Richmond Symphony

sdeck@cw.com Mon May 1 14:52:59 1995

Every day or so someone asks for the Richmond Symphony show....

Didn't the Richmond Symphony have copyright problems with taping that
show so there are NO copies available? Does anyone have the show or has
anyone actually heard it? It sounds reasonable and painfully true.

Dr Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker were funnier than any comedy team on film.

.....and Gonzo every week trying to play that one note at the end of the
opening credits and disaster striking each time.

dave as an actor

sdeck@cw.com Mon May 1 15:01:43 1995

Has Dave's acting career ever been discussed? When he was still working
at Millers and the band was just playing in Charlottesville every other
week or so, Dave used to act in plays at an experimental-type theater.
Did anybody out there ever see him onstage without a guitar and a band?

For some reason, I always thought the Muppet chickens were funny too.

Oh, If you have cable, The Muppet Show is on A&E in the late morning or
early afternoon. It is as funny and as good as you remember (unlike The
Wild Wild West--- I used to think James West was a god and Artimus
Gordon was brilliant---I saw it recently and it was painful!)

what gives?

the moose seems to be laid out on one too many smoking limitations as
litigated by the meuzzin one himself

back to a pack a day, for those of you that are keeping track of the
great smoke-out fiasco of early 1995

Anyone wanna go in on a case of DMB stickers? I want to sell them at
concerts this summer, but I need a couple of investors to split a count
of like 5000, or so. I figure Bama rags will hook us up, so long as we
buy in quantity.

just an idea.

anyone got a schedule of upcoming From Good Homes performances? Like
usual, I gelled on the recent appearance at thye balloon, here in
town...just wondering if anyone knows their story...or if there's a group
equiovalent where I can go ask thius kind of info and not get morally
flailed.

thanks guys...you're all pretty damn cool in my book!

oh happy day! I just found out that Leftover Salmon is carried by our
resident Rare CD store!

can anyone tell me is Monsoon featuring Sheila is indeed Sahannon
Worrle's lkatest project? I was under the impression that it was just
called Monsoon, but that didn't show up in the computer.

One last non-DMB question, Where do I pick up Ed McKain band tunes?
Keith, you got any boots? or any info on how I can get ahold of some CDs
or something?

thanks again

anyone remember Kermit's song on the bike from the muppet movie? For the
life of me, I cannot seem to remember. damn..it'll bug me all day!

*** Minarets Is Closed for the Summer ***

jcrother@moose.uvm.edu Mon May 1 18:10:16 1995

I'm sorry to inform the Minarets community but, do to circumstances beyond
my control, Minarets will _temporarily_ be shut down for the summer.

Tell Waldo Alex sent you.

As of this Friday, May 5, Minarets will be purged of all its susbcribers
and temporarily closed.

I am unsure at this point when Minarets will resume.
As majority of subscribers to Minarets are students with accounts through
their school system and will, in all likely hood, be away for the summer,
I'd suggest trying back when you return for the fall semester. Mianrets
shouldbe up and running again by this point. For all others, keep your
eyes on related nets for the re-opening announcment of Minarets.

I should also mention that during this shut-down time, Minarets will
most likely be switched from the UVM listproc system over to Brown's
Netspace mail server.

Sorry for the inconvience.

Re: Dave and Death

st942739@PIP.CC.BRANDEIS.EDU Mon May 1 18:23:23 1995

I don't think that it is necessarily bad either. All of the poetry that I
write is very sad and depressing, but I'm not. It's good that he uses his
feelings to write his lyrics, it makes them more powerful. If he does
this, than so be it. Do any of the others members of the band write
lyrics/poetry/stories?

Goosebumps, etc.

Halloween definitely gives me the goosebumps. I have a version from Trax
7/6/93 that has this cool sound during the "don't walk away" lines. Very
cool.
Rhyme and Reason also gives me the chills.
cool song
kinda strange, though with those needle references
hmmm
the halloween version also has a killer solo by Carter before it starts.
unbelievable
carter is cool

anyone know if the band is continuing to tour after europe?
if so where?

 Minaretters,

Yeah, I see that... but I also see that the whole emphasis of the music
is no where near being unhappy... for example look at the song "Lie in
Our Graves" if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's pretty sad, but if
you listen to everything, the music & the lyrics, it gives off such a
happy feeling that you can't even seem to express. My personal feeling
is that he is very sad and unhappy, but instead of mourning like almost
everybody does... he expresses his love.

