stand. Minarets will continue without the people who go to a newsgroup...
What do you guys think happens in the summer? All the people who are just in
school [ like me ] will go away for a few months and the rest are the core of
minarets, the so called "net.dmb.celebs" or the collective brain trust here.
But you too can be a part of that. We can all participate, that's what makes
email so nice. I don't have newsgroups here at Davidson and we're not likely
to ever get a newsreader, our gpa's would drop too much. But what makes an
email format nice, is just abou everyone with a net connection can be in on
this... The net effect will be to reduce the traffic on the
rec.music.artists.dmb or whatever the heck it'll be.... I don't know about the
rest of you, but I'll stay right here.

fans [ reference to Red Lenses if you're interested ]. A friend of mine at
home had newsgroup access and we looked at alt.music.rush for a while. It
simply is really dry, and not only that, but people post stupid shit, not like
eric ramblings which oftenn have a point and a reverse tape grovel at the end.
it's more like, Hey, I bet Geddy's going to go solo or Neil's got leukemia b/c
I saw him and he was bald... Well sure, he's bald while on tour b/c he works
so damn hard on that HUGGGGE drum kit, but he hasn't had nor is likely to have
leukemia, and geddy's with family for a couple of years, just had another son
with his wife... The point being, the premise of moving to a newsgroup will
alienate the reasonable among us and will prevent others from participating.
If you want to get rid of extraneous post, undigestify and clean out your
mailbox. Yeah, we can comprimise and try to make our posts more in line with
our subjects [ can we try this?] and as the fervor for Dave as Buzz man wanes
[ which I hope it will to a degree, more later on that], fewer people will
post and we will again have more trade/tree/tour posts, and more interaction
too...

read every blessed word on this mailing list. Why? B/c I might find someone
I know, or want to know, or want to trade wtih, or who might know me or know
someone who knows me, or be able to acquire that magic tape that hits you
right in the center of your chest the way my first everything show did. There
are probably lots of us like that. Even if I got on the r.m.a.dmb I prolly
wouldn't read it all and then newbies might miss an offer I would've otherwise
made. If you alienate the core group, and then probably the close fringe,
like me and some others, you're going to lose the tapes you so desperately
want and the information that is supposed to be the purpose of the newsgroup's
formation...

If you really want a newsgroup, then go do it, b/c I can't stop you, nor can
really anyone else, but you'll likely find it to be a lonely, flame-infested,
faceless, void. If you really want one, test your theory, call for a full
minarets vote. I doubt you'll get more than 100 responses total and most will
be from the core posters, who simply do not want the newsgroup. The rest
minarets, I'll wager, doesn't really mind wading through some posts, and those
that don't stay informed... It's like we said. You want tourdates, a FAQ, and
some trees and maybe some trades, use Hordenet and netspace.org and you've got
all the above. But you want people with names, faces, lives, and most
importantly, the music, which is what brings us together, and shouldn't be
what drives us apart, then you're not going to have a newsgroup... It simply
won't happen...

give a flying shit unless you're my friend, whether I've pissed you off or
not. One of my mentors in my fraternity, has a habit of pissing me off and
teaching me something in the action... So if I've offended, this is how I
feel, and I can't apoligize for my thoughts.

tired real quick of not being able to be close as in comfortable with his
audience... I somehow doubt Dave wanted to see crowd surfers, 14 year old
girls screaming Satellite, and beggin for the green stuff. They will do
things their oen way, they will make more music on RCA's label but only on
their terms. No more overproduced videos, no more please put ants on a 12th
album, b/c it sells. They will write more stuff, i suspect he has, but like
some bands, just won't play it till it's ready. [ A farm jam of everything's
comes to mind] We will see this net get a little bigger as more of the mtv
people come here, but most don't know we exist... A newsgroup would likely
ruin that, incidentally. So, I guess, we should thank our luck that we are
still here and still discuss things, and act somewhat rationally, and not with
heated emotion, though at times, we resort to flames. At any rate, thanks for
listening...

the net. If you made it this far, you've probably already drained an entire
bowl of your favorite tobacco, so have a cigar and a cognac and enjoy the
afternoon... Peace, Will

Rutabega Demo's

cypherc@cleo.bc.edu Fri Feb 10 15:16:11 1995

Hey all,
I just got the Rutabega Demo tape the other day and was wondering about its origins. When and
where was it recorded? Was this before Dave got the band together, and, if so, is it the demo
tape of songs mentioned in the FAQ that Dave showed to the boys to get them to join the band?

Help with a date

jag1@cornell.edu Fri Feb 10 15:17:38 1995

I have a tape from Ziggy's in North Carolina, but no idea of when it was.
I'm not even sure if it's all actually the same show, though I think it
was. First three are Dave solo

Any Noise-Anti-Noise
BOWA
Watchtower
Angel
Tripping Billies
OSW
Jane Likes
Lie in Our Graves
Typical Situation
Satellite
Recently (w/cool intro)
Dancing Nancies
Haloween
Granny

Oh, fuck!!!!!!! The tape just got eaten! Swear to God. My friend has a
copy, but one of my decks is FUCKED. First time that's happened with this
deck. Sorry for my rambling. Still curious about the date. No usenet
please.

