MTV says Dave does not have AIDS

MTV report that Dave had HIV. Anyway, I think its cool for them to deny
something they never reported in the first place.

*** AMENDED TR3 TREE STRUCTURE REPOST ***

jeg5s@faraday.clas.virginia.edu Fri Apr 14 18:38:17 1995

Bound to be Charlottesville Virginia's next claim to fame.
Strong local influence on members of Dave Matthews Band.
Sometimes co-performers with DMB, Dave solo, & Shannon Worrell.

It's Indian/Eqyptian Funkified Jazz with Byrnesque sympathy.
It's ultra groovy, mindblowing, invigorating, and addictive.
Sometimes slow and driving, often frantically gorgeous.

There are two shows, each on one tape (2 tapes total):

No fillers necessary; it's TR3 back to back

This is the second posting of the TR3 TREE
STRUCTURE. This posting represents additions
only, not revisions or changes. If you were
listed in the first posting, you're in the
same place, getting tapes from the same people,
BUT you might have one more leaf under you.

I apologize for any confusion this causes. This
tree is much larger than I thought it would be,
and I've had a series of problems at this end. I
have contacted *everyone* in this tree personally,
but there still may some problems cases. Please
contact me if you have any problems or concerns.

If you missed the original singup, hold off; I
may run this tree again with more tapes someday.
For now, if you missed the signup or if you aren't
listed, there's not much I can do, cause I've
stretched thing tightly within the structure.

This is the TREE STRUCTURE announcement and posting
for a two-tape tree of TR3 -- featuring Tim Reynolds,
Warren Richardson, and Robert Jospe, plus many
special Charlottesville guests -- featuring analog
1993. The tape lengths are 90min and 100min,
respectively. (If you are mailing blanks, postage
would be $3 priority, and about $2 third class.)
(Also, if you're mailing blanks and don't know what
brand to get, I recommend Maxell XLII.)

I will include setlists, bandmember info, and info on
how to get past and future TR3 disc releases -- on
*tape labels* which will be passed down the tree
structure. Please make sure to make copies for your
leaves; leaves, please make sure to get copies from
your branch parents!

who will copy the show from the masters to DAT.

Each of the 5 DAT leaves has four analog leaves.

Each of the 20 analog parents has up to four leaves. If there is
a summation sign ("+") before a name, that indicates that, in
their signup form, that person indicated that they would mail
blanks and postage, rather than trade. If your name is preceeded
by a summation sign, your parent will be looking for your blanks
and postage to be in the mail pronto; you should get them out as
soon as possible, so that they can be dubbed and returned to you
as soon as your parents get their tapes.

If your name is listed above, please get hopping with your parent
so we can get this tree rolling. If your name has not been listed
yet, find it with the similarly indented group of four (or 3)
under a capitalized name below (the one not indented quite so
much.) If your name has a "+" in front of it, you requested to
send blanks and postage, and your parent will be looking for them
within a week or so.

SOMEONE HELP, please!!

OK...I just got a new tape...and as I am anal as hell, I keep all of my
labels perfectly. Problem is this one doesn't list a venue! The date is
06/21/93 and it is from Athens, GA? If anyone has it, PLEASE PLEASE help
me out so I can keep them all accurate! Also if you have it, could anyone
please tell me what song is in between Typical Situation and Lying in Our
Graves. It's labeled ???? on mine. Actually I have only listened to it
once cause I just got it last night so I might know what it is cause I just
wasn't paying attention to it when that song came around (working on a
paper!)
So if you know the answers to either of these questions I would greatly
appreciate it!

One more thing...I think I have posted this before but I never got a
response. Does anyone know where I can get a gif or any other file format
of the DMB Firedancer? I do a lot of graphic design and I want to put it
on a J-card. If not, anyone have any cool ideas for some simnple DMB
graphics for use in J-cards?

Thank you, thank you and thank you!

"THE BEST OF WHAT'S AROUND" DMB CD TREE ANNOUCEMENT

and it is just not going to happen. It really is not management's fault,
they were really cool about it, more so it is DMB's agreement with RCA
that is going to keep this from happening. Well, as a consolation there
will be a tape tree from the deal! I have continued to collect responses
and based on what tapes are available to me I am in the process of
constucting a tape to be distributed. Please do not write me about it
quite yet, I will send out a form later today for you all to fill out.
I would like to thank everyone who responded to my posts, and everyone
who helped out by using their sources (or in some cases making new
sources!) and helping find out about the Bama situation and getting me
management's phone number. Anyway, here are a couple of the responses
from people who had contact with management that really summarize
managment's position. Hey, read these, because there is a cool note
in the second one about an upcoming DMB cd ... !