2/24/95 DMB Tree Postponed

cdeluci@hubcap.clemson.edu Mon May 1 21:17:13 1995

Well, the subject line says it all...due to several factors, the tree is
1) Minarets is closing down for the summer
2) Problems with the seed (which are now all good, but it's a bit late)
3) Most people losing net.access**
I have been told by many that this tree will be nearly impossible to
administrate, because most people will not have net.access this summer
(which I included on the signup, BTW)
The biggest nail in the coffin came when I got my job for the summer...I
am an aspiring actor, and I got a job acting in a small theatre in Ohio.
Unfortunately, I have just found out that I will not have access to the
internet there (I thought I could telnet to my site since I'll be living
in a college dorm, but this is not the case).
So, as a result, this tree has been postponed until the fall. Signups
will open around Sept. 1. To the five branch leaders, I will still get
you your tapes way before then so that when the tree starts up again, we
can roll right away.
I apologize to all for this...as much as I wanted to do this, other
things just got in the way.
Take care--
Craig

Colorado Show (and saying bye bye)

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Mon May 1 21:27:01 1995

I don't remember the entire set list - but just look at any one from the
last two weeks, I'm sure it's almost identical. Drive In Drive Out was an
almost new song (i.e. it is being re-vamped) It does have a really cool
bridge - but still kinda' sounds like a work in progress. They did
Water/Wine - Lie In Our Graves and then cut out the end (you know, that
almost orgasmic moment when Dave belts out "I can't believe...") The crowd
was roaring after LeRoi's solo - like they thought it was the end of the
song - so the band quit there. (Gave me a case of blue-balls...)

Crowd was very well behaved, even the G.A. section, respnsive, no surfers.
Actually BHT put on a very energetic show - I think it was a case of
getting excited about coming home (they played their first gig ever in Ft.
Collins years back)

I was looking forward to the summer on minarets - when the traffic dies
down, but it looks as if we will have to do without for a while. It's been
real, hope to catch up with some of you later on down the road - get in
touch if you plan on heading to the mountains for the Aug. DMB show.

Take care all,
jason

Yeah, I see that... but I also see that the whole emphasis of the music
is no where near being unhappy... for example look at the song "Lie in
Our Graves" if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's pretty sad, but if
you listen to everything, the music & the lyrics, it gives off such a
happy feeling that you can't even seem to express. My personal feeling
is that he is very sad and unhappy, but instead of mourning like almost
everybody does... he expresses his love.
I dunno, maybe I'm just rambling again!

       -Adam

death doesn't always have to be sad. it may be hard to lose a loved
one, but we must all admit that everyone will have to move on to
what awaits them. some may not be as inclined to face that as others,
but it's true, and if fortune is up for you, you won't have to face
it for quite some time.

at any rate, lie in our graves is not a sad song. it's actually prolly
one of his happiest. yes, it is about lieing in the grave, as in being
dead. but it's about looking back on your life from that grave and
being satisfied with what you've accomplished.

i can't believe that we would lie in our graves, wondering if we
had spent our living days well
i can't believe that we would lie in our graves, dreaming of things
that we might have been.

down, and so do i. and so do alot of people i know who really draw
alot from this song. it's definitely one of his best tunes so far.
and i'd definitely say it's one of his most optimistic.

would you not like to be ok? i'd sure as hell like to. i'd also like
to be sitting on top of the world with my legs hanging free, looking
down upon all the thing i've accomplished in this reality, and being
happy.

and then i'll dance away. with my happiness and the lifetime i've just
finished. it's prolly one of his most spiritual, in that sense.

and it fills me up through my toes, to my ankles, to my head and then
i'm blown away....

I think there is an error in my tapes. I have a show marked 10/8/94 at the
Avalon in Boston, and a show marked 11/8/94 at the Avalon in Boston. Is it
possible that DMB played the same venue exactly one month apart? Probably
not. The person who sent me the 11/8/94 swears that he is right b/c he has
the ticket stub.
Can someone please help me?
Thanks.
RICH

i can remember when dave was playing the same venue exactly one week
apart.

Ok, here's a question for you guys - oldbies or anyone who knpws amd
[rpbably has all of dave's shows.......... Does anyone know when DMB
played up at St. Lawrence University (NY) at a frat house? I was talking
to my cousin who goes there around October and he mentioned that Dave and
the boys came up and played for them a while back. Does anybody konw the
date of this little jam? Also it would be really cool if SOMEONE
actually had this tape! i.e. trade!?!

Very interested in this little tidbit on Dave - (Even though I haven't
actaully thought about it till now) - later

I don't know. I could be wrong, but i interpreted it totally differently.

'when i step into the light'-light could be seen as life, but i saw it more
as death, a great light is a common theme in near-death experiences
'walking by the water'-allright, this is going to be a stretch, so open
your minds...the water is kinda like the River Styx. He steps in and then
fully bathes himself, finally releasing his soul to death.
'lie in our graves'refrain- hmmm. says that life is to enjoyed, no matter
what the circumstance (best of what's around) and that we shouldn't try to
think about 'what might have been'

I think it is kind of a sad song, but if it is the happiest song, it's not
exactly Mr. Happy.

paper-time now.