Folks,
my favorite song of theirs, Let Her Cry. It was really impressive. They even
managed to get in most of the song even though Letterman only lets them play
so long. Maybe Popper will sit in when Dave comes on later in the month.

I owe tapes to. I played around yesterday with the Web site and I think we
should all thank Ben Tanen and the rest involved for doing a real good job
on that. The pictures are really cool!!! Well, I got to go and get to
business but I will see you all later.

it's this weird thing they worked out with the bht people...like, once they
cross some invisible river between the east coast and the midwest, all of a
sudden, bht is headlining. one promoter boy said that bht is more popular
west of, oh i don't know, the mississippi, whereas no one gives two shits
about them on the atlantic coast. the problem is, is that chicago is east

 A friend of mine went to a show in boulder, co called FINA or PHINA or
 something like that. she said it was absolutely amazing . . . the show
 lasted like 8 hours or something on the diag. bands like the samples, dmb,
 winebottles, and many many more. I would really like a copy of this concert.

 andrew

FINA stands for Fun In the Nuclear Age, and is a FREE show put on by the
student council each spring here at CU Boulder. It is a big festival
that has lots of environmental booths set up and stuff. The music starts
about noon (I think) and last untill dark. For all I know DMB never
played, I am sure not in the last two years, and I doubt before that, but
the last few years highlights have been Samples, Leftover Salmon, Acoustic
info on tapers.

p.s.  It is finally
snowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(hey, those !!!!! ARE pretty fun :-)

The first 5 or so poeple (not neccessarily newbies, but that would be
best) that e-mail me with the names of the two main characters in Spies
Like Us will be declaered the victors and therefore be entitled to a
couple of shows from my meager collection.

That's all, I mean it.

 I was wondering, if anyone has ever thought of making a tape (and
 maybe treeing it) of all the different versions of watchtower. Just
 off the top of my head, there's DMB, Dylan, Hendrix, the Dead, Phish
 (they did it with DMB 4/21/94), etc. A compilation like that would
 be really phat, and be cool to listen to the whole way through. At
 least I think so...

Re: DAVE IS HUGE! GOOD!

sctm@vt.edu Fri Feb 10 16:24:17 1995

         One thing disturbs me. There seems to be a general,
         pervasive fear that Dave will sell out. Dave has become
         successful to a degree that seems very hard to reconcile with
         the cool band we used to see at Trax every week. Videos,
         national tours, TV, $$$. These things are frightening to
         fans who would like to keep the band as they were.

         Wishing for DMB as they were is selfish and a bit snobby.
         Be happy that the band we discovered and grew to love has
         gotten the same reaction from the public in general!

         It is wrong to deride newer fans who do not enjoy Dave in
         ways to which older fans have become accustomed. Moshing
         and crowd surfing is over the limit. Dave is not The
         Offspring and never will be, no matter who likes him.

Uhhh,  OK
what we mean when some of us say Dave sold out. His large fan base is cool,
kids go because it's the cool thing to do, and not for the music. What we
mean by selling out, is the setlists, the attitudes. Dave used to play
songs that meant something to him, he played lot's of stuff, experimenting
and having fun. Now he's playing songs off the CD, he's playing them the
same way every show with out goofing around and being creative like the old
days. That's what we are afraid of. That Dave is going for the money. And
it's not wrong to deride fans that have come to know Dave in ways in which
older fans have become accustomed. Old fans know Dave for his cool music
and is cool self, if newer fans like him for anything but his music and
self than I say deride the hell out of them!!! Go get 'em tiger!!!
setlists have been getting better! Anyone else notice this trend? It's
cool. Bring back Blue Water, Desperate Hours, and Drive In/Drive Out with
the cool siren thingamajigy, and I will drop out of school and just follow
the DMB everywhere.

accusing people of selling out is the only way to sell out...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Feb 10 17:41:00 1995

What sucks is when young kids, old kids, drunk
kids go because it's the cool thing to do, and not for the music.
i've known people like this in my life. don't hold it against them.
some people genuinely do not know how to judge music, simply because
they don't understand music, and they don't know how to appreciate it
they look to us (and unfortunately, mtv) to find out what's cool. some
people need to follow other people. it's just the way they are.