Thanks again all, and I'll keep in touch with the tape tree info ...

--- LETTER ONE ---

I've spoken with management about this.

drop it.
now.

You would be putting DM into mucho jeopardy with RCA and not to mention
violating several of DMB contracts with punitive damages totaling a great
deal of money.

Contact me if you have further questions/concerns?

--- LETTER TWO --- --- This one is pretty cool ---

From SimonSkol@aol.com Fri Apr 14 07:50:48 1995

I spoke with Koran Kapshaw, Dave's manager. He said that it was illeagl.
But he was really cool about it. He said the FBI was looking to the "Live
at Ziggy's" import. He wanted us to know that he understands why we wanted
to do this. Between their albums this fall, they are going to put out CD's
called "Best of the Road Vol. 1" which will cost 7.98 and be all live stuff
from this tour. He wants to keep legal taping at the shows and not have to

YAHOOOOOO!!!

YAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I just finished my first year of University and it is feeling GOOD. I've
been waiting to write this message for over a month, because I was
studying my butt off. anyways, this is my first REAL post. I was very
fortunate to Catch DMB in my Home-town Vancouver. Anyways,it was the
same night as the Grey Cup (for all you americans that's the supposed
Canadian equivalent to the Super Bowl), and for this reason there were
very few people. I'm talking at most 100 people. Anyways, the show was
absolutely incredible, I was within arms reach of Dave for the entire
show. Boyd's smile was so big, and he was jamming so hard, I seriously
thought he'd explode. After the show I talked to all the guys, and there
extremely nice. I have to say this was the best live performance of any
band that I have ever seen. Anyways, I thought that it would be worth a
try to see if anyone taped this show (I don't think anyone did). I doubt
that anyone on this net was at the show, but if you were by some chance I
would give you my life for a copy. (the show is 11/27/94 Vancouver, B.C.)

Well, if anyone has read this far, I'd love to do some tradin', your list
gets mine.

THE BEST OF WHAT'S AROUND -- TAPE TREE

Well as you all know the CD project fell through, so, well, we'll make a tape
out of it. I have compiled a list of everyone's favorite songs, venues,
and dates. From that list and from what tapes I have available to me at
this time I am compiling a 100 minute tape which I will call "The Best
of What's Around." All I can tell you is it is sounding pretty cool.

Anyway, I have never run a tape tree before, so this form may look a little
odd and may be missing some essentials -- but whatever, I'll figure it out.
Now, one last very important point. This tape will be made from HQ analog
tapes. This is NOT being made from digitial tapes. I am only using the best
HQ tapes that are available though. Also, there will *not* be a DAT branch.
There really isn't a point.

Please, even if you filled out a CD tree form, please fill this form out.
This is what I will be going by.

I have not set a deadline for this tree yet but it is tenatively set for
April 30th. I may cut it shorter so please reply ASAP.

--- CUT HERE ---

What type of taping equipment do you have? (Please include number of heads,
and anything else that may be of importance)

Do you have tapes to trade with your parent? If so, please do not include
a list but please specify what bands, quality, and if you have DATs to
trade.

If you were a parent would you like to have blanks or concerts sent to you?

How many copies of tapes would you be willing to make?

Would you be willing to trade with Maxwell XLII-S tapes? (Maxwell XLII's
in general will be the standard tape, but those using better tapes
will be moved higher up the tree).

--- CUT HERE ---

mail me at jjgoke@cs.csbsju.edu if you have problems. Using REPLY *may*
make your message get rejected (sorry, it's a problem with the way our
email is set up).

Thanks again,

Grovel

jjgoke@bingen.cs.csbsju.edu Fri Apr 14 22:31:47 1995

song list that everyone sent in for the not happening CD "Tree" and have
a list of everyone's favorites songs, locations, and venues. I need to do
a grovel for two tapes. The 2/24/95 show and the 11/9/94 show. A *lot*
of requests came for these shows, and my copy of the 2/24/95 show is very
bad -- and I never have had the 11/9/94 show. So if you would be willing to
do a trade with me if you have a HQ copy of either show I would much
appreciate it so I could get some of the songs on the Best of What's Around
Tape for the tree. I have most of the other shows I need to compile the
tape. Anyway, in case anyone wants to know the overall favorite song
Granny/Say Goodbye (tie), then Two Step, Lie in Our Graves, and warehouse.
All the rest had less than 5 requests each -- though there were some
pretty cool suggestions [and they will definetly make it on the tape].

