Re: beegees idea is shitty and uncool

csantill@abacus.bates.edu Wed May 3 22:22:27 1995

I think we should leave em alone...

Robyn ... good idea .. I subscribed myself, but I though about it and decided
that everyone is entitled to their own music tastes and should not be messed
with .. if we took over their net, we'd ruin it for them and be messing thing up
.. I'm unsubbed now ... if anyone needs to find out how to unsubscribe, let me
know, I'll forward the info to you ...

peace and light,

fellow friends,
felt for that amount of time that they had found some more friends, but it was
just us talkinf muppets, cheese, and doozers and things. Just imagine what
these people would feel like at the end of the summer when a mass exodus from

oh oh...grant is mad...we've screwed with the wrong person...i guess
we should unsubscribe....or just pick a new net everyday to invade....

--------------------------( Forwarded letter 1 follows )---------------------

Hi Everyone...

This is a post directed toward our new "subscribers"

This afternoon I must say that I was quite amazed how we gained almost
twenty new "subscribers" in a span of only three hours. Gee, word of
mouth about our list must have travelled pretty fast in order for that to
happen! Or perhaps it is just coincidental? Anyway, this would all be
wonderful IF our newfound members were actually here in support of the
list. However, being a person who is not quite so naive nor stupid, I
see that the intentions of this new group are a little different.

I don't know where you all have come from or why you chose to crash our
particular site, nor do I really care. I am considered a good-natured
person who has a strong sense of humour and enjoys a good joke. I am
not, however, amused in the least by your actions.

This list is for the discussion of the Brothers Gibb, in case none of you
caught wind of that when you found the list name. I have worked very
hard to create and develop this list for the sake of the Bee Gees and
their fans; and I sure as hell am not ready to let a group of ignorant
net-surfers destroy it.

Therefore, I would suggest that you unsubscribe yourselves from this list
before I have the chance to personally kick each and every one of you
out. I will also make certain that none of you will have the opportunity
to subscribe to any other mailing list in CyberSpace and cause the same
problems. Yes, this is a threat. Believe me, you have picked the wrong
person to screw around with.

I hope your co-operation is forthcoming. I have 80 subscribers to take
care of, and do not have time for any of this.

Thank you for your time. God knows you have wasted enough of ours.

My apologies to all who are on this list for the reason it was started.

the song that dan likes

drcraver@mailbox.syr.edu Wed May 3 23:29:04 1995

Well folks, I must say the greatest thing about this band is that their
music hasn't gone stale with me. I first started listening about a year
ago and every week I declare to myself a different favorite DMB song. I
get really into most bands for maybe a few months at most then sorta put
them on a back shelf but not these guys.

If you play guitar, take the time to learn the Song That Jane Likes.
It's a fun one.

Everyone follow Rich's advice and take over the Barry Manillow net this
summer. They won't even know what hit'em %)

Looking forward to Red Rox.
peace all, have a musical summer.

well, duh.

THOMPSRC@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu May 4 01:26:02 1995

Unfortunately Rick, many people get to the end of their lives with deep
regrets about how they have lived.

did i say in my post in anyway that contradicts this statement?
no. i wasn't trying to say that _everybody_ is happy when they're
dead. just that dave would like to be, and that lie in our graves
is an optimistic song that expresses his hope that he will be.

You say you "can't imagine people like that"--spend about 5 minutes in a
nursing home and you will.

i know alot of people who aren't in nursing homes who would be really
scared to face death right now.
i never, _never_ said that _nobody_ is unhappy in their final moments.
i never even implied it. i said that everyboyd would _like_ to
be happy, and that is what dave's song is saying. also note that
i didn't say that your interpretation is wrong, i said it's different.
if you can find a tape of davetalk that backs up your interpretation,
than so be it, but i really doubt you will. but i guess you don't
really give a fuck what i have to say since i'm so "self-serving,"
so i'll just shut up now. you seem to be well read, since you're
telling me to go read literary references to death, so the least you
could do is read, and pay attention, to what i have to say, and
realize that it is not an affront to you before establishing one
against me.