songs that meant something to him,
are you trying to say these songs don't mean anything to him? then
why isn't he playing spotlight. people love that song. or drive in,
drive out, which could easily be put on the same level as halloween
and r&r

and having fun. Now he's playing songs off the CD, he's playing them the
same way every show with out goofing around and being creative like the old
days.
i've seen a few posts here talking about how good the jimi thing or
two step was.
at the same time, dave is not a virtuoso. he's definitely a good
player and a good songwriter, but he can't just spit out any song
he wants to, any time he wants to. also, a point i've made here at
least a dozen times....in any extensive jam, aside from #36 where dave
gets to play the same thing over and over again for 7 minutes, dave
could very well put his guitar down and watch, and the song would sound
the same. i've seen enough of them to know. it's always been my
theory that dave got sick of not being able to do anything while
leroi goes off for 10 minutes. i'm sure every band experimented when
they were tiny. i bet there's some shows of the-artist-formerly-known-
as-prince that make people go "what the fuck..."

cool. Bring back Blue Water, Desperate Hours, and Drive In/Drive Out with
the cool siren thingamajigy,  and
I will drop out of school and just follow
the DMB everywhere.
regardless of whether dave is going for the money, do you really think
he's the kind of guy who wants people following him everywhere? not
everyone is cut out for that, and personally, i don't think dave is.

neato setlists, my guitar teacher the famous rocker-star, no sleep

nebulous@panix.com Fri Feb 10 23:33:19 1995

....all these dream setlist things got me thinking... and i wa sthinking
that what dave should do these days is that... well, bring back some solo
shit. not like at every show, but think about it...

every few shows, just come out first, chill, play a few tunes.....

laid back... like snoop... heh heh... anyways, like come out, do a jammin

rhyme and reason

maybe toss in satellite to get it out of the way... and then this keith guy
(who is he anyway? i don't know!) tell sme that he DID that?!?!?! on the
nye run?

2 step? and osw intro? what is this? really?!? willy?

so anyways. since many of you care deeply in your heartofhearts, my dream
setlist...

1st of all, 2 fucking sets...

1...
(solo)
granny
r&r (random lyrics, no vains and veins crapo)
cry freedom
osw intro (w/ band members coming on one by one until
osw (fast fast fast!!)
what would you say (with the notsoold but long since forgotten jammy with
david craziness)
lie in our graves
help myself

2...
minarets--
blue water
#36
satellite (as fast as humanly possible)
warehouse (w/ whatever crazy jam i heard in boofy's car even if it was
planned out)

this is where peter comes back out 1 last time
jimi thing
2 step
spotlight
halloween

yes.................. this will happen.... anyway, i'm really just starting
to look
forward

to the roseland shows less & less... i understand that many people will
enjoy the shows,
and that is totallyc ool with me as long as you enjoy it for the music and
not some
preconceived notion of what a good time is supposed to be...

lido cookies rock man.. i think we'll have them at my wedding. sound
good?... i thought so.

ben tanen actually knows who my guitar teacher is?!?! that's so weird. i've
been seeing him for 5 years. yes that's right since i was 11 years old.
wow.. anyway, he teaches/taught lou reed,
so somehow tanen heard it on some radio show with jules shear (my guitar
teacher plays
in jules' band)..

okay enough wasting of your time. i'm sort of concerned with the new term
net.celebs... because
if that is supposed to be anyway that posts a lot (um me? eek), well that's
a pretty
phony distinction of a celebrity..... shit i can't even give my music away

... night night all ... especially keith who really needs some fucking
sleep/!?!?! i hope
you all realize taht keith spends evenings from 4-7 am writing trees for
ya'll (there it is again!!!)... keep that in mind...

cancerbands first gig has been moved up to july of 97. :)

St.Patty's in Chicago

sundtde@iac.net Sat Feb 11 01:35:22 1995

I hope a bunch of minareters snatched up the tickets for the March 17 show
in Chicago. I'm bummed to hear that DMB will not be closing the show but,
oh well... BHT has kinda been a disapointment since Sister Sweetly was
released. I saw them right after the relase of Midnight Radio and they
were awesome but I think they've lost a little bit of the passion which was
on this album and Another Mayberry(best BHT album by far).
Anyway, sorry about the non DMB content, I was wondering if there would be
any interest in a net gathering of any sort before the show. I know this
might be a little premature but I just was wondering how many people are
going to the show... Being a relative newbie to minarets I haven't seen
any notice of midwest DMB net gatherings. If anyone has any interest reply
to this post or e-mail me. Thanks.....

Irving Plaza shows

andynyc@panix.com Sat Feb 11 01:51:59 1995

Please help!!

I just received two tapes...Dave & Tim from 7/11/94, and DMB Irving Plaza
from "July 1994"....(exact date??)

Does anyone know the location of these shows(exactly, like state, etc.)
and anyone who has the setlists, would you please jot them down shorthand
for me to save you time!!

I have both ticket stubs here in front of me. The first show was recorded
Thursday, July 28, 1994, 9:00pm start (well, not exactly) at Irving Plaza,
17 Irving Place, (just off 3rd Ave. at 15th St.), New York City. Tickets
were Gen Adm and cost $11.50.