No DMB content...plenty of Muppets

JXG1435@ritvax.isc.rit.edu Mon May 1 23:31:51 1995

Well, I usually get annoyed at NO DMB on the list, but today y'all just cracked
me up. In the word of the great Johnny Carson "Funny stuff".

OK, first you have all totally underestemated the Great Gonzo. There were
only like 2 posts about Gonzo (what is that thing anyway?). Disgraceful.

And oh my, Fraggle Rock was like the best show ever. Thank goodness I have a
brother thats 10 years younger than me to turn me on to such Classic TV. That
Trash Heep was killer funny. My whole family used to gather around the TV to
watch that show. Hysterical.

the Romper Room lady would look through the Magic Mirror? Guess koliver was
outta luck there. We *do* remember Romper Room, right?

that held the whole show together! I mean without Fozzy the two old toads in
the balcony would never have exsisted!

One last final comment. Is it me or was Yoda a cheap Grover rip off?

Fine, i can't get into this no DMB thing to.

Yoda is not a cheap Grover. Grover was cool, but Yoda was better.
Except of course when grover was Super Grover, then he might have been cooler.
How about cartoons?
Anyone ever watch, Battletech?
even better...Voltron...I just saw a home rental movie of an old episode a
coule of weeks ago.
Those lions were just too cool. I wanted those toys.
The transoformers were great, this new series is terrible.

hmmm, i know there's more, but my memory is temoprarily shot.

A fond farewell trade

srubin@haverford.edu Tue May 2 00:08:31 1995

Well hey!
I want to thank everyone for making my second semester of email exciting.
Minarets is cool!! I met a lot of new people, got a bunch of live DMB, and
had a good time in general. Summer will not be as fun.

Before we all go our separate ways, I would like to set up some trades for
the summer. I have a bunch of different stuff including DMB, GSW, and some
Allmans. If you have some cool DMB, WSP, FJB, Dead, or Allmans, send me
your list and I'll send you mine.

I am also making an offer for people who will be living in the South this
summer. I will copy tapes for you, for blanks and postage, if you tell me
what it means to you to be southern. Tell me what you like about your
particular southern state. Tell me your favorite Civil War fact or
anything else southern. I like Dogwoods and Magnolias . . . aaahhh. I
will send my list to the first 2 undigestified people and the first 2
digestified people (just send me the digest #).

Y'all have a good summer. For those of you in the DC area, keep an eye out
for Rockwell Church shows. I heard there might be one with TR3 and Shannon
Worrell.

Bye, for now,
Seth

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question. The help is greatly

from the Bayou as well, but from Dec 9, 1992.

My other question is yet to be answered. It was regarding what the hell DMB is
doing between their gigs in Germany at the begining of June (although a friend
of mine said they are on the bill at the Pink Pop Fest in A-Dam on June 5 -- the
day before I get there) and June 20th?? Are they planning on more Euro dates or
is it vacation time for them?? If it's vacation time, then I have extra space in
the back of my VW Golf rental over there g. Which band member should I invite
to be a travel-buddy g??

hey all,
first off I would like to say that the nu-nu offer is closed.
Thanks for all the responses. There will be a digestified offer shortly.

I would also like to thank the people who have run MINARETS or shall I say
allowed us to run minarets.
I have not been vocal on the net, but I have built a large collection fo
crisp bagby's and have met a lot of people who I have not seen in a while.
(What's up Sari). I am not unsubbing now, but am tearful for those who are.
Not a college student, but also not a "teeny-bopper" who first heard WWYS and
was then into the group (unlike others in my school), I have been listening
to DMB's music for almost two years now and have not grown tired of popping a
phat tape into the car. DMB is a group whose talent is not pure but that is
made up with the amt. of heart the group shows when they preform.
This will be a quiet summer (except touring w/ Phish) b/c I will not have 45
messages to scroll through a day. I will surely miss everyone who is unsubbing
.. Just feel free to drop a message in my box to say hi. ISchaefer@aol.com.
Anyways, when does MINARETS go off the air?
See ya'll later. Thanks. BUT DO NOT UNSUBSCRIBE ME PLEASE.
Later,

DMB Chapel Hill

cschwart@email.unc.edu Tue May 2 02:01:07 1995

What's up ya'll,
I just got a tape from Chapel Hill, He's Not Here, 1993.
Just wondering if anyone knew the exact date.
I'm also missing the set list, but I think I figured it out. I do have a
water called "Blue Water"? Was the old Rhyme & Reason called Rhyme & Rhythm?
Does the song that goes "I cant believe that would lie in our
graves...." called Lie in Our Graves"? And does he often go from dancing
nancies to blue water (?) to lie in our graves straight through w/o
pause, b/c he does on this tape and it's pretty sweet.