PLEASE don't reply with some of your self-serving claptrap.

sorry. i couldn't help myself.

I'd have to say that I agree with Robyn, I would be pretty pissed if someone took
over my net, but if they really are "jivin", and don't mind, then it might be ok. I
guess that the best thing to do would be to ask those who are on the Beegees net

just because davenet is going down for an unknown amount of time is no reason

I certainly don't want the last days of the first incarnation of minarets to

Re: New Subscribers

bmking@mail.wm.edu Thu May 4 04:48:38 1995

hello, friends. I wrote a letter to the administrator of the bee gee's
mailing list, after what was posted here. I did not identify minarets or
daveband, but just said what happened was not representative of the whole
group and that the music was about peace.

although I think he's taking it a bit too seriously, there's no reason it
should've happened at all.

spread the love, people....

Hi Brett,

Thank you very much for your concern. I expressed my anger to most of
the subscribers that joined this afternoon and was actually quite brash
with all of them. I took the liberty of personally removing each one of
them from the list and banning them from further subscription.

I am quite upset that they chose ours simply because of the subject
content. A lot of people in America ridicule the Bee Gees becuase of
their seventies activity, which I feel is rather unfair, and I received
several posts from each of them stating this fact. We are very loyal to
the Bee Gees, and actually the Bee Gees do keep tabs on our discussions,
which makes this all the more tragic. Thank heavens nothing was said
that could have done too much damage. My reputation and position in the
Bee Gees' "circle" could have been seriously affected.

I realize this is not your fault, but I felt that I should tell you the
seriousness of the issue. I too hope that it won't happen again,
however, I'm afraid I am going to have to make changes to the list to
prevent it. As of today our list will become a private, moderated
system, and thanks to all involved this afternoon, the general public
will not be able to access the list without my personal approval - one
that will limit our international reaches and waste valuable time.

Thanks for the ear and again your concern, and pass this along to your
fellow list members if you would.

Sincerely,

soultions for the summer

HAYMW@ns.rhodes.edu Thu May 4 04:55:57 1995

Well I was thinking that h there has been a lot of great dialogue here this
year, and it does not have to stop, we do not need to take over another
net, but join the alt. music one that I know nothing about. To me if the
people were the same, or atlest some of the people , then that would be good.
I do not see why we a can not do this, make the other DMB net good.
I hope tat that someone will give us a solution to this, and mabey info
about how to join the other net.

have a great summer for theose who are leaving.

hello from the warrior

jfogelso@emerald.tufts.edu Thu May 4 06:12:00 1995

Hey guys- this was in the lost digest, but I wanted to resend it. Have a
killer summer and maybe I'll bump into some of you on the road!

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hey everyone, wow, digests are sooooo massive now...
I just wanted to say hello to everyone out there. I'm glad that all of
the minaret founders are back and posting like crazy- it's a better place

I am not an "oldie" or whatever you call it. I am I guess what you call
a "middle-bie"- I have loved the band's music since the summer of 92, but
float around from friendly person to friendly person.

I have not, much to my shame, been living up to my name lately...I can't
afford a Boston to Texas flight, or whatever. I can't wait to hear DI,DO
sometime though. I haven't heard the new stuff either...

I must say that I personally am very sad that Sandy left the net. I
think I will miss his offensive posts, because often times, they seemed
more humorous than offensive.
(and I totally agree with him about Fred House- I miss you Fred, write to
me if not to the entire net, for I have long-ago lost your address.

We had Spring fling here at tufts- BB King rocked from what I heard-
unfortunately I had to pass out for about an hour of it. Buffalo Tom is
cool.

GUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUSGUS
GUS!! They are amazing- everyone go out and buy their CD if it is near
you. If not, here is some stuuf you might like to know- mailing list
number is (617)323-1047. or write 98 Sherwood Stret, Suite 3B,
Roslindale,MA 02131. This stuff may have changed, but it's what's
written on the CD from May of last year. I love them- they graduate this
year, but they will be staying together AND TOURING, so watch for them...
also, they are on the next AWARE CD and they will have an album out with
new stuff possibly this winter. ****IF ANYONE WANTS ME TO TAPE THEIR
DEMO TAPE OR THEIR CD, let me know, I'd be happy to do it. They are very
talented and are good guys as well****
BTW, last night they opened for the Samples....anyone remember when a

A question to anyone who knows : Is it legal to trade the RSO show? I
have seen requests, but I don't know if anyone has responded?