The second show was on Monday, November 7, 1994, 8:30pm, also at Irving
Plaza. This show was Dave and Tim only, with Shannon Worrell opening.
Tickets were up to $15.50 each. (BTW, TicketMaster's service charge
also went up from $3.00 in July to $4.75 in November for the same venue.)

These are the last two shows Dave and DMB played at Irving Plaza. The
band played NYC in late September 1994 but that was at Roseland Ballroom.

Seeing this post made me reminiscent... both shows, in different ways,
were fantastic. Michael, I'd love to get these shows, maybe we can set
up a trade??

I saw a Dave Cover Band/Dude?

sctm@vt.edu Sat Feb 11 02:34:57 1995

Okay, this is a frightening story and only those with strong hearts should
continue.

right down the road at Roanoke College (which is a crappy as hell place to
see a show, horrible crowd!) so I went to groove and in Dave's words, Funk
the Night Away.
Ryan and set up, so they let me in Free and give me an all access pass,
Schwing!!! After soundcheck, this local guy from Roanoke College opens up
the evening with his acoustic guitar. So I'm chillin' in the back and what
is the 1st thing I hear, Dancing Nancies!!! The guy started playing it
pretty cool, but then he screwed the rythm all up, meanwhile, half the
audience is loving it because they're friends with the guy. Ryan,
Everything's soundman looks at me and says, and I quote, "What is this
Fucking Bullshit? Nooooo!"
songs, drops his pick, screws up the rythms, and to close I hear that
familiar intro to Jimi Thing, he plays just that 1st little note
progression a couple of times and then says, "I can't remeber the words to
that one?" And then he starts into the song that Jane Likes (Ryan left
then, with a greenish tint to his face). The guy played pretty well
considering the big crowd and all, but it was still WRONG! I shouldn't
have seen it. I guess I must begin to get used to it. At least he didn't
play WWYS!!! That was a real treat.
they played everyone left.) but Everything was hot. It was cool because
when they came on everyone left and it was like 20 people and them. Very
intimate.

DMB in Amstradam

<@uvmvm.uvm.edu:C452-033@IRLEARN.UCD.IE> Sat Feb 11 11:32:16 1995

I just received the DMB tour info b/c I had heard a rumor that the boys were
going to be in Europe in March. It turns out that they are going to be in Amst
radam on March 30th which is when I was going to be there anyway. Does anyone
know the name of the venue. The ticket people in Dublin have no clue. Maybe
someone in the Virginia area could call the hotline and give me the info. A
call from Dublin, Ireland to Virginia would be outragous. Thanks in advance.
Also did DMB close the show in Boston? All my friendsat Boston College couldn'
t get tix. Does anyone know if BHT is going to Europe too? Any info would
be great.  Thanks!

DMB/Bht/John Popper

bmking@mail.wm.edu Sat Feb 11 11:37:35 1995

cool shit.

------- Forwarded Message Follows -------

Okay,

First off I'd like to apologize to any one who reads this message.
It is about 2:30 on friday and I am intoxicated. But I had to share
this message with everyone who is a fan of Popper.

My friend had a party tonite. Around 12:00 i went to a bar to celebrate
my friends 21 birthday. I got back and the party was still on.
However, my friend who went to the TOWER theatre in Philly was there.
He had just returned from the DMB/BHT concert. He said it was awesome.

I asked Why? and he said because POPPER (yes John Popper played with
DMB all the way except for Satellite) played with DMB. I went balisstice
. That is incredible. Popper is from Princeton which is only about
1 hour from Philly, so i am not surpirsed that he was there. He said
Popper made the show. I hope he was no lying to me.

Anyway, I would usually be totally psyched by this, but I am a little
disapointed. I have tix for sat's show (also at the tower in Philly)
and I am afraid that Popper will not play. I will
be extremely dissapointed if i Miss this great opportunity to see
my favorite musician play with some good bands (three bands DMB/BHT/UA)
playing with Popper

Anyway, again if I don't make any sense I am intoxicated, but I needed
to say what I said

About DMB/BHT West of "The River"

jpederso@d.umn.edu Sat Feb 11 15:09:12 1995

I just bought my tickets to see this tour in Minneapolis. The ticket
TOTALLY FAILS TO MENTION DMB OR UGLY AMERICANS! Kinda upset. I'm going
to see DMB. Not really a BHT fan. If they play 5 songs and then ditch
that's gonna suck. Especially since I'm driving 2 1/2 hours to see (what
may be) and opening band.