If anyone happens to have any other chapel hill shows (or the one at sae
at Dook last fall), please let me know.

Thanks,

Colby

voltron rocked!!! i had the metal lions that shot their heads off and all
came together to make a sweet voltron. that slide they shot down to get
into their lions was pretty sweet too, but it sucked when that one guy
died. wasn't his name stephan? while i'm on the subject of tv shows that
kept me goin through those tough elementary school days, fraggle rock was
like the vitae of the holy grail to me. sweet doozers and, the dog was so
cool too. most great of all though was the uncle who went out into the
'real' world and kept sending back postcards. i'm gonna miss this over
the summer, but anyone can feel free to write me and tell me how
worthless this drivel will be HA HA HA HA HAH HAH HAH HAH (maiacal
laugh). everyone have a great summer, and if you're in boston don't get

Re: DATE NEEDED

The tape that you thought was Zollman's is actually Kappa Sigma 3/6/93 at
Washington and Lee in Lex, VA. For those of you who haven't heard it,
Blue Water, The Maker, Two Step (the super Peter calypso 20 minute
jam!!), and Halloween?!? What more could you want. The coolest thing
though is when Dave says, "Can you say love?" before Granny and then
afterwards he's like,"That'll be our first single..you'll be down at the
beach listening to it singin' LO-OVE!!! Shit! That's a bad
tune...BAABY!!I love this song....Hey, look at the over there, they're
listenan' to it too....Lo-ove!! Hey, how ya doin'!"or something like
that...then Leroi's like, "Not!" heh heh Wow, what a great show that
was. Good memorees!

is coming your way. Our very own Mercy Me is going to be spending the
first couple months of this summer at one of the band members place in
Burlington! They are a phenomenal band with tons of potential. Look for
them at Nectar's and all that. You won't be disappointed. If anyone is
intersted in an extremely nice 1st generation sound board of there last

BMB in Boston--Avalon

sdeck@cw.com Tue May 2 13:14:53 1995

RICH,

I hate to disappoint your friend who swears he has the ticket stub, but
Dave only played in Boston, at Avalon, In October 1994.

Back in the summer, I was DYING to see the band (hadn't seen them for
quite some time) and just heard about them coming up this way last fall.
When I found out the date OCTOBER 8, 1994, I couldn't believe my bad
luck---I was going out of town to a wedding and couldn't attend.
Microfilm copies of the Boston Globe confirm this. OCTOBER not November.

They didn't swing back through Boston until February, 1995, when they
played at the Orpheum Theater.

If your friend insists about his ticket stub, get him to photocopy it for
you. It isn't really a big deal, but it would be nice to have the dates
and venues correct.

josh levin sayeth...

I think it is kind of a sad song, but if it is the happiest song, it's not
exactly Mr. Happy.

that's a pretty cool interpretation, but it isn't dave's. he's told
many an audience that it's a song about being happy about being dead
and being happy about your life.

that doesn't mean your interpretation is wrong. i know most musicians
love to see different takes on their songs, dave in particular. i've
been told specifically that he refuses to make changes to the lyrics
file, even though he's seen it, because he likes the artistic and
creative slant that his fans give the music. if anything, i have a
feeling he'd really like to see this interpretation of lie in our
graves.

One last grovel...

Hey now,

Since everybody else is jonesin for that one show that they haven't
been able to acquire, I thought I'd join the pack (following those
visceral lemming-esque instincts) and make one final plea before
Minarets gets shut down for the summer (although I'll have net access):

If anyone out there has a copy of the show from 3-7-95 Fort Wayne, IN
(Embassy Theatre), please get in touch with me so we can set up
a trade...I was at this show and it was nuts and it would be
a travesty for me not to have a tape of it. I have 300+ hours of
live Dead, plus about 20-some hours of Dave to trade, and I'm pretty
quick once finals are done.

So, if you are looking to be nice to somebody special on the net
(namely me), please drop me a line and we'll set something up.

RFK, Deer Creek, and Soldier (I hope), take it easy y'all...

....except for you, Thompson.

muppets/sesame st/Jim Henson

rkochman@ucg.com Tue May 2 18:55:03 1995

In light of all of the Muppets/Sesame St/Fraggle Rock conversation - I just
wanted to throw out a thought for everyone to ponder.

Do you realize that Jim Henson has affected the lives of *everyone* who has
been born in this country since 1968!!!!! EVERYONE! Can you find anyone
under the age of 27 who did not watch Sesame Street? or the Muppets?

Through television, one man has directly touched the lives of an entire
generation......when you walk around campus, or pile yourself in a bar to
celebrate finals - take a second to look around you and realize that
everyone you are looking at has been affected by Jim Henson. Incredible

broken heart for every fallen star
book, take myself for a walk, and go to bed.