Can someone send me the horde lineup?

I hate rumors, but I have to ask this- has anyone heard about a show with
DMB and Hootie and the Blowfish at UMASS on mother's day?

Also, it is quite possible that I may have missed these, but has anybody
posted tour dates for the summer.

For anyone who cares, I will be schmoozing with the politicians on the

know and maybe we can listen to DMB and party!!:)
Also, Richmond will be graced with my existence for a few short weeks.

Want another minarets?

dig@cynosure.com Thu May 4 06:19:44 1995

Hey guys, if you really want me to, I could set up a mailing list here
on my site for minarets. The software isn't quite the same; there'd be
no digestified version available, but it would be a mailing list. And
when the real minarets.net comes back, everyone can switch back and I'll
shut mine down.

I won't do it unless you want me to, but I wanted to offer it since the
folks on minarets have been real nice to me, and since DMB is really
great. :) Let me know and I'll set it up.

BeeGees

messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Thu May 4 07:06:32 1995

I for one think this is a good idea. But we are not taking over the net,
we are simply exerting our influence. No one accused me of trying to
take over Minarts when I showed up. Phish.net and other outlets had
grown lame and tiresome, I needed somewhere to strech my mind. It was a
very good thing that I love Dave and his music, now I have an even deeper
and fonder appreciation of it. We can't expect to turn BeeGees into our
own, but rather become part of it. Won't you join me and wsee where this
one goes? The other night I showed my roomate how to use his e-mail, he was
really drunk and wrote his first flame, acctually he just plain harrased
someone. I was so proud :-) Hell, I really dig disco anyways. MUCHO
THANKs to Tom!!! I listend to the Cornell show last night at my
neighbors birthday drinkfest and that has to be the worlds longest and
greatest Dancin ever. Anyone got a nice copy of the NEW Drive In Drive
out that has been played as of late? Peace and disco down

Bee-Gees...Sorry

rkochman@ucg.com Thu May 4 13:04:32 1995

OKay......I feel like shit! Yesterday I tried to organize a takeover of the
BeeGees net because minarets was shutting down. Well......it was a lot more
fun to talk about and to think about then it actually was do. I began to
feel bad for the people who were there to actually talk about the Bee Gees
(scary!!!!). I felt like this was their house.....they leave the door open
for anyone who wishes to enter.....and I treated it as - hey look! a house
to throw a party! who cares who lives there....

I'm sorry if I sound like a wimp backing out, but I'm more sorry for trying
to spread the idea in the first place.....therefore, I am unsubing from that
list and although I can't *tell* anyone else what to do, I would ask that
others do the same. Maybe in the next 36 hours, we can all come to an
agreement where we can all meet - the AWARE.net? the HORDE.net?....sorry, I
checked, there is no Sesame Street discussion group nor is there a muppets
group; HOWEVER, there is a muppets news group which is great! I'll find the
name of it and post it later.

Although I am truly sorry about the BeeGees migration attempt -IT WAS FUNNY
AS SHIT FOR A FEW HOURS - my god, they call their net JIVE TALKING and they
are having conversations about Robun Gibb and his lesbian dominatrix
wife.....hmmmm maybe I'll go back there for real this time ;).....

Anyway, thanks for listening y'all

my 1st and only grovel

hey, i was at the 4-10-95 orlando show-- my first BIG dmb show- and would
love a copy of it! i thought I had one secured, but have sorta...lost
touch with the guy i was hoping to get it from. So, if you have a copy,
please please, please let me know... I have internet access all summer....