Thanks,

hey...i don't wanna mess up the tree...i guess i joined after the

good friends with Jos (he taught my brother), so he would adore the
tape. So if anyone anywhere on the tree is willing to make an extra copy
for me, please let me know via personal email. i will be eternally
grateful. I don't need real high quality, so even if someone only has
time to pop the tapes in their little Sony dual tape deck that they've
had since middle school, i'd be content... thanks so much, you guys!
maybe i could send you a tape of my bro's band playing live at Zipper's (in

There IS a store that will reserve tickets!

tickets available at the gate, but with yours reserved, you won't have to

two tickets, and still need a shotgun for the trip down.
To respond, e-mail me directly. I've put my minarets on hold for a week for
a trip. I just wouldn't be able to handle a week's worth all at once,
especially with SNL prompting all kinds of Courtney Cox ramblings. (I have
to admit, though, she has turned out rather nicely from her "Dancing in the

Dave in Musician Magazine

From the June 1995 Musician Magazine

"Builing an Audience from the Grassroots"
--By Dave Matthews

else, that's the feeling that has surrounded our success with the Dave
Matthews Band. That's not to say that it's been easy. I've never worked
so hard for anything in life. When one climbs a mountain, the focus is on
each step.
was no plan, no single vision, no clear style in mind. There was only a
desire to play. Everyone had other gigs and, however modest, everyone was
making a living. Even in the beginning we felt this band had something
special and it became eveyone's main focus.
focused on building a fan base and playing to as many people as possible.
We chose fraterinties and parties prior to worrying about clubs because we
would have a guaranteed audience and we'd know how much money we would
make. We focused on different regions of the country at different times.
Communication across college campuses worked well within the Southeast and
Northeast. IT was a much easier transition to the clubs after playing the
fraternities.
playing to people from all over the country and they would in turn spread
the word to their respective hometowns. Colorado was also a great
market-its like playing a national resort. From the beginning we have had
an open taping policy that allows our fans o share our music with their
friends. Bootleg tapes of our music preceded our recordings and spread the
early and continued word. Our managers, Coran Capshaw and Ross Hoffman,
helped us organize our growing touring business. We started a small
touring company and a small corporation to control our spending and
savings.
has been with us from early on-as is the case with most of our crew. We
all share a faith in the music. From the muscians to the crew to the
management there is a common belief in what we do.
everyone to succeed as best we can. With that homegrown ideal in mind we
addressed the question of T-shirts and merchandise and decided to keep that
"in-house" as well. All of that has become another creative outlet and
source of revenue.
solid fan base anchored in the SOutheast. WIth some help from Blues
Traveler, Widespread Panic, the Samples, Big Head Todd and the Monsters,
and Phish, audiences started growing in the North and West.
their ivory tower. Dinner started being arranged (and paid for), gifts
were appearing backstage, and more and more execs were asking, "How did you
get to this point without an album?" We played.
Rags. WIth thte following we had gained it would have been stupid for us
to sign away freedom and money to a larger record company. Having sold
over 150,000 copies of R2t, and another 25,000 copies of our second release
Recentlywe feel very good about our decision. Those two releases are still
supporting us very well.
CD, UTTAD. I think the control we have over our careers is a result of our
grassroots footing. In an industry that doesn't know their teeth from a
smile or music from money you need more than a "deal."

I Can't Go!

AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
deep love for them). Well, I got the tour dates someone posted (and thank
you very much for that) and the closest tour date is Nashville (I live in
Huntsville, AL) Unfortunately, I can't go b/c I have to work. Boo
Hoo!!!!! So, whoever goes to the concert, please post a review/set
list/etc. so I can at least pretend I was there.
PS I WANT BOOTLEGS! I don't have anything to trade, but I'm willing to
send blanks and postage. I saw the tape tree post, but, since I missed
the first few messages about it, am basically clueless as to who to
e-mail and everything that's on the tree. Well, this isn't that DMB
related, but it's the best I can do for now.

They will be,
WWYS and Two Step.
If I am right, then you know I had inside infomation (which I prob. do).

Greenville Show

MAUL@UTKVX.UTCC.UTK.EDU Sat Apr 15 09:25:20 1995

Hey there kids,

As of 5:14 a.m. Saturday morning i would like to make a wild and crazy
guess as to what dave and the boys will be playing tonight.

WWYS and .........Two Step
yes, that's right, two step. Call me crazy, call me what you will, but
I've just got this wild feeling that is what they will play ( a little
birdy told me so).

And now, on to the show that transpired tonight.
First off, Boxing Gandhis had a good stage presence and were good.
Next, BHTM were very good towards the end of his set. There was this
really hot girl behind me during this part, and anyway, that's another
story. Let's just say she was very friendly.