BHT/DMB Review, Friday 2/10/95

Dave Matthews Band and Big Head Todd and the Monsters
Tower Theater - Upper Darby, PA - Friday 2/10/94

Tower Theater, and came away happy to see the Dave Matthews Band. The
Ugly Americans opened, and the stage was a dance party for all the
fourteen year-old mainline brats during their set. I felt very old at
21. We (and the majority of our section) were excited to see DMB next,
figuring they must be the opening act. Big Head Todd has four albums,
while DMB has one major-label release, so we were kind of surprised to

Kensington Line
Flander's Fields
Soul For Every Cowboy
Tangerine
Broken Hearted Savior
Wearing Only Flowers
Sister Sweetly
Neckbreaker
Bittersweet
Vincent of Jersey-
Leaving Song
Dinner With Ivan
Turn the Light Out
I Will Carry
Circle
Shadowlands

Todd was good, but the crowd wsn't that into it. The crowd loved Tangerine
when they figured it out. The Leaving Song and Flander's were my
highlights. He ended on such a mellow, down note with Shadowlands.
IMHO, he was pissed to open for DMB.
Anyway, the crowd got much more into it when DMB came out.

Recently
Strange Intro Improv-
#36-
Recently Reprise
Best Of What's Around
What Would You Say *
Minarets
Dancing Nanacies
Typical Situation
Two Step-
Ants Marching

I probably screwed up the order, but I don't think I forgot any.
Recently was a great opener. Leroi had a nice long solo on Best of
What's Around. Dave was very into the show, with the little impromptu
intro schpeils he likes to give in most every. There was a strange
four line intro that I had never heard which sounded like it might segue
into Say Goodbye, but Carter went into #36, which no one knew. It was
super cool that they went right back into Recently, with the some people
do, some people don't thing. Then a hulking dude with harmonica vest
came out, and (obviously) they played What Would You Say, and people dug
it. The rest of the set was so hot, though. They were tighter than I
had ever seen them. Even Boyd looked good and sounded good. Perhaps he
cleaned up his habits a bit. Two Step was unreal, even if only four or
five people knew it, but everyone knew Ants, which you didn't have to be
a genius to call as the closer. Warehouse was a great call as the
encore, and perhaps the best song of the whole night.

As far as the venue, they ripped out the seats close to the stage at the
Tower and it is now a pit. The security was OBNOXIOUS, checking tickets
everywhere, shining flashlights in people's eyes. They left five full
rows of seats empty, and you couldn't even take a quick breather to sit
down there. Immediately three people shone lights right in your eyes as
soon as you stepped into their off-limits territory. We also couldn't
see the stage, since the bouncer doing the flashlight shining right in
front of us was 6'9", 350. Smoking wasn't that difficult, but if you're
going tonight, be wary.

P.S. If you taped, I'd love it and I've got tons to trade...

Will someone please answer the question that i asked earlier. When is the
JMU concert. I need to know.

thanks
gavbacca

did someone see jmu listed as a date? i go to school here, and i bitch
about our shitty music scene all the time, but nobodies told me
that dave is coming here.

_but_ things are really strongly leaning towards us getting live.
it's somewhat tentative at this point, but if they do come here,
i strongly recommend everyone who can come to come. not that live
is a particularly impressive band, imho, but i'd like to think that
we can sustain an act that large, and that will help us to perhaps
establish a better music scene here.

chicago tikets?!?!

jugular@rhf.bradley.edu Sat Feb 11 16:38:24 1995

i feel really bad about having to grovel, but i would LOVE to go see the
boys in chicago, and i was even planning on going, but i never did find
out the date tickets went on sale, and thus i missed it, and now can't
go. i'm looking for two extra tickets, or more would be great. i'm
willing to pay whatever you payed for them, including ticket bastard's
service fees, and i would offer anything in my meager collection to
anyone who can help me out.
as a last resort, i also have two ninth row floor tickets to the peoria
show on the 14th, so if i absolutely have to, i'd rather see them in
chicago, and would be happy to trade. anyone out there that can help?
thanks a lot

Re: Dave and Rusted

barter@lclark.edu Sat Feb 11 16:39:03 1995

I went to two Rusted Root shows yesterday and they were incredible. The
first was a small jam at a music store that they did as a promotional
deal for their record and later show. They aren't that big in Portland
(Oregon). As a matter of fact there were only maybe a hundred people
there. The band just had a lot of fun, we were really jammin' to the
music.
when they played with DAVE. So what I'm trying to ask is if anyone has
those shows and would like to share. Unfortunately, I'm a "newbie" and
don't have much to offer in return except maybe some Phish legs.

Re: DAVE IS HUGE! GOOD!

lguffey@roanoke.infi.net Sat Feb 11 16:44:11 1995

Uhhh,  OK
        I don't think anyone cares that Dave has gotten big. That's not
what we mean when some of us say Dave sold out. His large fan base is cool,
 young kids going is cool. What sucks is when young kids, old kids, drunk
kids go because it's the cool thing to do, and not for the music. What we
mean by selling out, is the setlists, the attitudes. Dave used to play
songs that meant something to him, he played lot's of stuff, experimenting
and having fun. Now he's playing songs off the CD, he's playing them the
same way every show with out goofing around and being creative like the old
days.