Also, if you have 'net access this summer and want to set up some trades
at some point, i just got a new job and can actually AFFORD blanks!
However, I have a little tiny collection... but hey, if you want to GIVE
me tapes this summer, i wouldn't mind either... *grin*

Oh, one last thing... i think having a Minarets channel on IRC would be
REALLY cool, but I need a server name if someone does it. I can suggest
one, if you have open server access... try #minarets on
sanjose.ca.us.undernet.org (If you don't know how to change servers,
when you are in IRC, type /server sanjhose.ca.us.undernet.org) I'll try
to go set one up, but I hafta go to work in an hour....

Anyway, good luck on exams, congrats on finishing the year. I look
forward to seeing you all again.... I think I'll miss having to wade
through 200 messages a day.....

okay, I can't get to IRC until 5pm...some little HS'ers were hanging out
on IRC instead of doing their work, and the school system (major sponsers
of my 'net connection) complained to the admins.. so I only have IRC from
5pm to 7am.... Anyway, i get home from work about 5:15 or 5:30, so if
you are all interested inb trying this out, in irc, switch to the server
sanjose.ca.us.undernet.org (type /server sanjose.ca.us.undernet.org)
and join channel #minarets (type /join #minarets) once you are on the
sanjose server.... i think it could be cool...

Oh, this would be 5:30 Eastern Standard Time

IF you have any ?'s email me personally and I will do my best to answer
them... I'll check my mail b4 i go over to irc tonight...

Hopin' to see you there... Aricha

So far I've gotten all positive responses regarding setting up a
mailling list to temporarily replace minarets while it's gone.

I'd like to get a message from jcrother giving me permission to do this.
He runs the list now; and I don't want to do this unless it's okay with
him. I'd also like to get permission from someone to include the FAQ in
the message sent to new subscribers.

Otherwise, I'm ready to set it up.

the reality of this net., but he is the reason for it...we all did
well... in communicating with strangers and keeping this a very
peaceful place...occasional flames...but no forrest fires of
contempt ever did take over the whole net...we had no true rules or
any guide lines...we just talked and showed we were alive...was
anything acomplished??...think about it...it was a great coming

Re: #minarets on IRC

bmking@mail.wm.edu Thu May 4 20:18:55 1995

you are all interested inb trying this out, in irc, switch to the server
sanjose.ca.us.undernet.org (type /server sanjose.ca.us.undernet.org)
and join channel #minarets (type /join #minarets) once you are on the
sanjose server.... i think it could be cool...

undernet is a second irc kind of thing. it is much smaller and is not the
default 'net' that irc uses. if people want to set up a minarets channel on
irc, I would recommend using the main net (EFnet I believe.. but it doesn't
really matter) to do it, since that's where most of the irc types hang out.
almost all clients default to the normal irc servers, such as
irc.virginia.edu, irc.colorado.edu, cs-pub.bu.edu, etc..

this would eliminate the step of switching servers and put the channel on the
main irc thingy..

Another farewell

AHENNE@drew.edu Thu May 4 23:50:52 1995

well...
newsgroups and listservs, and this one has been by far the best.
everything that cha said in his post is true--this may be, in some sense,
the "dave matthews net," but we have risen above the literal sense of that
to a more complete vision. well done, everybody, and have a great summer
filled with life and love and all that. and remember, this isn't the end,
it's just a couple of months apart, a couple of months to change a little
and come back to the net renewed. i'll look forward to meeting you all
again then...

Made the job worth coming in.

Anyhow, if y'all plan to meet in irc or if you develop a tide-us-over

So best of stuff to everyone. Take care and all of that nonsense.
Here's my quotation to leave with ya.

"You get your intuition back when you make space for it, when you stop the
chattering of the rational mind. The rational mind doesn't nourish you.
You assume that it gives you the truth, because the rational mind is the
golden calf that this culture worhsips, but this is not true.
Rationality squeezes out much that is rich and juicy and fascinating...so

Re: I am willing to set up a mini minarets for the summer!