Crowd surfers suck. I hate them. I killed one.

Warehouse ( i called it way before)
Best of what's around
Rhyme and Reason
Granny (kick ass version)
Nor. wood intro
Recently
Water wine jam
Lie in our graves (WOW, best version I've EVER heard), they jammed hard for
a while.
Dancing Nancies (neat intro)
Jimi Thing (jammed)
Minarets (original with sounds and everything!!)
Typical Situation
Carter Beauford on the drums (solo!!)
Say Goodbye
Satelite
Ants

Just Dave and Stefan doing new song
WWYS (i can't even begin to say how dissapointed I was here, and of
course, the crowd sucked. i hate 8 year olds. nuff said)
Nature intro Tripping Billies.

Over all a fucking great show on Dave's behalf. Not much more to say
except that I met Carter and his dog, and Boyd (he's the coolest).

Oh, and if anyone was there besides my friends and the frat daddys and the
elementary kids who DID tape the show (I saw no mics) please let me know, I
would trade you about anything for a decent copy of the show.
thanks for your time and attention.
Nathan
P.S. I met some minarets from Birmingham (UAB and Samford), you guys were
pretty cool, see ya around.

Crowd Surfers.

TREMOR@UTKVX.UTCC.UTK.EDU Sat Apr 15 09:58:09 1995

I really don't see what every one has against crowd surfing. I was
actually on top and it felt good. I know that Dave must have seen me and
that is nice to know. I loved the Greenville show...
Okay, so maybe I am shitting you guys. After the Greenville show, I have
composed a serious list of how to eliminate some of the repeat offenses.
They are....
- Punch with fist on any region of body
- Pickpocket
- Steal Shoes
- Punch with fist focusing on genital regions
- Grab hair and don't ever let go
- Scratch legs as deep as possile with nails or keys
- Grab head and force him to fall in front of you
- After falling in front of you, commence to beat the hell out of the
- Use Swiss Army scissors and cut hair off
- Use same scissors and cut the genitalia you punched off
- Twist foot in attempt to actually break ankle
- Plant drugs on person and tell nearest security officer (although this
- Grab leg and when he falls, accidently step on affore mentioned genitalia
- Rip out kidneys as he floats bye (only if the other options do not work!)
And last but certainly not least...
- Shot him with a Glock 9 mm special
Any questions? Seriously, most of these are fun to do. I started doing a
couple tonight and plan to implement the rest in future concert ventures.
I came home with a new hiking boot, a lock of hair, and Mr. William
Ganford's wallet with a crisp 50 spot. I plan to use it to buy a matching
hiking boot and then buy a new and bigger Swiss Army knife.

I do want to let you guys know what the security did, though. As people
were crowd surfing, many would throw them over the baracade between the
stage and crowd and then the Event Staff would throw them out the door.
One guy actually fucking climbed on the speakers in front and thought it
was cool. Man, that Satellites song really inspires people now days. The
cool thing, no....the REALLY COOL thing was he got his ass kicked by the
fucking security. Man, I chatted with the head of security after the show
for a good 15-20 minutes and he was laughing his ass off. He said they got
in a few blows to "calm" him down and then literally tossed his ass in the
street. That was great.
Later...Jeff
p.s. I hope to get more shoes in Nashville on Monday...maybe tennis shoes
this time......well......Frat daddies only wear those cool, trendy
Birkenstocks.....fuck it, I could use a pair, why not?

SNL

dans@cloud9.net Sat Apr 15 15:51:06 1995

My hopes are for Halloween and Get in Line. Minarets-Bluewater sounds good
too, or howabout Spotlight & Say Goodbye? The TV execs would never know what
hit 'em. I hope dave ends up in some sort of skit - he really is a funny guy.

sidenote- Any tapers around here know anything about the Nakamichi 480 2-head
cassette deck? All I know is that it's old and it likes to chew up 100min
tapes (must be hungry :). Is it worth getting it repaired?

I won't mind if they play ants, but if they do WWYS, they better do something
other than the CD version.

