Dismemberment Plan or Sore Losers. Both
are from the DC area and are playing on campus tonight and they both
suck. Just a tip from your uncle Tug.

That's it from Fredericksburg. To appease all of you Daveheads out
there..."I love the DMB....please send me all tapes that are out there in
the world. I can't get enough of this shit." Just kidding. Don't want
any tapes :. Send your love instead.

In the immortal words of Eric from the Grind...."Peace out" from
somewhere in the USA.

Tug, how much did you want to sell your deck for? I'm in the mood to go tape
Gibb, since no one else seems to be doing so.

big league chew is not big league chew unless it is big league chew.
3-23-93 is a show. big league chew is a bagby. they are not to
be mistaken for each other. if you happen to have 3-23-93, it can
become big league chew, but not until you have the correct setlist.
don't worry, i'll be posting it soon. very soon. i keep forgetting.

right now i have a buzz though, and i have a newscast to give in
an hour. that's bad. don't let the fcc see that sentence. that
would be worse.

ska and then no more

CJACOBS@smith.smith.edu Thu Feb 9 23:00:17 1995

ska, to me, (god this feels like an essay class. "what does ska mean to you?"
"how did ska spend its summer vacation?") is a lovely mix of reggae and
polka. yes, it can be done. and people listen to it and wear black and
white and checkered things and robert palmer skinny black ties and the girls
wear suspenders and we jump around (or they jump around) and get sweaty and
it is a trip. esp. the midwestern skathing--american skathic, it's called.

Hi All,

Has anyone heard of a band out of Vermont called Percy Hill. A guy
at school has really gotten me into them this year. They sound like
a mix between the Allman Brothers and Phish. They also kick all
kinds of ass and jam like you couldn't believe. If anyone has any
comments or further information on the band, I would appreciate it.

Re: Time for a USENET group

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Fri Feb 10 04:26:49 1995

This debate will never go away. In fact it does not even need a consensus on
this listserver for it to get done. All it needs is a mear 300 or so votes.
If we wanted a USENET group we would have no problem at all. In fact Michael
Witt (mwitt@opie.bgsu.edu) has already paved the way for it to be done when he
process and he could provide all the advice on how to get it done. This list
is much more popular than theirs and would have no problem at all. It would

rec.music.artists.dave-matthews

The reason most people would prefer a usenet group is because of the already
low signal to noise ratio. There are just way to many posts on this group.
I got 3 digests in the mail today for the DMB group. There were a total of 78
messages in one day. That was more than rec.music.gdead and rec.music.phish
let alone all the other groups I looked at like rec.crafts.brewing. I read the
digests by pressing return as many times as it takes to get to the bottom
without stopping...I can read fast enough on a 2400bps modem to see if anything
interesting is going on. On a usenet group I just look at the subject headings
and decide if I want to read anything. If you don't have a newsreader then
this may be different since it will have to come digestified anyway.

There are some good and bad sides to the personal/comunal nature of the group.
Sometimes it is interesting to read about the daily affairs of the
dmb.net.celebs, but on most occasions I don't want to bother with it. The
dmb.net.celebs love this place and post all the time...they will be the most
resistent to a usenet group. The rank and file on here (the other 725 people)
may see it differently. A usenet group would destroy the "personal posts" that
we have now...you just cannot post that kind of stuff on a usenet group without
pissing people off. USENET groups are more bland, deal with things like tapes,
shows, trades, etc. You also have to face the flamebait and the idiots who
think they should respond. I lurk the phish.net because I find it amusing, and
almost every other post is a tape trade post. The gdead.net is much less
focused on such activities. If the DMB group went to usenet it would become
more like phish.net I am afraid.

1) You have a newsreader and just have to use the arrow keys to look at subject
headings (you do not have to read every post).
2) You are basically here to find out cool shit about DMB. You want the tour
dates, some occasional tape trades, some tape trees, and other important info.
You do not need to read about tape IDs, what someone ate for dinner, or what
their dream was about last night (because you can skip it in a usenet group).
3) If reading 70+ messages a day is not your idea of time well spent.

1) You do not have a newsreader and all groups have to come digestified no
matter what it is. (this will decrease the S/N ratio)
2) If you like the "smaller" feel of this group and enjoy rambling interesting
posts by people who love DMB.
3) DMB.net.celebs in general because like all things...what was once our own,
small group from VA is now a big time music group that is getting way to big.
Likewise, what was once a small group of devote DMB fans on a small listserver
is now maintaing 700+ people and 70 posts or more a day.