EJ_Tiedeken@ACAD.FANDM.EDU Fri May 5 01:01:39 1995

Hi all,
as a mini minarets headquarters. What I will do is have people send me
posts and then I will send them out to the people that sign up. I hope that
I can pull this off. If not I will try to let people know asap. All I am
asking is that people send me there name and e-mail address witha subject
heading of "Runaway's mini minarets." All I am trying to do is my part in
continuing the sunshine spirit of the DMB community throught the sunny days
of summer. Hope everyone with accesss to the Home Page will check out the
"Warehouse" that I compiled with the help of Chris Buford and Ben Tanen. If
all fails, see ya in the fall.

Dave Matthews

HAYMW@ns.rhodes.edu Fri May 5 01:54:45 1995

Not quite 2 years ago, I started listening to the Dave Matthews Band. I can remember the
first songs I heard were Dancing Nancies and Ants Marching. "Eat Drink and Be Merry,"
god, what great killer lyrics. The beat was amazing. My roomate, from Atlanta, had
gotten their first disc over the summer, and I could always hear that sone blaring down
the stairs from his room with the stereo on full blast. After hearing that song a few
times, I borrowed the disc and listened to it all. Since then I've been hooked. I
started listening to his one bootleg, and then a 2 months later, I got a killer copy of a
show from Athens.
around a little shitty van (before they got their tour bus last easter). There were
about fourty people there. Not and energetic crowd, but everyone was enthralled by the
music.
yet), and have really enjoyed hangiong out with them. It' amazing to see how they have
changed. it seems like only yesterday we could walk right up to the stage, or talk with
them after the show. Now they are on MTV, making $50,000 a show, and only playing for 90
mins.
up with Jeff, and taped all the fall '93 shows while taking a semester off), but also the
newer ones are pretty good, but most of all, I like hearing them live.
was playing at the bar in my cheezy little shithole of a hotel. Then, when I got to the
airport, to top it all off, there were a bunch of rednecks groovin down at 5 in the am to
their music.
but am happy for the band, and glad that they are forever on tour it seems.
hope everyone has a great summer, and can hear 'um play a couple of time, I know I will.

Listen to the words.
Hear what they mean
"Eat Drink and Be Merry"
"Make the best of what's around"
and ocf course use a "Jimi thing" to keep you "going"

later, Michael

Everyone left-
enriching my life for the last 7 months or so...I've learned a lot about a
great band and a great bunch of people - you. Thanks to ALL those who
helped me get my collection underway way back when - esp. Kim for
providing me w/ my first one after some bleeding heart begs. I've met
some great people here and the general vibe has always (at least tried to)
been friendly. I hope you all have a fantastic summer and maybe I'll see
you at some shows...Peace, Love, and happiness(and the proverbial spoons)-

P.S. For those I'm in the middle of trades w/ - I haven't died - but
exams have got me. You'll hear from me soon. Everyone else - feel free
to drop me a line anytime....until later-

Denny's 2.99 Super Slam Breakfast

molly@ctg1.com Fri May 5 13:43:13 1995

(they're racist, but it's the concept I'm aiming for)

I may have missed the deadline, but I need to thank minarets for the
entertainment. I haven't been here forever or even a very long time but I
have been priveliged to know people like dash (who gave me my first tape)
and keith and clareemily and i really was starting to like it here, I was.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~hidden newbie offer~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I ain't got much (four shows in my hands, some more on the way) but what
I've got you can have--it's all pretty HQ and some rad shows.  this includes
whatever I am going to get from keith (all I know is, it'll have #36 on it.
.. .and that's all I WANT to know).  Just email me back with any famous San
Francisco (or New York baseball only please) Giants in the subject line.  Or
send me email poetry.  Whatever.  This is open until I freak out. Just share
the wealth with someone else someday. Cause it got shared with me and I love
this band.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Keep enjoying life. It was 70 degrees in Boston yesterday and it is just
about the time of year when you ditch work for the first time in the summer.
I never have been in the minarets clubhouse but those people sure know about
eskimo pies. Walk down the aisle of the produce section barefoot it will
make you happy on a hot day.
If you want to, write. Randomness is good. in cheesiness and suburban
blandness are some of the wierdest and neatest things. As the Frugal
Gourmet said this morning at 3:30 a.m., "I bid you peace."