I'll jump in here and put in a few comments about DaMaBa's popularity. I'll
also say I just recently discovered Dave, even though I live in Roanoke, VA.
and just signed on to Minarets last week.

One thing that strikes me on here is the similarities in what people are
saying about DaMaBa and what people said and are doing about my most
favorite of favorite bands, Pink Floyd. On Echoes, the PF mailing list,
there is a general concensus that at least 90% of the people at the Floyd
shows were just there to because it was the cool thing to do, not for the
music. Me being a die hard Floyd fan for 8 years now, I agree. And I imagine
that about the same percentage of people going to see DaMaBa right now are
doing it for the same reason. The bigest differnece between the two is that
Floyd plays to 60000 people and Dave plays to 6000. But I guess in a small
venue, 5000 people screaming during Satellite can sound every bit as
annoying as 50000 drunk rednecks yelling for Another Brick in the Wall
during Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

The similarites go farther than that, though. PF won't play certain songs
anymore, partly because they think they were wierd, partly because 90% of
the people don't any more than 2 albums. Who knows why Dave has cut down his
sets.
Both bands have gotten a lot of critism about playing very similar sets
night after night.

I think what a lot of fans would like to see is things to go back to what
they were. I don't think PF will ever play in anything other than a stadium
again. But Dave is still new and who knows what could happen with him. He's
now got to follow up WWYS and, more importantly, UTTAD. If he takes to long,
the craze could disappear. Widespread musical taste ebb and flow so quickly
that he could be seen by the public as a has been, but by his die hard fans
(i.e. Minarets) as being every bit as good as he ever was. If his popularity
does change to where he's not the cool thing to do anymore it could get
better for us.

Maybe that's what Dave's trying to do. Who knows, I don't think anything
I've said will really happen. I think he'll keep getting more and more
popular to the point where he's selling out big venues and for the most
part, the people who went to see him in clubs and bars and thought it was
the greatest thing since sliced bread, will be miserable.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Hey there guys,
College in Northampton, MA? If you do, please e-mail me...I'd love to
trade. By the way, at the Tue show, the PA went out during the second
song the Ugly Americans played. All you could hear were the drums for
about five minutes. BHT was alright, DMB was incredible, but the Ugly
Americans weren't my thing. In fact, I liked them better went you could
only hear the drums and the Hammond.

2/10 Tower Theatre

dominic@sccs.swarthmore.edu Sat Feb 11 16:51:13 1995

ok, since the FAT setlist was alreay posted, i'll just fill y'all in on

there were words to the segue into #36-- something like
"All this time we spend together... I hope to God we don't grow old..."
-- the groove was totally out of nowhere. i've never heard anything
like it, after about 75 hours of live Dave and four shows. but it was
completely cool, because they went BACK into Recently (a move that i've
never heard DMB pull before, only bands like Phish, Allmans, etc).

sounds like DMB is getting Phishy on us... ;)

looked good. Leroi had this little riff going as John walked onstage.
at first, i thought he was starting an Intro- WWYS, but the band cut
him off, cause they had to organize with John. Mr. Harmonica just
started blowing, and they played their first single for the packed house
in Philly! the RCA rep (who treated me and my fellow reporter with
respect) was happy, i'm sure.

standard. the second of THREE segue sets.

i like to call it the 'What If Intro.' replaces the different 'could i
have been's.

a gift. a BIG gift. Carter waited extra long to hit the intro-Ants,
but not long enough for me to doubt they would segue...

as i believe someone already mentioned, it was the perfect encore. the
cracks in the sidewalk are getting WIDER...

i couldn't help mentioning Blue Water again after the show to Dave, and
he said (i couldn't believe it), "Oh, yeah, I have to remember how that
one goes..."

ouch.

someone in the post-show crowd asked for Watchtower and he mumbled something
about it being on tonight's setlist, maybe. what a tease.

he was signing all kinds of autographs after the show, mostly cause the
RCA exec was there, i think. he was posing for pictures, drawing on
people's shirts, etc... it was a riot. they were handing out adverts
for the new Jimi Thing single (with 1994 versions of Watchtower and
Christmas Song). much promotion going on. shmooze shmooze.

the best quote of the night came from Boyd. as i was talking about
Swarthmore to some of Dave's friends (they are Swat alums), i mentioned
that i'm in Sixteen Feet. Boyd (who hadn't really been part of the
conversation) perked right up, looked me in the eye, and said, "YOU're in
that group? Man, I HEARD that tape [Sixteen Feet's '2001- Ants
Marching']!