2/24/95 DMB Tree

cdeluci@hubcap.clemson.edu Sat Apr 15 18:23:24 1995

Here it is...the official sign-up form for my 2/24/95 DMB Tree at
Roseland. The encore at this show featured Trey Anastasio and John
Popper jamming along on All Along the Watchtower. The seed was provided
by DAT Taper Chris Newhouse (applause, applause). Chris had a soundboard
patch and was 2nd in the chain of decks. He recorded the show through
his Teac DA-P20 DAT deck onto Sony 90m DDS Media Recognition DAT tapes.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have DD capability, so this will be ANALOG ONLY.
I will be accepting signups until Friday, April 21, at noon. I urge you to
not wait, though; send your signups back out ASAP to insure that they get
here. Also, please make the subject line read ROSELAND TREE so that I
can save them directly to a folder. If you have a question about the
tree, feel free to email me, but not under the above subject line
(because then it won't be read until after sign-ups close). Any sign-up
that does not include ALL required information will be discarded. If you
have never been on a tree before, I reccomend signing up as a leaf to get
an idea as to how this thing works. In your group's FAQ, there is
probably a section on tape trees (in case you don't know what they are).
Lastly, if we have spoken before about this tree and you are still
interested, PLEASE fill out the signup form anyway so that I know you
are still interested. And now, the sign-up form...

SNL

rtrim@magicnet.net Sun Apr 16 05:06:11 1995

hmmmmmmmm, just saw SNL and i must say that i was a bit disappointed with
the song selection. i was kinda hoping that they would do a different song
other than WWYS and ants (played on MTV spring break, HOB, and Letterman) i
mean, they are great songs, i have nothing against them, its just that i was
expecting a different song. two step, like some of you predicted, jimi
thing, an upcoming single??, or even warehouse, which they teased us with
(hmph, whats with that warehouse introants, strange), would seem
appropriate "new" songs to play for TV. does anyone know if this was a
decision made by DMB solely, or were they pressured by the record execs??
well, no matter. be it WWYS or granny, im always happy to hear dave live.
hopefully, _next_ time we'll hear something different.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!

rude@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu Sun Apr 16 05:08:44 1995

Damn, just got done watching Dave and the boys jammin on SNL. While the
songs were not suprising, the way they played them was. First up was
"What would you say" which they started off kinda nervous but then as
dave started to sing, they relaxed. Boyd was great and the band actually
, to my suprise, jammed hard on national TV. Carter seemed to be loving
it, smiling in the back, and leroi got a big solo which was great.

then for the second song, I was hoping for a non-album tune, like say
goodbye. Instead they started an intro to warehouse and I was like
"what?", they can't play that. Thats too long for tv. Then they jumped
into ants. I was dissapointed at first but it turned out to be a great
performance. Boyd was absolutely into the music, it looked like he was
breaking strings on his bow if I was not mistaken. It looked like more
strings were coming out as he played harder. It was a longer version
than I though they wold play. It felt good. The crowd loved it.

At the end of the show when courtney said goodbye she had her arm around
dave and then gave him a nice hug. Daves a lucky guy. I taped it so i'm
gonna go watch it again. Hope you all enjoyed it, I now have new faith
in the Dave Matthews Band. They are that good.

snl and WILMINGTON

johnfro@acpub.duke.edu Sun Apr 16 05:09:43 1995

okay performance on snl, the two songs were expected, and performed
pretty well. the rest of the show zucked.
i feel sorry for those people going to the wilmington show. there is no
way in hell that the band is going to get up for the show. first of all,
they have to do the west coast version of snl, so they probably won't
even leave new york until about 5 am. next, the wilmington show starts
at 2, so the band will have very little rest. i hope they play well, but
to anyone going to the show, don't expect the best

pmod@magicnet.magicnet.net Sun Apr 16 05:12:18 1995

heya. just saw the snl show on nbc. great stuff, they first played wwys.
it was pretty good, seemed like boyd went nutso with his solos. dave also
seemed happier playing it than he did for the HOB show. i like to see him
smile when he sings. the second song was ants, but they did 5-10 seconds
of the warehouse intro, complete with the signal guitar in the beginning. i
nearly messed my shorts i was so excited, but then they went into the
obligatory drums for ants. good stuff tho. 'What you see is human...' peace.

WWYS & Ants. But with a warehouse intro to ants???? That screwed me up, I
really thought they were going to play Warehouse, which would have been a lot
cooler than ants. Boyd's and Leroi did get chances to jam though, and Boyd
ROCKED at the end of ants- horsehairs everywhere! The whole band seemed to be
really into ants, and their energy showed, but they looked kind of bored
during WWYS. I would be too.

Re: SNL

shinters@indiana.edu Sun Apr 16 06:23:41 1995

Because I am stuck here in the middle of nowhere Indiana, I just got to
see SNL (one hour delay). However, I am happy to see my boys nonetheless.

don't hold that against Dave and the band. It is not their decision
anymore. The Ants intro threw me off a bit. But, I still like Ants and
was excited to see the band really get into their music. I hope they were
having lots of fun...

great. Dave looked adorable as usual (my entire floor is in love with
him) in his faded henleys and "bowling shoes" that we all love. Boyd was
classy. 'Nuff said. But, by far, my most favorite outfit was Stefan's. He
looked awesome. The jacket and hat made the image. What a cutie....

maintain that Boyd and Carter do the best job with PR. Dave seems so
camera shy. But, even LeRoi and Stefan were shaking hands and Dave sorta

Random Ramblings

DANIELT@tiger.hsc.edu Sun Apr 16 07:34:44 1995

Hello fellow 'reters-

Well, I have got a few random things to say about life, substances, and oh yeah
dmb.