Wow. I bet I piss some people off with this post after looking at it. Oh
well, I'm just trying to lay out all the issues as I see them. I am not trying
to put down net.celebs...just making the observation that of course you all
do not want a usenet group (it all makes sense).

As I mentioned before if we want a newsgroup we will not have a problem. The
problem is that if we go ahead without full support we will divide ourselves.
My vote is that we should wait this out. Wait until the net.celebs agree that
this is what should be done. The problem is that what they often consider
interesting posts others consider noise.

Peace!

Eric

it was requested several times of me

but it wont contain all this crap........
these words.....only the structure itself.......

the upper level branches (me and catherine hobbs)
will be getting in touch with our kids
soon enough........be patient.............

and i owe catherine hobbs big.....without
her, i would have about 23 children for this tree......
because, since the show is coming from analogue masters, i want
to preserve clarity...yanno.....all that.....

*if you dont know how to read a tree, then
check the end of this message, after
the structure......a short explaination will follow.........

i get enough people asking what trees are,
that i'm gonna explain it...........

Wake Forest, NoCar........
i guess you'll all need two
are taking the blanks+post route, go
get 'em

and this was relatively hard to do because
the tree was pre-existing........every effort
was made to keep the geographical proximity
at short distances between parents and leavs
but, at times, this was virtually impossible

as was fulfilling _everyone's_ requests,
but believe me, i did try........

Re: *NOT* Time for a USENET group (was something else)

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Fri Feb 10 05:54:16 1995

If we wanted a USENET group we would have no problem at all.

it makes me think of those old sayings
we encountered in mid-school health class.......
yanno........
see?..........

that's horseshit, because to be successful at
what you do, you have to realize some of the
stipulations surrounding what you are doing........

eric...i'm not jumping on your case, but...seriously

religiously read the phish.net for a year....
i dont know if that can sanely be done..........

and the last time i said that, the response was
'well, no one reads ALL of the phish posts'
and *that's* the other difference b/w minarets and
phish.net.......there, they dont care....they skip a lot
of shit......and it's so damn big, anyway........
see, with this net....people dont read *everything*
but some try to read everything meaningful.....

one thing i noticed......it's fucking irritating
to wade through all those retarded posts to find
interesting shit....so people stop

just stop........and those of us who dont want
just stop
would never be in favour of a news group, because
whether we want to, or not, stopping wading through
all the posts is inevitable when you get big enough........

and it's _getting_ irritating....but it's still fun
a usenet group would be just the thing to
push a lot of us to our limits........

maybe that's just a part of the whole 'dmb getting big'
thing
but when we can thwart the efforts of others to
take something away from us, then i, for one,
will at least be against it

and if you think you are gonna do it, then do it
but know what you are getting into

you'll make a lot of people happy and you'll
piss a lot of people off.........

benny, dominic, rick and myself are not the only
ones that will be outta here.........

this debate's insane anyway, and certianly
doesnt need to be re-hashed AGAIN

and i seriously doubt you'll find 300 people
in favour of usegroups, on this net.........

remember, there's only about 775 people here
and they dont all vote.......

rec.music.artists.dave-matthews

because (almost solely) of the phish.net
i think i got about 13 digests today...........
which is rediculous.....
totally rediculous......

an awful lot of those 725 or so simply
don't care.........

plus, there's another thing to consider.........
if you get the messages undigestified, then
look.......
all i do is look at the subject headings anyway.......
so it clogs up your email account temporarily........
erase the messages with the subjects you dont like,
and get on with it......

that's no different from a usegroup, in one sense.......

As I mentioned before if we want a newsgroup we will not have a problem.

if we go ahead without full support we will divide ourselves.
ok........unfortunately, i doubt you'll ever get full support
(sorry)

My vote is that we should wait this out. Wait until the net.celebs agree that
this is what should be done.

i think a LOT of people arent convinced, yet......
and i know someone has a ways to go
before i'm convinced......

and not meant to piss anyone off.........
just a more realistic depiction of the way i see it

molly@ctg1.com Fri Feb 10 09:55:48 1995

Hey--

I went to my first DMB concert last Sat. at the Orpheum and damn, I enjoyed
it, despite the teenaged girls looking for pot then getting picked up
outside, despite the singing along to Satellite. It was one of the most rad
concerts I've ever seen. My question is, how much worse is it now really?
Semi-obtuse question for this bunch of OldTimers but better than How did I
which is embarassing.