Damn, that shit is BADDER than a MOTHERfucker!"

he proceeded to tell the anyone within earshot about us, and how wild it
was that we did it just like the album, but with voices only. i was a
little embarrassed, but when Boyd smiles at you, you just have to smile
back.   :)

i'm still smiling.

i'm gonna smile all the way back to the Tower Theatre. see some of you
there? i'm the tall one with the dark curly hair, singing along to
Dancing Nancies, "Could I have been

-anyoneotherthanme                  ?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
read.   bike.    read.    listen to dave.    read.    eat?
sleep.    read.    type.    listen to dave.    write.    eat.
sleep?    play disc.    read.    bike.    listen to dave.    EAT!
read.    go see dave.    go see dave again.    go see dave AGAIN.
great.  I'm willing to trade it with anyone.  I don't have the setlist
written out yet but, e-mail me for more info.
BT made a cameo and played harmonica for WWYS.  That was the last time I will
enjoy that song.  It was such a thrill to see JP up there with DMB.  They
really jammed on that one.  JP looks like he lost some weight as well.
for me to hand it over. I tried to explain that Boots were allowed at DMB
shows.  He didn't buy my story and took the tapes.  Three minutes later he
came back with my tapes and apologized for the mix-up.  When I got it back, I
screwed up trying to tape the rest of the show so I don't have the last 25
min. Sorry.  I did get WWYS and some other goods one's though.  It sounds
great.  E-mail me for a trade or if you have a full tape of the show.
2/11/95-Dave doesn't disappoint
vader@wam.umd.edu Sun Feb 12 02:23:45 1995
Hey all.  Well, I just got back from the tower show and DMB really played
hard.   I was preparing myself for a disappointing show, after reading
some of the posts on how the band's been playing some typical sets, but
Dave came through and put on a great show(eventhough it was about
Jimi Thing        1.26--13.30
Seek Up           13.30-27.30
Dancing Nancies   27.30-36.10
Lie in Our Graves 36.10-43.10
Rhyme & Reason    43.50-49.15
Watchtower        49.45-58.25
Ants              58.25-1.05.00
-Encore-
Angel From Montgomery  1.05.30--1.10.50
essence of the problem
(falling; i forgot when they played this, but they did)
The show was decent, but the crowd kinda sucked.  They weren't roudy or
anything, but I think that there couldn't have been more than 5 people in the
whole building who had ever seen them before.  All I heard was "who's playin'
again?"  "what's the name of this band?", the crowd just didn't seem to get
into it, and I think that the band suffered b/c of this.  I talked to one of
the guys before the show and he said that they were probably going to plat two
sets, but they didn't, and I think the crowd had something to do with it.  But
once again I should stress that the crowd wasn't disrespectful or anything,
they seemed more apathetic than anything.
**********THE BEER GARDEN WAS IN A SEPERATE FUCKIN" ROOM********************
who ever thought this move up should be shot!!  Piss poor planning if you ask
me.  You could barely even _hear_ the band from there!!
Scott, like I said, 600 girls and YOU!!!! Take advantage of it buddy!!
What's up with all of the BHT bashing?  BHT is a great fucking band, if you
don't like them then fine, but don't trash them cuz they're not yer thing.
I finally broke down and bought the AWARE cd, sweet!!
screwed like me (not really screwed,  but kind of fubarred?).  Make sure
your RCA cabels are long,  like at least 6 feet to be safe.  I have 3 foot
cables and at the Everything show at Sweetbriar they didn't cut it.  Ryan,
the soundman did his best to set me up because he had set aside a special
channel for me and him to record from and it was all set perfectly.  So to
reach,  I had to move this crate around to the front of the Soundboard and
plug in.  That sucked because as the place filled up,  they kept bumping
into my deck and almost knocking it off.  So I was so freaked that my deck
was going to get killed,  I couldn't enjoy the show.  So I said screw it and
unplugged it and put it away.  Crap!!!  So the point being,  if I had had
6-10 foot cabels I could have set my deck up behind the Soundboard where it
would be safe.
personally wanted to prove his love to all 600 of them,  as he screamed out.
girls,  she told me I needed to dance and not just bob my head.  I didn't
have the heart to tell her I was tired as hell from dancing last night and
then getting no sleep,  oh well.  Maybe theres a lesson to learn there too,
like I need to get in better shape if I am going to dance every night.
2/11 Tower Show
JONEBRIAN@urvax.urich.edu Sun Feb 12 13:41:16 1995
What's up fellas,
Am a little tired after driving back from Philly at two in the morning
but the show was amazing!  Here's the set
Jimi (unreal)
Seek up
Nancies
Lie in
Rhyme
Wawtchtower
Ants (the newbies were clapping, what the hell?)
Halloween (Philly crowd was a little lame on this one)
Set list included Jane and Granny but they didn't get to it.  BHT was great
as was UA.  Place was packed and acoustics were great.  For those who
continue to bag on Dave for not playing long sets, his contract only
allows him to play for 1hour and 15 minutes or else face 5000 dollar fines