Went to the Greenville show last night. I know its been discussed a shitload
on here, but this isn't really about the show as much as it is the band.
The band is not exhausted as some complained a week or so again. Last night
was the wackiest show I have seen in a while. Dave was pretty crazy compared
to the other three shows I have seen this semester. It was nice to hear more
random noises from dave. He was really reserved last week at duke compared to
greenville. it was awesome to be jamming to rhyme and reason and to hear
different lyrics during one of the verses. almost like old times when the
lyrics to R&R were different every time. still very much like uttad but a
little different. what was up with lie in our graves? it was going great.
nice leroi solo as usual. it got quiet. the crowd was cheering. i was
waiting for "i can't believe that we would lie in our graves" and it never
came. the just stopped. i don't know but i was left hanging. it was like
this friend of mine who builds up a story but then says "oh nevermind." kinda
wacky, kinda different, kinda like it. leave the ordinary, but only a few in
the crowd probably knew that the song wasn't over. oh well.
the new song that is kinda slow is really good. heard it twice now. kinda
rough but kinda sweet.

boy, i am kinda using kinda alot tonight. sorry, kinda late.

greenville crowd sucked. saw the "look up, look down, all around" head
movements. teenage couples making out all around me during satellite. kinda
sick.

about the choice of songs for snl. anybody ever think that maybe they like to
play those songs? i know they probably get sick of hearing people yell wwys,
satellite, and ants at shows, but that does not mean they don't like those
songs. just because you don't like the songs doesn't mean they don't like it.
i respect your right not to like those songs. in fact, i don't like wwys much.
i didn't like it before uttad, but they wrote these songs, and these songs
probably have some sentimental value to these guys. respect their right to
play 'em. keep writing that you don't like songs, that's your right, but don't
get your panties or boxers or tighty whiteys in a wad because they play them.

cool to hear minarets live last night. have not heard it live since the
9/27/94 uva show. that song is our namesake, yet i never hear anybody talk
about it. i think that it is an absolutely incredible tune, especially live.
that song is so intense live.

well, i have rambled enough. sorry if you read this far and are
bored/pissed/tired/etc. sitting here listening to janis joplin. wow. she is
the most impassioned singer i have heard. dave's music moves me to great ends,
but nothing comes close to the musical high i receive when listening to janis.

well, it's time to get some rest, think about live dmb, fall asleep, dream of
seeing janis in concert, then pretend i'm the cheshire cat. that's one cool
cat.

lates, smokes, sweet dreams, dmb shows, buds, and life to you all........tom

in regards to crowd surfing...

lono@strauss.udel.edu Sun Apr 16 07:56:22 1995

okay

I know I posted an opinion about the grateful Dead a ways back that was
not popular, but I'd like to use a Grateful dead example for second here...

If you try to go see a cool band, and expect to be treated well by the
security, you should try to control your selves.

I'm speaking of the Orlando dead shows last spring where many hundreds of
dead heads were maced because a few got rowdy and decided to rush the gates.

The Dead is tremendously unpopular in orlando and other venues due to the
acts of idiocy and brutality commmited back and forth between the crowd
and security.

They will never play Starlake again. They will never play the Greek again.

crowd surfing, while unpopular with most DMB fans, is NOT best solved by
encouraging the security to beat them over the head.

Encouraging a security guard to beat up one fan is an excuse for them to
beat up another. POlice brutality incites riots...riots incite
havoc...havoc is an open invitation to NEVER PLAY THERE AGAIN.

If you crowd surf...stop it. Go see Gwar. Go see green Day.

Funny thing is, the people who crowd surf aren't wired into the minarets,
so this is basically a stupid thing to even post, i know.

If you want to see a band come back, however, than you gotta realize that
beating up people is not an excellent tactic.

The sooner DMB gets a reputation as trouble, the sooner we can no longer
see him in our home town.

Stomping crowd surfers' nuts is not the answer...IMHO...

I just smoked the nastiest clove cigarette ever...yeek

I missed SNL...

messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Sun Apr 16 09:58:17 1995

Enough of that subject, Im sure there will be a flood soon. Instead I
saw Outbreak, very interesting movie, I would reccomend it. But I think
it will give me nightmares. The Colorado Daily just ran an interesting
article, not directly about Dave, but major involving him. I am going to
cut out the unrelated fufra and then post it soon. Hope everyone had a
good night. Peace.