Thanks everyone who made DMB tapes for me, when I was a newbie, which I
still prolly am until I get em. This is the only music .net I like, and
I've seen a lot in the two months I've had access to the internet. people
really are friendly and keith really was nice to explain things and i bet
clare could write some rad poetry.

Also I used to have this, but in an effort to Keep My Mailbox Clean and Tidy
(I like the word tidy) I tossed it far far away. Does anyone know Hootie
and the Blowfish tour dates for the spring, if any, where applicable, all
necessary restrictions apply?

Molly

Atlanta/general dave

gt0082c@prism.gatech.edu Fri Feb 10 10:12:51 1995

Not to say that Dave is starting an army in Atlanta.
But.. does anyone know if he is coing back down here, or for that matter
to any of the states that touch Georgia?

Secondly anyone in Atlanta Saturday night should come see

I'm not sure when they are starting but they should play a long time into
the night. PS a pre-party gathering will occur at my house

1090 State St. The keg will be tapped at three.

The band will be as I understand hanging out here so drop by.

On another note Hello Eppy, to others he went to high school with me
and I saw a post of his up on minarets the other day. Give me a reply.

Oh yeah , if you want directions give me an e-mail
All replies should have SWAG in the subject so that I
can read them quickly while I'm browsing thru all these messages.
Low be the man (or woman) who skips a day checking his e-mail

As always, I am the Swag.

hmmm...i would beg to differ...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Feb 10 10:17:34 1995

I guess I'm really drunk )THat happens when you finish a 22 page lab)
but I thought since I was thinking of dave tonight that I would post an
ideal setlist for no other reason than I'd like to accompany him with it...

#36
recenlty
Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors
drive in/drive out
help mysielf
any noise/anti noise
so much 2 say
tripping billies
dancing with nancies
warehouse
sweet home-ants
halloween
cry freedom
best of whats around
minarets
tangerine
jimi
lover lay down
after her
angel
watchtower
seek up

hmmm... i think this setlist has a lot of flaws. but maybe i'm being

the biggest problem with the one above is that it's too disjointed.
ants--halloween--cry freedom? that might be a bit difficult to
listen to.
set I

#36--
doobie thing--
granny
angel
warehouse--
minarets--
blue water--
seek up

set II
heathcliff's
so much to say
jimi thing
anti-noise--
(full band comes out during anti-noise)--
say goobye
cry freedom
typical situation--
dancing nancies
watchtower }with no time between these
drive in, drive out-- } two songs
extended drum solo--
halloween

tangerine (acoustic)
jimi thing (again, full band)
get in line
tripping billies (with extended screaming intro)

christmas song
lover lay down

an even better idea is a two night stand at the fox in atlanta, with
the first setlist being friday night, and my setlist being saturday
night. :)

ok mr. 'i-will-not-be-contradicted' sterling.
let me stand to contradict you, again.
(do i have to teach you everything?)

you're wrong about the snell thing.
and i was, definitely right about the 'schnell' thing..
(i also never did say what snell was..
but bite your ass, i'm gettin ready to)

there are actually two meaning's to 'snell'.
one is cheifly from scottish descent., and it means
which contradicts your snail thingy.
personally, you silly fozzy bear...,
the other meaning is something about
a short gut line by which a fishhook is attached
to a longer line..

slow snail, heh?
you're so silly.....

my first post) I am very interested in gathering more DaMaBa
bootlegs. I have 3 from friends at school(thanks Che and Kev)
but really would like more. I am particularly interested in
getting my hands on ANY shows from in or around Washington DC/
Baltimore -- anything from The Bayou, Hammerjacks, Lisner, etc.
I am also desperately seeking two shows -- Hampden-Sydney
Homecoming '93 concert(it was one of my first) and Dave with
Tim Reynolds at The Birchmere in Alexandria,Va(sentimental
reasons) I would fall down on my knees and worship at the
feet of anyone who could get me these shows. If anyone
could help me out, please get back to me.

Silly me, I thought this was a DMB tour...

today, and the words "Dave" "Matthews" or "Band" are not even on the
ticket. What the hell?? I thought DMB was headlining this tour, not Fat
Brain Losers. Have BHT been headlining the other shows??... maybe I'm
just misinformed, but I thought it was the other way around.
see dave sooner (ok, about 2 hours only) and I'm not in any way obligated
to sit through BHT. Still, I remember the days only a few months back
when DMB headlined for Rusted Root... and tickets were less than half the
price they are no. Oh woe are us...