for every five minutes over, so ease up a little.  To those I owe tapes
to, I am spinning as fast as I can.
Dave Matthews!
beckslau@student.msu.edu Sun Feb 12 13:57:26 1995
Wow.  I am in heaven right now!  My name is Deana, and I just found dmb on the
internet services (i'm a computer beginner, but I know where to look!).  I
lived in c'ville for a couple of years & was privy to a number of shows!
Unfortunately we moved back to MI (had to, it's cold & *no* dave), so we
thought we would never catch dave again.  My friends in MI thought I was a
freak about this "dave thing" when I came home; what the hell do they know?
So now it's months later & I find minarets--- I'm so excited that I can't quite
get in touch with someone about getting on a tree.  I have 2 bootlegs on tape--
the quality is so-so, but otherwise outstanding.  I have bayou, a trax '93
show, a wtju show & some stuff from the flood zone.  I'll check into the
PAUL.WEINHOLD@med.umich.edu.  I am currently able to access minarets through a
friend, so I'll check in whenever possible.
Thank god you people are out there!  My day has been made!  I'm looking forward
3-3; we are going to try taping the show, so be ready!
Cool.  Hope to hear from somebody!
epilo@chopin.udel.edu Sun Feb 12 15:40:10 1995
Hi,
I've been lurking for quite some time now, waiting for the perfect time
to post my first message to minarets.  Well here I am.  Saw DMB in
Philly Friday night, got a chance to talk to Carter and LeRoi.
My friend Allison is from Richmond, and through her I've been introduced
to the band and gotten the chance to hang out with them a few times
before.  So, when we saw them before the show on Friday, they put us on the
guestlist for last nights show.  Hanging out after the show last night I
even met a few netters.  Dominic and Brian...Hi!!
The guys are so great.  As annoyed as I was last night with the incessant
clapping during Seek Up (Hello?!?!!) and crowd surfing (whatEVER!!), just
talking to Carter after the show made me forget all that.  All in all,
last nights show was really good. Lie in Our Graves was a real treat,
even if (well no, actually..BECAUSE)  only about two people around us knew
what was going on.  No, I'm not some Dave elitist or anything- Hardly, I mean,
I'm probably considered a "newbie" (God, I hate that word) by some of you
real old timers.  But I just like to go to the shows and hear Dave sing,
which is getting kind of hard especially when they play the ever-popular
UTTAD songs.  So during the not-so-well-known-but-amazing songs, it's
great to just get into the music without some guy screaming the lyrics in
your ear.  You know?  Ok, well I didn't mean to make my first post a
negative one, I don't think I really did, but whatever.
So, just thought I'd say hi to everyone out there in DaveLand.  I guess
it would be somewhat appropriate on this net to let you know that I
capped off a great day yesterday by spooning all night long.  A very
fulfilling day.  :)
Take care now.
Elissa
Taco Bell? Listen to this...
weh2@Ra.MsState.Edu Sun Feb 12 16:55:08 1995
OK, the Taco Bell Dave-Helping-The-Burrito-Squad-Get-Through-the-Day
scenario is pretty rough, I must admit, but you can only imagine my
basketball game, packed house.  All the players are warming up, and all
the fans are reading newspapers and occasionally yelling at the Ark.
players.  Over the loudspeaker is your typical "AYYY-OOH, Let's Go!" and
other various and sundry Jock Rock outtakes.  Then, in the middle of
fucking nowhere, comes this singular rhythmic drum beat that could only
be Ants!!  Good god, I was right.  My buddy, Brad, looked at me with the
same shock I felt inside.  After we got over that initial shock, I think
we really both wanted everyone to SHUTUP AND LISTEN.  Didn't happen,
unfortunately.  Granted, it was kinda cool to hear something other than
"Shout!"  over the loudspeaker, but it just didn't seem right at any
sporting event (well, maybe a backgammon tournament or something...).  If
you can't fathom this scenario, just think of a real big taco bell with
ten sweaty guys running around in it.
contract and he's EVERYWHERE!
messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Sun Feb 12 17:47:05 1995
Strange to hear he has an hour and 1/4 limit on his shows, but then agian
could be good.  Bands like Phish really don't realy on their voices so
much, they can play a 3 hour show and not really come out for the worse.
I can't belive I am doing this... Dead and Dave are a lot closer on this
end.  Dead need their voices to be hot in order to pull things off well.
they obviously played too many shows too long and their voices + then
music suffered.  I am assuming this contract thig is real and is so Dave
can't sing his vocal cords out too fast, not a bad idea at all.  Rather
hear 6 years of 1 1/4 hours than 2 years of 2 1/2.  Also sitting around
the other day listening to RTT decided to go out.  At the ATM what was
playing, DAVE!  Then getting Ice cream, more Dave!  Everynight at work at
least 3 Dave songs on the radio!  It's cool, but then agian...  I guess I
should give places I hear playing Dave fat Bagbys to play, at least
improve the Dave they play 8-)  Still snowing in Boulder, looks like my
chants, dances and Dave playing payed off!
Peace & Out...
Japhy
Listen to Phish, walk around and sleep alot.