SNL Two Step

TREMOR@UTKVX.UTCC.UTK.EDU Sun Apr 16 18:40:42 1995

This is totally serious, I promise. I have other people that would back me
up, one of which is on the Minarets.....but Carter after the Greenville
show, around 1:30 a.m., said in response to my question....
on Monday to see you guys in Nashville, hook us up with a nice Two Step?"
up. We are considering it for tomorrow actually. That would be cool,
right?"
But, I guess they decided against it. I am going to call a guy that went
to NY to see it and find out if they played anything else in the two
rehersal before the show. Just thought I would let you guys know what he
said.
About the crowd surfing, I know from speaking to a good friend of Boyd's
(and a close friendndf mine) that Boyd hates crowd surfing and just the
general admission chaos in general. If you hurt someone who is doing it,
they probably wont do it again. Maybe, just maybe, they will get pissed
off and quit listening to the music. They are losers anyway, so the hell
with them. Later....Jeff

Setlists File

Is there any word on this? I know it is incomplete, but I think it
should be made available anyway. It will evolve just like Phish's
Helping Phriendly Book did...once it is posted, people can check what is
posted against their setlists and tapes to ensure accuracy.
Also, is there a proposed name for it? I think we Minaretters should
think hard on a DMB lyric that could serve as a name for this file. I'll
be willing to use my mailbox to take suggestions and periodically post them.

TAPERS IN OLYMPIA/VANCOUVER?

Is there anyone out there going to the May 4th DMB and BHT in Olympia?
Is there anyone tapin this show? If so I would give anything to get a
copy - ANYTHING!

also, I might as well ask, DMB is coming to Vancouver, B.C. (that's where
I live) two days later on may 6th. I haven't seen anyone on this net
from Canada, but perhaps some people form Seattle\Portland are coming
down. I was also wondering if anyone would happen to be taping this show
- because I would give both of my arms for a copy, and I'd through in a
couple of shows too.

I went to the rehearsal last night for snl. I had traded my necklace for
leroi's backstage pass to the spring break show, and he wore it last night,
standing out on teh set watching g.e. smith play. i was talking with leroi
and it was obvious they were going to wwys and ants. but the warehouse intro
caught me off guard. WWYS seemed a little cooler than mtv, letterman, hob,
because they jammed a little bit more. During ants, carter was playing so
hard he broke his stick near the end. there weren't that many dave fans to
my amazement. many people didn't know who he was. everyone at snl loved
him, and were asking for his autograph, and hugging them, etc. all in all it
was great to see the boyz again. because of ants single coming out soon,
they had to pley it to start to build its popuralarity, accroding to leroi.

Anyone know where to get a portable 12v?

TREMOR@UTKVX.UTCC.UTK.EDU Sun Apr 16 23:10:34 1995

Can someone help me out getting a portable/wireless 12 Volt power source?
I have about 5 five hours tomorrow morning to look for one. If I can find
one, I am going to use a four track mixing board on the front row of the
balcony to record Dave in Nashville. I have the board, the mics, the
cords, but no power supply. Thanks for the one who helps me. Later, Jeff
p.s. I hate to even bring this up, but ME and my friend called Boyd's wife
today. My friend Steve hadn't phoned them in awhile (Steve and Boyd are
good friends) and we all three chatted for some time. Anyways, just for
fun, we asked if Dave was aware of the AIDS rumors. She said he knew it
was floating around but it is untrue. As for the rest of the conversation,
it was just chit-chat about touring and Boyd's other projects. She was
really nice on the phone, whereas Carter's fiancee was a bitch in
Greenville after the show. Later guys.....

SNL

eato0022@maroon.tc.umn.edu Sun Apr 16 23:53:21 1995

I think that it was a kind gesture of DMB to play that Warehouse
opening. It obviously didn't help the song out tremendouly, so they must
have played for none other than US. Everybody else in America wouldn't
realize that they started one song and played another. They obviously
did it for the hard core DMB fans like us. Just to play a little joke on
us. Nobody who doesn't own DMB CDs understand what they did, only us.

SNL(uggh) and observation

sundtde@iac.net Mon Apr 17 00:11:53 1995

I think that last point that was made about the Warehouse intro was
completly true, one for the fans...then again they could have done the 2001
intro or sweet home alamba intro and got a lot of people excited and those
people who only own UTTAD thinking, what the ????? Anyway Dave seemed
pretty into during Ants, dancing away, doing his little shuffle step...Boyd
of course was on!!!! When did he break all those bow strings...perhaps a
little Dancing Nancies during a comercial break to get the crowd
going?????(proably not)
Anyway I was wondering if somebody could answer a question regarding Boyd
in particular...Back in the days w/ Peter it seemed that Boyd used a lot
more effects on the sound of his violin, has anybody else noticed this...on
recent shows(1994 -) it doesn't seem like he's using anything more that a
little reverb....
Oh and one last question, does anyone know when DMB made it's first
midwestern tour or more speciffically came to Chicago for the first
time...just wondering....

Why does Dave have to play WWYS so much publicly? When I used to watch
him every Wed. night at the FloodZone in Richmond, for three bucks I never
heard him play the song once. Im surprised they would choose that song
for their first single/video over songs like Typical Situation or Jimi
Thing. Does the record company truly have that much control over the
band, who chose to put out their first CD's under their own record label
so they could avoid that type of control. It seems like theyre selling
out to RCA. When was the last time someone heard them play Spotlight or
hear Boyd as lead vocalist on that song "Find some inspiration, its down
deep inside of you..."

Lots of Stuff

MMALONEY@ACC.ROANOKE.EDU Mon Apr 17 02:08:57 1995

Just got back from Easter at home in Baltimore. I thought Dave was great on
SNL. No, he and the band didn't look tired at all. If you would have saw him
on HOB, you would have seen tired.

Oh yeah, they play WWYS in public so much because that is their single. When
every other band in the world has a single out, they play the shit out of that
single. I think that we should give the boys a break. We (minarets)
are the minority of
people who like the DMB. Some of us on the net remember seeing him in a room of
50 people for 2 bucks. The point that I am trying to make is that we have to
put this into context. If you weren't from Seattle when Pearl Jam first came
out with 10, you'd want to hear Alive and Even Flow every second (and most
people did). Imagine how annoyed the people in Seattle were.

We have been blessed with the opportunity to experience the boys in intimate
settings, to hear tunes that no one else in the world has heard, and to (this
kind of sucks) criticize the band a little too much.

I realized after the RSO show that the days of Floodzone and TRAX were over.
They've taken off and we should be a little more supportive and a little less
critical. Its all about the music. PERIOD.

Greenville/SNL

MOOREC@engr.engr.scarolina.edu Mon Apr 17 02:57:05 1995

I'm gonna make this really short because I've got lots to do but I
wanted to this before so much time went by that it was irrelevant.
The Greenville show was very good, but Charleston has still got it
beat. The show was a little shorter, I figure this is because they
had to leave for NY that night. I can't complain though, as far as
I'm concerned they could have just played Granny and gone home and I
would have been satisfied. I can't list all the good things about the
the first time I have heard it and I thought they would finish
Recently after it but they went straight into the next song. 2) Lie
in Our Graves, the whole end of the song was missing ( I think it was
a mistake because the lights came on and Dave just looked at Roi and
laughed). 3) Blue Water, I thought it was back, well not in S.C., at
both shows I got fooled when they played Typical Situation right
after Minarets ( somebody said something about Boyd not having many
effects lately, maybe this accounts for the lack of the song). 4)
Nature, I hope this is not a new trend for the band, playing the
first 20 seconds of a song they know we want to hear and then playing
something generic. 5) Tripping Billies, they cut this one short
leaving out the most worthwile part of the song, Boyd's solo. This
ended up being much longer than I planned so I am gonna do you the
favor of not critiquing the SNL performance for the 30th time.****************************************************

we ever get Spotlight again?" and Carter started laughing and said, "Ohhh
no, man, we stay the hell away from that song. Man, its been two or two
and a half years since we did that one." Why is this?
Later....Jeff

The wilmington show absolutely RULED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good sun, GREAT fun, all due to great friends and a tiny red wristband...
The setlist???I'll let someone else provide it, but it was a PERFECT day
in the neighborhood for an outdoor show.
The intro band...Boxing Gandhis...was pretty good, too. Anyone else
think so??
Well, this devout catholic (ahem) had better get some zzzzz's.
goodnight...Carrie

Is this because this was Peter's song as well...I agree with you Jeff, one
hell of a tune. I know that People People died after Peter's exit from the
band but these are two great DMB tunes that I sure are sorley missed by
many...I know the DMB w/ Peter debate vs. DMB w/o Peter debate has reared
it's head many a time on Minarets but perhaps a new discussion topic
might(or perhaps it's old) who might be a good and somewhat permant
keyboard addittion to DMB...so what do you all think, if you could pick a
new keyboardist for DMB who whould it be????
